Duggar Graduation #8 of 19

Over the weekend, the Duggars celebrated Josiah Duggar's high school graduation. What advice would you offer to the 17-year-old as he enters this new season of life?

  2. Seek what God has for you to do. Continuing education is very important; continuing education does not always mean college, but it could mean that. God needs strong Christian men in many places, and there are some jobs that require a college degree. Do not be afraid to get out there and apply to a college that offers whatever it is that God has placed on your heart to do.

Stay accountable to other Christian men. Enjoy life and have fun too.

  9. Did he graduate from high school? or get a GED? The Duggars talk so much about homeschool but never get a lot of specifics. Your reporting says high school, so do the Duggars use a program that allows the kids an actual high school diploma? I know Josh talked about getting a GED but I haven't heard Jinger, Jessa or any of the recent kids to finish school talk about getting one. I would love to know more about what finishing homeschool means for the Duggars.

  15. Pray to go out into the world to be who God created you to be. Just you. What God created YOU to be. Pray for that and things will work out just fine.

  16. Josiah is 17? Already? Where has the time gone?

  17. MY ADVICE WOULD BE STRIKE OUT ON YOUR OWN AND STOP HIDING BEHIND THE DUGGAR NAME. YOU ALL ARE VERY TALLENTED INDIVIDUALS. YOU DONT NEED TO STAY ATTACHED TO MOM AND DAD YOUR WHOLE LIVES. AND NOT LIKE JOSH AND ANNA WHO RUN HOME FOR EVERY LITTLE THING. I MEAN GO OUT AND BE YOUR OWN PERSON WITHOUT MOM AND DAD TELLING YOU WHAT TO DO EVERY SECOND OF EVERY MINUTE OF YOUR LIFE

  19. This is to the confused people out there that think they can offer their terrible advice and think for one minute that their words is something that any of the Duggar kids would consider..I think not..They are in great hands!

  20. Congratulations Josiah! You are my favorite Duggar. Good luck in your future. :)

  21. do any of you think maybe the duggar kids actually like being home and with their parents? maybe you all have bad relationships with your parents or your own children but some kids like being around their family. Not every high schooler needs college after. it does not guarantee a job after but it does promise loan bills and lots of them! I normally don't comment because of having a life and all but I check in occasionally to this site and cannot get over the hurtful comments towards a family you do not even know! and one you only are shown pieces of their lives and months of events all wrapped in a season with only a few episodes... focus on your own family and maybe you too will have children who want to come home and visit :)

I don't think the big girls do as much as we have credited them for. The way Jessa treated Grandma in the kitchen showed me she us over it at their home.

  22. What does Josiah want to do as a career? I would love to see en episode about what some of the older kids are thinking about doing as a career. I liked seeing what Jana and Jill have planned in healthcare and what Erin Bates is doing with her music. I would love to see what Josiah, Jessa, Jinger, John David and Joseph are just contemplating. Maybe they should shadow someone in the field they are curious in. Make it a two-parter!! :)

  24. Commenter # 18, I hope that your life is more fruitful than the Duggars to be making judgement calls on things you do not know are true. Just because they are a close knit family, and choose to value their time together does not mean that their children are not making their own decisions, or being "controlled" by their parents. Their parents have guided them into wise and accomplished young adults that are their own person and not a member of the herd, doing what everyone else does.

  25. Good luck in your future endeavors and may God bless you in whatever career you choose.

  26. @AnonymousI agree. If Jim Bob and Michelle don't want to pay out of pocket their children could apply for scholarships. I would love to see one of the older kids attend a real college.

  27. Lily and Ellie are you going to post pics of Josiah's graduation? I would love to see more?

  28. My suggestion is to get as much education as you can. Education is never wasted, even if it doesn't help you get a better job. We should be continually trying to learn and educate ourselves. So don't stop with High school, go on to college! :)

  29. If you want to play music in the wilderness maybe choose a smaller instrument like a flute it will be much easier to carry.

  31. Josiah, congratulations. I remember graduating high school at 16 in a foreign land, at least to me, the USA. Though born in the USA, as a military brat I grew up overseas until my last year in high school. My father sent me back to the USA to graduate from an American military boarding school. The school was fine, but the only thing which kept me going with no family there or after graduation was my faith in God and His promise that He would not put us into any situation which we could not overcome with Him. That was 42 years ago. Throughout these many years, through military actions, multiple jobs and layoffs, illnesses, and other life experiences, God has always provided exactly what I needed at the exact right moment. I may have liked Him to come through a little sooner for my personal comfort, but I have always had the faith that God would provide, and He has. Never let this world dictate what you should believe. Stand by God's Word and His Promises and He will be with you always.

