Duggars' Response to Gun Controversy

Once again, the Duggars are being criticized for their decision to allow a member of their family to use a gun. Jedidiah Duggar received a gun for Christmas, and the photo of the 16-year-old posing with his gift has gone viral. We want to take a moment to clear up the controversy by giving you the facts.

Many of the online articles that criticize the Duggars for this photo left out one key piece of information, which is the Duggars' stance on gun safety.

This is not the first time the Duggars have been under fire for allowing one of their children to handle a gun, and it will probably not be the last, as the media seems to take advantage of every possible opportunity to spark controversy about this family.

The Duggars understand the importance of teaching their kids how to safely use firearms in order to prevent or minimize the likelihood of accidents.

Here is what Jim Bob Duggar said about the issue when it was brought up by the media in 2011:

"We believe it is important for children to learn safety about guns and knives. To learn how to use them properly and to learn not to use them to hurt others but to use them as a tool."

The Duggars, who defend their constitutional right to bear arms, only allow their older children who have been instructed in gun safety to use fire arms.

"It's really not the gun or the knife; it's the person that has it in their hands," added Jim Bob.

  1. This is unbelievable! And I agree with Jim-Bob it's the person handling the gun. As long as they use proper safety rules I don't see the problem with owning a gun. Also Thank you Lily and Elli for this wonder blog I also enjoy the new Bate's blog

    1. firearms are part of normal life on most of the country, suburban soccer moms and city dwellers need not apply. although it would seem,if you are a city dweller.. Chicago for instance, it might be a pretty handy item to have.

  2. I'm very proud to be able to get to know this wonderful family. All of their children have a wonderful sense of self that I want to give my children. I may not own any weapons personally but I don't attack those that do. Especially if they are smart and responsible about it. I really hope and pray that the Duggar family continues to bless our lives.

    3. The Duggars own rifles which they use for hunting. They have shown family members being taught gun safety on their show, as well as a few of them hunting. These shows are available to watch on YouTube, the Google Play Store or iTunes if anyone has concerns about how this family treats guns. I think it is likely that many of their meals have come from their hunting expeditions, and they were likely very grateful for this source of food - as many other people are - particularly when family funds are low. I was the eldest of eight children and, although my father was a doctor, he struggled financially - particularly in the early years. So he hunted and fished, and was very pleased to supplement our food supply this way. I know families who relied on hunting as a primary food source, and I remain very grateful that this option was available to my family, and theirs.

  8. That's truly great that they defend the constitutional rights to bear arms (I do too!) and that they teach gun and knife safety (I think it should be required! Maybe wouldn't have so many deranged people shooting innocent human beings), but but but... sixteen? See I am not into guns and can't identify them right off the bat and I may sound a little silly, but is that a bebe gun? If so, then it's not as bad, but if that's a legit gun I honestly think the Duggar's are pushing it! He'll be 18 in a couple of years... you're just going to lock them up anyway. Too young, too young

  12. I've noticed a great deal of controversy is towards the Duggars because they are Christians, they are good, and clean and the only "dirt" that can be dug up is made up by the media. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Educated in how to handle a gun is not abuse. I wished the media would leave the Duggars alone. I've seen many unkind headlines about the Duggars and I wished these media mongers would go find some celebrity to pick on and leave these good people alone.

  15. This is not a surprise to me. I've seen the Duggar with firearms and knives on their show before and have heard bad comments about them using these things. Lots of people think this family would never use firearms and knives because of their religion. But because their Southern and there is no mention of owning a gun or knife in the Bible, they should be allowed to own a few guns and knives.

    ReplyDelete
  16. That's such a shame that people have no GOOD news to report and they have to pick on GOOD people for doing something fine.

