Duggars Speak about College

When people hear about Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar and their brood of nineteen kids, the question that often comes to mind is "How on Earth are they going to put nineteen children through college?" They have homeschooled from the beginning and just recently celebrated their fifth child, Jessa's, high school graduation, but where do they stand when it comes to higher education?

"My parents don't pressure us, like overly pressure us, to go out and move out of the house when we're eighteen and go to college somewhere in another state," explains Jill. "But I think, too, we love our family so much that we're like, 'we want to be able to gain our skills -- whether that's college or whatever -- from home or as close to our family as possible."

Jim Bob and Michelle encourage their children to follow God's plan for their lives, and if that means a higher education, then they are all for it. Their older kids have been taking classes to gain skills and experiment with different career options.
Josh started a business called Champion Motorcars a few years back and now owns not one, but two car lots in Springdale. He has mentioned the possibility of professional school in the future.
Jana is exploring careers in music and midwifery. You can read all about that by clicking here. Several of the Duggars, including Jill, became interested in medicine after Josie's being in the hospital. Read more on Jill's plans for the future here. As for John-David, he has his own towing business and is actively involved in the local fire department.

"Tale of Two Duggars" Highlights

On this week's episode of "19 Kids and Counting...."
  • Jana added more cork boards to the commercial kitchen. The Duggars have hundreds of pictures of families they have met or who have seen them on TV, and they enjoy displaying them in their home. Send a photo, and you could be on their wall!
  • It's a special day for Josie Brooklyn --her first day of school! Michelle turned on an educational film for infants and sat by Josie's side while she watched.
  • Two large families, the Pinkertons and the Carpenters, came to visit the Duggars.
  • Jim Bob was headed to Nashville to snag a good deal on a used bus for the family. Jessa was kind enough to suggest that he take Jill, since she was the only "big kid" who had not gone on a trip in a while.
  • According to his dad, "Jackson Duggar is kind of a lady's man." oooh la la!
  • Everything is running smoothly in Josh and Anna's home. Anna says "I am thankful that Josh goes to work and I can stay home and be a mom and the wife." Josh's feelings are just the opposite -- he gets stressed out just thinking about all that Anna has to do at home and is thankful that he is able to work at the car lot -- although he loves spending evenings and weekends with Mackynzie, as well as the surprise visits that she and Anna make to daddy's office.
  • Even though she has had nineteen little ones, Michelle is experiencing new challenges with Josie. "Typically I don't have babies that spit up," says the mom of 19, explaining just one of the many differences between Josie and her siblings.
What did you think of this week's episode? Do your infants/toddlers watch educational films?

The Hills Are Alive!

"The hills are alive with the sound of music!" Does that ring a bell? Did you know that "The Sound of Music" is on the Duggars' list of best films ever made? Just last year, Jim Bob and Michelle and the kids met Sophia, Melanie, Amanda, and Justin Von Trapp, the great-grandchildren of Captain and Maria Von Trapp, at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival.  The Von Trapp Children (aka JAMS) spread the joy of music around the world.

Have you seen the Sound of Music? Did you enjoy it?

Duggars and the Media

Q: What types of media do you allow your kids to watch?

A: Michelle Duggar: "Whatever is good, whatever is true, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is noble. We try to pick things that are going to encourage good character."

"Television and video games and computer, I mean, they can all be great resources, but too much of anything is bad. We have been around different things, but just limited; everything is limited," explains Jessa. The Duggars do use the internet, but it's all protected. As for TV, they don't have cable, but they watch movies and shows on DVD. Two months ago, the Duggars voiced characters for "The Life at the Pond," one of their favorite shows. Click here to find out how you can purchase that episode ("19,000 Frogs and Counting.") Jim Bob and Michelle work hard to expose their kids to positive media and to limit negative influences.
"You are not going to put garbage in your mouth, so don't put it in your mind" says Michelle.

What is your view on today's media?

"Duggars Say Cheese" Highlights

Boy has this week been busy, but we finally found time to type up the "Duggars Say Cheese" recap......

This week on "19 Kids and Counting:"
  • After consuming 50 ounces of hair products, the Duggars drove to the on-site shop building for their annual photo shoot.
  • Scott Enlow, the Duggar's ever-patient photographer, spent the day reminding the kids to smile and sit up straight. "Family group shots are hard for us because the little kids don't always want to smile, and someone's pickin' their nose, or whatever," says Jessa. Less than 30 minutes before sundown,  the photo shoot was finished (thank goodness!), and the Duggars were able to go home.
  • Josie showed off her adorable "#19" onesie, sent to the Duggars by ones of their faithful fans.
  • Jordyn, who is always trying to "pet" her little sister, spent some quality time with mommy and Josie.
  • Josie went in for another checkup and had two shots. She is only a bit taller than her brother Josh was at birth, but by age two, there should be no difference between her and any other two-year-old.
Have you ever done a family photo shoot?

