Organization Tips from Michelle Duggar

Michelle Duggar has said that organization is not her strong suit, but as the mother of 19 children, she has learned the importance of maintaining order in her home.

To keep the house tidy and prevent dust from building up, she prefers shelves with doors rather than open shelves. Although de-cluttering can be a complex process in the Duggar home, Michelle makes a point of doing it regularly.

What organization tips do you have to share?

Thankful Duggars

Remember when we posted about Bethany's beautiful pencil drawings of the Duggar kids a couple years ago? Michelle sent a thank you letter to the talented artist back in October of 2011, but she recently made a YouTube video expressing her gratitude.

"We have them across one of our walls in our main living room area," said the mother of 19. "So we just thank you for using your talent and sharing your blessing with us..."

Interview with the Duggars

While in Washington D.C. for the annual March for Life, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar sat down with Cortney O'Brien from Townhall.com to discuss large family logistics and relationships. The Duggars also shared a touching story about how their show saved a life. Here are the highlights of the interview:

Cortney: What are some of the benefits or most fun parts about having such a large family?

Jim Bob: "We’re always going places and doing things. And I think in one sense, we have one of the funnest families in the world because there’s so many of us that it’s just non-stop fun.”

Jim Bob: "Even when we go do a work project. We can accomplish a lot in a short amount of time."

Michelle: "I think Jill summed it up one time. She said, 'People just don’t understand how much fun it is to be from a large family. It’s just like, the love multiplies, it doesn’t divide.’ So that’s why we named our book A Love that Multiplies."

Cortney: What are some of your other favorite activities as a family?
Michelle: "As far as energy activities, we love to go on bike rides..."

Jim Bob: "We’re always playing basketball and volleyball, and then in the front yard, the boys a lot of times are playing football. And the other night we went to [an] Arkansas Razorback versus Kentucky game."

Michelle: "Oh that was amazing. The kids love to sing. They’ll just break out singing when we’re driving down the road."

Jim Bob: "And they all love playing instruments together."

Michelle: "And entertainment. Just the fun of doing and saying the cutest little things kids do." The mother of 19 keeps track of her children's most memorable words in her iPhone.

Cortney: Say you hired a babysitter for a night. What instructions would you give them?

Michelle: "The babysitter or the children? I think I would instruct the children first." (laughing)

Jim Bob: "For years, my mom would watch our children when Michelle and I would go on a date each week. And of course, now a lot of our older daughters are - "

Michelle: "She still does sometimes. She’s still willing and available to do it."

Jim Bob: "Now, some of our older daughters are in their 20s, and so they watch the little ones...."

Jim Bob and Michele also discussed their relationship with their kids and with each other:
Jim bob: "I guess, the main thing we try to do as parents is keep up [with] the hearts of our children. Having heart-to-heart talks with children is very important, and for them to build, confess things, and make things right...."

Michelle: "And always purpose to treat each other with respect. No teasing, no calling names, no putting each other down, but truly showing respect..... You know, you’re gonna have those relationships for life, and you really want to cherish and nurture those even now...."

Jim Bob: "And I think really the foundation of a close-knit family first off is having a close relationship between husband and wife, and then the children’s relationship with the parents, and then the children’s relationship with each other. And there’s gonna be offences and things that happen, but making sure that each one of us humble ourselves and ask for forgiveness."

Michelle: "We’re really desiring to teach them to love, putting others before yourself. The acrostic we use is ‘JOY’ - Jesus first, others second, yourself last - and if you put it in that order, then it makes for a very peaceful, harmonious place to live. Even at Josie’s age, who is now four, our baby in our family, just encouraging her to realize, you know what you can serve your big brother, you can go and get him his cup and bring it to the table and help serve your brothers and sisters, even though you’re the youngest...."

Cortney: I read another interview you both did and I think, Jim Bob, it was you that said a writer emailed you and said that your show prevented them from having an abortion. I was wondering if that is something that encourages you both to continue doing the show?
Jim Bob: "Over the past ten years we’ve received several emails and letters from women who have said that after watching our show, they’ve decided to keep their baby. They’ve changed their perspective on the child - instead of seeing the child as a burden, they see the child as a blessing. But one mom in particular, back a couple years ago, she sent us a letter that said, ‘I was watching your show, 17 Kids and Counting.... I’d already gone in for my first initial appointment to have an abortion, and I was going to have an abortion the next day.... I flipped through the channels and saw your show.' And she said, 'Ya know, if that lady can do it with 17 kids, I can do it with one.' And she kept her baby."