  17. While I will not change my opinion that pretty much no one should be allowed to handle a gun, I'm very glad the Duggars teach good fun safety! I suppose if someone has to have a gun, I'd like it to be a Duggar :)

It surprises me, though, that they would be criticized for this. It seems to me like all America does is scream about our "right" to bear arms (which I believe is not actually constitutional, since the law was written directed to Minutemen, not the general public). Anyhow. It doesn't matter that much. I trust that the Duggars will use their guns safely and it is sad that they can't do a single thing without being pounded by every gossip magazine. It's ridiculous. Thank the Lord for the gracious way the Duggars respond to so much hate! They are truly an example of God's love and grace. :)

    1. This country has a long history of gun ownership and use well before the War for Independence. The 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was not "written to minutemen". It was written because the Founding Fathers of this nation had lived under the tyranny and oppression of a King and his army. They knew the nation had succeeded to defend their rights and gain their freedom only because they had the means to defend their homes and families - by using firearms. They gave citizens of this newly formed nation the right to continue to protect themselves by giving them and their posterity the right to own and use firearms. I'm glad to see the Duggars taking responsibility in the exercise of their 2nd Amendment rights.

  18. I say kudos to the Duggars for defending their beliefs. I specifically remember an episode where they teach gun safety. This boy has been handling a gun longer than most people know how to type. It irritates me to no end that everyone looks for something to bash the Duggar family. It's crazy. If you don't like their show, don't watch it. It's simple. I love to see something in tv that isn't complete trash, encourages people to be better, and shows the youth of our nation that you don't have to rush into a relationship and do anything that you're not truly ready for. With all the emphasis placed on Sex in this nation how about people sit back and watch as some people still have integrity and understand the value of remaining pure. If you don't like what the Duggars stand for, you're not obligated to watch their show, so dont. They only get called out on things like this because they're on tv.

  19. Jim Bob is right, it is not the weapon that hurts people, and why such a controversy, I have known people who get guns for Christmas and birthdays. People do hunt for food, so why the big deal. And it is only the older kids that have a gun. People just seem to need to pick on the Duggars. I think it is a good picture of Jed and he looks excited to have the gun. Just because people don't always agree with others doesn't mean they need to be rude. I am a Duggar fan, and I think it is a fine gift

    ReplyDelete
  20. The problem isn't the gun, the problem is posting it on Facebook for all to see. I would think that the Duggars would value their privacy, especially on controversial issues. Or are they trying to stir up controversy? There seems to be a pattern of that recently.

    1. Hunting is NOT controversial. People have been hunting for food since their beginning. Many may not wish to acknowledge this, but hunting remains a primary source of food for millions in this country. Banning rifles for hunting would create an increased need that few of those opposed to gun ownership are willing to fill. Although I thoroughly support a family's right to hunt, because I have seen the desperate poverty that drives some to this option, I do not choose to have guns in my household. But I consider myself very blessed because I can afford to shop at the grocery store every week. Many can't, though, and I ask that their circumstances be considered.

And hunting remains a primary source of food for many families today. Those who cannot afford to feed their families any other way, and those who enjoy hunting to supplement their food supply, should not have this option taken away by those who have no experience with food shortages in their families.

One wonders why they found it necessary if they were actually upset about past criticism related to their stance on guns. Maybe it would be better if they kept their views on guns and gun use as a private family matter, unless they have some sort of political agenda? Why do they allow theor son to be part of the controversy by posting his picture to social media. Disappointing.

  29. I don't think the only reason they're getting criticized about this certain situation is because they're the Duggars. Anyone would get criticized for this. I mean, with the constant shootings in America lately, you can see why. It's just that the family's in the public eye, is why it's a big deal. I know the Duggars are responsible but personally I see why they're getting hate from it. I mean, they get hate from any thing they do, but for this I can see why. Like I said, I KNOW they're SUPER responsible about gun safety but anything could happen and I think that's why it's a controversy. Not because of their name, of course it's heightened because of their name but it's because of what America has come to that makes people so concerned. Kudos for the Duggars for still doing what they want and not letting critics affect them though.

  30. If they don't like the controversy that it brings... STOP posting pictures that bring on all the controversy! I love the Duggars but don't understand why they post pictures that they know will bring on tons of criticism.

  32. I find it hard to even like guns in the slightest in the home. As an Australian I have never actually been exposed to a gun in my lifetime. It seems to amaze me that Americans can still justify having looser gun laws given the amount of shootings per year I hear about.

