Quality Time with Mom and Grandpa

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are only in their early 50s (Jim Bob turned 51 in July, and Michelle turned 50 in September), but they have 19 children and six (soon to be seven) grandchildren.

Their lives are busy. The couple has said that they get less sleep now than they did when they had a bunch of little ones because they often stay up into the wee hours of the morning having deep conversations with their older kiddos. But no matter how sleep deprived they are, Jim Bob and Michelle are always up for spending quality time with their kids and grandkids. Here are a few new snapshots:

Duggar Baby Statistics

 The Duggar family in 1994

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar have been married for 32 years. After tying the knot in July 1984, when Michelle was 17 and Jim Bob was 19, the couple waited nearly four years before having their first child.

Between March 1988 and December 2009, a span of almost 22 years, Michelle Duggar gave birth 17 times and was pregnant for more than 12 years. During that period, there were only five calendar years in which the Duggars did not welcome a child.

Aside from the 22-month gap between Josh and twins Jana and John, as well as between Johannah and Jennifer, all the Duggar kids are between 12 and 19 months apart. The average age gap is 16 months.

Duggars in Branson

The Duggar clan celebrated Thanksgiving with a trip to Branson, Missouri. They were joined by Grandma Duggar and Jim Bob's extended family (Cousin Amy Duggar King, Amy's husband Dillon, and Jim Bob's sister Deanna), as well as some of Michelle's extended family.

They stayed in a cabin and enjoyed good conversation, as well as visits to Silver Dollar City and the Dixie Stampede. Here are a few snapshots:

Duggar Divorce? Duggars Say No

November has been a joyful month for the Duggar family, as they have celebrated Jinger Duggar's wedding, Jessa and Ben Seewald's two-year anniversary, Spurgeon Seewald's first birthday, and the announcement of Joy-Anna Duggar's courtship. But the former 19 Kids and Counting stars have also been hit by a relentless rumor that Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are filing for divorce, with multiple tabloids claiming to have insider information.

In case there is still some question about the merit of the rumor, we want to assure you that Jim Bob and Michelle are very much in love and have no intention of breaking their marriage vows. Tabloids are also claiming that Josh and Anna Duggar are planning to split, which is another untrue rumor.

Jinger and Jeremy's Unity Song

Were you able to watch last week's wedding episode? If not, it's available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon. If you tuned in, you heard the beautiful rendition of "Come Thou Fount" that was playing over the church speakers as Jinger Duggar and Jeremy Vuolo lit their unity candle. (They ran into a small roadblock when the two smaller candles turned out to be stuck to the display, so they grabbed a nearby lighter.)

Who performed the song, you ask? It's an old hymn written by Robert Robinson, a 22-year-old man who lost his father as a young child and lived a dark teenage life, in 1757. (The lyrics have changed over the years, but you can find the original words on my blog, NashvilleWife.com.)

The rendition played at Jinger and Jeremy's wedding was arranged by Page CXVI, Jeremy's favorite band. They performed it live.

In case you want to listen to the song again, we have embedded the official music video below. Visit PageCXVI.com to purchase the band's albums. ("Come Thou Fount is found on the "Hymns" CD.)

Dillard Wedding

We're back from our blogging break! Our posts over the past week and a half have been spotty, due to our limited access to the internet. Thanks for sticking with us. :)

While we were away, Derick Dillard's brother, Dan Dillard, married the love of his life, Deena. The two were engaged in July, and the wedding took place on November 12th. Derick was the best man, Jill was a bridesmaid, and Israel was the ring bearer.

Photo: Vuolos in Australia

Following their beautiful Northwest Arkansas wedding last weekend, Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo are enjoying a wonderful honeymoon Down Under. Their plan is to visit Australia and New Zealand, but thankfully they were not yet in New Zealand when the earthquake struck. (Were any of you impacted by the natural disaster?)

A reader named Antoinette happened to run into the Vuolos in Sydney and sent us a photo to share (above). Here's what she says about the encounter:

We were at the Sydney Opera House watching a Sydney Symphony Orchestra performance, when we spotted Jeremy and Jinger in the front row. We had a lovely chat with them, they were so sweet and friendly and we got a photo inside the concert hall! They said that they were having an amazing week in Sydney and looked so relaxed and happy together.

