Duggar Book #3 is Out

Growing Up Duggar has been officially released! Head to your local bookstore, or order online. The Duggar girls' book can be purchased on Barnes & Noble, Christian Book, Amazon, and many other sites. We read it, and we highly recommend that you do the same. Here's our review:

"Thoughtfully written. Overflowing with stories that will warm your heart and practical suggestions on how to live a life filled with love, joy, and fulfillment as you seek to follow the plan God has for you.  This is a must-read for females of any age."

  1. Recovering grace website offers loving support to many who have been wounded by the harmful extra biblical teachings of ATI and basic principles taught by Bill Gothard. Gods truth is a true treasure worth finding. Please do not accept the deceiving substitute Gothard proclaims with man made authority. Jesus desires to set you free. I pray you allow this to be posted.

  9. I have loved the Duggar family for quite a long time. I am a Christian but I am not totally familiar with all of the tenets of their faith. I recently heard about Bill Gothard going on leave because of some scandals with immorality and abuse of his staff. I know that a lot of what the Duggars have patterned their life around is because of the teachings of Bill Gothard. I am assuming that you lovely ladies who run this blog belong to the same group. I have a few questions that I would love if you would take the time to answer.
    1. Is following Bill Gothard's teachings considered a religion of sorts, or just helpful advice? The Duggars seem to follow it like a religion, and it seems to have quite a following, but I am just not sure about this. And is Bill Gothard thought to be a minister and leader of this religion?
    2. What is your reaction to the recent events of this man's having to leave his ministry?
I am not trying to make anyone upset about this, I just really would like to know. Like I said, I love the Duggars and have found so much of what they teach so helpful. It is just confusing to me as to what their religion is--it seems like they are so strict with the Bill Gothard teachings and I wonder if they think you have to follow his programs to be the very best Christian possible and perhaps ultimately be saved. I would really appreciate some feedback on this--thanks!

    1. Bill Gothard is a minister, not the head of his own religion. The Duggars are fundamentalist baptists, and don't exclusively use Gothard's teachings but rather gather wisdom from a variety of Christian sources. A word of advice to all seekers of the truth: Don't look merely to one person or group here on Earth to show you the way to Christ. Humans are fallible; Gothard isn't the first and won't be the last to fall into scandal. Search for yourself, and when you hear teaching from any Christian minister or bible teacher, always look for yourself and ask God to give you discernment. Never follow any man/woman/church/group blindly; do your own research and see if you come to the same conclusions. Use ministers as a guide to your own search, not as the end-all and be-all to your relationship with your Creator.

  11. I bought it from B&N today and also got it on Kindle and audio through Amazon.
On a side note, Jim Bob and Michelle and 17 of their 19 children will be in Clinton, TN tomorrow, March 7 for a rally and book signing in support of Zach Bates. Zach is running for mayor. Here's the link to more information: http://blog.thebatesfamily.com/2014/03/03/duggars-campaign-for-zach/ I know it's short notice, but I thought maybe some of your readers would like to know if they live close.

    Thank You!

  14. When will you be making the "official" announcement on Ben and Jessa? It's so obvious from his social media posts and her hiding her ring finger that they are engaged....

  15. I love the Duggars! But having said that they have gone into promotion mode about their book...its all about the book and the cash. Their girls are very lovely but hard to believe any one of them have ever deviated from the family in any way at all....Michelle and Jim Bob have the control!!!

  16. @Anonymous Going on a book tour is what happens when you write a book. Why is that a bad thing? Typically, it's written into your book contract, so you don't have a choice. You go where the publisher tells you. (I should know, I'm a writer.) Plus, why would it be a bad thing for them to go out and meet people and bring encouragement to people as they do all the time? It's what they're all about - encouraging people through many mediums (tv, books, and in person). God forbid anyone actually make money and do what they love and honor God all at the same time. Isn't that "the American Dream"?

  17. Wow I can't believe you deleted my comment ladies! I don't feel I was in any way, "profane, derogatory, or in poor taste" and I really was wondering about those things. I am sure that a lot of your readers wonder the same things about the culture/religion of ATI and Bill Gothard. It would be really nice if you could explain this more so that those outside of this can understand it better. Do you consider the teachings of Bill Gothard a religion in itself or just some good advice? Do you and the Duggars feel this it is necessary for your salvation to follow his teachings? I promise I just want to know, I am not trying to pass judgement at all. I am very interested in it because of the success I see with the Duggar family. However, I am also interested because of the recent controversy with Bill Gothard and these abuse allegations. Please respond! Thanks!

  18. I have read this book, a good read. I enjoyed the personal stories best as a lot of the advice was aimed at young girls, but still lots for older fans so worth a read for us too.

Lilly and Ellie I think you should do a question on who would you like to write a book next? My choice is Grandma Duggar, she has an interesting life story and seems very wise. She could give good advice esp to other Grandmas and mother-in-laws.

I will get it free from my public libiary if they have it. read one of their books a few years ago and did not care for it very much. I hope only the girls get the money not jim bob and michelle.

  25. the comment about following people. we do not follow people or a minster. we only follow Christ. read and search the bible for yourself so you may know the truth. Study Gods word deeply so you can find the truth yourself. do not let the duggars or any one lead you.

  26. I don't recall the Duggars ever stating that they follow Gothard, could it be that people just assume that they do for some similar beliefs they have in common, or am I wrong?

  27. I just got my book on Friday, and I have already read it once. It has already helped me considerably with some of my relationships, and has really convicted me of other things. While I don't have all the same convictions as they do, I have learned some valuable things from them, and I am grateful. I really enjoy following this blog, Thank you @Lilly and Ellie!

  28. Hi Lily and Ellie, a few questions. Firstly, I am going to attend a book signing, and was wondering if they will be selling books at it. Secondly, do you think the book is appropriate for a fifth grader? My little sister wants to read it , but I wanted to make sure it was appropriate.

    Thanks!

  29. Just downloaded your book to my Nook and I love what I have read so far! Great Job. I will probably read this more than once and study the bible verses that you have referenced. Be very proud of what your family is doing because it is helping people because I have learned so much from your family and I feel I am a better parent because of your teaching. Thank you.

  31. @Anonymous

    Hi Anonymous 30,

You will be able to purchase the book at the book-signings. At the Barnes & Noble signings, only books purchased from Barnes & Noble can be signed.

The book is definitely appropriate for your fifth grade sister. The girls write a lot about accepting yourself, listening to your parents, and having a right relationship with God.

    Enjoy the book-signing!