  33. I've been reading about this and I'm wondering it's partly a cultural thing. We've got very different laws here over in Britain - as far as I know here you can't bear arms without a licence. Understand this is just an observation. I'm not criticising the Duggars or any one else who lets their children use firearms. As far as I'm concerned to each their own.

  34. People truly need to stop trying to make everything a controversy. They have had proper training and have the constitutional right to bear arms. Lets focus on the real issues out there and stop attacking a wonderful family.

  35. People who are constantly bringing up controversial issues are looking for attention, in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Of course they teach their children gun safety. Who wouldn't? The real issue is how they are portraying themselves on social media. The Duggars family is beginning to create an image of themselves as a family with extreme rules about almost everything, who aren't teaching their children the value of a regular job with regular hours and answerable to someone else, who talk of modesty yet speak of immodest things too often to count, and who seem to have abundant time to create a media storm and then put out the fires. It is an idle lifestyle that will not sustain itself in the long run.

  39. I wholeheartedly support the Duggar boy getting a gun..he is 16, in my state that is the legal age to hunt on your own. With proper gun safety taught, many youth receive their first own hunting firearm at this age. It is for hunting, people....geesh. Many older people received their first rifle around this age or younger. What is wrong with people? There are 12 year olds who hunt, for goodness sakes.

could you please pass this little piece of advise to the Duggars? they should stop worrying too much about what anyone says. If you put your life out there on public display people will always bash and critisize you. I believe Duggars should not constantly apologize for every single thing they do or say. unless there is some really serious stuff (marriages, courtship rules, birth of kids, political views, stuff Duggars strongly care about and promote) I dont believe they should constantly explain or justify every single thing they do or say. it will only spark more controversy and give the haters more power. besides a lot of their fans dont even care for the haters. stay strong Duggars and dont worry too much about what everyone says!

  43. I don't think the gun thing is a big deal in this family. They seem to be quite safety conscious and teach their age appropriate children the right way to handle and respect a weapon. It's probably also a cultural thing in that area of the country. I believe that there is risk in anything we do; even getting into a car and driving on the public roads. We take safety precautions when we drive, and are IN a moving weapon, just like we should take precautions when HANDLING a stationary weapon like a gun, knife, etc. I'm quite critical of this family's lifestyle as it is, but I don't think this is an issue to criticize them about. Just my opinion, and thank you for posting it for others to read and consider.

    1. Um..One good reason Jesus did not use a gun is because they didn't exist when he lived. People use guns for hunting, not just for killing people. Unless you're a vegetarian, your food is usually killed before you eat it. Just saying....:)

    2. If knives and guns were wrong, man would have died out long ago. Hunting was our only source of meat until recent advances in herding and meat production developed in the last century. Only by using weapons, including stones, then knives, then guns, did we have an advantage over our animal prey. We are simply not designed like lions and other animals to kill our food without weapons.

Anyway, I myself am not so worried about the guns as I am about Josh & Anna's kitchen! Every time I see it, I shout out at the TV "put those knives away girl!" Yikes, she's got that huge knife block set out right on her kitchen counter and as many times as I've seen her kids and the young Duggar kids climbing up on tables & kitchen counter tops, that's the safety concern I'm thinking of, not a 16-year old with a hunting rifle.

No one is calling us out for my 14yr old using a shotgun so why bother this family. With that many mouths to feed, and I have 8 children myself, you utilize every resource available. Guns are just that a tool. Teach children respect, responsibility, and accountability with a fire arm and there should be nothing to comain about. Carry on Duggars!

  58. Much of the problem that arises around firearms is an experience issue: For people who are around activities with firearms (target shooting, skeet, hunting) arms are a natural part of life. Other people's lives, however, don't include or even relate to such activities and there are also people who live in places where guns only mean violence. Each group reacts from their own life experience and so to some good people youth with guns are just part of life and to other good people youngsters using guns are a shock and illogical. (of course, there are also trolls, hyper "entertainment/news" folks, and us vs them types, etc. adding to the lack of civil discussion). If more people would follow Mrs. Duggar's style and respond to situations using the fruits of the spirit:[love, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, meekness, temperance... Gal 5:22-23] we could live more peaceful lives.

