'Joy and Austin Tie the Knot' Recap

Counting On "Joy and Austin Tie the Knot"
  • Four days before Joy and Austin’s wedding, the Duggars excitedly head to the airport to meet the Dillards as they return from Central America.
  • Later that week, dress designer Renee Miller arrives for the final fitting of Joy’s gown. Joy is radiant as she walks out in her wedding dress. “It just blows me away how she got the things that I was…wanting,” says the bride-to-be.
  • Later, Joseph drives over to the Caldwell home to pick Kendra and her sister Lauren up for an evening at Jessa and Ben’s. Joseph and Kendra have been courting for two-and-a-half months, but they have known each other for five or six years.
  • “With them being on the fast track, I…definitely have already cried quite a bit,” says Lauren. “…Kendra and I have always been best friends. But I’m super excited for them.”
  • The cameras stop by Joy and Austin’s future home. It’s nowhere near done, so the family has allowed them to move one of their RVs next to the house while they finish construction.
  • Leading up to the wedding, Joseph meets with Pastor Paul Caldwell to ask his blessing to propose to Kendra at Joy and Austin’s wedding. Pastor Caldwell says yes and tells Joseph how grateful he and his wife, Christina, are that Joseph has honored them throughout the relationship.
  • “We’re very happy for Joe and Kendra,” says Paul. “A little bit taken aback that it happened so quick and so early, but we want them to get on with their life.”
  • Joy and Austin happily give Joseph permission to propose at the wedding. “We’re all one big, happy family, anyways,” says Austin.
  • Some of the “middle” siblings head over to the home of Cindy, Michelle’s childhood friend and the wedding designer, to start working on decorations. They load everything into a big truck, but they run out of gas along the way, so that causes a delay.
  • The day before the wedding, Jinger and Jeremy arrive from Laredo with the pottery for the rehearsal dinner.
  • Now that all the girls are together, they present Joy and Austin with the “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” gift that most of the siblings have contributed to.
  • At the church, family and close friends begin to arrive for the rehearsal and Mexican-themed rehearsal dinner. Jill (maid of honor) and Bobby (best man and Austin’s brother-in-law) both make speeches. Bobby, who attended Christian school, says that he always joked with Austin because he was homeschooled.
  • On the big day, the bride and the groom arrive at the church separately, reunite in the foyer, and then split up again to get ready for the ceremony. After doing her hair and makeup but before putting on her dress, Joy finds Austin to ask him what he thinks about her hair.
  • Joy puts her dress on and then unveils it to her mom and bridesmaids. Jim Bob comes into the room, and both he and Joy tear up. "This is our fifth child to get married, and I don't think it gets easier, but she's marrying Austin, who is just a great guy," says Jim Bob.
  • Joy and Austin have their first look in the sanctuary. "I think we decided to do the first look probably because I would have lost it as I saw her walking down the aisle," says Austin.
  • This is Jennifer's first time being a bridesmaid. She is Joy's little buddy and is sad that her sister is moving out.
  • Just before the ceremony, the groomsmen pray over Austin. As the bridesmaids line up, Jennifer starts crying. Michelle and Joy hold her and speak words of encouragement.
  • Austin escorts his mom and mother-in-law into the sanctuary. When Jim Bob and Joy enter the room, Austin starts crying. "I wasn't surprised that he did, cause he's pretty emotional" says Joy.
  • After reading their vows, Joy and Austin sign them, as well as the marriage license. Their parents come onto the stage to pray for them.
  • Joy and Austin share their first kiss before Pastor Caldwell introduces them as husband and wife. Austin asks Joy if she wants him to carry her out of the church, and she says no. As they exit, confetti cannons are set off.
  • "It was just a beautiful wedding," says Austin's mom. "It couldn't have been better."
  • At the reception, Joy and Austin thank everyone, and Joy mentions that they won't be able to "stay super long." The couple cuts their six-tiered cake.
  • All the single ladies gather for the bouquet toss, and Joseph's nerves start to build. Joy pretends to toss the bouquet but then walks it back to Kendra. Joe walks out and gets down on one knee. Kendra says yes. "When Joe got down on one knee...I was shocked," says Kendra. "It felt like the whole world stopped for a second."
  • "Well, another one bites the dust," says Josiah. "Way to man up, Joe."
  • Joy changes into a regular outfit before she and Austin run out to their getaway car. They will honeymoon in Switzerland, and Joy says she is looking forward to skiing.
Next week's episode, featuring Joseph and Kendra's wedding, will be the season finale.

