'A Quarantine Courtship' Recap

Counting On "A Quarantine Courtship"

  • The Duggars are recording their own show because the crew is unable to be come into their homes to film.
  • “There’s a lot of fear out there of the unknown,” says John as the show opens. Jessa says that the Arkansas Duggars are experiencing a taste of what life is like for Jinger and Jeremy, who have to rely on video chat to communicate with family.
  • John bakes a cake for Abbie’s 28th birthday, which is a challenge because Abbie doesn’t eat sugar or gluten. She cut both out a few years ago because she was having stomach discomfort. The chocolate cake that John makes looks and tastes delicious.
  • Meanwhile, the other Duggars decorate their vehicles for a birthday parade. Jim Bob and Michelle drive the three-wheel sports car that one of the boys recently traded for. They show up at John and Abbie’s house with horns blazing and set their gifts on the ground. “It was definitely a birthday that I’ll always remember,” says Abbie.
  • On another day, Jana and the younger girls sew masks for the family. Jana says she learned how to sew from her mom and aunt. The younger girls are learning from her and have also attended a class in the past. They drop the masks off at everyone’s houses.
  • In Los Angeles, Jinger is organizing the house. She packs up Felicity’s old clothes to send back to Arkansas for Ivy and the other girl cousins.
  • Ivy is starting to walk, so Jim Bob and Michelle and some of the kids come by to watch her through the window. Jessa says that the boys have had some tearful, angry moments because they don’t understand why they can’t spend time with the family. “I wanted them to drink some water,” cries Henry when the family leaves without coming inside.
  • Later, the Duggars get together over video chat to catch up on each other’s lives. The Vuolos announce that Jinger is 13 weeks pregnant. They have everyone cast their gender vote by completing a task, such as finding a pink or blue clothing item or food item. Before the Vuolos vote, the score is tied 14 to 14.
  • Jinger and Jeremy have a soccer ball that is either filled with pink or blue powder. Jeremy kicks the ball, and it explodes with pink powder. “We are absolutely elated that we are having another girl,” says Jeremy.
  • At the end of the video chat, Justin joins from Texas and announces his courtship with Claire Spivey. “This is Claire, and we are now in an official relationship,” says Justin. He and Claire met at a family conference in spring 2019 and started a relationship several months after.
  • “We love each one of you guys, and Mom and I pray for you guys on a regular basis,” says Jim Bob as the video chat ends.

'Jana's Secret Garden' Recap

Counting On "Jana's Secret Garden"