  70. I don't believe in guns and especially kids and guns, but I don't believe my beliefs should trump someone elses beliefs. The Duggars and many others choose to bare arms so instead of cutting them down for it and hating over it why not hate the people in the world that are using guns to commit crimes and not the ones who like target practices and hunting stuff like that. Mostly spend more time worrying about your own life and stop putting your noses in someone elses.

On the door of the Sandy Hook School it said that it was a gun free zone. Guess the shooter forgot to read that.

  72. The Duggars spend a lot of time watching what they watch, what they wear, and even what they say. Why? Because they don't want to do or say anything that could be construed in a way that isn't pleasing to the Lord. At the very least, my concern with these pictures that they insist on, not just taking, but putting out in public, is that it's at best, a distraction from the message of Christ that they want to represent. At worst, there seems to be an air of apathy and rebellion about it that is troubling. Yes, we have second amendment rights in this country. But so what? Just because something is permissible does not make it beneficial. And throwing guns in people's face, just because they can (which I'm sorry, is how this comes across) is not something that seems to be at all Christ-like to me. This is not a Christ-exulting cause. And whether the Duggars like it or not, the world looks and sees them and how much they purport to love Jesus and all people, and then processes their (what appears to be prideful) gun-toting as either making them look like hypocrites, or as part of the message of the Christian faith. In no way am I saying it's wrong for people to have guns, but I am saying that a little respect and tact in light of all the gun violence we do see in this country is in order. Too many Christians are confusing their politics with the message of Jesus Christ and are presenting it to the world as being one in the same. Have your political opinion, that's fine. But keep it separate from Christ's message. And unfortunately, the Duggars have, in this way, done what many evangelicals do, and mixed the message up so much that the lines seem to be unclear to them and to their audience. I am a Christian. I believe Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior and have for 19 years now. But I would be very wary of mixing up my political beliefs (especially as it pertains to the very divisive, and yes, concerning issue of guns) with my faith. I'm sorry to say this, but the continual posting of these pictures (I'm thinking back to the one with Jessa) looks very prideful indeed. As if a statement is being made. And because the Duggars spend so much time making almost everything about their faith, it looks as if they are claiming Jesus is on their side in this. And that's troubling. I do hope the Duggars read this blog and see that there are Christians out there who find this witness troubling. And I say all of this with as much respect as I can muster. I do like the Duggars. They seem like people who are very dedicated to the faith, even though their lifestyle is very different from mine. But please, let's not confuse what is the faith and what isn't.

  73. I don't see how God's will for people not to kill each other, as said in the Bible, can be taken seriously while owning a gun.

    ReplyDelete
  74. 1. Nobody buys a gun to teach about gun safety. They buy the gun to shoot at something like an animal.
    2. If they want to teach about gun safety, they would have done it with the gun that they had earlier.
    3. They are only teaching the older kids gun safety and not the younger kids who might get their hands on the gun.
    4. It's a rifle, not a gun.
    5. What exactly are the knives they own that they have to teach knife safety?

    ReplyDelete
  75. I'm sure you know what you're doing as parents. You have 19 kids and not one has been in trouble with the law, on drugs, committing crimes or running the streets. You two have given them a good wholesome education, Christian lessons and taught them to talk things out instead of raising their hands to settle a disagreement. I'm sure these 19 Duggar Children know more about living safely and gun control than any of us. Let this family be and stop exaggerating everything they do or accusing them of things just because you don't agree with their way of life. Actually, we could all take a lesson from this family and I bet there would be less violence in this world and less hate.

  76. I agree!! There is nothing wrong with owning a gun, as long as u know gun safety and use it carefully! God bless u, Duggar family! <3

Sorry this is just really dumb. Not the post but the media for meddling in things that ain't (yes I said ain't!) none of their as my children would beeswax!

  78. I am from Canada. A lot of Canadians don't understand why the Americans have this love affair with guns. Jesus never owned or walked around with a weapon (at least the Bible doesn't say so).