In case you missed the video that the Vuolos made when they arrived in Sydney, take a peek below:

Recap: 'Jinger's Wedding'

Counting On "Jinger's Wedding"
  • The night before the wedding, Jinger sleeps at Jill and Derick's house (the Duggar "guesthouse," located next door). The next morning, Jeremy comes over to read the Bible and pray with Jinger.
  • "It seems very surreal that we're at this moment in time when Jinger is going to get married and we're giving our daughter away," says Michelle. "And I just want today to be a time of joyfulness and happiness, and yes there's going to be some stressful, crazy moments to try to pull all this together, but at the end of the day, I want it to be about relationships and making sweet memories."
  • Michelle's childhood friend Cindy is one of the wedding planners. "She's so dear, and her mom is so dear," says Cindy. "It's just a special day." Jer, Jed, and Jason help her wrap boutonnieres.
  • All the girls head to the church to do their hair and makeup. Meanwhile, the guys meet in a different room to make final wardrobe preparations.
  • Josie is the flower girl. Before the wedding, she receives a visit from Amy, the nurse who cared for her in the NICU.
  • Jeremy says that having his dad officiate his wedding has been a dream of his since childhood. "It's just a great joy, one of the greatest joys that my wife and I have experienced," says Pastor Chuck Vuolo. "It's been a joy to see [his] friends come together to support him."
  • After Michelle and the sisters help Jinger into her stunning wedding dress with a 13-foot train, Jim Bob arrives to give his daughter a hug. "Jinger!" exclaims the father of 19. "You're so beautiful. You've got to be one of the most beautiful brides ever. Wow. You're breathtaking."
  • Jinger presents her father with a handkerchief with a sentimental message printed on it: "To my dad: You are the first man I ever loved. When you give me away today, know that I will always be your little girl. Your loving daughter, Jinger."
  • Jim Bob tears up. "This is something we have prayed about your whole life, and today God has answered our prayer," he says, all choked up. He and Michelle take a few moments to pray with Jinger.
  • Jim Bob says he expected weddings to get easier but that they are in fact becoming more difficult.
  • The next item on the agenda is bridal party pictures (separately so the bride and groom don't see each other until Jinger walks down the aisle). Jinger and Jeremy each have 10 friends/siblings standing up with them.
  • The guests arrive and are seated in the sanctuary, and the ceremony beings. Jinger's "middle" brothers usher family members down the aisle, and then Michelle and Diana (Jeremy's mom) light the candles.
  • The guys walk out onto the stage, and each groomsman meets the bridesmaid he is paired up with as she arrives at the front of the church. Michael Duggar the ring bearer throws paper soccer balls, while Josie the flower girl throws flower petals.
  • Jinger takes her father's arm, and the two walk down the aisle to meet Jeremy, whose eyes water the minute he sees his bride. Once Jim Bob sits down, the congregation joins in singing "How Deep the Father's Love For Us."
  • Pastor Chuck Vuolo begins the sermon. He instructs Jeremy to love Jinger all the days of her life, even when she seems unlovable. And he encourages Jinger to give her husband wise counsel, saying that if he had a dollar for every wise word his wife has given him, he would be a wealthy man. Pastor Vuolo says that he knows Jinger will be a godly wife because of the example she has had in her own mother.
  • The couple recites their vows, repeating after Jeremy's father:
    • "I Jeremy take you Jinger to be my wife. I promise to be faithful, in suffering and in joy, in poverty and in wealth, in sickness and in health. I promise to love you and cherish you till death brings our separation."
    • "I Jinger take you Jeremy, to be my husband. I promise to be faithful, in suffering and in joy, in poverty and in wealth, in sickness and in health, till death brings our separation."
  • Jinger and Jeremy exchange rings and recite the following: "I give you this ring, as a perpetual reminder of my faithfulness."
  • A beautiful version of "Come Thou Fount" is played as the couple lights the unity candle. The two smaller candles are stuck to the display, so they just grab a lighter.
  • Everyone cheers as Jinger and Jeremy share their first kiss. "The first kiss was amazing, right on!" says Jinger.
  • The couple spends a few minutes alone before returning to the sanctuary to take family pictures.

Michelle's Response to Heartbreak

Elise from Los Angeles submitted a second Duggar moment that has impacted her. Here it is:

Another favorite Duggar moment was the devastating moment when Jim Bob and Michelle were at Jubilee's ultrasound and they found out she had passed away. Michelle's response, through tears and utter heartbreak, was, "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord." In that moment, we saw Michelle's heart. We saw the heart of this family. I will never forget that moment. She could've chosen so many other responses, but she chose to praise Him.

What's significant to take into account about her response, is this woman didn't just lose her baby, but she knew she would now be mocked and ridiculed relentlessly in front of the world for her choice to even have that baby. She had trusted God, and in His sovereignty, He was allowing her to walk through something so painful and confusing. She could've been bitter, angry, humiliated. But she chose grace and praise.

Jim Bob Duggar, King of Rap

Our blogging break is almost over! You're going to love this post...

Almost two years ago, Jim Bob Duggar, Michelle Duggar, and Jinger Duggar took a trip up to Columbus, Ohio, during a massive snowstorm to speak at Grace Polaris Church. During that speaking engagement, Jim Bob made his rapping debut alongside Christian comedian Anita Renfroe.

Susan, a loyal reader, shares her experience at the event. We have also included two YouTube videos created by other attendees. (You might want to sit on the floor for this performance. There's a good chance you'll be laughing so hard that you might just fall out of your chair!)