Update on Josie Duggar

Just yesterday, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar spoke at the Values Voter Summit in Washington DC. They are so thankful for the millions of prayers that have been said for Josie Brooklyn Duggar (or as Jennifer calls her, Dosie Bo-hin Duddor) and were thrilled to announce that Josie is thriving!
"She's a miracle," announced Michelle. "She weights twelve pounds, eight ounces." Michelle left Josie yesterday morning with a family friend, flew out to DC to speak, and returned to Arkansas early this morning.

Josie was born 9 months ago, weighing 1 pound, 6 ounces. How old were your kid(s) when they weighed 12 pounds, 8 ounces?

Night Owls Duggars

Have you ever seen the Duggars between 5:00AM and 8:00AM? If you have, you know that they are not morning people. So what's the opposite of a morning person? I'll give you a hint: Hoooot, Hooooot.
"We aren't morning people," explains Jessa. "We just haven't grown up that way; our parents are both night owls."
"We get our energy at about 9:00 at night -- we're ready to go!" says Michelle. "We have like another 4 or 5 hours under our belt. But the mornings then, of course, are a little bit later. For us, 7:00 is early."

Are you a morning person, a nigh owl, or somewhere in between?

On the Road Again

The Duggars are loading up their bus and heading to Washington DC to attend the 5th annual Values Voter Summit. Jim Bob and Michelle and the kids will be the first to receive the Pro-Family Entertainment award.
"FRC Action will be honoring the Duggars' positive influence on American television during a special segment of the Values Voter Summit," announced Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Counsil Action.

This year's summit will last from Friday to Sunday and will feature speakers like Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann, and (of course) the Duggars. The family will occupy 6 of the 836 rooms at the Omni Shoreham hotel.

Would you want to attend the Values Voter Summit this weekend?

Michelle: "Someone's expecting"

On this episode of 19 Kids and Counting, "Duggars Go Dinner"...
  • The Duggars had two other families over for a super-sized dinner party. Three families, nine adults, 34 kids. Wow! The other two families are the Bontragers (a family band) and the Swansons (Dwain and Lana and their five children).
  • When Jim Bob and Michelle said they had an announcement, everyone turned to look. When they said "someone's expecting," 43 jaws dropped. Michelle then assured her shocked family and friends that it wasn't them. Guess who? Jon Boyle, a member of the Duggars' film crew, and his wife are expecting their first child.
  • Josie is enjoying interacting with her 18 siblings. She is being weaned off oxygen, and Michelle is learning to let go and allow her older daughters to take their turns with Josie, a moment the girls have been waiting eagerly for. "It took me a little while to feel comfortable enough with letting someone else care fore her and feed her," says Michelle. "I wanted that responsibility on my shoulders; I didn't want my girls to have to bare that."
  • Michelle teaches her babies sign language, and Anna is helping Macknyzie learn to read with Monki See Monki Doo.

"Testy Duggars" Highlights

  • When Jana and John-David Duggar returned from their life-changing mission trip to Southeast Asia, the rest of the family greeted them with Silly String.
  • Jennifer, the chatterbox who just turned 3, is potty training! The cutest moment of the show? When she recited her baby sister's full name, Dosie Bo-hin Duddor (aka Josie Brooklyn Duggar). Adorable!
  • The older Duggar girls took a First Response class with John-David. Jana and Jill might be interested in joining the volunteer fire department.
  • 17-year-old Jessa celebrated her high school graduation with a party and a framed diploma.
  • Michelle took Josie to Little Rock for her "well baby" checkup. Josie was pronounced healthy and is being weaned off of oxygen.
What did you think of tonight's show? Josie sure is gettin' big! It's hard to believe that her chubby legs were once tiny enough to sport Jim Bob's wedding ring!

Duggars and Allowance

Do the Duggar kids get allowance?
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar don't give their kids allowance, but they do reward them for helping out around the house. Besides receiving oodles of praise from mom and dad, the Duggar kids earn $.03 per chore. The little ones do about 15 chores each day (making their beds, putting away their PJs, taking out the trash, etc), so that’s almost 50 cents! Not bad for a little tike.
“Now, our older children are looking for the bonuses,” laughs Michelle. “They go above and beyond, and we'll reward that. If they offer to clean the van or mop the garage, we'll give them a few dollars or something to show them the value of hard work and acknowledge their initiative.”

Do your kids get allowance? Did, or do, your parents give you allowance?

Duggars in a Radio Show

Two months ago, the Duggars voiced characters for "The Life at the Pond," a radio show that encourages good character. Every episode has a moral, and the Duggar kids would be modeling how they treat and interact with their siblings. "I wanted to make sure I made this as close to Duggar reality as possible," said the show's creator, Charlie Richards. He was worried that it would take hours of practice for the kids to master their lines, but to his surprise, most of the kids got them right on the first try. It was evident that God was in control.
Charlie Richards and his family were invited to the Duggars' house several times. "I never heard a fight break out," he observed."I never heard one kid yelling at another....The Duggars have it right."

Click here to read more and to hear the Duggars recording their lines. You can also purchase the "Life at the Pond" episode, "19,000 Frogs and Counting. Tony Meets the Duggars."