  80. When nineteen children turn out as wonderfully as the Duggars, people feel threatened when they cannot raise one or two children as successfully. As God is their guide, it is no wonder that this family turns out responble and productive citizens. It is our constitutional right to bear arms and, as they striclty enforce gun safety, there is nothing wrong with Jedidiah, as an older adolescejnt, having a rifle. People should "take the log out of their own eye before they try to remove the speck from someone elses" ...the Bible

  81. Get over it people. These are good parents. Go on with your lives because I guarantee that they have gone on with their lives.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I'm from Canada as well, and I am so glad that they are teaching proper gun safety and that they are for the right to bear arms. The burglar in your house isn't going to buy a gun legally, so the only option is whether you are going to be able to protect yourself and your family or not. :) This is just my personal opinion :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. While it's true that it's the person holding the gun, it's still the gun. Guns have no other purpose than to kill something. That's what they were explicitly designes to do!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Some people commenting are saying that it isn't right for the Duggars to have a gun because as Christians they know that God says "thoou shalt not kill". I think it's irresponsible to assume that because someone has a gun, they are going to kill a human being with it. The gun he is holding is clearly meant for hunting animals. If I had such a large family; I would want to hunt as a source for cheap protein too! God gave Adam dominion over animals. Therefore, if the Duggars want to hunt they aren't breaking any commandments.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. So why is it ok to teach your child to be violent toward animals? He doesn't need to hunt for his food. Good peaceful Christians should be respectful of all of God's creatures. God speaks of his love for all of his creation in the book of Job.

      Delete
    2. No one should take pleasure in killing anything. Thats cruel. God gave dominion to Adam so that he would care for animals and creation not kill it. We are supposed to take care of the planet too not exploit it.

      Delete
    3. In most areas of the country, there are hunting seasons. One of the reasons this is so is to control the wild life population. Seeing as they live in a rural area, this could very easily be the case. Would you rather have a responsible teenage boy kill a deer, or a deer kill a driver and possibly passengers when it runs out in the road in front of a car? This does happen.
God did not condemn the killing of animals in the Bible. The Jews ate lamb at the Passover and offered animals as sacrifice. They are not people with immortal souls. Nothing wrong with supplementing your store-bought food with some game.

      Delete
    4. So if God doesn't want us to eat animals then why did Jesus serve bread and fish (a living animal) to 5,000 people?

  85. As an Australian I cannot for the life of me understand the hysteria in America about the right to carry a gun. I thank God in my country its not a right. How many innocent people and children are killed in the US every year by people who have the right to carry arms! Insane!

  86. Jesus never walked around with a weapon, but one of His disciples did. Remember Peter and his sword? Yes, he cut off a soldier's ear in a desperate moment. Jesus healed the soldier's ear. "Blessed are the peacemakers".

  87. I just read the comment on # 76. At first, I skipped it because it was long but then I went back and read it. Y'all should take the time to read this one. It is very well thought out. Mixing our poliitical beliefs with our faith is a very common mistake. It really confuses the message of the gospel. Jesus never had a political message.

  92. Dude! Just because you have a gun does NOT mean you have to kill people!

    ReplyDelete
  93. I look at the range of comments on this subject and I have to say that people had guns when this country was founded over 200 years ago. Is there an obsession with guns or is this an obsession with controversy? If this was Joe Doe the son of someone who doesn't have a reality show who posted on facebook, would there be such a conflict? Or is it because Jim Bob is a Christian and they are well known? If guns were banned, and someone had rage against another, they would find another way of inflicting wounds or killing, by baseball bat or knives, or an axe. Are we going to ban baseball bats, knives and axes?

It's not the weapon that's the problem, it's the sin issue and the lack of faith in God that causes such sin. The shooting in Paris was caused by a false religion and hatred, it's not because of gun control. The issue is that the society has removed God from schools, and Christianity and Judaism has been shown in a negative light in all forms of media. There is no fear of God and that is the problem, it's not the weapon. We have had guns from the birth of this nation. It's not the guns that are our problems, it's the lack of fear of God that has created all this mess, in Ferguson, MO, New York City and every other place in this country.

