Recap: At Home & Away

Jill & Jessa: Counting On "At Home & Away"
  • "Having my own little son, it's a really joyful thing," says Ben. The new dad says that fatherhood has brought him out of his comfort zone but that it has also been a huge blessing.
  • At four weeks old, Spurgeon has his first photo shoot, courtesy of Jinger, who has been interested in photography since around age 15.
  • Jinger takes Christmas-themed photos of Spurgeon and then snaps pictures of Jessa, Ben, and Spurgeon.
  • Jessa's sisters say it's weird to see Jessa as a mom and that sometimes she talks about things that make them feel awkward, such as her baby's bodily functions.
  • Anna, along with four-month-old Meredith, heads out on her first visit with Josh since he entered rehab. Last summer, when she found out that Josh had been unfaithful to her and that he had accounts on websites for those seeking to cheat on their spouses, Anna says she felt like her world had been shattered.
  • Josh and Anna decided together for Josh to enter a rehab facility. Anna says it has been good for the two of them to get help separately but that it has also been difficult to be apart.
  • "It's not anything I would have thought I would walk through," shares Anna. She says she is excited to see Josh but that it will also be very painful.
  • To prepare for a fall feast she is planning for her family, Jessa goes shopping with Jana, Jinger, and Joy. Although they have been married for one year, this is the first time Jessa and Ben will have Jessa's entire family over.
  • Jessa suggests store-bought rolls, pumpkin pies, and stuffing. "We cannot buy everything pre-made, guys," says Jinger. "We have to make it look like we know how to cook, even though we don't."
  • At the grocery store, the girls laugh that "family size" portions are never enough for the Duggars. They usually need five or six.
  • The gals stock up on butter for the feast. "My philosophy about butter is the more the better," says Jessa.
  • In Central America, Jill and Derick are adjusting to their new life on the mission field. Jill gives viewers a tour of their three-bedroom house, which has some modern conveniences but is also very sparse. After seeing a cougar in their neighborhood, the Dillards are being very conscientious about their safety.
  • On the day of the big fall feast, Jana, Jinger, Joy, and Johannah arrive early to help Jessa, who tries to impress her sisters by having the turkeys in the oven before they arrive. Jana rescues her by cutting slits in the roasting bags.
  • Johannah, who has recently been turning away from her tomboy ways and spending more time with her older sisters, makes the green bean casserole.
  • The family comes over and kicks off the feat by sharing what they are each thankful for. Joseph, who is in East Tennessee completing a one-year college program, and the Dillards join via videoconferencing.
  • Anna says she is thankful for Grandma Duggar and the example she has set of focusing on Christ during hard times.
  • "I just got back from visiting Joshua," Anna shares with the family. "And he loves each one of you guys very much and is just really grateful for a family that is willing to talk straight and to grieve when you have fallen but also to love and forgive and to have hope."
  • "This visit was great because it definitely gives a lot of hope," continues Anna. "But...the weight of everything is also there. Definitely, it drags me deeper to my faith. God's grace can give me the strength to love Josh when others would say that he doesn't deserve it."
  • John says that he still loves Josh and talks to him on a regular basis but that their relationship has changed.

  1. It's too bad TLC can't be more current on holidays, births, etc. They are shown months after the fact. Spent way too much time on reviewing things from prior shows and repeats.

  5. Hi I just finished watching an episode on TLC "counting on" I think it was and I was very moved by your family and I don't know how many of these comments you receive or if it makes a difference to your day but if it means anything there is a lot of hope and strength youre story as hard as it is to tell and to be as vulnerable as you can on Television. I guess my point is...thank you Anna and the duggar family for being so very brave to share your testimony even though the testimony isn't finished yet and a long road is still yet ahead. May God bless you all and continue to give you all the strength and wisdom needed for the days ahead. Be encouraged greater things ahead!

    2. I just hope they didn't all get Salmonella from the raw turkey on the counter around the other food, with hands everywhere. Even that thermometer should have been cleaned before being used again, when she tested the turkey and it wasn't done. Potential food poisoning is not funny or entertainment.

  13. Is "Fall Feast" what they call Thanksgiving? They went around and said what they were thankful for, so I assume so. I wonder why they don't say Thanksgiving like the rest of us. Does anyone know?

    1. It is Thanksgiving. I don't know why so many denominations re-name Holidays. The do it with St Valentine's Day too--call it Love Day. It's ridiculous. When my daughter was little she was in a Christian school that re-named St Patrick's Day to Green Day. Maybe it's their dislike of Catholics, although Thanksgiving isn't even a religious holiday. I don't know. By the way...Happy St Patrick's Day tomorrow🍀

    2. Staged to give the girls something to do together. Filmed who knows when. After Anna had been to IL. Weren't there actual Thanksgiving pictures posted from the Duggar house that day?

