Do Your Hair Like a Duggar

What's the secret to those big, beautiful curls? Find out in the video below!

While eating tater tot casserole at the Duggars' super-sized dining room table earlier this week, the girls and I (Ellie) were discussing hairstyles. Anna suggested we film a tutorial to show the world how to create the Duggar look. We grabbed a camera and headed up to the girls' room. Anna and Jason filmed, Jessa was the stylist, and Jill was the model. Enjoy!

  2. I've always wondered while watching the show... Do the duggars work out? The girls in particular? They're always so put together and feminine. I've never seen one with her sweaty hair in a ponytail after just getting home for a run lol :)

    1. I never see them with their hair tied back. Those Arkansas summers must get hot. What's up with that?

  5. I style my hair very similarly and it was helpful to see what products they use while they're curling. Thanks for the tutorial, ladies!

  6. Is Jill courting? I've heard rumors going around that she is and I wanted to know if anyone here knows for sure... thanks!

  7. Excellent, idea! Thanks for posting this, Ellie! Could we get a future video on how they do their makeup? It always looks natural but so well done. I'm going to go shopping at Walmart later today to hopefully make my hair look lovely. I've always wondered how to make my hair look that way!

  8. Ellie it's nice to see you in the video! I always pictured you as much older for some reason. I had no idea you were a young 20-something. Thanks for the tutorial Ladies.

  12. thanks for the tutorial! it was very helpful.
i dont curl my hair anymore because my hair is straight and it takes forever to curl it.
i have 2 questions: could i use Suave hairspray instead of Aussie? and does Jill have bangs? i want to know because i have bangs and i dont know if that hairstyle will work on me.

  25. Thank you for the video! I sometimes do my hair that way, too. Absolutely beautiful young women.

    ReplyDelete
  26. What a great tutorial! So easy! My hair is naturally curly...so I don't use heat products in it....but my daughter has thick hair with lots of body. This is something we will have to try. Thanks! :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. That's so cool! I've always wanted to do that but I have shoulder length naturally curly hair. I'm going to do that to my sister!!! Thanks Lily and Ellie!!!!!

  29. What an adorable video with three beautiful girls. Is there anything those Duggar girls can't do??

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thank you for posting this! I was wondering if they did the sock curls thing or used hot tools. Great video tutorial. Fun to see you all together too :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. That was really informative as I always wondered how they got such soft looking curls. I will have to try their method tomorrow. I have also always wondered at what age they stop wearing the headbands. It seems like maybe around 10 years old?

    ReplyDelete
  32. THANK YOU for this!
I had been wondering how they did their hair for the longest time!
I did not want to sound so vain and post questions like....how do they do their hair?

And the cheap curling iron of from wal-mart....I love that!
    Thats all I can afford,
Most of the hair tutorials on YouTube use the $50+ ones purchased from Ulta.
As much as I would love one, it is just not in the budget.

Thanks so much for sharing this!
    Blessings to you!

  33. @Mel C.

    Hi Mel C.,

The Duggar girls like Aussie Instant Freeze because it holds their hair well, but you can use any type of hair spray. Jill does not have bangs.

  34. Jessa is a natural with hair,as she is the main hair trimmer of the boys too.She could have fun learning from the Cosomotology books and become certified very quickly, she easily could do it on line and get a mannequin for home practice to learn her cutting techniques and then open her own shop at home for another income. She can do makeup, nails, pedicures, ect.and make a nice additional income for her and Ben and have a blast doing something she's already talented at.Just an idea..;-)

  35. Ellie and Lily, I would love to learn more about your beautiful family.Do you live in Ak. Also, I want to commend you Ladies, I don't know how you can stay so graceful while sifting thru so many negative comments, I'm sure you see a lot more than we do and yet you still can keep your cool, when I often get so upset at some of them.I'm trying to be a better Christian, so I pray for those who are insensitive towards the family. Thanks for all you do for us fans...Sincerely, Natalie

  36. do they do their own hair or does one do each of their hair. who cuts their hair. seems like their hair has a lot of split ends. how often do they buy hair products. they do not buy used curling irons michelle says they buy everything used? do they still buy their clothes used?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wow!!! Do MORE!!!! I loved this video!!! It was so fun to watch. So yes, PLEASE make more videos!!! I love their hair too like everyone else said in their comments!!! Thanks for sharing this. Mary

    ReplyDelete
  39. @AnonymousI'm a hair stylist, and as I see it their hair has no split ends,it looks to me that their hair is in great condition.those girls are truly lucky that they don't have to wear extentions,I'm so tired of doing them.Bless you young ladies!

  40. Same Jen from comment #7. Do you know if TLC is going to release season 6 on dvd? I purchase the episodes on Amazon, but like to buy the hard copies for on the road or when I don't have access to Amazon. It seems like TLC has taken a long time to release season 6, when we are closely approaching yet another season. And if you check in with the Duggars, see if the ladies would mind doing a makeup tutorial! It might be a bit embaressing for them, but they make an effort to keep it natural so as "not" to draw too much attention. There are many young ladies that want to look natural, but don't know what to use or the first thing about applying makeup to keep the focus on God. Thanks for this video, Ellie, and to all the Duggar Ladies (and gentleman who made the video) :).