So for these anti-gun people, the guns are NOT the problem, it's the sin condition of this nation! As I mentioned earlier, if someone has rage, they'll find something else to use as a weapon, even if it's a tool or some other object. The heart condition of man is wicked, it's not tools, guns or toys that are the problem.

Also, "toy guns" were given as gifts to boys for years, whether it be toy policemen items, or cowboys and indians, or in the day when toy guns were just toys and not considered some horrible thing..back in the day when boys were boys, and girls were girls, and the family meant something. When God and prayer was still in school, and abortion was something illegal, guns were not even considered an "issue".

It's not guns that are the problem, it's the state of our nation, wicked in their hearts...that is our problem. Nobody talks about how wicked a nation we have become as a whole, we see rage because a 16 year old young man is holding a gun. But nobody addresses the abundant sins that are committed everyday....

Let's get our priorities in the right place folks. Wake up and see how bad this country really is and return to the Lord! Jesus is the only peace and eternal life!

  94. The only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun, is a GOOD guy with a gun... Just sayin'...

  95. @Anonymous There are other purposes for firearms besides killing something/someone. My son has owned and used firearms safely since he was in his early teens. He has participated and competed in 4-H shooting sports programs for several years. People who shoot targets or skeet/trap enjoy it as a sport. There is nothing wrong with that.

I don’t see anything wrong with using a firearm for hunting either. People have to eat, and many people still hunt to put meat on the table for their families. For those quoting the Bible as teaching we should not kill animals consider the many passages where animals were used as a sacrifice in the Old Testament and a portion of that meat went to feed the priests. Abraham had an animal killed and cooked to feed the 3 visitors that came to him. God told Peter that all animals were good for food. Jesus prepared a meal of fish for his disciples on the shore (and ate with them) when he appeared to them after the resurrection. Jesus fed the multitudes with 5 loaves of bread and 3 fish. The Bible does not condemn eating meat.

If you don’t like firearms, shooting sports, hunting, etc. that is your choice. Other people have a choice too. Firearms are legal in this country and have been since before the founding of our nation. If someone is irresponsible with a firearm and commits a crime they should be punished; but those who act responsibly with their firearms should not be punished because of the actions of those who don’t.

I was shocked actually when last year I saw a picture of one of the duggers with a good and I couldn't believe through all your love and protecting your children from films Internet tv you would let them have contact with fire arms

  102. Guns are not just for killing ( although one does have the right to proect and provide). My son is in 4-h and he does shooting sports. Archery, .22 rifle, air pistol, air rifle and shot gun. This all for target competition. He has been doing this for 5 years and has never killed anything.

  103. Wow, they are learning proper gun handling that is most importnat, People don't kill people and no guns dont kill unless they are in the hands of someone who is unstable. Hunting anmails isn't bad either, it is good food and help our enviroments. If the goverment take guns away their are still going to be killings people with still find them, so taking away guns from the responsible people eont be right. Everyone saying you ban guns it will fix everything apperntly living in another world.

I am wondering about their Baptism. When do they baptize. We have to do it when they are a baby. In the days before Jesus on earth they were circumcised and then Baptism came. And we are not saved with Baptism either.

  111. I'm not a big fan of guns. I live in large urban center and though we have conceal-carry here in Illinois, I think carrying a weapon gives people a false sense of security and does not offer appropriate protection. We also have many gangs and gun violence is a daily fact of life. That being said, I often visit a small town in Illinois near Missouri that is about 250 miles from where I live. Hunting is part of the culture there and I laughed when I saw a gun raffle being held to raise money for the high school girls' basketball team. A lot of people hunt and gun safety is a top priority. Where the Duggars live is so similar to other rural, populist areas. I can believe how people are overreacting to the picture of Jedidiah holding a hunting rifle. I watch 19 Kids and the Bates, more out of curiosity than an agreement with their beliefs. I enjoy the adventures, but I think people are really looking for things to pick on. I feel much safer with Jedidiah holding a hunting rifle than I do a Gangster Disciple in Chicago.