  1. I am excited about seeing joy and Austin on season 7 on counting on. I wish it was here. But I HAVE to wait. Joy and Austin are my favorite people to watch. I love watching them. Before I would just watch counting on a little bit. I member seeing the first episode about a year ago and then I stopped watching it and then I kept going back-and-forth watching it and not watching it. And then once I saw that join our wedding is going to come up I started to watch it again and I fell in love with it. I hope that the baby is a boy. I think it's going to be a boy but we don't know before I would just watch counting on a little bit. 4. You know... Austin is right about the word "epic"

  5. I liked that they signed their vows too.
And the way Joe proposed was great!
Kendra did not expect it at all!!!
Besides Josh's proposal, it's the only proposal done in which the girl didn't suspect anything.

  6. Is it just me......or did it feel very one sided that everyone came to the airport, and made a HUGE deal for Jill and Derrick coming home, but yet NO ONE could show up to meet Jinger and Jeremy?!?! I found it quite rude.

    1. Not that I'm defending their missioncations, but I think I'd book a flight a few days in advance if I had to travel that far. If one flight leg gets canceled and you need to get home by the next day, you're up the creek.

    2. That the Duggars made such a big deal of Derek and Jill but nothing for Jeremy and Jinger. Can anyone think of why that is? I wonder if TLC did it for Jill since they had that kind of reunion for them before. Nonetheless, it was too apparent.

      Delete
    3. No, I didn't think that was rude. I don't know why no one met J&J at the airport, but I'm sure it wasn't an intentional slap in the face. That's just silly. Isn't it possible that everyone was busy with wedding prep if they got there the day before a large wedding? Also, it's ludicrous to say that Jill and Derick "make everything about themselves." You think they forced their family to make welcome signs and meet them at the airport and look all excited? Please.

    4. Jinger and Jeremy travel to the Duggars frequently and seems they had an agenda when they got off the plane. Jill and Derrick were returning from months out of the country....a bit different. Everyone was busy working on the wedding.

      Delete
    5. Jill and Derrick had been gone much longer than Jinger and Jeremy, so that could be why.

    6. Anon 1:21, I think you are being presumptuous, and making a deal out of nothing.

  8. The most endearing moment of the episode was Joy and Austin's first look at each other.

    1. Looked like they did it to get the photos over with so they could skedaddle faster after the ceremony. So in every photo we saw of them together in People magazine (which were the shots shown last night), they weren't married yet.

    2. Oh big deal! It was their wedding day. Don't be so closed-minded.

      Delete
    3. They sold their wedding pictures to People Magazine too? Unbelievable

      Delete
    4. Celebrities manage their photos by contracting for their release. Why shouldn’t they be paid?

      Delete
  9. Did you see a heavily pregnant Anna ironing shirts in the men's dressing room? It was her red checked shirt visible from the back. Those men should have been capable of using an iron themselves. Irons don't have genders assigned to them. All those men in the room and not one gentleman among them to relieve Anna of that job?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Maybe she volunteered?

      Delete
    2. Anna did have another 3.5 months to go in her pregnancy, so she wasn't really "heavily" pregnant.

      Delete
    3. My husband's mother told him in high school that if he wanted to wear a nicely pressed shirt on a date, there was the ironing board and the iron. Consequently I have a husband who does things like that for himself. Thank you, MIL. And her grandsons know how to iron, too, and own the proper equipment.

      Delete
    4. Being pregnant doesn't mean you can't do anything. When I was pregnant and people wouldn't let me do anything it drove me nuts! Especially since it was stuff I knew I could and not worry about the baby, plus i worked up tok the day I went into labor. If a woman can and wants too do a task or whatever during her pregnancy then she should with out judgement and yes I know all pregnancies are not a like even in the same woman. Anna knows her body during pregnancy by then and knew what she could and could not handle.

      Delete
    5. I’m sorry, pregnancy doesn’t equal disability and I’m pretty sure no one forced her. Yes men are capable of doing the ironing. No nothing wrong with women doing it for them. Of all the things to comment on.

I went to work on Tuesday, and delivered my first on a Wednesday

      Delete
    6. It's not about whether or not you can do something while pregnant. It's about other people respecting you, your baby, and your physical condition, and treating you kindly. Just like you can open your own car door or push in your own chair, but when someone else does it for you, it's lovely courtesy. Anna doesn't ever seem to get those courtesies. Go back and look at when they arrived at her parents' house at Mother's Day, and how nobody helped her out of the car, for starters.

