Recap: "Duggar Dirty Jobs" and "Duggars Decorate & Diet"

Tonight on TLC...

19 Kids and Counting "Duggar Dirty Jobs"
  • Jill and Derick, accompanied by chaperone Michelle, purchase wedding bands at White's Jewelry, the same jeweler Jim Bob and Michelle visited 30 years ago while preparing for their wedding.
  • Ben Seewald recently became the first single, non-Duggar male to live on the Duggars' property. He and Jessa have purposed never to be alone together. "...Ben realizes the responsibility before God and before Jessa's daddy to not make any mistakes" says Michelle.
  • According to Jessa, one downside of living so close to Ben is that she always has to look her best.
  • "If you want to marry a Duggar girl, you can't be afraid to get your hands dirty," says Jim Bob, who sends Ben out to work with John-David. Their first task is to fix a fence, but after determining that they don't have the right supplies to complete the job, John and Ben decide to grab a box of donuts.
  • Next, the men install windows. "I haven't done a whole lot of carpentry work before," says Ben. "Measuring tapes and Ben, well, we aren't the best of friends.
  • When Jessa says it would be nice to have a handy husband, Ben responds that that is not an "absolute necessity" and that "some guys just might have strengths in other areas."
  • The last item on Ben's to-do list is to bathroom cleaning. John says part of the reason his dad invited Ben to move onto the family's property is because he wants to prepare Jessa's boyfriend to support a wife and family.
  • Meanwhile, Grandma, Michelle, and Joy take the younger kids to Imagine Studios to paint pottery as wedding gifts for Jill and Derick.
  • "I'm excited for Jill and Derick to get married..." says Jackson. "...cause they've never gotten married before," adds Johannah.
  • Joy says it's bittersweet to watch Jill prepare to move out, since the two sisters were buddies and slept in the same bed for many years.
19 Kids and Counting "Duggars Decorate & Diet"
  • Michelle, Jessa, and Joy take on the task of reupholstering stools. The Duggar mom says she doesn't think it's likely that any of her kids will have more than 19 children but that it isn't entirely impossible.
  • While enjoying a homemade, Southern breakfast of biscuits and gravy, bacon, eggs, and sausage at their home in Washington D.C., Josh and Anna are shocked to welcome an unexpected visitor...former professional football player Steve Conley! About a year ago, Steve put Jim Bob and Josh through an intense physical training regimen.
  • "The good think about this breakfast is that it's so full of preservatives that it will keep you around for a long time" jokes Anna, who says she usually prepares healthier foods.
  • "I think with moving, I've kind of slacked back into my old ways," says Josh.
  • When Steve looks through Josh and Anna's pantry and fridge and discovers a lack of healthy options, he takes them to a local farmer's market to stock up on fresh fruits and veggies.
  • At the market, Steve turns shopping into a game for Mackynzie and Michael, as he sends them to find foods that match certain descriptions.
  • Back in Arkansas, Jinger snaps engagement photos of Jill and Derick. Jessa comes along as the wardrobe coordinator and photographer's assistant.
  • Jill and Derick say that saving the physical side of their relationship for marriage gives them incentive to have a short engagement.
  • Jim Bob supervises the younger and middle-aged kids while they paint the soap box derby cars they built during last week's show.

  1. I noticed Michelle and Jim are aggressively hinting that the girls that are marrying live near them. I have to remind the parents that the girls "Leave and cleave to their husbands" the girls follow their husbands where they the men go not the other way around !!!!

  2. No one should ever clean a bsthroom without wearing some type of protective gloves! Washing your hands afterwards isn't enough! That was disgusting and unnecessarily ignorant!

  3. Loved the shows tonight! Especially the toilet cleaning segment, hehe. Jinger did a great job on the engagement photos and being helped by Jessa. I thought the nicest car was the very colorful handprint one. That's a keeper for sure! Looking forward to next week's episode!

  4. I am a little disappointed in how the show is displaying Ben,,, Ben does not know how to do carpendtry work,,, why isn't Jim Bob or John David staying with him and showing him,, I know Jim Bob showed his sons. It is making Ben out to be dense.. not fair to him,, I expected better out of Jim Bob.