  112. To Anonymous 133 (The Marine): The problem with what you are saying is, the "founders" weren't perfect. And neither was the Constitution or even The Bill of Rights. The Constitution needed amendments immediately, and has throughout the centuries/decades. So the argument can be made that it still needs amending. We are moving TOWARD a "more perfect union". So criticizing the Constitution, the amendments to the Constitution, I would argue, is actually a healthy thing. Debate is good for the country, and ultimately, what I believe the founders wanted. They spent a long time debating. I'm sure they could have imagined the debate continuing. It's not a perfect document. And I would argue, the 2nd amendment is part of the Constitution that is worth debating, as it has such high stakes in our country right now.

  113. Im 50/50 ...For one thing the Duggars live way out away from the general population and there are unscrupulous people who could be stalker obsessed uber fans who are mentally unbalanced who might sneak on to their property and possibly do them harm...could happen. So there for, its great that whom ever was at home could defend the family with precision. However, i dont see the need for some guns like some semi automatic rifles or machine guns.As for hunting, we need to keep some populations in check, especially overpopulation of deer who would carry disease that would harm the food chain and us. Yes ,we have the right to bare arms, but it should only be certain ones with certain stipulations of licencing and classes for certifications, backround checks, stiffer laws for not complying and such.Education is key, and the Duggars fit that bill completely...not worried at all about them having guns.It is a true fact though that the U.S. has more gun violence per every second than Europe ,Australia and Canada has in a whole year...thats a disturbing statistic.

  114. Since the time that I started watching the Duggars on tv. I believe them to be a very loving and responsible couple and family an they have taught their children to be the same. I don't believe they would have given one of their children something such as a gun, before they were taught the safety rules before hand. Put things in God's hands and leave it there.

  115. It does seem a little strange to see the banner "CHRIST IS BORN" with a child holding a huge gun. Guns are made to kill and destroy. Christ came to heal and save. You can still like the Duggars and not agree with everything they do.

  117. I applaud the Duggars for allowing their children to own a gun. I am all for the right to own, carry and use a gun when hunting or protecting my family against predators with four legs or two legs. Considering the family values of the Duggars I know they are well educated in carrying, discharging, and legally using a firearm. I have a permit to carry a concealed pistol and I am fully aware of the damage a gun can do in the hands of someone bent on hurting others. However, in our world today there is not enough law enforcement agents to be in the right place at the time of a crime being committed. I PRAY I NEVER have to protect myself using my weapon, but I also know I will not stand by and let my right to bare arms taken away from me. It is a constitutional right as American to own a firearm. I am trained by a law enforcement officer who is an instructor in the use of firearms and I know the danger.
I hope the Duggars continue to show their support of the right to bear arms and they have done nothing illegal or immoral by giving the gift of a gun to their children. I can rest easy knowing they are safe.

  118. Merry Christmas Jedidiah! I received my first gun at age 13 1985. My 3 children started shooting at ages 7,5, and 5. This year they all got a .22 rifle , which I control . But they are theirs. It's an important responsibility to be trained in as Americans. A firearm is a tool, as is a car or chainsaw. The power for good and evil. The tool is neutral. It is the user that gives it meaning. The founders of our Country listed the right to KEEP and BEAR ARMS because they knew that an armed citizenry was a balance to central government power to KEEP them restrained and provide a means of throwing off a tyrannical government. Also you didn't need a large standing army if the average citizen was proficient with arms. Training children in marksmanshipand firearms handling is also training them the judicious use of power. The power of self defense and restraint of evil. In a free land with free men the government is not the parent. The government is the servant of the free men and women. But in a land where the government is the guardian/parent. Then there is no free men or women. But subjects of the central power who have only that which is given or allowed by the government. The ownership of arms of any kind is a control issue. People must be restrained. Either they will be self restrained or they will need to be restrained by a guardian as children are. I believe that Benjamin Franklin said that as a people become more vicious they have need of more masters. We must teach self control to our children and demand it of each other lest we have need of more masters. By giving you that shotgun they are showing trust and calling you to be self controlled and to grow into that adult role of self government that our country was founded on. Merry Christmas and may God grow you into a righteous man who stands for good and against wrong.
