'Tomboy Joy' Recap

Counting On "Tomboy Joy"
  • Jessa brings the boys over to the Duggar house so she and Jana can discuss a gift basket for Joy and Austin that the siblings will all contribute to. The theme will be “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.”
  • Down in Laredo, Jinger is working on “something blue.” She spray-paints a tub and picks out a bunch of fun blue items to put in it.
  • Jessa gathers a bunch of unused kitchen items to pass on to Joy, as the “something borrowed.” She also copies the family’s favorite recipes for her sister.
  • Josiah, Jedidiah, and Jeremiah venture into the Duggar warehouse to find “something old.”
  • The Duggar warehouse is filled with everything you can imagine—old house items, broken toys, industrial equipment, fitness equipment, antiques, and much more. “Oh I’m sure there’s some hidden treasures, but we don’t really know what they are because they’re hidden,” says John.
  • The boys settle on an old camping stove, which they are surprisingly able to start.
  • For "something new," Jana uses permanent markers to decorate matching "Mr." and "Mrs." hardhats. Then all the siblings sign them.
  • Growing up, Joy enjoyed spending time with her brothers (six below her and two above her).
  • “When I first met Joy, she was spunky, outgoing, fun to be around,” says Jeremy. “We got along really well, and she said, hey, you’ve gotta come out and visit the family sometime. And then she ran off, and Ben turned to me and said, ‘Joy likes you? Joy’s not impressed with anybody.’ And so he said, ‘That’s good.’”
  • Joy really enjoys spending time with her younger siblings. “My relationship with the little kids is very strong,” says Joy. “I hope they look up to me. I’ve tried to invest into their lives and spend time with them and make them feel really special.”
  • She is especially close with Jill, James, and Jennifer, the three others on her buddy team.
  • Before she got married, Joy went flying with John to learn the ropes of operating a plane. Austin has his pilot’s license, and Joy says she is interested in pursuing hers.
  • Austin lived in Texas until he was about eight years old, when his family moved to Northwest Arkansas and met the Duggars. He speaks very highly of his parents, saying they are hard workers and dedicated to their family. “Growing up in a small family was a lot different than the Duggars, but I kind of always wanted more siblings,” says Austin, who has one older sister.
  • Joy says she was first attracted to Austin when he shared his testimony while at the Duggars' house.
  • "I am a little nervous about marriage and being a wife," says Joy. "But I'm excited."
  • "I'm looking forward to just getting to experience life with my best friend and to have her beside me," says Austin. "And I'm very excited to start a family with her."
Next week's episode will be a two-hour special featuring footage from Joy and Austin's wedding, as well as more from Joseph and Kendra as they move into engagement.

    1. TLC will not allow it, but a hint- if you search for the TLC listed series and episode number, you WILL find it there :)

    1. Most of the recipes were family favorites, which can be found on our Recipes page (http://www.duggarfamilyblog.com/p/recipes.html).

      Have a blessed day,

    2. Can we get the recipe for Rumbles Casserole?

    3. Jessa and her brothers made that lovely cooking show-style video of her making a "meat and potato bake." You know, the one where the (ground) meat cooked for like 45 minutes and Jessa burned her mouth eating it straight from the oven?

    4. What does Jessa's burning her mouth have to do with anything? Sometimes I'm in a hurry to eat my delicious cooking and do the same. :)

  3. Can you list who was on each buddy team? I have always wondered!

  4. How would you like to have given Jessa some shower or wedding gifts, and then seen them last night being pulled out from a cabinet, tags still on, Jessa making remarks about not using them, and then putting them in a metal tub to give to her sister? Jessa gave that segment a whole "I got a bunch of stuff I didn't want or need" ungrateful vibe. No mention of how generous the givers had been to her. No mention of how happily blessed she was to have received so many nice gifts from such wonderful people. Just a feeling of "I can finally get rid of this random stuff I don't want" that didn't come across as very nice. If you're going to regift, do it privately! Or donate it to a charity. Don't make a show of it.

    1. Yikes, I didn't see that -- sounds pretty rude!

    2. I thought the same thing. It's uncouth to be shown getting rid of things that other people went out of their way to buy for you and send or give to you. I felt bad for the givers, if they saw their gifts there.

    3. She did mention being grateful, while also poimting out in a self deprecating way that she's not a very good cook & does mot cook much, whereas Joy loves to cook & makes many things drom scratch. She said that she received multiples of items & some that she knew she would never/has never used bc of the type of cook she is & thought they would have a better home at Joy's.

Why on earth are so many of you so negative about this family &/or so willing to interpret their motives & intentions in negative ways??

If you don't care for some on the show then simply don't watch. You certainly needn't comment if you have nothing but negative things to say.

    4. We all have dishes that we don’t use!! Do get so high and mighty. I know I do!!

    5. I have to admit that would have hurt my feelings if I seen someone give away with tags still on something that I had lovingly picked out for them. People's love and generosity to us should be respected and appreciated.