  5. Jim Bob isn't the only one who can teach a man how to support a wife..i think Bens parents did a good enough job of that without Ben needing to move closer, if he wanted to move for other reasons (which i think is so:)) thats different but Jim Bob doesnt need to take the place of his own father.....that statement probably made Bens parents feel bad. maybe it was just said without much thought.

  7. Don't you think it would be apropriate to add Ben to the pictures up above...After all they are about to get married?

  8. I thought TLC dropped the ball on these episodes, this was the first time in a while that i was bored with these two shows.I love this family, I'm sure with all those children they could find more interesting storylines.Where is Josiah? Does he not want to be filmed or was he away at the Alert academy while they filmed this?

  9. Im really worried about Josh, he had enough food on his plate for three people. He needs to be around to raise his kids. Also, not all men are uber skilled handymen like JohnDavid, nor should JimB expect him to be.I mean poor Ben couldnt even use a tape measure properly. I think he needs to lessen his expectations on Ben becoming Mr. fix it.How come Derick has not been put to the handyman test? It was funny how Ben and JohnD gave up and got donuts.

  10. I admire the Duggar family...enjoying watching and learning from all of them. My God Bless and look after your family always.

  11. Joy ready to take over with the little ones?

  12. Jessa Duggar certainly seems a bit overly concerned about outward appearances and looks....gee I though their christian values guided them a little better. I'd be a bit concerned about getting married if my main concern about spending more time with my fiancee meant looking good every day...really?

    1. It's our culture. Looks do matter! Besides looking pretty can boost your confidence. Looking frumpy can look like you don't care about yourself. That can really hurt a person's self esteem. I don't think Jessa is self centered I really think she just wants to look the best she can, not a thing wrong with that!

  13. Please tell me the show is NOT being cancelled. I love this family and would like to be just like them.

  14. Jill and joy shared a bed!!?? Why? They defiantly have enough money for more beds and every time you their rooms they look like twin beds. I always wondered why there is always kids sleeping on the floor. Their family has grown since they built that house. I know they all want to be together but that doesn't mean some have to sleep on the floor because of it. They should have 2 girl rooms and 2 boys rooms. older girl/boy and younger girl/boy. Their girls are adults now. Give them space since their not allowed to go anywhere until they are married. It is not good to sleep on the floor all the time anyway.

    1. Umm reality check their not allowed to go anywhere before their married??? Plz I don't mean to b ugly but just TAke a trip down memory lane or else watch the show for the facts..... To name a few they've go a dozens of times to El Salvador on mission trips. The boys go to the alert academy in TX Jana went to journey to the heart in michigan by herself I could go on but that's to name a few ans also all the duggar a have beds to sleep in when u c them on the floor that's usually the lil ones n it's nap time. Or else gettin ready to go somewhere. As far as joy and Jill sharing a bed I slept I'm the same bed a my sister before even tho we had r own bed!! They may have wanted too also u can't Jude their budget if u had nineteen u may end up doubling a few up!!!!

  15. Josh and Anna's kids are so cute! But you cannot understand them when they talk. Therefore all the subtitles. I've noticed with some kids of moms I know, who talk extra sweet and almost babyish that they tend to talk this way. How about just speaking normal to your kids? Obviously I have different conversations with my kids than I do with my friends or family but I still speak to them with the same normal tone of voice. Just a thought.

  16. I have really enjoyed watching the show and seeing how the girls are dealing with their relationships and getting ready to move onto to their new lives. You have raised an awesome family and have a lot to be proud of. God Bless you all!!

  17. Off topic but did the show reveal yet what the change is for Josh and Anna's family?

    1. Good question, I was wondering the same thing.

  18. Seems like the Duggar family struggles with weight issues, quite a few of them. They don't seem to eat the healthiest meals. I don't get why Anna stocked her pantry with unhealthy food after that episode with the doctor?

    ReplyDelete

    1. EXACTLY! I dont think they take his unhealthy lifestyle seriously or his trainer for that matter. These young folks think they are invincible and that they have time, well that couldnt be further from the truth. What he does now will inevitably shorten his life, and I'm sure his future large family will need him.I really hope they see the light of day because all the prayers in the world are not going to protect u from poor health.Bless them:-)

  19. I did love this show but when I. Seen john say that Ben didn't get the right tools why didn't john just ask from the start what tools do you have? And the take him to clean bathrooms without any gloves if he was my son I would tell him to come home. My point here is don't degraded someone.

