The Couple that Laughs Together...

We are taking a short blogging break, so we asked our lovely readers to share their favorite Duggar moments from the past 12 years of reality TV. We will be posting these responses in the coming days. Enjoy!

The first response comes from Elise from Los Angeles:

One of my most favorite Duggar moments took place when the four youngest girls were still very young, (it's possible Josie hadn't been born yet). Jim Bob and Michelle were sitting on their couch. Michelle was spoon feeding one of the babies, and Jim Bob said something that caught Michelle off guard. She lost control and was laughing hysterically till there were tears in her eyes.

They both ended up in belly laughs and couldn't even feed the baby for a few moments. I love that moment because you get a peek into the youthful, sweetness of their marriage. With all these kids and all the responsibility on their shoulders, they still can laugh together like that. To me, it's a beautiful testimony of how God wants marriage to be.

Speaking of Jim Bob and Michelle's marriage, here's a video in which the couple explains how they met:

  1. I liked the show most before they were stars.

  2. I appreciated when Jubilee died and Michelle kept repeating, "The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the name of the Lord," because I have done that, myself, in hard times.

  3. I didn't enjoy the show when the kids were younger. It seemed so scripted and controlling. I watched because I felt sorry for them.
As they've grown and been allowed to represent their own personality and interests it has been a great pleasure to watch.
I think one of my favorite episodes was when the elder siblings decided to build a play house. It was so special to see the appreciation from the younger kids and John David commenting how great they fulfilled the childhood wish for future generations.

  4. Aw, yes, it's great to see how evident their love for each other is. I remember when they went on a marriage retreat and had to do different exercises to demonstrate things they needed to work on. I was surprised to see they didn't have it all figured out after all these years :), but it's awesome to see how they've made their relationship such a priority.

  8. My favorite duggar moment was when the duggars went over to Josh and Anna's house for dinner and they had all the food miniature in order to give the family some hug news that was coming soon for them. The ways in which it was announced to the family by way of carving out a pumpkin and using that as the bases for the fruit salad they were having for dessert. Means that no matter what in good times and in bad. People families Can still come together for something great, beatiful and precious. Something that only GOD himself can knite together and make it hold true to form. It's the little blessings in life that turns out to be the biggest rewards life has to offer.

  9. I watched and listened to this video about how Jim Bob and Michelle met. It's not the first time they have recounted this. I find it a contradiction that Jim Bob never forgets to mention "how beautiful" Michelle looked to him. He still says it many times now. How is this in keeping with their beliefs about "outward appearance"? Don't they preach about the outward appearance NOT being important? It's what's inside that counts? They place an awfully high importance about their appearances, don't they?

    1. I see nothing wrong with JB still talking about how beautiful Michelle is to him. It's not just her physical appearance he is talking about but how the love of Jesus shines in her. I picked that up right away when I first met them. I know husbands in their 80s who talk about how beautiful their wives are. And the same with elderly wives. It's so sweet to see these couples. For me being of Conservative Anabaptist beliefs outward appearances are not important but I still find my husband just as handsome as he was when we were younger and we are in our 50s and 60s now.

    2. 5:34, I get your point, but remember, they also preach about a woman's "countenance" and that a woman's hair is her crowning glory, so yes, they are totally into looks.

  10. That is really sad, looking back like that and realizing that because THEY had a relationship like that, they expect THEIR KIDS to, too. Only give consideration to people with exactly the same religious beliefs; no kissing and keep your hands off (even though they admitted they broke that rule); you're headed down one life path if you're born female but another if you're born male. What are they trying to do? Relive their youth through their children? Don't they realize what they are doing to the kids? So sad. So controlling!

    1. I see it more as, they saw mistakes they made as a dating couple, and they want to help their kids see the wisdom of making better choices. I don't think they expect their kids to have the same kind of relationship they did, they want them to have more than that. After making some semi-serious dating mistakes myself, I totally get what they're doing.

    2. How was their dating a mistake? They've supposedly been happily married forever and JB was in love with her from first sight. How is that making mistakes that they have to shield their children from now? I don't get that logic.

    3. Just the mistake of being physically involved before marriage, to whatever extent that was. They've talked about that before.

  11. My favorite times that the Duggars have shared are the planings for weddings and the actual weddings. All the love they have for one another is so evident. The family's reactions are so bitter sweet - happy but knowing they will relate in new ways, especially in the case of Jinger and Jill moving away. I still remember Jennifer (I think) in tears on Jill's wedding day, and her daddy comforting her.

  12. Michelle remained a virgin on their wedding day. They made no "dating mistakes". They had a good time together, did fun, interesting things, spent some romantic time alone together and drove around in JB's car. How is that sinful or a "mistake"? Kissing and hugging each other before marriage is NOT a sin, the minister who married Jessa said so himself. This family CHOOSES to hold themselves to a "higher unnecessary standard" because they want to make themselves stand out. Pure pride.

    1. I'm not sure it's pride as much as personal standards, but it's sad to see the fun life Michelle had as a young girl contrasted with the more restricted lives her daughters live.

    2. Well said, 4:50. I agree.

    3. If a person is obeying God's Word they will stand out. It's so interesting and sad that those of us who obey the Bible are called prideful or legalistic. The Duggars aren't perfect. None of us are. And come Judgement Day, I'm sure the Lord will say,"Well done, thou faithful servant" to them which hopefully won't be for a very long time.