      Delete
    7. Why do you assume that she was ironing because she's a lady? I think you're looking too hard for something to criticize. If you really care about Anna's feelings, don't write ugly things about her and her family on the internet.

      Delete
    8. Gee, I worked up to the day I checked into the hospital to have my baby. I didn't know ironing was so strenuous.

      Delete
    9. My objection is not that Anna is pregnant but that the men should do their own ironing. It's not like Anna wasn't needed anywhere else. She has little kiddos to corral.

      Delete
    10. I really liked the comment from 12:14 PM. Pregnant women shouldn't be treated as if they are fragile. They are strong! I think feminism means that you can do whatever you want. If you like to iron, then iron. If you like to fix cars, fix cars. Women are the worst at nitpicking each other.

      Delete
    11. 9:15 AM -- I'm the one who said I worked up to the day before delivery, but the more I think about it, you're right. I actually think that pregnant women should be treated differently, offered a seat, pampered, etc. Maybe someone else should have offered to do that ironing for her.

      Delete
    12. Having good manners and being nice to other people never goes out of style, whether someone is pregnant or not. I don't see a lot of that going on around any of the pregnant Duggar women.

      Delete
    13. @9:15 a.m. - You still don't get it. "Maybe someone else should have offered to do the ironing for her." No, not for her. It isn't her job in the first place. They're not her shirts!

  10. Spunky take-charge Joy turned to Jello when it came time to decide on a hair style for the wedding, and whether or not to wear a veil. That was painful, watching Joy and Austin volley "But what do YOU want?" back and forth. Bride Joy needs to learn which decisions you include your husband in, and which you make on your own. Hair and wardrobe definitely fall into the latter category.

    1. A bride does dress for her groom on the wedding day - especially when she has admitted she just wants to be married and the wedding itself is just a means to that end.

      Delete
    2. Dress for the groom? Most grooms couldn't care less what the bride wears. They all put on suits they're told to pick out, the bride comes in wearing something white, and then it's on to the reception, where you can relax. Ask any groom to describe his bride's gown, complete with style and materials. Then ask him what the veil was like. Go on...I'll wait...

      Delete
    3. I think that along with dresses, Joy tried on the role of meek, deferring wife during all these wedding arrangements. The cake, the dress, the veil, the hair... But that role didn't suit her, you could tell. Nor was she acting that way at the end of the show last night, after the wedding. She was all over Austin, wearing the pants in the family (so to speak) again.

    4. It was weird, I have to admit, and good/funny points, 11:52.

    5. That was very painful watching Joy in a panic looking for Austin to make a decision for her. I don't think these men are that self-controlling. In fact, Austin was trying to get Joy to decide. She needs to find her own self-confidence/self-esteem. It's ridiculous that she acts that way. Girl, if you are old enough to marry and give birth, you better pull it together

      Delete
    6. I didn't think it was painful to watch. Two heads are better than one and to Joy his opinion counted the most...Jane

    7. What would she do if she were widowed? My sister-in-law was widowed in her early 30's. These things happen. You can't always depend on a husband being there to make the decisions...

    8. And if she had not asked him, someone would have complained that she didn’t seek his opinion

    9. My husband was the one who wanted the dress and things. I am not that traditional. I guess it depends on the couple. We have been married since 1995 so whatever works😊

  11. What I love about Joy and Austin, is you can just see they really love each other. All through these last episodes, the act like they are really love. Also they seemed the best of friends. It was cute to see him kinda of play with her at the end. I pray that will put God first in everything, and he will take care of the details:)

  16. I think I am done with this blog, at least for a while, its like the show and only seems to have one topic at the moment, weddings, Joys wedding currently. TLC already have enough shows about wedding dress shopping. The show is so boring and now so is this blog, its not the admins fault, its all they have to work with. TLC either needs to do something to make it more interesting, or finish it.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I vote for finish it and bring us something WAY more interesting! Surely there are totally deserving and uplifting other families out there. Ones that more of us can relate to.

      Delete
    2. I understand Anon 1:51. It has become so repetitive that it is now just annoying. Networks are loaded with wedding shows and birth shows so no one needs another one. Ridiculous!

      Delete
    3. You are so right. Plus featuring the guys running out of gas. What do they think of the viewers that this is the kind of stuff they show?

      Delete
    4. Things TLC could have delved into this season: Why did Derick and Jill leave SOS? What happened with Samuel's birth? What is Jana doing with her life (other than decorating chicken coops)? Why did the family buy a bunch of used planes last spring? What does JD do all day? How far along has Ben gotten in his studies? What is he doing to earn a living for his family? What does Jinger do as the pastor's wife? Show us Jeremy's church and explain what part it plays in the community. Is he hoping to move on to a bigger church soon?

