'Joy and Austin's Camping Trip' Recap

Counting On "Joy and Austin's Camping Trip"

  • The wedding is less than three weeks away, and Joy is headed to a salon with Kendra to try out hairstyles. Joy tells the hairstylist that her first date with Austin was last August.
  • This is the first time Kendra has had her hair styled by a professional.
  • Joy has her hair done in a full up-do, while Kendra does a half-back. Afterwards, a male makeup artist does the girls’ makeup, complete with fake eyelashes.
  • Down in Central America, Jill takes footage of the Dillards playing outside. At age two, Israel loves food, is very talkative, and is also very adaptable and easygoing.
  • Meanwhile, Austin is working on the house with Jed. “We’re probably not going to have the whole house done in two weeks, but I’m still hoping we can have maybe the kitchen and bedroom and bathroom,” says Austin.
  • Later that week, the older siblings and their friends (about 20 people total) are packing for Joy and Austin’s joint bachelor/bachelorette party. They plan on kayaking/rafting down the Mulberry River, cooking out, and sleeping in tents/hammocks.
  • Joy is adamant that no one “cheats” and brings a motorhome. “In general, our family, when it comes to camping, we enjoy camping with having everything we could ever need,” says Josiah. “Camping in a camper type camping.”
  • “We’re less the camping type,” says Jeremy of he and Jinger. “I think we’re more the civilization type.”
  • Jana is a little less thrilled about the camping and is glad it’s only for one night, but she is determined to have fun.
  • Down in Laredo, Jinger and Jeremy pick out platters for Joy and Austin’s rehearsal dinner. They will be serving fajitas.
  • “I guess most people for their bachelor and bachelorette parties, they go do drinking and dancing and whatever else I don’t even know, but for us, we prefer…not as wild [parties],” says Joy.
  • “I’m just hoping we don’t flip because it’s a little chilly out here, and that water I hear is really cold,” says Jana.
  • Austin flips his canoe on the first rapid. When Joy tries out Austin’s kayak, she flips, as well.'
  • When the group makes it to the campsite, they set up tents and hammocks. They are concerned that the trees have poison ivy, so they attach the hammocks to their trucks.
  • "It's mixed emotions anytime somebody is getting married in our family," says Jana. "It's going to be hard to let [Joy] go."
  • While everyone is sitting around the campfire, Laura hosts a round of the shoe game for Joy and Austin.
  • Although the temperatures drop overnight, everyone enjoys the camping trip.
  • The Seewalds go shopping at a thrift store with Spurgeon, Henry, Jackson, and Tyler. Jessa gives an explanation on Tyler. As we have said, he is the Duggars’ cousin whose mom is in a difficult situation. Jim Bob and Michelle have taken him in and now have legal guardianship of him.
  • At the end of the shopping trip, Jessa finds some stick horses and rocking horses. Ben would rather not purchase them. He isn’t sure they will fit in the van, and he isn’t thrilled about buying secondhand stuffed animals that are attached to wood and cannot be cleaned.
  • “Whenever you have a disagreement, I think it’s really just important to be patient,” says Ben. “I was trying to think, is this really that big of a deal? She really wants to get these, so [I’ll] just let her get them.”
  • “You’re two different people,” says Jessa. “You’re going to have different ideas about things from time to time, but don’t let little things become big things.”
  • They end up buying the stick horses and rocking horses.

  1. Soaking wet and freezing cold and Porta-Potties does not sound like a fun time at all, let alone a bachelor(ette) party.

    2. Well if it was what Joy and Austin wanted then I hope that if their friends had those thoughts, they kept them to themselves

  2. "His mom was in a challenging situation." Well I guess that's one way to put it. But why does it remind me of the time they explained what... Well, they sure have a way of downplaying important things in this family when they're on camera, don't they.

    1. OK so,if you were that child Tyler for example, and you were taken in by a family member who will raise you, whether temporary or permanently, would you want all your business aired on TV or posted on the internet, all the details for your classmates to read and see, and tease you about? No? OK.

      Delete
    2. Maybe because it's not the world's business why Tyler was removed from his mom. Try to have some sensitivity.

    3. Despite the Duggar's choice in sharing their lives on TV, I think we can all agree that their extended family should have all the privacy they desire. It really is non of the public's business what the details are about Tyler's mother.