Interesting how TLC started out showing the girls carefully planning & shopping, then it all sort of fell apart into cooking trouble and Johanna hiding behind a chair sneaking whipped cream.

      Delete
    3. Why don't they call t Thanksgiving? They have done this before at Josh and Anna 's house. Those turkeys looked small and there was an awful lot of butter.

      Delete
    4. It was probably filmed some time other than Thanksgiving Day. Interesting to read that she never had the whole family over before. If TLC hadn't staged that "feast," she probably would never have done it. She didn't cook a meal like that for her family before, and she didn't seem too enthusiastic about doing it for the cameras, either. Would probably have preferred to give them all yogurt.

      Delete
    5. I guess I can understand the reasoning with some of these denominations not wanting to name a holiday after a Catholic saint (though I don't agree), but what's their reasoning regarding Thanksgiving?

  17. Poor Johannah. It hurts to read she isn't longer allowed to be Johannah but Jana.

    1. Ummm...what? I think you may have misread something. All it said was that she made the green bean casserole and that she'said less of a tomboy. That happens a lot as girls get older.

      Delete
    2. Jessa doesn't cook much yet so... would that make her Johanna? How silly.

      Delete
    3. Johannah is still Johannah. Sometimes they call her Hanny. But they never call her Jana...which is her older sister's name.

      Delete
    4. No, Jana is John David's twin. Johannah is nicknamed Hannie.

      Delete
    5. Was she the one hiding behind the chair, sneaking whipped cream? I hope you're not saying that she's in charge of younger kids now, too.

      Delete
    6. @Joy mitchem:
What I meant is that it' said: Johannah has been taken away from her tomboy ways. That makes me sad. Michelle always said she tries to see her children as individuals. So why isn't Johannah allowed to be tindividual and, well, tomboyish?

      Delete
    7. Actually it said she was "turning away from her tomboyish ways" which as I said before frequently hapens as girls grow up.

      Delete
    8. The "replies" to this post crack me up because so many readers just don't "get it.". What the original post is saying is that Johannah is being molded into a little lady like Jana instead of getting to be true to herself, whether that's a cooking and cleaning young woman or a fun-loving tomboy. Please let her grow up to be what she wants to be and not program her to someone else's expectations.

      Delete
    9. No one said she's not allowed to be a tomboy. They said she's been moving away from being a tomboy and has been spending more time with her older sisters. That sounds to me like the decision is completely Johannah's. No one is forcing anything. "Johannah, who has recently been turning away from her tomboy ways and spending more time with her older sisters, makes the green bean casserole."

    3. How many pounds of butter did she buy?

      Delete
    4. They had at least 6 lbs.? About that much was put in the cart at the store but the bags on the counter at home - hard to tell how much more from that one glance. She stuck it under the turkey skin (after stabbing at the skin with a butter knife) and they were going to use it for the mashed potatoes (one whole stick) and the rolls. Not sure what they did with the rest of the unused butter. Hopefully donated it to a food pantry.

  20. I'm so glad to see this beautiful family moving forward regardless of all that has happened. To watch them all unite and remain strong, supporting one another, including Josh, speaks clearly to their family value. We wouldn't banish a family member who was sick with a physical illness, we would gather around and do whatever was needed to help them get well, as this family is doing with Josh's mental illness. Stay strong Dugger family !

  24. It was nice to see the girls working together in this segment and also the rest of the family who were able to be there at the end of the program. I thought the year's past events and subsequent
comments by family members was handled well and with tact. My only critique is that I found watching 38 commercials over the course of 64 minutes was tedius and detracted from the overall enjoyment of the show.

  25. How could John David be in regular touch with Josh? Before that rehab place cleaned up their website & took down their detailed rules, it was evident that there would be no contact with family members at first (3 months?), and limited contact thereafter.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You went to their website and read the rules???

      Delete
    2. Their rules were all over the web at first. Everyone was saying how strange they were & how strict. The rules said what you could & couldn't say about the program or even the food there, when you had to get up & go to bed, what you were allowed to discuss while riding in the van, what you had to wear, what the girls were expected to bring with them for church clothes, how there would be no money & no phone calls, and so on. You can probably still find the rules if you search. They were eye-opening.