  20. So excited to see the family experiencing happy moments and new journeys. You have been missed and love seeing the love of your family for each other.

  21. Ben life was put in danger by cleaning a toilet with no gloves on.If i were his parents i wouldnt be to thrilled, Ben should have kown better and demanded gloves. That was my least favorite episode to date. I think some of us fans could do better than TLC does sometimes. They should ask us for some ideas, im sure we have some good ones.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Why is everyone making such a big deal about the gloves. I clean toilets all the time without gloves. I know it's kind gross but in all reality if you're worried, wash your hands and use hand sanitizer or do whatever it takes to get your hands clean again.

      Delete
  22. I was disappointed with the way they treat Ben. Making him clean toilets with his bare Hands, leaving him alone with a carpentry job he does not know how to do...What is he supposed to learn from that?
It also shows a lack of respect for Ben's family if the Duggars assume that Ben has not been taught how to support a wife and family.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I felt that this show made a fool out of Ben. Teaching him is one thing, setting him up to fail and look foolish is so not the Christian thing to do. I realize that we only see glimpses of the show, but if this is how I was treated, I would turn and run.

    ReplyDelete
  24. What happened to John David? He used to be such a sweet guy, but now he's always so cynical and I felt he was being quite rude to Ben. Ben is such a great guy, I don't understand why the older boys are so harsh on him but not to Derick (who was also great).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good observations on Ben and Derick. I think the difference is is that Derick is older, more experienced in life, holds a professional level job, and is more mature than Ben and the older Duggar boys. Derick has nothing to prove to the boys and he commands respect in his quiet way. He's already a man whereas Ben is not quite there yet. Give him 5 more years to get to Derick's level and I'm sure he'll be fine.

  25. A fun suggestion for Jinger when/if she starts her own photography company would be for her to name her business "Jinger Snaps". Corny but cute. Lol.

  26. For Jessa, I can see the constant effort of always looking best. However, it would be a good thing for him to see her not wear makeup all the time, her hair simply put in a pony tail, neglect to wear shoes if she has to, or have stains on her house clothes from regular household tasks. He would learn to love her for who she is, in all phases of the day. I remember one of our courtship "dates"...it was cleaning out a rental home along with my mother. My future hubby saw me scrubbing out a grungy oven, a cleaning out a stinky bathroom. I saw how he was after a list of yard tasks and gutter cleaning... then we all went out to lunch... as is.

    ReplyDelete
  27. What exactly did Jessa mean when she was telling Ben what she liked in a man? She has to wait to get the full story on that point.

  28. The way TLC is doing the shows makes me feel nutsy. I am on edge trying to figure out if this moment is the actual portion of the show the have been giving so many brief little previews of or if this is another brief little preview. Added to that they put fast tempo banjo music, aahhh, I might have to lay off the caffeine and get a prescription for tranquillizers just to stay calm when I watch now. The slower pace of this wholesome family was what I used to like about the show. They do not need to jazz it up with anticipatory scenes and fast music. Also are the producers encouraging innuendo from the older children now? That would be typical of television producers.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Disagree with # 8 on the sleeping arrangements. I think the little girls would not have it any other way, they would miss so much time with their sisters. Plus role models are a good way to learn. Now the girls know all about growing up Duggar.

  30. So enjoyed these two new episodes. I love Josh and Anna and their family and those two are wonderful parents. I thought it was terrific the way Steve Conly took the family to the farmer's market and sent the children on a veggies quest.. He really made it fun for the children. I seriously hope that those enormous quantities of food Josh and Anna piled onto their plates was a television joke and not an example of what they eat even when they are indulging. I just don't understand how our dearest Anna could possibly think she needed to bake two tubes of large biscuits for their little family. I hope that she was cooking for the crew also. But watching this made me wonder if it is harder to cook reasonable portions when you grow up in a big family and you are used to cooking for a crowd. I am so glad Steve showed up and I hope it encourages Anna to expand her culinary repertoire. This is a perfect time for them to make some changes while their children are young and open to healthy habits. I really hope Josh will start taking better care of himself, he is still young and can change his habits. They are a beautiful young couple and I want them to enjoy a healthy and fruitful future and be blessed with every good thing God desires for them.