    4. I really wish the wording in the Recap highlight was different. "Michelle and Jim Bob have taken him in"- That makes him sound like an abandoned pet or something. That could have been phrased a lot more sensitively or just have stated that Michelle and Jim Bob are his legal guardians, period. How embarrassing for Tyler. :(

    5. I personally think the Duggaes have already shown too much of Tyler. If you are going to protect a childs privacy then they should not be showing photographs of him or having him on the show. The girls are currently suing their county for violating their privacy as children, Tyler also deserves the same privacy. I realise the circumstances are very different but family problems can also be embarrassing and hurtful for others to know, the fans do not need to know anything about this young boy, and the Duggars need to keep him out of the spotlight.

And what gender was the hairstylist? (you mentioned that the makeup artist is male, so now I am wondering.)

  4. A bit judgemental of Joy to assume that "most people" drink and dance and whatever at their bachelor/bachelorette parties. I have been part of 3 different weddings and none have involved drinking and dancing. Dinners, ceramic painting, going to an Escape Room have been a few of the activities.

    1. This is apparently what they've been told about "worldly" dating and engagement activities. I thought that was very insightful, for Joy to say that she thought most people did those "sinful" activities. How would she know, if she hadn't been told or warned by someone? But as you said, OP, we know that isn't the truth. I went to a beach house for a weekend and my friends and I mostly sat on the balcony, watching the waves roll in while we talked. We had wine with dinner, so I guess that puts us in the "bad bachelorette party" category, huh.

      Delete
    2. I agree. Joy is very naive. For my daughter's bachelorette, the girls went to a local "learn to paint" place and all got lessons. They then went out to an Indian restaurant and came back to one of the bride's maid"s home for cake- No alcohol because everyone was driving. And if there was alcohol, it would have been only wine. The boys had a board game night, complete with chips and dip. They also had a joint get-together where they went axe-throwing. Yup, the girls participated too.

      Delete
    3. I think it depends on your group of friends. There are a lot of people who go partying, but obviously that's not what all people do.

      Delete
    4. We each had a nice dinner with friends. I had some wine, though I don't know where that falls into Joy's spectrum of "wild drinking." I probably didn't have any more than Jesus and his people did. And nobody had to sleep in a tree in the cold.

      Delete
    5. Makes me laugh when people say she’s being “judgmental” about the whole partying thing. Read what she says “but for us, we prefer….not as wild [parties].” She never says people who do those things are evil, and she said “for US, we PREFER.” If I came up and said to you, “I prefer TO drink and dance and party wild” would I be judging you for NOT drinking? And really, wouldn’t you say the typical bachelorette and bachelor parties have some amount of alcohol involved? She didn’t say “EVERYBODY else ALWAYS drinks/dances/goes wild at their parties.” She was simply noting a common trend and getting in a tizz because she has HER opinion and because she’s noting something SHE’s seen or heard is kind of ridiculous.

    6. Neither my spouse nor I had a bachelor/bachelorette party, nor did any couple we've ever known. None of felt that we were "giving up or freedom" or our friends or anything else that we'd miss to get married.

  5. Joy didn't want people cheating by bringing a motor home on the camping trip. Maybe she should watch the past episode where some of the Duggars went for survival training and they brought a motor home along to sleep in

    1. This was like Drill Sergeant Joy last night, barking orders at people.

    2. She's lucky she's on a TV show, otherwise probably nobody would have gone.

      Delete
    3. Joy is challenging to watch. She's very defensive, very aggressive.

      Delete
    4. I don't understand all the hostility about Joy's choice of bachelorette party. If she wants to go camping, and she wants more outdoor-centric camping, then that's what she should get. It's about her, and Austin. I have been in a similar position as a person who enjoys camping and knows their friends don't as much, and it puts you in a defensive position to begin with if you want to do something and know that everyone else might not as much. Her family is clearly bad at doing anything outside of their comfort zones (as demonstrated by Joy herself when she talked about other people's bachelorette parties) so some "pushing" might have been necessary

      Delete
    5. It was silly to call that a bachelorette party. All they did was go camping overnight. They could have done that any time, married or not.

