Austin Asks Jim Bob's Blessing

"It's a lot to ask of a man to ask for his daughter's hand in marriage, and it's a huge responsibility for me to take on, and I don't take it lightly."
-Austin Forsyth
Coming up tonight on the two-hour Counting On special, Austin Forsyth gives future father-in-law Jim Bob Duggar, whom he calls Mr. Jim Bob, a tour of the house he has just finished renovating and is ready to sell. At age 17, Austin made a commitment to his dad that he would flip five houses before marriage, and this is his fifth house.

When the tour is over, 23-year-old Austin asks the Duggar dad for permission to propose to 19-year-old Joy-Anna Duggar. See Jim Bob's reaction in the video below. If you missed Saturday's promo video, in which the Duggar sisters ask Jinger Vuolo if she is pregnant, click here to watch it.

  1. Can't get the video to play. Did he really call wanting to marry Joy a "huge responsibility to take on"? How romantic...

    1. He wasn't referring to Joy being a huge responsibility. What an ignorant statement. He wasn't referring to taking care of a household and a family. And if your married, or maybe you can ask your dad- becoming the head of a household is a huge responsibility. Why read negative into his comments. HE wants to provide for her to the best of his ability and takes it seriously. Yes, it was very romantic.

    2. For a MAN like Austin, taking on a wife and starting a family IS a huge responsibility. And that's how any MAN should think of marriage and family.

    3. Anonymous 5:55 if he wasnt talking about taking care of a household and a family, what was he talking about?

    4. From the context, I think you can tell that 5:55 accidentally typed "wasn't" instead of "was" in the third sentence.

  2. What's so magical about flipping 5 houses? That number somehow makes you ready to marry? Marriage skills aren't the same as house flipping skills, I hope Austin knows.

    2. Really??? I was a goal he set! Did you not hear that

      Delete
    3. It's a goal. Driven people set goals for themselves. Also, flipping 5 houses would generate income to help with purchasing an engagement ring, supporting a family, etc.

      Delete
    4. Why not 6 houses or 7, or just 1 or 2? Five seemed like a pretty arbitrary number to set before being allowed to marry.

    5. I'm not a fan of these rushed marriages by any means BUT flipping ONE house is not an easy task. A lot of people give up and sell it as a fixer upper, the fact he did five because he knew that's what had to be done is commendable. It's also nice he's generating an income since aside from Jeremy Im not sure how the rest support themselves other than just riding the "Duggar brand".

  3. why why do this to us in Britain as we cannot see the show and now we have been blocked from seeing it on you tube as now they want us to pay extra to watch it and out banks won,t do it as they come up as a scam

    1. Try a you tube account 'butterscotch canoodle'. Episodes are always late (sometimes up to a week behind) and the sound is toned down (I assume to avoid copyright infringement) but it works. I'm in the UK too and it's the only way I can watch either. Good luck!

    1. I agree. A good relationship with her father is one of the greatest gift a girl can have. It affects the rest of her life.

  5. The young men who have married the Duggar girls so far seem to be quality young men. They are great examples for young men across the nation, and Jim Bob has done a fine job protecting his girls from becoming involved in the wrong relationships. They are a blessing to those of us who wish we had been raised in an environment like theirs, and we just live vicariously through them each week on Counting On...to God be the glory!

    1. After a 50 page "application" before getting to court a daughter, I would venture to say they're pretty well qualified to make it through to the next stage. They're almost hand-picked, in a way.

      Delete
    2. I wonder if Austin had to fill application, like the other son in laws .
Because Mr.JimBob has known him and his family
since he was a kid....AND I've wondered if Jeremy had to go
through the relationship and sex counciling
with Michelle and Jimbob , like the others did...😳
That is burned in my memory,,,,
      I hope they don't do that still....🙄

  6. They are already married. Seems out of order to feature old stuff.

  7. Looks like Austin has done a great job on that house!

  8. I have just come to love Austin - he is so mature especially in the Lord. May God bless him and Joy greatly. I am shocked about the clips of Jinger and Jeremy trying to learn Spanish in order to get around a city that is in America! Maybe they should think about offering to teach church members and others English instead of trying to learn Spanish. I would never go to another country and not learn the language or worst yet expect my native language to be accepted.

    1. It is crazy, isn't it. But Laredo is right on the border with Mexico, and Laredo's population is 96% Spanish!!!

      Delete
    2. Laredo is pretty much in Mexico. There were people speaking spanish in this area before there were people speaking English. Why should they lose their culture? I think it's great.

      Delete
    3. It's a lot easier to teach someone English when you can also speak their native language. Try being a little more open-minded.

      Delete
    4. I agree Betty. English is the first language and whereas I think it's great to learn another language, the Spanish speaking people should be learning and speaking English.

