And YOU?

To announce the gender of baby #2, Josh and Anna decided that Michelle would be the only one to find out the sex at the ultrasound. She kept it a secret for an entire week, while making arrangements for a pilot to write the gender symbol in the sky with smoke. When the big day arrived, the entire family gathered in the yard and eagerly watched the airplane.

We would love to hear what creative ways have you have used to announce the gender of your baby, or other exciting news, to family and friends! Go ahead and share your experiences and thoughts in the comments section.

Michelle on Noisy Toys

What kind of toys do the Duggar kids enjoy playing with? Let's hear it right from Michelle:
"My children LOVE the noisy toys," says the mom of 19. "They love anything that moves, if it's something to sit on, ride on, skate around on."
But things were very different back when Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar had a "small" family (you know, only 9 kids).....
"We never really did a whole bunch of toys," explains Jessa. "Some of our favorite things were cardboard boxes and Duct Tape -- making houses or whatever -- and then play outside all the time."

What kinds of toys do your kids love? What did you like to play with when you were little?

Night Owls Duggars

Have you ever seen the Duggars between 5:00AM and 8:00AM? If you have, you know that they are not morning people. So what's the opposite of a morning person? I'll give you a hint: Hoooot, Hooooot.
"We aren't morning people," explains Jessa. "We just haven't grown up that way; our parents are both night owls."
"We get our energy at about 9:00 at night -- we're ready to go!" says Michelle. "We have like another 4 or 5 hours under our belt. But the mornings then, of course, are a little bit later. For us, 7:00 is early."

Are you a morning person, a nigh owl, or somewhere in between?

Happy Birthday, Michelle!

It's time to honor the loving, patient, devoted mom of 19....Happy Birthday, Michelle Duggar!

Duggars Chicken Out

Tune into TLC tonight at 9/8PM CST for "19 Kids and Counting" Duggars Chicken Out.
Having one or two kids with the chickenpox is bad enough, but what happens when twelve develop itchy, red sores at once? Jim Bob Duggar sure had his hands full!
Michelle and Josie were scheduled to return home to Springdale, but the break-out forced them to remain in Little Rock for a few extra weeks.

What is the greatest number of people who have been sick at once in your household? Can you beat twelve??

Do the Older Duggar Kids Dislike Helping with their Younger Siblings?

Actually, the older ones enjoy being with their younger siblings. "It's kind of cute now that we've got all these drivers," says mother Michelle. "Often, if they're going to run an errand for us in town, they ask, 'Can I take little so-and-so with me?' They really love their siblings." You'd think they would take any alone time that they can get their hands on, but that's just not the case.
Each of the older Duggars has a "buddy," a little one they watch out for. The older one shows the younger one "the ropes" and helps them with school and chores. Led by example, the little ones slowly learn to do more and more, until they can have a buddy of their own -- the day that they all long for.

Do you use the buddy system in your family? Why or why not?

Are the older Duggar kids in over their heads?

Of course the older ones are able to do more around the house than the younger ones (that’s just how it works), but they don't despise having to help out. Jill loves children, so she enjoys watching her younger siblings. Jessa likes to teach and is thrilled to have the opportunity to help homeschool the little ones.
The Duggar kids know that everything runs smoother when everyone pitches in. “They all feel like they are a very important part of life,” says Michelle, “and that teaches responsibility.”
With such a large family, it would be impossible for mom and dad to do everything, and the kids are learning important life skills as they help out.

Do your kids enjoy helping out at home? Did you (or do you) mind helping your parents?

Michelle and Josie Duggar, Home Sweet Home

Josie Duggar, released from the hospital in early June for the second time, is finally home! And not just to a rental house in Little Rock, but to the Duggars' rambling, 7,000 square foot home in Springdale, Arkansas.

Josie would have returned sooner, but 12 of her 18 siblings unexpectedly came down with the chickenpox. Michelle and her precious baby were forced to remain in Little Rock for 3 long weeks, while Jim Bob spent his days applying calamine lotion and reminding his kids not to scratch.

Now that everyone is home sweet home, the Duggars are getting back into the swing of things. It's hard to believe that Michelle's last day in Springdale was spent hanging Christmas ornaments and looking forward to Josie's March 18th due date, which arrived more than 3 months earlier than expected.
"It is good to be home," remarks the mother of 19. "It is surreal to be here."

And everyone is rejoicing because Josie, who entered this world with less than 2 pounds to her name, now weighs in at 9 pounds, 1 ounce. It's no wonder that doctors call her story a fairytale!

Can you imagine having 12 children with the chickenpox? We sure can't! Have you and your kids had the chickenpox yet?

Politics Leads to "19 Kids and Counting"

According to the Republican state chairman, Jim Bob was committing "political suicide" by running for Senate, but Jim Bob was certain that God wanted him to run for office. Politicians said that he would lose at least 98% of the votes. Jim Bob did much better than that, but he did not win the election.