      Delete
    6. I don't necessarily think Joys way of looking at "others" bachloreette parties is the problem here. I believe its more the overall behavior of Joy in these recent episodes. She came across as judgmental, aggressive and bossy. She was also a bit rude to Miss Renee. We just aren't use to seeing her act in that manner. What happened to the quiet, sweet Joy?

      Delete
    7. 1:50, I get the feeling that deep down, something is "bugging" her about the way this transition to married life is happening, but she can't say and hasn't said. Is she sad at leaving? She hasn't said. Feeling pressured into having a big wedding she doesn't want? She won't say. Worried about the house not being done? She tried to laugh that off, but who wouldn't be worried about having to "rough it" for months? She's got a lot of repressed feelings, and the more we see of her leading up to the wedding, the more obvious it is.

      Delete
    8. I never hear of joint parties before. When I got married we just had the girls come over to my friends has and played games. No drink was aloud.

I didn't even have alcohol at my reception If anyone brought it in they were kicked out. I don't like people drink at all.

      Delete
    9. What happened to the quiet sweet Joy, you ask? She got a big head after getting engaged.

  6. So Joy thinks most people drink and dance and whatever at their parties. Time to climb down from the moral high ground Joy. Nothing wrong with drinking or dancing and it can even be done without being "wild"

    2. Agree 9:54. AANNDD it often leads to immoralities which any Christian should be against. Just stay away from all those temptations if it gets you into trouble.

    3. And it doesn't always get wild. Joy seems to forget that responsible people can act accordingly.

    4. Drinking and dancing can get wild? So can co-ed overnight camping trips

    5. 10:37: Society is all about "acceptance," until someone's beliefs make them feel guilty about something they're doing.

      Delete
    6. @9:54. Joy shouldn't be making broad judgements and finger pointing about something she knows nothing about. There have been more than one or two Duggar episodes that were to "wildly" inappropriate for my children's viewing ears and eyes as well.

      Delete
    7. Yes it "can" or it can stay just fun! What does Joy know about drinking and dancing?

      Delete
    8. So can a bunch of young adults camping. This family sure can still finger point and judge everyone for sins they assume everyone else is committing while covering those happening in their back yard. But, oh, those are just "mistakes".

      Delete
    9. Kelly,if you have followed the Duggar family for a long time, you would know that they don't "dance" at all and they don't drink alcohol. That is their choice, and it may be your choice to do both of those things, and that is fine it is your choice. The beauty is we don't have to choose what other people choose to do for fun,we can choose something else!

      Delete
    10. 9:42. I don't think it's about choice, but Joy's judgy attitude.

      Delete
    11. I am sorry folks, but joy didn't come up with the idea that drinking and dancing at parties are wild. People who get wild at parties because of drinking and dancing set the reputation themselves. So it is natural to assume that those parties can get wild. Yes, some don't get out of control, but A lot do.

      Delete
    12. Mistakes or curiosity, 3:05.

    13. I don't care if you yourself and your friends drink wine(or other beverages), and dance but don't get wild. The truth is that some get out of hand. Just because I state the truth doesn't mean I am being judgemental. I can't say joy was or was not judging, but she stated a truth that is generally known. I myself believe it is wise to stay away from those things.

      Delete
    14. Joy never said it was sinful and wrong to do these things. Don't be so offensive folks. I know she doesn't believe in doing them, but she didn't come out and say these things were wrong. Give her a break. She was stating a simple fact. That doesn't mean she was judging.

      Delete
    15. Exactly, 11:03! That's just the reputation that those parties have earned for themselves. If you asked me what a typical bachelor/bachelorette party involved, that's what would immediately come to my mind. And no, I've never been to one like that.

    1. My thought was that they spent more for that rehearsal dinner and went to more fuss than they did for the wedding reception! Did those big bowls go into the Duggar Warehouse afterwards, to collect dust?

    2. I think they were going for an authentic look....not plastic platters from your standard big box store

      Delete
    3. The show had to film them doing something, and I guess they had nothing better to do. Also the Duggerz love packing excessive amounts of items in suitcases for air travel that could have just as easily been purchased at the destination.