  32. Cammie,
Homeschools issue their own diplomas just likeprivate and public schools do.
Some homeschoolers use a program that issues a diploma and some create their own program of studies. Either way, most colleges and universities accept a homeschool diploma. A GED is for people who do not complete high school.

  33. Congratulations Josiah! Never stop learning..

  34. Don't feel obliged to go by exactly the same rules as your parents. Have some fun. Live. Enjoy your life.

I think that Jim Bob and Michelle want their children to have a godly perspective on life. If they went to a community college, they would be influenced by the very things they don't want. Some may argue that they are adults. They are, but they also still live under their parents' roof. As long as they do that, they have to obey their rules. I'm pretty sure its the kids own choice to stay or move out though. I'm sure their parents wouldn't force them to stay.

  36. Congratulations Josiah!

My advice to you would be to decide what career you would like to have, and then attend a local college to help you prepare for your career.

  38. @Cammie

Please realize that as homeschooler's parent the parent writes the child's dipolma. You are the teacher and the principal. Many families will have the teacher as the mother and the father as the principal as the father is the head of our household. You can order a fancy looking dipolma if that is what you wish just like you can order a class ring or school jacket if you wish. You as the teacher of the child makes the child's highschool transcripts and grades. Yes, ALL colleges except these and most of the time colleges are begging homeschoolers to their school.

  39. @ Anonymous 25----if the Duggar children are NOT controlled by their parents, why hasn't any of them either gone to a non-internet college or moved out on their own???

  40. Continue to love Hod and hope you find a wonderful girl

  41. @AnonymousThanks for your answer. I was curious since Josh talks about getting a GED but I hadn't heard it mentioned for the latest grads. Maybe the Duggars were using a different homeschooling program for Josh?

  42. Believe me your parents are really special people. Stay close in your heart to them and be willing to learn from them. Don't be a rebel against them, be an imitator.

  43. @ Anonymous 40:
Did you ever think that they might LIKE living at home? Maybe they don't WANT to go to a non-internet college? Really, have you talked with one of them about it? I want to hear about that!

If the Duggar parents are anything like my own, I'm sure they're anything but dictators. They love their children, and want whats best for them, although when it comes down to it, initially, the choice is the child's. They of course, give godly council where council is due, but in the end, it's the child's decision. :)

  46. A GED is not for people who do not complete HS only! My kids got GED's to make a country change move easier as the country we are moving to recognizes a GED as an equal to a HS diploma. They both had 3.2 GPA's upon graduation and each completed their education a year early and were already using college textbooks in our homeschool! Only the USA seems to looks down on the GED as a lesser form of diploma. My kids were taking their tests with people much older who still had not passed the GED so it isn't as easy as many thing and they had no special prep because they were too young to take prep classes!

Khloe Kardashian famously said "I enrolled myself in homeschool and graduated with honors". If I homeschooled my children they would graduate with honors too. A student in a class of 400 of his peers graduating with honors is much more impressive and we all know that.
If private schools got $30, 000 for every kid that couldn't cut it in public school, no wait, they do!

  49. I think it is absolutely pathetic that these children are not given the opportunity to attend college. They seem bright and capable, yet their parents (especially their father) are holding them back from reaching their true potential. Very sad indeed that he feels the need to control his wife and children in the way he does.

  51. My husband and I are Christians and we both attended private Christian Schools from kindergarten through college and feel very blessed that we were given such a wonderful Christ-centered education. Our church, home and school created a "chord of three strands that is not easily broken." We also raised our now adult and married children in the same way - no regrets! My husband has two sisters who home schooled. Their children are socially awkward and quite immature. We have noticed that most of their circle of home schooled friends are also so immature compared to nonhomeschooled children. They do not seem to to able to think for themselves, but are very caught up in following rules that have been indoctrinated into them by their parents since childhood. They are so protected that it actually stunts their ability to mature and often pick up their parent's weaknesses. Kids need to make some mistakes on their own in order to learn from them. They also had difficulty getting into college because they could not pass the entrance exams or score well on SAT's. They attended community college (only college they could get in to) and took 3 1/2 years to complete a 2 year program. In our state, when students graduate from community college, they are automatically accepted into the state university - no matter what their GPA is. This was the only way these homeschoolers could get into a 4 year college. Despite the comment mentioned above, all colleges are NOT "begging" homeschoolers to go to their school. My children said that they could easily pick out the homeschoolers in college - they were the wild and immature ones or the socially awkward ones.

  53. The same advice I give any high school grad -- Proverbs 3:5,6. And "lean not on your own understanding" can also mean to lean not on your parents' understanding and their ways of doing things. Pray for God's wisdom about the course your own life should take now that you are an adult and follow His voice.