My favorite memory of the Duggars, while there are so many caught on camera, is when I got to hear them speak in person. It was in February 2015, and my husband had bought tickets as a dating anniversary/Valentine's Day present.

I was so excited to finally meet the wonderful couple I had been following all these years. However, there was a major snow storm, so we prayed to God for it to clear up and diligently trudged further until we felt we needed to turn around. Not but a couple miles later there was a snow plow. Hallelujah! We were able to follow him for a large part of the way to Columbus!

Once we arrived, checked in, and sat down to eat, we saw Jinger. She came around to everyone and graciously thanked us for traveling in this terrible weather. Her heart was so sweet and humble. We later found out, during the speaking engagement, that they had a tough time getting there too! Their flights were being delayed and canceled, and they were afraid of not being able to come. But through lots of running and God's grace, they found a flight that took them Columbus, Ohio.

That night, listening to Mr. and Mrs. Duggar give their testimony and share the Gospel was amazing and really touched my heart. After they were done speaking, a Christian comedian, Ms. Renfro spoke and pulled Jim Bob and Michelle up there to do her famous YouTube song, "In Tha Muthahood." They were great sports, and the song was hilarious!

Remembering Grandpa Duggar

The Duggar kids celebrate Grandma and Grandpa Duggar's 48th anniversary
2008

During our blogging break, we are sharing content from our loyal readers. Here's a message from Candy:

One of my favorite moments is the way the Duggar family handled themselves with such grace when Jim Bob's father passed away. I have lost my grandparents, and the ache was so bad, but just like the Duggars did then, my family and I held tight to our faith and trusted that our loved ones were in heaven and that we will see them again!

The strength they showed when Michelle lost Jubilee was another, and the grace sweet Anna has shown in the trials she has experienced. On a happier note, I have enjoyed the weddings, the births, and the Duggars sharing how they save money and do many things for their larger family.

Duggars in Scotland

Diane's favorite Duggar moment is the family's trip to Scotland...

I have always wanted to go [to Scotland] and saw it through their eyes. I loved the cameraman they used to have, an older gentleman that would play and teach the kids how to do the sound. Can't remember his name.

To watch a video of the Duggars in Scotland, check out our post from September 5, 2011. (Click here to view.)

The Couple that Laughs Together...

We are taking a short blogging break, so we asked our lovely readers to share their favorite Duggar moments from the past 12 years of reality TV. We will be posting these responses in the coming days. Enjoy!

The first response comes from Elise from Los Angeles:

One of my most favorite Duggar moments took place when the four youngest girls were still very young, (it's possible Josie hadn't been born yet). Jim Bob and Michelle were sitting on their couch. Michelle was spoon feeding one of the babies, and Jim Bob said something that caught Michelle off guard. She lost control and was laughing hysterically till there were tears in her eyes.

They both ended up in belly laughs and couldn't even feed the baby for a few moments. I love that moment because you get a peek into the youthful, sweetness of their marriage. With all these kids and all the responsibility on their shoulders, they still can laugh together like that. To me, it's a beautiful testimony of how God wants marriage to be.

Speaking of Jim Bob and Michelle's marriage, here's a video in which the couple explains how they met:

Recap: 'Courting Jinger'

Tonight on Counting On, "Courting Jinger," we watched Jinger's transformation from young teenager to soon-to-be-married woman...

  • The Duggars all agree that Jinger is bubbly, expressive, and dramatic. “It’s really cute to watch her personality when she goes into a situation that is a little stretching for her,” says Michelle during an episode filmed seven years ago. Do you remember watching Jinger learn to drive a stick shift with Jim Bob and Amy? That’s a prime example of her bubbly personality.
  • A few years later, Jessa and Jinger volunteer at Mama Carmen’s Espresso Cafe to raise money
for Mama Carmen’s orphanage in Central America. They learn how to make a variety of beverages as they work behind the counter for the day. “Probably out of all of us in the family, Jinger likes coffee the most,” says Michelle. According to Jinger, coffee is largely responsible for her bubbly personality. She consumes a ton of caffeine as she mans the cash register.
  • Another memorable moment is when the siblings pull off a dinner theater for their parents. Jinger and Jessa are in charge of the food, and they have a blast prepping in the kitchen together. The steak is a little tough, but Jim Bob and Michelle are appreciative of all the work their kids do so they can enjoy an entertaining evening.
  • When Jessa and Ben get engaged in August 2014, they call on Jinger to take their engagement pictures. Just over one year later, the Seewalds ask her to snap Christmas pictures of newborn Spurgeon. A few months later, Jessa assists Jinger as she does a photo shoot for Mark and Sierra Dominguez and their five kids. (Sierra has helped plan weddings and other parties for the Duggars.)
  • In early 2016, Jinger and Jeremy become an "unofficial" couple, and they are engaged in July. The wedding took place on November 5th and will appear on next week's episode of Counting On!
