'Joy Gets Engaged' Recap

Counting On "Joy Gets Engaged"
-->
  • The Dillards host Derick’s brother, sister-in-law, mom, and step-dad at the guesthouse before they return to Central America.
  • They give their keepsakes, their external hard drive, and Jill’s wedding ring (she only wears a band in Central America) to Derick’s mom to keep while they are away.
  • The next baby’s name will be Samuel Scott. Samuel, the last judge of Israel, means “one who hears from God.”
  • On another day, the girls come over to help Jill work through her to-do list. Derick has learned that long hair is viewed differently in Central America, so he has Jill cut his hair.
  • “I think at first, it might be a hard adjustment,” says Derick. Jill says she is sad about the haircut but that she also likes variability and change.
  • Down in Texas, Jinger is shopping for traditional Laredo items to send to her family back in Arkansas. She buys clothing jewelry, candy, snacks, noisemakers, hair bows, and children’s cowboy boots.
  • When the packages arrive at the Duggar home, Jim Bob and Michelle and the kids are thrilled. “As the months go by and Jinger is so far away, I definitely miss her even more,” says Jessa.
  • The family accompanies the Dillards to the airport to say goodbye. “There’s always that empty feeling in the house, even when just one sibling is missing,” says Jeremiah.
  • When the Dillards arrive in Central America, several of their friends are waiting to pick them up. It’s a very joyful reunion.
  • Austin has just sold his fifth flip house, and he is preparing to propose to Joy-Anna. Austin’s dad, Terry, and his close friend, Aaron, help him haul supplies up to a hilltop to set up a beautiful scene. They string lights and set out a table, chairs, and a campfire grill.
  • Meanwhile, Joy goes over to Jessa’s house to help with the kids. “Joy is great with kids, and she loves helping out with the babies,” says Jessa.
  • “Austin and I have talked about kids, and we both agree that we want as many as God wants us to have,” says Joy.
  • Later that afternoon, Joy, Johannah, and Jennifer meet up with Austin for a regular old horseback riding outing, or so Joy thinks. “When I’m around Joy, I feel complete,” says Austin. “She has a way of calming me down and making me feel right at home.”
  • After riding for a while, Austin suggests that they get off the horses and stretch their legs. He asks Johannah and Jennifer to run ahead. “Do you trust me?” Austin asks Joy. She says she does. He blindfolds her and leads her to the proposal spot. He gets down on one knee and has her take the blindfold off. “Joy-Anna Duggar, would you marry me?” he asks, smiling. “Yes,” she says gently. They hug and smile at each other. The diamond in the ring has been in Austin’s mom’s family for five generations.
  • Terry appears and gives both Joy and Austin a big hug. The newly engaged couple enjoys dinner cooked by Aaron.
  • Later, Joseph asks Pastor Caldwell’s permission to enter a courtship with his oldest daughter, Kendra. He admits he is nervous about the conversation. “I’m not going to stop what the Lord’s doing in your life,” says Pastor Caldwell, smiling. “You have my permission.” The two of them, as well as Kendra, have been talking and praying about entering a relationship for a while.

  1. I'm glad they are married and hope life is good.
I don't understand why they film but release details and pictures before showing and considerably after the fact.

  2. Long hair is viewed differently in CA? What about Americans running around in big vehicles with a film crew and armed guards? How is that viewed?

    1. Seems it would be so risky to have a celebrity couple being filmed in a very dangerous country. A hefty ransom could be asked.

    2. That's a good point

  3. So going by what Derick said about medical care being hard to get where they were going to be, Jill didn't get much if any OB doc care during pregnancy months 4-7. They were "hoping" that nothing went wrong...

    1. If that's true, that really is irresponsible and greatly disappointing as they have a public platform both with the show and as missionaries, with fans who clearly view them as role models.

    2. How do you know how much prenatal care she received? The few minutes of air time do not show every minute of the lives of a couple dozen people.

      Delete
    3. Derick said the medical care where they were was not good.

    4. Wow! Why so offeded? Either she got prenatal care the last few months in Central America or she did not- both can't be true. We know because Derick told the viewing audience so. Weren't you listening?

  4. "Harvested a deer" - Is that their euphemism for what they really did, kill it?

    1. Yes. That's what you do when you want to eat deer meat. Or a cow. Or a pig. Why critical over something so dumb.

      Delete
    2. Why couldn't they say kill, which is what they did?

      Delete
    3. Because to some the word "kill" is warped to automatically "kill for sport". To others it conjures up images of an animal suffering and languishing in the woods, left for dead. Harvesting is appropriate because the planned intention was to harvest the animal's meat for use in feeding oneself/others, in the same way crops are harvested. No complaint here.

  5. That blindfolding part was strange and unnecessary. They could have ridden their horses to that spot, gotten down, and he could have dropped to his knee. That would have taken her more by surprise than making her walk hundreds of yards over branches and through bushes, wearing a blindfold. That was just....weird. And then she was worried about her hair, instead of looking at what was happening?!

    1. I would never in a zillion years let someone blindfold me out in the woods like that. That's nuts.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I agree the blindfolding was unnecessary.

    3. Clearly she didn't understand what was happening for several seconds. And who are you to say how he should or shouldn't have proposed.