      Delete
    4. Right??!!!!! I found that segment to be very strange. Did they drive back to Arkansas? Did they fly with a suitcase full of platters? A party supply business would have all those things for rent

    5. Probably not like the Talivera style Mexican pottery. More selection in Larado.

      Delete
    6. No wonder their weddings cost so much! Their saying, buy used save the difference, hardly goes with their lifestyle anymore. I understand with a wedding you probably don't want to go with a bunch of used stuff but the principle should still apply as their weddings seem to get more extravagant as each one gets married. Who paid for all the expense of a gazillion candleholders and candles at joes wedding? I can't hardly afford myself 2 of them when you go see how much they are at hobby lobby. To me it would've been much more elegant to have a lot less candleholders and candles. Simple is and can be very beautiful! I felt like it was too much of a distraction from looking at was really important-Joe and Kendra.

    7. Probably not the pretty Mexican ones they bought.

    8. It was a nice touch to bring authentic platters to the rehearsal. It shows cultural appreciation to buy from local artisans and not replicas closer to home, which could be characterized as cultural appropriation.

    2. You should remember that we are watching a one hour segment of their lives weekly, so it’s hard to judge off of that. I’m sure it wasn’t Jessa’s idea for Ben to be part of a Christian rap/hip-hop song (Duggars don’t listen to rap music) but she went anyways.

      Delete
    3. I'd like to see that too. I think Ben needs to work outside the Duggar compound and start getting around other people besides family. He is staring to come off as weak and passive. He needs some man time with unrelated men. Poor guy

  12. Joy was back to her usual self last night, telling Josie to get off the counter, ordering everyone to pack for the camping trip, and daring to jump from that rope swing. Where was that Joy when it was time to shop for a wedding dress? We saw a meek, quiet, crying girl last week. Makes you think she didn't want to go through that big ordeal of getting filmed while trying to decide on a dress, doesn't it?

    1. Didn't someone on here just ask about Josie climbing around? And then bam - there she was last night, up on the counter again. She's a bit old for those antics.

    2. or that she just really dislikes shopping. You can be decisive in somethings and not others.

      Delete
    3. No, it just showed that she was stressed, like most brides.

      Delete
    4. The things you listed are in her comfort zone; dress shopping is not.

      Delete
    5. I've been watching older episodes lately, and more than once they told us that Joy really really really does not like shopping for more than five or ten minutes. No wonder the wedding dress shopping was an ordeal for her!

      Delete
    6. It makes no difference if Joy once said that she like shopping or not. She had a task to do that day, and a lot of people (a whole town, and our Blog moderator) went out of their way for her. A lot of plane tickets were bought by someone, and travel expenses paid. A designer worked hard on some expensive dresses, put up with a camera crew maneuvering around her merchandise, and arranged for food. Joy was very rude to act as if she had no interest being there or doing that. She was 25 days away from getting married. Did she think a dress was going to magically appear on her bed some morning, put there by Cinderella's mice? Weddings take work. If you can't get enthusiastic about yours, then elope. But don't go through the motions half-heartedly, crying and saying you don't know or care what to do, while others have worked so hard to help you. That is just plain wrong, no matter who you are.

      Delete
    7. Well said 12:31 and I think a lot of people felt the same way after that episode.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous @ 12:31- Excellent post and so true! Weddings are not all about the Bride and Groom by a long shot, especially an affair as big as a Duggar wedding. While I can sympathize with pre-Wedding stress with all the details and I'm not a big shopper either, Joy was rude to Renee. Had she been my daughter, filming would have ceased as I took her to the dressing room or outside for Mother-Daughter Conference and attitude adjustment. Not necessarily a dressing down, but just a reminder of who Jesus is and should be to Joy personally and how her choices should reflect her love for Jesus and honoring Him, and her love for her "neighbors", showing them respect and honor. Unfortunately, it not only reflected poorly on Joy, but also on Michelle and her parenting (particularly on Michelle as she's posted numerous times over the years how Joy lives up to her name: Jesus first, Others second, Yourself last).

      Delete
    9. If Joy didn't want a big 'fussy' wedding she should not have been forced to have one, what the bride and groom want their wedding to be is what should have happened, not what TLC or Jimbob wanted. I'm a big fan of little people big world, and Molly Roloff and her fiance decided to keep their wedding private and not televise it. Some pictures were released afterwards but I totally respect their decision, why could Joy and Austin not have done the same? If they didn't want all the fuss but were happy for it to be televised then why not film and show that type of wedding, lets face it it would have been more interesting than another cookie cutter wedding. It would have been interesting to see a duggar plan and carry out a wedding that was different to all her sisters that went before.

