"A Duggar Loss" Recap

On tonight's episode of 19 Kids and Counting, "A Duggar Loss"...
  • The Duggars travel to New York City to announce Michelle's pregnancy on the Today Show. (Click here to watch the segment.) In the green room, the kids enjoy the smorgasbord of goodies provided by NBC while watching the first half of the broadcast.
  • During the early stages of her pregnancy, Michelle takes extra care to watch her diet, take vitamins, and exercise daily.
  • Michelle and best friend Cindy visit Arkansas Children's Hospital with Jana and Josie. The doctors and nurses who sustained Josie's life when she was born at a mere 22 ounces are thrilled to see the healthy toddler walking, talking, and blowing kisses.
  • Back home, the Duggars gather in the living room to discuss baby names. If it is a boy, how about naming the child after his father? "I think there's only room for one Jim Bob in this family," says Michelle. "In this world," adds Jim Bob, smirking. But they add the name to their list nonetheless.
  • "This is going to end in disaster," says Jedidiah, as the kids throw out names faster than Mom and Dad can record them on paper.

  • The following day, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar head to the doctor's office for a special appointment. Soundman Bill Stefanacci will be the secret-keeper until he announces the baby's gender to the entire family.
  • The ultrasound technician searches for the baby's heartbeat. "I could tell by the look on her face that something wasn't right," Michelle tells TLC, devastated by the news that their baby had passed. "Your whole world turns upside down," shares Jim Bob.
  • The doctor measures the baby at 16 weeks, 1 day; but Jill recalls recording the heartbeat at 17 weeks, 4 days.
  • After the reality of the loss of their twenty-first child sinks in, Jim Bob and Michelle release their emotions in a heartfelt prayer.
  • Once home, the couple fights to keep their composure as they gather the troops and share the devastating news. "We have nineteen here and two with the Lord," Michelle explains.
  • Jim Bob makes his way around the living room, hugging and comforting each of his children.
  • In the three days leading up to the stillbirth of Jubilee Shalom Duggar, Michelle pours her heart out to God and to her baby. (Hear her letter to Jubilee below.)
  • "She looked like a little Duggar, just in a tiny form," says the grieving mommy. "We are so grateful for the time that [God] gave us with her."
  • Jim Bob and Michelle invite their family and friends to celebrate Jubilee's short but meaningful life. They also invite the pastor who counseled them as teenagers and officiated their wedding twenty-eight years ago to speak.
  • After the memorial service, the family gathers at a local cemetery to bury Jubilee. "We needed the closure, to be able to say goodbye," explains Michelle.
  • Michelle chooses the butterfly to symbolize her daughter's life.

    "Boys Day Out" Recap

This week on 19 Kids and Counting, "Boys Day Out"...
    • Jim Bob and his nine youngest sons (all but Josh), load up and drive to Fort Rock Family Camp for a father-son camp out.
    • Joy attempts to bake cookies for the guys. Unaware that the convection oven has to be turned down 100 degrees, she burns the first batch. But Duggars don't give up that easily.
    • "Whenever I make a mistake, I like to go back and just do it all over again," says Joy. Her second batch is a success!
    • After enjoying dinner and fellowship at Fort Rock, the boys head to their cabin. The following day, they are immersed in an intense game of laser tag.
    • When the camera crew jokingly accuses Jim Bob of pushing Josiah out from behind a hay bale, causing him to be shot, Jim Bob replies, laughingly, "I didn't know you caught that on tape...sorry Josiah."
    • But Jim Bob gets his in the end. Justin, who is on the opposing team, "kills" him twice. The little ones, especially Justin, turn out to be some of the best players.
    • On the way home, Jim Bob stops at a florist shop--not the typical way to end a father-son camp out. To express their gratefulness for the girls, each of the boys picks out a flower for one of his sisters.

    "Swerve & Serve" Recap

On tonight's episode of 19 Kids and Counting, "Swerve & Serve"...
    • Running on Duggar Time, the family barely makes it to Little Rock in time for Friendly Chapel's annual fish fry. "It's like herding cats to get everyone out of here," Jim Bob tells the camera crew, as he shepherds each Duggar out the door.
    • While Josie was living at Arkansas Children's Hospital back in 2010, the Duggars attended services at Friendly Chapel. "This is our home away from home, and we love our church family here," says Michelle.
    • The Duggars are always up for a little fun, even while serving at a fish fry. "Jim Bob and I had a contest," explains Michelle. "We were trying to see who got the most trash in their bag." Although she spends much of her time chatting, the mom of many ends up collecting more garbage than her hubby.
    • Later, the Duggars head to a family arcade to celebrate Joy-Anna's 14th birthday and Johannah's 6th birthday. The entire family has a blast.
    • According to Jim Bob, there are many similarities between Johannah and Jana, who was an especially playful and energetic child.
    • Michelle has enjoyed watching Joy blossom: "Joy is pretty outgoing and will say what she thinks. She is becoming this beautiful young lady."
    • Arkansas teens can get behind the wheel at age fourteen. After receiving her learner's permit, Joy-Anna practices driving through obstacles and parallel parking with Michelle and Jill. At one point, Jill risks her life by holding up a stop sign. Thankfully, Joy comes to a complete stop.
    • Jim Bob and Michelle have taught nine of their children to drive. "We trust them, or else we wouldn't let them behind the wheel,"explains Michelle.

    "Duggars in Space" Recap

On tonight's new episode of 19 Kids and Counting, "Duggars in Space"...

    • While Michelle and Jill stay behind in Israel to wait out Josie's cold, the rest of the family visits Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. They are given mock spacesuits to wear (the real ones cost $11 million each).
    • "There's not any way I'm ever going to be an astronaut," admits Josh. "I should have thought of that fifty pounds ago."
    • Watching her aunts and uncles experience the moonwalk simulator, Mackynzie is eager to give it a try. Moments after being strapped into the chair, she starts screaming. "She definitely was not into the whole out-of-this-world experience," says Josh.
    • Several of the Duggars brave the multi-axis simulator and, despite their history of motion sickness, do not lose their lunch. According to the Space Camp employee, the rider's center of gravity stays in place, making it nearly impossible to experience motion sickness (unless you hold your breath, which has happened once).
    • "Joy is...a young lady now," says Jim Bob."But occasionally she still likes to do tomboy things, like climb on the outside of a spaceship. And she had a great time." Both she and Josiah enjoy floating in midair.
    • During an interview with the crew, Jackson remarks: "Girls don't go up in space. Well, do they?" Johannah smiles and nods. "Oh," replies the slightly embarrassed Jackson.
    • When the Duggars return to Tontitown, Jedidiah pays a visit to Dr. Taylor to have a cyst removed from the inside of his lip. Jim Bob and Michelle have accompanied two other children, Johannah ("Duggars in Stitches") and Jason ("Duggar in Danger"), to have work done by the plastic surgeon.