    4. How a guy chooses to propose is indicative of what sort of man he is.

    5. Anonymous July 12 at 11:02- Very good observation! I think Austin put both time and effort into his proposal and I think he may have been sending the message to Joy that he could provide for her more than just financially. I think he was also sharing with Joy how tied to the land he is, taking her to his favorite spot. I felt sorry for Joy that she was obviously cold during the meal portion, as the sun was setting and temps dropping. Although she was reportedly more tomboy growing up, she seemed to be growing into her more feminine side and might have preferred a more traditional romantic proposal that acknowledged that change. But whom am I to judge? I would hope Austin knows her better and how to honor her as a young lady. *Having grown up in the country and traipsed in the woods a lot, I wouldn't have liked the blindfolding-way too easy for him to stumble/slip no matter how well you know your property and jerk you along too! ;)

  6. it's so nice to see some of the other older kids, like joseph, talking more on camera! he's so quiet & shy and i couldnt be happier for him & kendra. cant wait to see more of their courtship & learn more about her

  7. I don't understand the appeal of "flip" houses. I would not buy a house that was remodeled or worked on by non-licensed contractors. With tile possibly set wrong by a starry-eyed girl and boy. I don't get it. Why would you want a house like that, even if it did manage to pass inspection? There's bound to be something unprofessional about it somewhere, that will cost you to fix later...

    1. Austin's father is a licensed contractor, so he been showing Austin the ropes. The majority of the work that is involved in flipping houses is mostly cosmetic work like new flooring and fixing walls.

      Delete
    2. Not true. We raised 4 kids in a flip house and it wasn't perfect.

      Delete
    3. I wonder the same thing. I see red flags when I hear a house has been "flipped." They are usually done in a hurry and on the cheap.

      Delete
    4. That's why you do an inspection before you purchase a property, check permits, etc.

      Delete
    5. OK, if you inspect a flipped house, check the permits of the people who did the work, and you find something amiss, then you don't buy it. So why do people even flip houses like that, if they run the risk of not being able to sell them again? Who are these flipped houses being marketed to? Someone who doesn't care what shape things are in? Why create houses for sale like that?

      Delete
    6. I've known so many people who had brought flip houses and had do so much renovating afterwords.

    7. My brother being a Contractor, he says it all depends on who's doing the work...but then again he's majorly critical when it comes to his job sites, his crew, and the subs (sub-contractors: plumbing, electrical, etc.). His name is on it, his business rep in the community is on the line, as well as how he feeds his family.

  8. No word on Jill. Is she okay?

  9. How is long hair on a man viewed in CA?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, Derick needs to explain that statement of his and enlighten us all about Central America and hair length. Otherwise, we are left in the dark, wondering.

      Delete
    2. It is common for gay men to have long hair in CA.

      Delete
    3. If that's so, then why did Derick wear his hair that length for so long?

      Delete
    4. He said why. Because he didn't know until the end of hs trip.

      Delete
    5. Wouldn't someone they're connected with in Central America or someone at S.O.S. have told him that far sooner (like when he first started letting it go)? On our mission trips we were pre-briefed on what was culturally offensive or questionable/unwise and reminded while we were there. Our hosting Pastor gave us "the lay of the land" upon our arrival and our leadership regularly impressed that upon us. Offended people are like citadels-no open doors, impregnable, and may hurl stones (best case:verbally discourage others from seeking to know about God, worst case: actually physically threaten the team's safety).

      Delete
    6. But they reslly aren't affiliated with any mission that could have briefed them. They are basically free lance missionaries.

  10. austin sounds like a women. waiting all his life. sorry but anything he says is totally stage and most people would not believe one word he even says. no seventeen year old boy thinks about marriage. you need to rethink that whole story line.

    1. I disagree. I absolutely love him and think he comes across as a neat man with a precious heart. Go watch Kate plus 8. You may enjoy that more.

    2. Just because you think something, from your point of view, particularly if it is negative and critical, don't presume that 'most people' think the same. You don't gain credibility for your opinion by claiming others think the same.

    3. LOL. Austin seems like a good godly young man. Unfortunately, people are used to men running out on their families or men who are not dedicated to a woman.

  11. I love Miss Cathy, she adores and misses her grandson's growing up dearly. Did you see how Israel just fell and melted into her arms at the airport? How endearing!

    1. I agree! She's a sweet lady.

    2. Yes, that joy on Israel's face was unmistakable. I've never seen any of the other Duggar grandchildren act so genuinely loving around their grandparents. Israel and Cathy must have formed a special bond somehow. Glad for it.

    3. He was sure happy to see his Grandma......Jane

    4. So sweet for both Israel and Cathy both!!! Coming from a large family, sometimes it's very hard to feel special, noticed, or individually loved when you're one of a really large number of grandchildren. It must be equally hard for the grandparents trying to develop special actual one-on-one relationships to individually know each grandchild. I don't mean maintaining notes on each child's likes/dislikes/interests/favorites and whipping them out for a visit/talk. I mean really knowing that child's heart, goals, dreams, fears, and hopes. Cathy seems to have that one-on-one connection that comes with investing lots of time into Israel. How precious! What a blessing to both!

  12. I think it's because Ms. Cathy has the TIME to bond with Israel.

  13. Question.. wasn't Samuel the last judge of Israel? I'm a Christian and I read my bible but I'm by no means a biblical scholar, so I'm just wanting to clarify! :)

  14. I really enjoyed watching Joy and Austin get engage again. It was sweeter than I recalled! I love his Dad's part and reaction. I, also, love how much Joy appreciated receiving a diamond that is a family heirloom from Austin's grandmother.
I'd love to hear more from Joy; her likes, dislikes and goals.