  31. TLC gets all of the credit for making a comic relief episode. They could have picked from other footage and made a film of complete expertise. We are all pawns in their playful hands! All in good fun I am sure!

  32. Anon. 14 spoke about Ben being degraded by Jon, I agree, I don't think it is right to make him the butt of your jokes, it's not nice. I really hope Ben will finish his education because I think it will help him with gainful employment in the future. He may gain the girl of his dreams, but I am sure he does not want to work for Jim Bob long term. I am concerned that Ben's education will get lost in the Duggar shuffle.

  33. To Alexe, who asked why people call their religion a cult: It is a way of undermining the Judeo-Christian values that the Duggars hold, and on which the country was founded, in order to implement the agendas of those who want to change our society into one with no values or judgments. Changing the society this way - or trying to - was the only way they could get people to accept things like gay marriage, for example. The Duggars are a direct threat to this agenda, which is why they will go to any lengths to discredit them, such as calling them a 'cult'.

  34. I have mixed feelings about these episodes. First I loved seeing Josh and Anna and the kids. I also liked that Jill and Derrick bought their wedding bands at the same place as Jim Bob and Michelle. That was sweet. Watching Ben clean dirty toilets with no gloves was gross.

I'm confused about side hugging and hand holding. The side hugging seems less modest than hand holding to me. Can someone explain?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think they allow side hugs becuz hand holding is more intimate and special for couples , u couldnt just hold anybody's hand that would be weired whereas giving a friend/relative or even just an aquaintance a side hug wouldn't be weired...

  35. I thought Joy and Jill had separate beds, when they moved into the big house? They had like 5 beds with their names on. Maybe they were sleeping in the same bed when Joy was still little? When they had just a 3-bedroom house?

  37. I missed my favorite Duggar girl Jana on the episodes this past week. TLC should have been following Jana or her brothers instead of Ben cleaning toilets. Oh that's right, he needs to be filmed to earn money. TLC's not fooling this viewer. That episode was a snooze fest.

  38. I agree that Ben was not treated respectfully nor was he supplied the tools he needed for the jobs at hand. Further Jill and Derick deserved some privacy at the jewelry store to dicuss their rings between the two of them as they are adults.

  44. Ben is an adult and he is responsible enough to get a donut when he is hungry. He can also run for his other needs. In a house of over 20 he'd better not wait for everyone to show him and do for him when he is already almost 20, they have real little ones there to take care of there.

  46. Dear JimBob and Michelle, Thank you for raising Godly children that strive to please Him. I have so enjoyed seeing your children grow into God fearing young men and women. Your girls are truly Proverbs 31 women. I can't wait to see the upcoming weddings, all of them! God Bless You!

  47. Why is it we always see Ben getting put to work, and getting picked on but we never once see Derrick? I just don't think thats fair. Whats going to happen when Jessa and Ben get married do they get a big house to live in like Jill and Derrick? I also felt like Jill and Derrick moved fast with getting married, they haven't been together as long as Jessa and Ben, and they just got engaged! talk about moving fast!... Jessa and Ben are my favourite couple.

  48. I feel like there is a little jealousy in some of these comments. If you don't have something nice to say don't say it. Lovely family! Great show! End of story.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think Michelle and Jim Bob have to trust their adult children and let them make their own decisions. I came from a Christian family and no one CHAPERONED our dates. We could hug or share a simple kiss, and we turned out alright -- 48 years and 4 kids together! I have always wondered...as parents aren't they "spread a little thin" in giving proper attention to each child? And why do the older girls do so much of the housework and child care? Michelle birthed all these babies herself!

    ReplyDelete
  50. To comment on Jill and Joy sharing a bed....they were speaking about when they lived in the 3 bedroom house and did not have room for more beds. I agree about the comment stating "If you have noting nice to say, do not say anything at all!" I love the shows and I think that the world would be a better place if everyone lived their lives like the Duggars. My mother grew up with 11 siblings and she has also stated she would have enjoyed growing up in this family. A lot of love and the best parents in the world.