I hope he gets a job and becomes his own man and lives the life he wants to live. It would break my heart to see my Husband driving around my Dads property mowing his grass and doing odd jobs instead of waking up in the morning like he does and heads to work and earns good money and is his own man. I remember hearing Jessa say after she had one of her son's how she hadn't changed a dirty diaper yet, that Ben had been doing that for her. Nothing wrong with a Husband helping out but that was a few days after having the baby that she said that. Ben should get a job and start feeling good about himself. Jim Bob can mow his own grass.

I am beginning to think they stage thrift store visits for viewers since they have all kinds of money to fly here and there on vacations and visits. They are ways going to the amusement parks and all kinds of attractions. So why in the world would we be expected to believe that they are frugal and want to shop in thrift stores. The frugal ship sailed along time ago with the Duggars. You own 3 planes you are not frugal. Lol

    3. I was going to say the exact same thing...if i see one more thrift shopping episode im gonna scream...jk...enough already TLC

    4. If they expect us to believe that these people still shop at thrift stores - shop FIRST at thrift stores - shop ONLY at thrift stores - for clothing and other personal items, I'm not buying it. We've seen the designer purses, the shoes, the big phones, the laptops, the new wardrobes, the baby equipment, the household furnishings, etc. etc.

      Delete
    5. You can buy designer items at thrift stores and yard sales. You can also find brand new items with the tags still on them. Just because they save money in one area doesn’t mean they buy everything used.

I wouldn’t assume Jesse and Ben are rich no matter how many planes or vehicles Jim Bob purchases. I am sure splitting the money they make from the show between all the featured family members doesn’t give them a great income. I doubt Ben makes tons of money doing manual labor, so they probably do need to shop at thrift stores.

    2. None of that will kill lice or bedbugs. The thrift stores where I live stopped accepting stuffed toys of any kind for those reasons several years ago. I'm with Ben 100%. As for Jessa's comment, buying those stick horses was a very little thing, Ben wasn't being unreasonable, and she should have seen his heart, honored his concern for their sons, and bought them new ones this Christmas.

    3. Ben is a good Dad. Concerned for his children's health. They certainly have plenty of money to buy new stuffed toys...or skip the toys. I'm sure Spurgeon and Henry are not without toys. I'm not of the "obey" your husband mindset in the sense you can't ever have an opinion or do your own thing, but respect is just part of any good marriage. Jessa doesn't appear ( I know it's only what we see on tv) to respect Ben much. It appears Jessa is Queen Bee, and Ben the servant boy.

  21. I would like to know why Laura is always THERE? This family makes inane announcement after announcement, but has neglected to explain her presence. Does she now live there with them? Is she the new 'tutor"? Is she Jana's special friend? Why no explanation about her? It makes one wonder why the secrecy? Does she sleep in that curtained-off area of the girls' dormitory? Why would they allow someone who is not a blood relative to live and sleep in their home with sons of attraction age? Isn't that ungodly? Please get the truth and let us know about this.

    1. I think she's Jana's best friend

    2. I don't think it really matters that we know every little detail about their lives. I mostly take what I see on their show and in their pictures at face value, figure they'll tell us what they want us to know, and don't waste mental energy on trying to figure out things that aren't important to me personally.

    3. Laura is the wedding cornator.

    4. Anon @ 10:30 Laura is not the wedding co ordinator, Michelles friend Cindy was the co-ordinator. Laura is around a lot, I think she might be the younger childrens new tutor. I read somewhere that she is also support for Jana now all her older sisters have left home.

    5. I think Laura was the coordinator, but Cindy was in charge of the decorations.

    6. I have been hoping it might be that she and John David are getting to know each other. Both Jana and John David have expressed hope that whoever he ends up with will be close with Jana. Fingers crossed!

  22. If that is how they choose to celebrate- that is winderful. However ladies, although they are by a campfire did Joy have to wear dirty old shoes? It's a celebratory event- sneak a nice pair of sneakers in your gear!