  27. I just finished watching the first episode of season 2 and I she'd tears along with the family. I have to say I am very proud of TLC for airing this program and allowing the Duggar family to show others that even Christians face adversity, but it's how people deal with these things that make them stronger and I believe that the Duggar will all be stronger in the Lord and closer to each other by facing this challenge head on and by television it TLC is allowing everyone to see that it can be done in a loving family way!! I also want to say how proud and amazed at Anna Duggar s reaction to the whole ordeal involving her husband Josh, she has risen above all of the insults hurled at her like David with Goliath, and she has beaten the giant wall of hatred and mistrust, she is the very perfect example of a loving wife and mother who has the love and the word of Christ in her whole being, for without Him she wouldn't be able to conquer this battle she's facing!! I applaud you Anna!!, you are a real warrior for Christ!!!!☺☺☝☝

  38. That mission house was not sparse by any means. A palace by comparison to how others live there. Seeing a cougar next door should be the least of their worries. That cat was probably after a chicken or a rodent. Wild cats have more sense than to stalk humans for their primary meal. He was probably more scared of the people than they were of him. Shoo kitty. Surprised they didn't talk about the gang violence threat, or how they are going to end it by converting gang members. They posted that on their own page but didn't say it on TV.

  40. "We have to make it look like we know how to cook, even though we don't." I don't find that remark amusing at all. That's another example of not telling the truth. And to your own family!

Being truthful would be standing up & saying, "You know, we don't know how to cook, and everyone in the family knows that. So let's not try to fool anyone. Let's buy what we know we can serve, even if that means ready-made. This should be about family time, not what kind of food we have."

Maybe they edited that part out.

    1. Lighten up. You are making it too much of a big deal. There is a certain amount of pressure placed on girls over cooking. Did you see any of the boys cooking or feeling pressure to be good chefs? No.

      Delete
    2. @Annon 10:10 pm. I believe the blogger was more concerned with the appearance of lying than actual cooking. The " we have to make it look like..." was upsetting to me as well. This family has done enough impressions of "what we have to look like ".

  45. The family in general is lovely, and the girls are especially endearing. However, even being a fan of the show, I was becoming third of certain things. Josh was becoming a turnoff, even before his sins were shown. It's amazing that people of the world will embrace Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner doing th perverse sex change thing, yet they say bad things about yr family. In a way, I understand this. You are promoting a certain way of live, very strongly. So when Josh very deliberately and hypocritically lived a perverse lifestyle, people wanted to just kick him down. Even being a Christian, I do NOT believe I would have accepted him back (and that is okay, according to the Bible). But Anna and Josh should have private talks about what they both need (he may not, deep down, find pregnancy sexy, and Anna is pregnant and nursing for most of her life). So maybe they shouldn't have any more kids.
Being a mom myself, I know the love and forgiveness we have for our own family and children.
So....the purpose for this email is to say what I would love to see on the girls' show....
-NOT Josh, and just a little bit of Anna.
-NOT mom and dad (sorry, as sweet as Michelle is, she's done her time...and Jim Bob shouldn't ever say any sexual comments ('hey, hey, hey') ever again, in light of what Josh has done)
-the older girls doing something MORE with their lives (the comment in the interview of he older teen saying the girls love doing laundry was not good). Think of the Proverbs 31 woman...she buys land buys food from afar. Possibilities for the young ladies includes getting a job, running a food store, ordering, dealing with customers, getting best prices (and when she has children, yes, they are most important, but she could still oversee the running of it). Other possibilities...one of the young ladies should get their real estate licence or mortgage brokerage licence. We, fans watching TV, want to see their strength and dignity, but not while they do laundry and make tater tots!
What about one of them opening a health cafe, with a juice/smoothie bar that is only open until 4 pm. Think trendy health, getting rid of the low class tater tot image.
-how about in the health bar, there are lovely sewn wall hangings with lovely sayings like 'be kind to yourself" or a masculine themed one "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves"(from the first portion of proverbs 31, addressed to the men.
-we don't want to see the same old corny stuff again (advice from dad re: full frontal hugs...again, in light of Josh's sins and how your parenting didn't work for him)
-let us see your lovely young ladies do MORE...something that people can relate to in this modern world, while still staying in tune with God.
-Jessa needs to learn to cook. A GREAT season would be her learning, then being so good at it that she opens th littl cafe. Be relevant in this day and age. Not just breeding

    3. Before calling it "perverse", do you have any knowledge of what transgender people go through, emotionally?
      https://catholictrans.wordpress.com/2015/06/28/to-grieving-parents/

I find it discouraging--this is my second comment on the subject, because the first one wasn't accepted, even though I didn't say anything "profane, insulting, derogatory, or in poor taste"--that Christians, who normally have so much compassion for others, on gender and certain social issues can say such derogatory things about people.

Being gay or transgender is not perverse, nor is it a choice. Molesting your sisters is a choice. Committing adultery is a choice.

  46. It is my opinion that people are nitpicking the Duggar family as well, it seems like they're over critical because one member of the family floundered but we all fail in one way or another just not all of us are in the public eye. I believe that those of you who do not like the Duggar should just not watch the show, they're are plenty of us that like it and want to see it and don't need the critical eyes just looking for them to make a mistake so you can pounce!!! And there's nothing wrong with butter and that was a large group of people to feed so how about just let it go!!!