      Delete
    5. Betty, you are so right about the expectations of non-English people who come to live in America. It seems many of them want to merely transport their entire culture here and have it accepted. In my state, there are millions of dollars spent to provide ESL classes but many of the participants just go home and continue speaking their native language. If you want to live here, you need to learn to speak the language and then actually speak it!

    6. Betty, your remarks disturb me on a number of levels. It's unfair to think that someone would come to this country and immediately be able to speak its language. Do you realize the conditions some immigrants come from? How and when would they have been able to learn the language of the country to which they move? Have you ever tried studying another language to become fluent in it? It can take years! Plus what is wrong with speaking your native tongue, no matter where you are? It keeps your family history alive for you and your children. I'm not saying you never learn a new language, but the way you put it.....

I just had some work done on my house, and the (very skilled, very admirable) workmen spoke Spanish as their native language. I was delighted to be able to use the Spanish I learned in school to converse with them. And they were delighted to feel welcomed by my using their language. We had some great discussions about world issues, half in English and half in Spanish. They taught me a few new Spanish words, too, and helped me refresh my knowledge of verb tenses.

Please don't disparage other cultures or other languages. We're all one "culture" anyway, human beings, no matter what we grew up speaking or where we speak it.

    7. To be fair, there is no official language in the US, English is a default just because of who colonized. By learning the language they are better able to minister and reach out to those in need in their area. Which seems like the more important take away.

    8. I agree, and what a great idea about teaching English classes.

    9. By betty's logic, everyone in the US should be speaking some Native American language right now.

    10. "It seems many of them want to merely transport their entire culture here and have it accepted."

Oh my, what a statement. Have you ever studied the history of immigration in the US, and how the many cultures that came, and what they brought with them, shape our current culture? (Do you put up a Christmas tree? German & Victorian British tradition...)

      Delete
    11. I agree Anonymous @7:41 AM. The rudeness and ignorance displayed in comments like this one is appalling. The United States has no official language to speak of, and the insistence that English is what must be spoken completely erases the country's rich cultural history, including that of Native Americans, who were here long before the British. It's borderline racism.

      Delete
    12. I wonder how many people who were not born native American can speak their native language in America or even how many can communicate in ASL? America is a nation built on immigration/ colonisation, it is wonderful to be able to speak and communicate with others but does it have to be defined to American-English (there are many differences even between English spoken in Britain and English spoken in America. E.g. fawcet/tap, cleat/football boot, trunk/boot, hood/ bonnet, wrench/spanner)? Should not we all be trying to build links of communication with others, regardless of our ability to speak English? It can really make someone's day to try and communicate with them in their language if they are struggling with yours.

    13. Betty- Your post is quite harsh and unChristian. The U.S. has, and always will be, a melting pot and we do not legislate a primary language. My grandparents grew up in a primarily Norwegian community in Wisconsin and didn't learn to speak English until they went to school. At home, English was rarely spoken.
The Dillard's went to Central America without knowing Spanish, which was ridiculous if their goal was to be missionaries. The Vuolos live in a border town. It is no surprise that the language and culture will reflect its Mexican heritage.

    14. 7:26- My experience with teaching ESL students is that they learn English and then go home and teach what they've learned to their parents. They may also continue to use their native language, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with being bilingual. This is what happened with my sister-in-law.

  9. Love him! He may be my favorite son in law!

  10. I thought the Duggar 'students' were taught Spanish from Marjorie's mother. They had personal lessons. Why does Jinger NOT KNOW Spanish....and Jill too? I think they wasted Marjorie's mother's time.
I also agree that immigrants from ANY country need to LEARN OUR LANGUAGE. If not made to learn, they never will. Too much accommodation given to people bringing 20+ foreign languages with them. YES, give English lessons....and while you're at it, Jeremy, please take Catechism Lessons from the source and learn before you speak against something.

    2. How many people took Spanish in school and don't remember it? I took it in public school, and there is not way I would be able to converse with a Spanish speaking person. Being introduced to another language and having some basic understanding of it is what you learn in school. You have to take it more in depth to be able to converse.

    3. Didn't they say on the show that they had only taken a semester of Spanish?

    4. My 60-something next door neighbor always asks, whenever someone new moves in, "Are they our nationality?". One of these days I'm going to respond, "What's our nationality?".- I strongly suspect she actually means "white". >(

As I've taught English for years, I keep trying to explain to her that if it takes American school children 13 years to learn to read and correctly use English, how can you expect an immigrant to learn it instantly or even in 1-2 years?

  12. Betty the Vuolos learning spanish is about mutual respect. In order to be able to reach out to people and teach them english you need to be able to explain things to them in spanish. Jill and Derick live in a spanish speaking country and although they took classes they still don't speak the language, Derick preaches in english which isn't much use. I hope Jinger and Jeremy do better at learning spanish than the Dillards.