  • Jessa has Anna, Abbie, Kendra, and Lauren over to eat and chat about raising daughters. Kendra brings a recipe for lactation cookies, and Anna brings the ingredients to make homemade baby soap.
  • Kendra shares that she was only able to nurse Garrett for a few months before having to supplement formula. He had lip and tongue tie, which affected her supply. “You just kind of feel bad because you’re like, ‘I’m not able to do this for my child, even though this is what I wanted and I know this is what’s best,’” says Kendra. “You just kind of have all of this…guilt, and there’s nothing wrong with it. As long as they’re being fed and they’re healthy, you’re doing your job.”
  • Later, John flies Abbie, Jana, and Grace to Knoxville for a short trip. Jana and John take a woodworking class. “Over the years, Jana has done a lot of home renovation projects,” says John. Jana makes a classy sign that says “Home, Springdale, AR” with the Arkansas state outline.
  • Jana is starting an online business called Arbor Acres and is hoping to sell home items. “It’s still in the beginning stages,” she says.
  • “She probably is the first girl, daughter that’s really ventured out to do a business like that,” says Michelle.
  • “Matter of fact, she’s probably done more than most of us guys here by starting this pretty big endeavor she’s taking on,” says John.
  • Also in Knoxville, Abbie goes with Jana to get her hair done. The stylist asks Jana about her love life. “Sometimes it gets a little old,” says Jana in an interview, of being asked if she’s in a relationship. “I feel like we do this whole groupings of the marrieds and the singles, and we forget that, oh wait, we’re all sisters, we’re all brothers and sisters. And so keeping that focus, it makes it more enjoyable and it’s not this whole awkward, oh, I’m not one of y’all. It’s like, no, we’re family.”
  • Abbie can relate to Jana because she was the oldest single child left at home before marrying John.
  • People often ask Jana if she is just really picky. “I used to be a little more strict,” she says. She has always thought that she wanted a guy who would stay in Arkansas, but she now realizes that that is not a necessity. “…If I really love the guy, I’ll follow him to the ends of the earth. I’ll want to go wherever he is. And so far, I just haven’t found that one.”
  • “…If the right one had come along, I would have been married, ya, a long time ago,” says Jana. “I just don’t think that it’s been God’s timing yet, and I have been able to accomplish a lot of other things that maybe I wouldn’t have had I been married.”
  • Back at home, Jim Bob and the boys put together a glass greenhouse as a surprise for Jana. Their contractor friend lends a hand. “Several of the boys have actually kind of surpassed me in my knowledge of building skills,” says Jim Bob. Installing the glass is the hardest part, and the work crew wonders if they will finish it in time.
  • They complete the job at the last minute. Jim Bob is in communication with John, as the rest of the family scrambles to set up food and balloons. John and Abbie lead Jana into the backyard, where she sees the greenhouse. Everyone jumps out from behind a big tree. The family agrees that Jana is not usually an emotional person, but this surprise brings her to tears.
  • “Jana deserves so much more than just a greenhouse,” says John. “She’s somebody who is a giver, giver. [She] gives of her time, of her assets, of just all of herself to everybody all the time.”
  • “I’m just blown away by their love,” says Jana.

'From Snow to Sand' Recap

Counting On "From Snow to Sand"

  • James and Seung Hye, friends of the Vuolos who knew Jeremy before he met Jinger, arrive in Los Angeles for a visit. “I fee like I know them quite well,” says Jinger, who has spent time with them on multiple occasions.
  • Just a couple hours away from the Vuolos’ house, in Big Bear Lake, is a snowy mountain. They head out there with James and Seung Hye to go snow tubing. A friend comes along to watch Felicity. Jinger suggests that they brave the alpine slide, as well.
  • The next day, they enjoy Venice Beach. When they pull out kites, Jinger expects Felicity to be enthralled, but she doesn’t seem to care. “I flew kites growing up all the time,” says Jinger.
  • “Felicity loves the sand between her toes,” says Jeremy. “You can tell she’s going to be a beach girl.” She also very much dislikes having dirt (or sand) on her hands. According to Michelle, Jinger was like that as a child, as well. Jeremy and James plunge into the Pacific Ocean.
  • In Arkansas, the guys throw John a “dad-chelor” party at Jeremiah and Jedidiah’s house. Gracie arrived early, but they are still going ahead with the party. Spurgeon is excited to join in on the fun.
  • They fill diapers with water and try to make baskets, a game that quickly becomes very competitive. Justin is the champion. For the meal, they eat steak, with no sides. “That’s guys for you,” says Johannah.
  • After eating, they share words of encouragement with John. “He definitely kept an eye on us boys and kept us in line,” says Josiah.
  • “John’s been a good example of just a go-getter,” says Jason. “I know that he’s a good man, a good man to look up to.”
  • “He’s been a great role model for me to look up to and say, ‘That’s somebody I want to be like,’” says Austin. “He’s wise beyond his years.”
  • “It’s always great to have fun, but it’s also important for us guys to affirm one another, encourage one another,” says Ben.
  • Abbie says that the hardest thing about being a mom to a newborn has been having to stay at home. John says his biggest challenge has been diaper changes.
  • Later, Joy and Austin gather their families and prepare to announce the gender of their baby, which they found out by doing a blood test. “Because you grieve the loss of that baby, another baby doesn’t replace that baby, but it does give you an expected hope for another child,” says Michelle.
  • As everyone stands in the yard, John flies a helicopter overhead and releases pink confetti into the air.
