Kendra's Oatmeal Cookies

Happy Friday! Let's celebrate the weekend with a Duggar recipe. If you've been a longtime reader of the blog, you have probably seen the Duggars' oatmeal cookie recipe listed on our Recipes page. And perhaps you have even tried making them.

Oatmeal cookies are Joseph Duggar's favorite, and Kendra Caldwell Duggar has a different recipe that she would like to share with fans. In the video below, Joe and Kendra give a tutorial.

  1. This made me smile. Love to see Joe this happy, and Kendra is such a sweet girl! So happy for them.

  2. Do I have to hold hands with my fiance(e) and gaze at him/her adoringly while I make these?

    1. YOU don't have to, but let them.

    2. Ha ha! That is hilarious.

    3. Of course! Why not? I would. I gaze at my hubby all the time. I'm sure those who lost their significant others in the Las Vegas shooting would give anything to hold their hands or tell them they love them again.

    4. Of course you can! Go for it. No one will judge you.

    5. Yes. Makes them taste better. And by your bitter comment, sounds like you could use some sweetness.

    6. Yes, of course you do.

    7. Thanks for clearing that up, 8:14! I always kick stray kids, animals, and husbands out of the kitchen when I'm busy in there. Guess I'm doing it wrong!

    8. I'm going to ha e to agree with Anon 10:54 AM. I know that if my husband had died from his heart attack back in January, it would have been devastating not to hold his hand and yes gaze at him ever again. I can't even imagine what those people are going through.

  3. I'm confused... are they practicing for a cooking/baking show together? If Kendra wanted to share a cookie recipe, the best way is just to copy/paste the text. Why the video?

    1. A lot of people do cooking videos. There's no harm in that.

    2. BECAUSE FANS LIKE TO SEE THEM. How difficult is it to not watch if you're not interested.

    3. If you are a regular visitor to this blog, you would notice many things are taped. Nothing wrong with us seeing the newlyweds make these instead of just reading a recipe that is boring.

  4. The recipe sounds very good. Do wish the girls would tie their hair back when working in the kitchen

    1. I agree. If I saw someone push back her hair and touch her face while making food, I probably wouldn't eat it. That would be a big health code violation in a commercial kitchen. Gross!

    2. really people? shes making cookies for herself and her husband I dont think its a huge deal its not like shes cooking for a business

  5. That kitchen is gorgeous! Isn't that the kitchen from the mini mansion Jill and Derick lived in? Are Joe and Kendra living there now?

    1. This video was made before they got married.

    2. I think maybe this video was made before the wedding. They might have chosen that kitchen because it was really nice and secluded.

    3. Guys...the lack of rings sort of gives it away!

  6. Looks yummy! My youngest would like these because it doesn't contain raisins which she doesn't like.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can eliminate raisins from any recipe.

      Delete
    2. I will have to try this recipe too, since oatmeal cookies are my husband's favorite but will have to add raisins because he loves them in his oatmeal cookies. Lol

  7. Good job with this video and the cookies!
My twist is to add dried cranberries and mini chocolate chips! I bake them as bars instead of cookies.

  10. Shoot, I was hoping they wouldn't unclasp their hands and make the entire recipe holding hands!

  12. They are such an adorable couple.

  13. Kendra puts those cookies in the oven like it's going to bite her!

  14. A nice kitchen like that and no mixer or heavy mixing bowl?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I know. Who mixes heavy dough like that with a whisk and a spoon?

      Delete
    2. Looks like those expenses aren't necessary. They did just fine.

      Delete
    3. This is really what you got out of this video and felt the need to comment about? Mixing cookie dough by hand works perfectly well.

      Delete
  15. Cookies are easier and work out better if you mix the dry ingredients together first, and then mix the wet with wet, then add the wet to the dry. Basics :)) They look good, though!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's what I was thinking, too. Cream butter, add sugar, add egg, and then go with the dry stuff. Cookies 101.

      Delete
    2. The whisk isn't the right thing for the butter. Much easier to cream the butter and sugar with a wooden spoon.