Exploring any or all of those topics this season would have made for much better viewing. There are so many significant issues that are never addressed on the show. We only get to see coffee, thrift stores, and party planning. Oh, and those goofy "Hold up your (paddle, shoe, white board) when you can answer this silly question about someone else" segments. Please, TLC. My IQ is falling like the autumn leaves from watching this show in its current format.

    5. THANK YOU, anon 9:08. You are so right. This family has so many interesting facets to it, but they share next to none of it. If all they want to share is weddings, fine. In that case, it makes more sense to have a special once a year.

      Delete
  17. Why would a woman be allowed in the mens' dressing room in the first place? Yes, they should have been able to iron their own shirts....at home before they left for the church. Why is it customary in some churches to dress at the church? We dress for the wedding at home and arrive already DRESSED and ready to start the ceremony. Easier that way. Everything is at home and it's at your disposal for hair, makeup, etc.

    1. They spent the entire day @ the church, as they have done all along. I think the guys went off to a bathroom to actually change clothes, but yes, I thought it was strange that their other room was co-ed. I didn't see guys in the bride's/bridesmaids' room!

    3. It's not uncommon to get dressed/prepared at the wedding venue. That way your hair/makeup is fresh and your dress/suit doesen't get wrinkled in the car ride over.

  18. Poor Jennifer. It broke my heart to see her so sad. Life will be so different now that all of thier Buddy team leaders except Jana are out of the house. Can't imagine what the younger girls are feeling. They always seem to cling to thier older sisters and not thier mother ☹️

    1. It broke my heart to see nobody hug her but Joy. Michelle just rubbed her shoulder.

    2. I felt very bad for Jennifer-she's clearly a very sensitive young lady (not a bad thing) and was distraught at several points throughout the whole process (both dress shopping and at several points before and during the wedding). I also noticed in several instances that the younger girls cling to and rely on their older buddy more so than their mom. It's sad that they've bonded more fully to their buddy than their mom. Their older buddy was/is bound to grow up, marry, and move out at some point (I expect Jana will eventually too) and start a family of their own. A mom is supposed to be a foundational part of the home precisely because she doesn't grow up, date/court (having less time for the children), and leave (death aside, of course). She's supposed to be a steady support childhood through adulthood, as her children's needs change from parent to adviser to friend and adviser. The older buddies know the younger girls better than Michelle does. That's sad.

      Delete
    3. 7:19- Yes, it is sad. However, it comes as no surprise when there's that many children in a family. There's only so much time in the day or week to give undivided attention to each one.

      Delete
    4. You are all basing your judgements on 40 -45 minute clips of their lives. You are seeing snapshots not 24-7 video so you have no idea what the relationships are. It seems quite appropriate that since the focus was Joy buying her dress and at the ceremony that Jennifer's reaction would be included. There is so much we don't see so stop speculating and judging.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous @7:04- I'm the Anonymous @7:19 and I wasn't judging-just an insightful post. Because of dysfunction in my husband's family, the children were more bonded to each other than their mother. As our wedding day approached, his little brother earnestly pleaded for us to just get married and move into my husband's bedroom in the house. It was heartbreaking to try to explain to him that that wasn't possible. We made it a point to make him a groomsman and also to set aside a weekend each month for him to sleepover, with all his favorite foods, and the activity of his choosing. We've been married 26 years and he and my husband are still closer to each other than either parent. Jennifer was distraught, not just "going to miss Joy". I know what that looks like.

    6. Speaking from my own experience of being raised in a large family, the older siblings really do a lot of the raising of the younger ones just by virtue of the parents being very busy with having so many children. In my family of 10 children, the younger ones were more attached to us older ones than to our parents. It is sad but that is how it was. It's one of the disadvantages of parents choosing to have that many children. And, in the case of the Duggars, the parents have been very intentional about teaching their older children how to parent, etc. long before they have children of their own. My parents didn't set out with that as their goal but it happened because of the situation. Yes, I was an "adult child" and many times wished it hadn't been that way.

  19. That is so true 9:31 that the girls tend to gravitate to their older sisters. I remember how sad I was when my older sister got married and left our house. I know Joy will include Jennifer as much as possible. Joy had a good mentor. Jill included her buddy group in lots of activities, including going to the midwife with her, even after she was married.