Michelle: "And she sent a picture!"

Jim Bob: "And so that makes it all worth it. Our whole family really believes that the TV show is really not about us - it’s really about a ministry to share with the world that children are a blessing and a gift from God."

Words of Wisdom from Michelle

Michelle will be the first to tell you that she is by no means a professional parent. She is constantly reminding her children that life is a classroom, and there is something to learn from every situation.

As a mother of 19 children (and two in heaven), she has a lot of wisdom under her belt. Let's take a look at a few of her favorite sayings. Michelle shares these quotes with her children on a regular basis, so if you watch the show, you will see the kids putting them to practice (or at least making an honest effort).

1. Look for benefits in the trials you are facing.

2. To be a friend, you must show yourself friendly.

3. Sincerity is being as genuine on the inside as we appear to be on the outside.

4. Guard your heart by what you hear, see, and think.

5. Be an energy giver, not an energy taker.

6. Think before you speak. Words have the power to hurt or heal.

7. If you can't say something nice, then don't say nothin' at all.  (coined by Thumper in Bambi)

8. Whisper when in a public place.

9. Do all things without grumbling or complaining.

10. Think of one good quality you see in a person, and share it with them.

Michelle on Cravings

Pregnancy cravings. They can be as ordinary as strawberries, bagels, or chocolate and as off-the-wall as egg roles, gummy bears, or, yes, even toothpaste. I even heard of a woman who craves the taste of baby powder. I'm actually jealous of the one. If you were ever in an awkward conversation, it would be a great icebreaker. "My name is Jane, and I crave baby powder."
But back to the Duggars.....
So what does Michelle Duggar crave when she's pregnant?

"It's always pickles or lemons," the mom of 19 told TLC, "things that are sour or salty." So craving pickles isn't just an old wives tale. You've heard it right from Michelle Duggar, Baby Expert.

What do you crave?

Michelle and Josie Duggar, Home Sweet Home

Josie Duggar, released from the hospital in early June for the second time, is finally home! And not just to a rental house in Little Rock, but to the Duggars' rambling, 7,000 square foot home in Springdale, Arkansas.

Josie would have returned sooner, but 12 of her 18 siblings unexpectedly came down with the chickenpox. Michelle and her precious baby were forced to remain in Little Rock for 3 long weeks, while Jim Bob spent his days applying calamine lotion and reminding his kids not to scratch.

Now that everyone is home sweet home, the Duggars are getting back into the swing of things. It's hard to believe that Michelle's last day in Springdale was spent hanging Christmas ornaments and looking forward to Josie's March 18th due date, which arrived more than 3 months earlier than expected.
"It is good to be home," remarks the mother of 19. "It is surreal to be here."

And everyone is rejoicing because Josie, who entered this world with less than 2 pounds to her name, now weighs in at 9 pounds, 1 ounce. It's no wonder that doctors call her story a fairytale!

Can you imagine having 12 children with the chickenpox? We sure can't! Have you and your kids had the chickenpox yet?

What Makes Michelle Duggar a Good Mom?

What makes Michelle a good mother? Her children say that she is always there for them. The past four months have been a roller coaster, with Josie in the hospital and 17 kids at home to love and care for, but Michelle has kept it together. She is the mother of 19 but is still able to make time for each child. Her patience with her kids, even when they disobey, is so encouraging. Some may call her Wonder Woman, but others just call her a MOM.

What makes your mom special?

Michelle is receiving the Mother of the Year Award in San Antonio this summer. Click here to read more.

To celebrate Mother's Day, TLC is posting video clips on Twitter of the Duggar kids saying Happy Mother's Day to Michelle. Click here to see the videos.

Labor Tips from Michelle Duggar: What is your Opinion?

Michelle Duggar, mother of 19, has been pregnant for nearly 12 years of her life! So what can the rest of us learn from her? The following suggestions are not just for women. It is also important for men to know how to help their wives during labor. Even if you are not planning on having children, these tips can be mentally stored for later on in life or can be passed on to a friend.

Here are some ways Michelle Duggar increases her comfort during labor:
  • Apply Tiger Balm onto the lower back
  • Lie on the couch with a hot pad on the lower back
  • Don't just lie in bed during contractions. If possible, move around. Michelle Duggar has learned to move with her labor.
  • Try not to raise your voice during contractions. A midwife taught Michelle to "moan lie a cow" instead.
  • Relax; don't tighten up your face or other muscles during contractions.
What do you think about these tips? Do you have anything to add?