    6. The are a family who says buy second and save money and they all like it. I wouldn't care if someone gave away my present... at least anybody can't think bad about me for not buying one.

    7. There was a post from someone on another page who said she had sent a small gift of some placemats to Jessa when she got married. Low and behold she spied them among the things Jessa was going to give away! She said she had stopped being a fan a while ago, but felt it was rude of Jessa to do that, and I think felt foolish for sending the gift in the first place. I agree re gift privately, especially when strangers who watch your show send you gifts (some of whom can probably ill afford it) it shows a lack of respect.

    8. Once someone gives you a gift, it's yours to do with as you please. BUT... That does NOT include giving it away while the original giver might be watching! Those married girls should know better than to put their gifts on TV while the gifts are going out the door to someone else. Were these girls not taught any manners? It was poor taste on the part of whatever producer came up with that segment idea, and just as poor taste for Jessa to go along with the idea.

    9. 1:07 Why on earth strangers would send gifts to TV personalities in the first place is beyond me. The Duggars have no shortage of friends and family to buy them gifts. You are right, in that Jessa should not have given those things away on TV. Better to do that in private.

  5. While I enjoy watching, this season seems off. There is so much wedding planning that I find it boring. I don't need to see 5 episodes on the same subject. The only thing these episodes showed me was that maybe Joy was not ready for marriage. Perhaps she was a little too young. Her indecisiveness was troubling. I hope we don't see the same situation with Joe and Kendra's wedding. While I wish them all the best I find myself tuning out due to lack of content.

    1. Tell me about it! For a second year TLC are putting on things like Joys wedding (AGAIN), 5 months after it happened. Anyone out of tlc can see that will lose viewers :(

  6. I thought this episode was more interesting than the other pre-wedding "all about" episodes done for the rest of them so far.

  7. Are the Duggars going to be on the "Hoarders" show? That storage place was terrible!

  8. I just loved the first commercial (for another TLC program) during the show last night, with the 4-letter word. Duggars, time to pull yourselves off of a network that does not have the same values you do.

    1. That is the reason most people I know stopped wAtching it, because of what TLC promotes now. It use to be a good network at one-time but anything goes on there now. Like my sister said about why she got rid of the TLC network, I wouldn't sit in a bar to sell anything nor will I sit and watch TLC to help them sell their debauchery. God said Dont even have an appearance of evil. I wish TLC was the way it use to be.

    2. Those commercials for 90 Day Fiancee are terrible! And very inappropriate to air during Counting On.

    3. Actually, they aired that commercial twice during the show. In case you weren't offended enough the first time.

    4. Remember when it used to be The Learning Chanel? They had shows on medicine and rare medical disorders that I found very interesting. They also had stories on bringing home baby...I liked those!

    5. I remember how TLC used to be. It really was The Learning Channel and it even had children's programming. Now it's more like Terrible Loathsome Channel. We don't have cable so we aren't able to watch Counting On. It's too bad UPTV couldnt take the show but since they already have Bringing Up Bates and Growing Up McGhee so they might not want to take another show. But if they did they could call the block of programs " Big Night of Families".

    6. I have no problem with the Duggar family acting about passing on things in the show because all viewers know the family has done it for years!
As for TLC, they have become the weird channel, they follow people loosing 600lb, transgender, disappeared people, evil stepmothers etc etc 15 different places of wedding dress buying.

      Delete
    7. I to don't like the commercials, but I just switch the channel for a few minutes. I honesty don't think the UPTV is going to bring them on board, because of the different things that came out about the family. I love the Duggar family and won't give up on them. They are a godly family and have given me good wholesome entertainment. God Bless...Jane

    2. No we have not see both weddings. They are reshowing Joy's wedding because Somepeople didn't get to see it the first time. They haveing show Joe's wedding yet.

  10. Why did Austin say he wished he had more siblings? He HAS more siblings, from his father's first marriage. Does he not acknowledge them?

    2. How did you come by this info?

    3. Anon @ 9:39 It was recently disclosed that Austins father was married before and has two other children from that marriage. I can't remember where I saw it but there was a picture of his half sister at his wedding to Joy, so they do have contact.

    4. I read it on Radar I think. Terry divorced first wife Julia. Two kids from that marriage.

    5. I would think he wanted younger siblings.

    6. This is 9:39 Thanks 3:38! Although, Radar is not always an accurate source, so I would try to find info backing that up on at least one other site. Not that it is not true, but people say things about the Duggar's and anyone related to them very often.

  11. I didn't like Joy's stating that her graduation was better than other high school graduations. Once again she was saying that, like her bachelorette party, the way her family does things is superior to the rest of the world. First, how does she know about other graduations, and second, her family isn't the only family to throw a graduation party!

    1. That bothered me too, 6:13.

    2. Oh, my gosh!!! Perhaps she meant better than her other siblings graduations. It seems as though some people watch to find something negative. Personally, I was not offended.

    3. Well, duh! Of course her party was better. It was for her.