      Delete
    3. And even much easier with a mixer!

      Delete
  16. Very cute, it is nice to see this happy couple.

  17. Why didn't Kendra use a mixer instead of doing it my hand it would have been faster.

    1. Mixers mix the batter really well. That is the secret (as least for me) to good cookies.

      Delete
    2. Was this the couple with a stand mixer on their wedding registry?

      Delete
    3. I don't own a big mixer because I try to save money and also like to keep my kitchen counters clear of big bulky stuff. I have a hand mixer for stuff that requires it, but usually a little elbow grease works just fine. Moving your body is a good thing, folks!

      Delete
    4. I made cookies all the time without a mixer when I was a kid. Easy peasy.

  19. Did she compliment him on cracking eggs?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes! Wasn't that a wonderful example of the little things we can do to build strong marriages?

      Delete
    2. Complimenting egg cracking is what I would do to encourage a child learning to cook. These are married adults, so it stands out as odd, to me.

      Delete
    3. Respectfully disagree. If I complimented my husband on how he cracked eggs, he would find that disingenuous. How honest and serious would that be? Save the true compliments for true successes. Unless, of course, she was sort of tongue-in-cheek; then it's just fun in a marriage. 'I love how you crack eggs, Babe!' haha.

      Delete
    4. Agreed! Compliments about something as simple as eggs.. precious encouragement in all areas.

      Delete
    5. I think my husband would think I was being sarcastic if I congratulated him for cracking eggs lol!

      Delete
    6. Maybe she has some family members who are bad at cracking eggs. I know I do lol

      Delete
    7. Oh good grief.

      Delete
    8. The rabbit trails these comments go on!

      Delete
    9. Sarcasm, exactly where my mind would go to as well. Maybe Joe & Kendra don't have sarcastic humor-type personalities. Who knows.

  20. Those look yummy. What an adorable couple!

  21. They seem like fine people! I sincerely hope they do not follow in the footsteps of the rest of the Duggars and can find a life for themselves out of the public eye. I do not think it healthy to place yourself or family under scrutiny, no matter how good the money may be.

  22. I don't get why this family can't just be themselves. It's (more often than not) just staged content like this. What do cookies to do with who Joe & Kendra are? That's what fans are really interested in. Food Network already exists for basic cooking content.

    1. Then please contact every single person on YouTube and ask them to take their cooking videos down because Food Network already exists.

  23. I love baking cookies, but no one wants oatmeal cookies at my house. My family likes chocolate chip cookies and snickerdoodles. I enjoyed watching Joseph and Kendra baking cookies together, they are a sweet couple and they look so happy...Jane

  25. Sorry, but those cookies bakes too quick at too hot of a temp. See how they’re very dark brown (almost burnt) at the edges, but very light on the inside? They need to reduce the temp to about 325° and let them in there a little longer. But I’ve had over 20 years of baking. They’re just learning. I hope she invests in some good cookbooks and doesn’t rely on her in-laws strange concoctions.

    1. 12:36 - That's what I noticed, too. That's a heavy dough that doesn't need a hot oven to make the cookies rise quickly. Most cookie recipes I have call for 350.

It also looks like they put the cookie sheet in the oven on a rack that's too low. I always use the middle rack, or the upper of two racks. If cookies are apt to brown on the bottom first, I put another cookie sheet under the baking sheet to deflect the bottom heat.

Over 55 years of cookie baking experience for me, with recipes I've developed and Christmas cookies that people start asking me for in the summer. I can turn out a pretty cookie.

    2. They don’t think their husbands are super beings. They are just in love. I hope you looked at your spouse that way when you first fell in love. It is perfectly normal to be crazy about the person you are about to marry or have just married. I worry about the people who don’t look like they are in love. There would be a lot less marital problems if husbands and wives focused on each other and not themselves and concentrated on the good traits they see in each other and not the negative. I hate to see a spouse tear down their mate. The world will do that enough. We need to lift each other up. Home should always be a safe place with no name calling and where people know they are loved.