The Duggars were confused, but they soon learned that it was all part of a plan, which helped bring the family to where they are today. Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar were surprised to discover that Associated Press had snapped a picture of their large family walking into the polls on election day. Things fell into place, and in 2003, the Duggars got their "claim to fame," in the form of an article in "Parents Magazine."

Just a few months later, the family was contacted by Discovery Health and began filming "14 Children and Pregnant Again," which soon received more views than any other show on the network. One thing lead to another, and after a few more documentaries, the Duggars signed on with TLC to film the weekly show "17 Kids and Counting," which turned into "18 Kids and Counting" and then become "19 Kids and Counting" with the birth of Josie Brooklyn.

Click here to read the "Parents Magazine" article that launched the Duggars' TV career.

*Just an interesting note. Although the article says it was written by Michelle Duggar, it was actually the work of a freelance writer who wrote it from Michelle's point of view, after interviewing the Duggar family.

Jim Bob Duggar for House of Representatives

Since the Duggars' appearance on "14 Children and Pregnant Again" back in 2004, they have caught the attention of millions of fans worldwide, but they were in the public eye well before that. Back in 1997, Jim Bob felt God calling him to politics. When the local seat was vacant, he decided to run for House of Representatives.
"I had not experience in politics," says Jim Bob, "and I was scared to death of public speaking. I had no credentials to speak of, except that I believed I could vote the right way on important issues, and I could encourage others to do the same."
Michelle and the Duggar kids (this was back when they had only nine children) helped Jim Bob with his campaign. Their hard work paid off. in November of 1998, Jim Bob won the election with 56 percent of the votes.
Just like they did when Josie was born, the Duggars moved to Little Rock and lived there until 2002.
And then Jim Bob felt called to run for Senate. Although he lost the election, the Duggars received an unexpected offer, which paved the way for their reality TV series on TLC.

Behind the Scenes: Josie's Return to the Hospital

In "19 Kids and Counting" Duggars at the Hospital, we saw Michelle Duggar recount her baby's return to the hospital just two days after she was brought home in early April. But what really happened in those dark morning hours of April 8th? Here's a behind the scenes look....
Michelle calls it one of the darkest moments of her life. "I was terrified. I was thinking, 'My baby is going to die. I am losing her now."' During her early morning feeding, Josie Duggar refused to eat and took a turn for the worst when her vitals dropped to dangerous levels. Michelle and Jill dialed 911, while Jessa and Jinger prayed desperately over their baby sister. In the ambulance, Michelle held Josie skin-to-skin to raise her body temperature and desperately asked God to save her infant's life. At the hospital, doctors tried frantically tried to stabilize her, while Michelle continued to pray. When Josie was finally in a stable condition, the Duggars began to breathe easier.
Have you ever experienced a medical emergency like Josie's? How did you find comfort and strength?

"19 Kids and Counting" Duggar Home Alone

This evening on "19 Kids and Counting" Duggar Home Alone...
Jason Duggar celebrated his 10th birthday by spending some one-on-one time with mom. "He is a sweet guy. He's very funny, he likes to joke and have fun" says Michelle Duggar. But he also has a tender heart and really enjoyed holding Josie at the hospital on his birthday.
When Jim Bob and the kids went off to the ATI home school conference in Big Sandy, Texas, Michelle stayed behind. As the mother of 19, it seems like she would enjoy some peace and quiet, but that's not the case!
"When my family's not there, it just doesn't seem right." Michelle would choose a dirty house full of people over a clean, empty house any day.
She spent a lot of time writing in the journal that she has kept since Josie was born. She needed a place to record her emotions and all the medical miracles that have happened in the preemie's life so far. "This will be her book one day," says Michelle.

Do you keep a journal?

Season Finale of "19 Kids and Counting"

Don't miss the season finale of "19 Kids and Counting!" Duggar Home Alone. As the mother of 19 kids, it is rare for Michelle Duggar to have much alone time, but when Jim Bob and the children travel to Big Sandy, Texas for the annual ATI Home School Conference, Michelle spends several days on her own. Is it possible to be lonely when a mother with this many kids gets some time off? Tune into TLC tonight at 9/8PM Central to find out!
Do you like alone time?

Jill Duggar's College Plans

*For an exclusive message from Jill Duggar revealing her updated college plans, click here to read our September 29th, 2011 post.
When asked if any of her kids are considering pursuing a higher education, Michelle Duggar announced that yes, Jill is looking into college right now. After spending time in the hospital with Josie, she is considering nursing.

"She literally loves people," Michelle told TLC. The Duggars encourage their children to go where God leads them. College might not be in the future for all of their 19 kids, but it will be for some.

Jill has also been studying in depth Spanish. Thanks to her older sister's careful instruction, Jennifer, who is not yet 3, is learning a new language. Some of her favorite phrases include "Por favor" and "Si, gracias." According to Michelle, Jill and Jenny are inseparable.

Do you know a second (or third) language? Are you teaching your children another language?