    1. this event was not to be about vanity. Joy explicitly said no make-up was to be brought along

    2. Joy may have said that, but several of those girls are certainly wearing makeup in the video and pictures of this camp-out. LOL

    3. I wouldn't go if I'm told I can't bring make-up. That wasn't for Joy Anna to demand. If she chooses not to wear ant fine, but not her business nor her right to tell others what they can or can not put on their faces. Joy is just not very amiable. I admit I really have not enjoyed watching her.

    4. Agree. Joy is less than gracious. So far I haven't enjoyed anything where she has been the main focus. She was ungrateful...downright bratty..to Miss Renee. Saying "whatever" to someone who has worked to make 6 custom wedding gowns to cater to you is just beyond rude. She is aggressive and defensive when with siblings. Joy Anna is very immature with a know-it-all demeanor. Not flattering. Hopefully she will start to mature more graciously.

    1. I caught that, too, and thought it was rather a worldly thing to say, from someone who's not supposed to watch worldly TV.

    2. They don’t have to watch tv to hear common phrases. Some things get repeated and even people that don’t watch tv hear them and start using them.

    3. Not in the way she used the phrase. @ 12:16pm

  25. Have you not seen a male makeup artist before? Professional makeup artists of both sexes is really very common. Kind of like how male chefs are common, even though family cooking is traditionally women's work. :)

  26. I am a long time viewer of the Duggers, and these comments are so far behind the actual thing, joseph and Joy are married and Joy is three months pregnent, and the program airing is joy still getting married and Josepth and Kendra courting. by the time they get them both married the season will be over. need to see something new.

    1. There's no way this show can keep up with real life any more. By the time it airs, it's very old news. And it's not even shown in an interesting or exciting way. I don't know why TLC bothers. Time for some new shows.

      Delete
    2. I like it, so why don't you stop complaining, and let the people who still love this show watch in peace?

      Delete
    3. I enjoy the show as well. What they are showing happened earlier this year. They can’t show things a week or two aften they happen. They have to have time to edit, and Counting On isn’t the only show that has to be edited.

      Delete
    4. They can and have shown weddings within a week or two of them happening, remember?

    5. Didn't they show Jinger's wedding right after it happened? Or one of those weddings. They're all a designer dress and cupcake reception blur to me now.

    6. 11:02- I think you're expecting something from the entertainment industry, TLC in particular, that isn't realistic. They are in the business of making money and all that depends on the opinions of viewers. The only loyalty TLC has is to ratings, not individuals. People have a right to express their praise or complaints- you don't have to read them if they offend you. Ultimately, shows will survive if there are enough pleased fans. Time will tell if the Duggars remain on TV.

  27. What I enjoyed about the camping was how comfortable Joy and Austin seem with each other. They've been friends for a long while before they started courting and it shows. Their side hugs are relaxed, he even massaged her cold feet. They're friends first so what does it matter that the engagement was short and they're already pregnant. Clearly they're ready to progress past long time friends to happily ever after. Good for them, life should be a journey of happiness with those you love and this is just the start of their one.

    1. Massaging feet is pretty intimate; at least it ought to be by Duggar standards! This family is funny.

  28. Jessa commented on Joy and Austin's extensive home remodel, saying that she and Ben couldn't do much remodeling to their own home when they were getting married because it was a "rental". They actually DID do a complete remodel of that house...it didn't look anything like it did when Josh and Anna lived there...AND, it was not a rental, it was and is owned by the grandmother Mary Duggar.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Ben & Jessa didn't remodel it, the rest of the family did. And I don't know why Jessa wouldn't say that it was Grandma's old house, and Josh & Anna's place before that. Everyone knows. And it's known that B&J own it now.

      Delete
    2. They weren't the ones that remodeled it, for one thing. Her family did it as a surprise for them while they were on their honeymoon. Also, why wouldn't you assume that they're renting it from her grandmother since she called it a rental?

  29. Since the debut of the Duggar's many years ago, I have enjoyed watching this family grow, work and live together, have fun, etc. I understand why the TV show name changed but do not understand why JimBob and Michelle don't make many appearances. I miss seeing them and hearing their opinion on various topics, watching as they bring up their family and general interactions in life. I say, Give JimBob and Michelle more time on the show, "Counting On."