  41. Wonderful tutorial! I've always, always wondered how they got their curls! It looks so easy!

  42. Any hope of college for this family or god forbid they may be exposed to a real education. Neither parent attended college. What are they so afraid of,

    ReplyDelete
  43. That was super cute and kind of Jessa and Jill to demonstrate :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Jessa's hair looks great straight!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thanks for the video! How long did it take to do Jill's whole head of hair? I would assume at least 30 minutes? Jessa seems very patient and talented. I have very long hair but use the old blue/white spiral perm rods. I put them in at night and wake up in the morning with spiral curls that last till I wash my hair with no heat or hairspray. My daughter uses the curlformers (which are softer then the perm rods) but give the same long lasting curl.

  46. @Cammie

    Hi Cammie,

It only took about 15 minutes for Jessa to curl Jill's hair.

  49. This is great!! I've always wondered. Now we need a video in how they do their beautiful, natural makeup.

    ReplyDelete
  50. This is wonderful, but that would take me forever! LOL I have really thick, long hair, so I think I'd only do something like this on special days.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Fun to watch! Would love to see a makeup tutorial next! I've always wanted to be able to do the natural looking makeup, but all the people who have tried to show me seemed to cake it on too much for what I like and I feel ridiculous and fake. Maybe the Duggars could show us some tips?

    ReplyDelete

  66. Does the curling iron burn the ends of your hair or do you keep the ends trimmed? I have been growing my hair for the last three years and am thinking about cutting 11-12" for cancer patient wigs. My hair is a natural light blonde (I am completely gray, but the colour is the same as a light blonde). I want the remaining hair to be shoulder length so that I can still braid it or put it in a bun for special occasions and continue to grow it for another year or more before cutting it again for the same benefit. I admire you girls and how mature you are compared to the average woman your ages. Best wishes to Jill on your engagement, Derrick is a Godly man who will treat you as a princess everyday of your life. I'm excited to see what God has planned for you both! MJM Newmarket NH

  67. @Tuesday
Why wouldn't she be able to have additional income? There is no reason she wouldn't be allowed if she chose that path for her life. Certainly, Jill, I think will be busy in foreign ministry with her husband; Jessa is only courting...wait and see. Stay positive about the lives these remarkable people choose. MJM Newmarket NH

I can't help but wonder, how do they keep their hair looking so clean while on mission trips?
From personal experience, some places don't have have the resources to wash or style hair.
    How do they do it?

  75. Your hair looks so great naturally, jealous! I wish I could curl my hair with a straightener like you can, it would make traveling easier. But I have to have my curling wand!

  82. I also really love their hair with the flowery barrettes in them. They make their own statement that isn't necessary popular, and I like that. Very feminine, very pretty. Reminds me of when my daughter was little and I'd add things to her hair. She wares things occasionally as a 38 yr. old as well.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Jessa said she has natural curly hair. So do I, and I'm trying to figure out to make my hair look like this (not too good with hair and make-up). When it's wet, does she blow dry, flat iron AND THEN use curling iron?? Thank you so much! You girls are a blessing!!

    ReplyDelete
  93. I loved this tutorial!

If you and the girls filmed a video on makeup, you guys would have a great opportunity to present your views on makeup and impact many girls to think about makeup from a Biblical perspective. And I know there would be tons of people interested in watching it!

    Just a thought. . .

    ReplyDelete
  94. I just want to know what kind of shampoo they use.

    ReplyDelete
  95. @Fight pancreatic cancer.
I dont think they are afraid of anything. They choose to do what they are gifted at (Jim Bob has been in real estate and politics so fear is not an option). I am sure if one decides to be a school teacher or RN or Dr they will go off to college at some point.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I love how your family understands a women can take care of herself and look feminine everyday but not be vain. I also have very, very thick hair and tried to grow it out about 5 years ago. I got it down to my waste line and it started causing migraines and a sore neck even when I wore my hair down. Please don't forget that your health is important and you may have female family member or your sons may court a women who just can't wear their hair long. It would be a shame to see them suffer headaches, neck pain or back pain for the semblance of long hair in your beliefs.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Cute girls. But it sure seems like they spend an awful lot of attention on their appearance despite Biblical warnings against doing so. I've read that they don't dye their hair or condone plastic surgery because they believe a person should look the way God made them. Yet they paint their faces in dark eyeliner and heat style their hair into hair-sprayed ringlets.

    ReplyDelete
  98. @AnonymousAnonymous 104. Please don't judge. The girls love The Lord. Jesus don't mind that they wear make up. The girls do not put on a lot pf make up on their face. Stop following man make up rules and stop judging. We all going to stand in front of God one day to be judge.

  105. The girls always maintain their femininity. An admirable achievement.

  106. They are beautiful ladies, inside and out!!

    ReplyDelete
  107. @AnonymousYou have to go to school to get your cosmetology degree. It takes about a year and a half. You can't do hair at home and charge for it, that is illegal. Nails are not taught at beauty school. They just do a real quickie on manicuring, but not doing nails. Now you can cut anyone's hair at home all you want, but you can't charge for the service. Have to get a license and take an exam through the State boards. Some states take more than a year and a half. And cutting hair isn't as easy as it looks. I have my license and I've seen more botched haircuts that they show up at my salon to repair.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Looks easy enough. So we know what styling products you use, what about shampoo and conditioner? Your hair looks so healthy.

    ReplyDelete
  117. The Duggar girls have such beautiful hair! :) ...Just a head's up though, the close captioning is not accurate and it does not type out what the girls are saying. For example, instead of it saying "we are here with the Duggar girls," it says " we are here with a doctor girl." I believe it is all auto-generated, but if it can be corrected, that would be great so your hearing impaired fans can also receive this awesome hair advice :)
