Michelle Duggar: "Women Need to Be Informed"

On Monday, the Duggars kicked off their support for the Tennessee Abortion Amendment at Cornerstone Church in Madison, Tennessee, a neighborhood in northeast Nashville. The event drew hundreds of fans and supporters of Amendment 1.

  1. Why does Michelle believe only women need to be informed? It takes two to create a baby and it can take two to make a decision to terminate the baby.

  3. So she is basically informing women that they are about to have their rights stolen... I had no idea she was pro-choice! So am I! I love it!

  4. In all due respect, I think there is a whole lot these "women need to be informed about," however, I refuse to traipse my family all across America living out of a bus in order to inform them. I will rely on my computer and keep my family's life stable, predictable, and secure, thank you.

  8. I am so proud of the Duggars and their Godly stand on issues - especially on the rights of the unborn! I just wonder how long it will be until TLC starts putting pressure on them to stop being so vocal on these issues or else be canceled. Because we all know we all have rights and free speech EXCEPT if you happen to be conservative and Christian!

  9. Michelle is right; women need to be informed; but, so do men. Maybe, that's where JimBob could pipe up and stress the importance of the father's responsibility! A woman does not become pregnant on her own!!! How about if the Duggars, also, supported birth control as a tool to eliminate a percentage of abortions. Sadly, there are pregnancies from horrible situations and those, need to be acknowledged and answered. I like someone to pose the question to them: "heaven forbid: but, what if one of your daughters/daughter-in-law became pregnant from a rape? What would your stance be under those ugly, scary circumstances?

    1. The reason they don't condone birth control is because the invention of it is where trouble began. It erased responsibility for the sexual act. Once birth control became widely accepted in our society, people could do what they wanted when they wanted. Premarital sex, marital infidelity rose. Eventually these things also became more normal and people lost their sense of right and wrong. With no boundaries and a rise in sexual promiscuity came a huge increase in out-of-wedlock pregnancies, abortions, venereal diseases and failed marriages due to infidelity. All because we didn't use our gift of sexuality as God instructed us to through his Holy Word, within the sanctity of marriage, with openness to children raised in the ways of The Lord, with great respect for ones spouse. Does this mean we should all have 19 children? We are not all made for that, not to mention spiritually disciplined for it as the Duggars. I respect them greatly and know I am not as strong. Sometimes even married couples need to abstain if they have good reason: financial, health, emotional for instance. This is where natural family planning fits in. Learning when a woman's body is fertile or not. It is actually very simple and has even been taught to some 3rd world women who don't have access to birth control and has had a 97% effectiveness rate. So sometimes even married couples may have to say no to sex. Now that is something our society does not want to do or hear. We want what we want and we want it now! Families that pray together have a very low divorce rate and so do families that live according to God's plan when it comes to sexual intimacy. As far as rape goes, it is an awful, intrusive crime. A woman is violently victimized. But when she chooses to abort rather than give life and possibly allow adoption, hasn't she just violently victimized her own child? Pro-choicers never talk about how abortion affects women, even after rape. Many of these women wake up one day realizing they have ended the life of their own child. They suffer greatly over this choice. Many are plagued with depression which can lead to a life of other bad choices as they try to numb their pain. Prolifers understand and offer counseling and teach about God's mercy and forgiveness to help them heal. Even someone who has been raped can feel this since of guilt and remorse. Is it an easy choice to give birth under any unplanned pregnancy? I'm sure not usually as I was in this circumstance when I was young. But I'm so glad I chose life!! It is filled with so much more joy to have made that decision whether one chooses to keep a child or allow adoption. As far as the Duggars speaking to men as well, they have spoken together to both men and women. Apparently thus was a women's conference. Why would you expect!?

  12. The contraceptive mentality has led to the abortive mentality. It is all an issue of choice and control and if one method goes wrong or isn't used then another will be used. This isn't the case for all women but it sadly is for many.

  13. I love this family. I love how they are passionate about their beliefs. That being said, it's a choice. Not yours, obviously, but it's still a choice. That is all.

  14. Ahhhhh man. I used to love watching this show, but the political stuff just turns my stomach. I would be completely fine (In America you are given the freedom to believe whatever you choose) if they didn't include the little ones who don't really need to be around any of the negativeness that politics bring out. I'm very dissapointed in that.

  15. God bless the Duggars and all those babies that don't have a voice yet! Interesting how many will stand up for issues like "saving the environment", "bullying", and all those sad commercials about adopting a dog or cat before it gets euthanized, BUT people get in such an uproar when others stand up for human life. Are not babies something to be protected? Loved? Nurtured? What do you with your children? They aren't meant to be aimlessly murdered because they become an inconvenience or a financial burden or a secret needed to be hidden. I pray for all the mothers out there who have had abortions... I know some personally and they are just overridden with guilt and despair from the decision they made. It takes the Lord to truly set them free. Yes, women do need someone to step in and inform them of all aspects of what their decision will entail. They need support and so do the unborn babies who cannot defend themselves.

  16. The most effective way to stop abortions is to have honest sexual education not just abstinence-only, and easy access to contraceptives for EVERYONE.

  17. @SuzanneThank you for sharing that viewpoint. Wish the Duggars would answer the tough questions about their stance on abortion-like what happened in your example.

  18. I wholeheartedly get that the Duggars have prolife passions and respect them for it. I also don't think that the vast majority of women make the decision lightly. There is something in their life that makes carrying a baby a worse option at least in their minds than having an abortion. I really don't see making abortions illegal as getting women to stop having them. They will just also be putting their own lives at risk and probably have them later in pregnancy. I see both helping people to not have unplanned pregnancies and doing things to help make those situations that an abortion seems better than better as more likely to cut the abortion rate.

  19. Interesting. I am a person who chose to terminate my pregnancy after rape 25 years ago and I have NO regrets about it. I was too young. Since then, I have had 4 beautiful gifts from God and I firmly believe He is powerful enough to ensure that "all things work together for them that love the Lord, for those called according to His purpose". JMHO....

  20. Please post this because I think it is the opinion many share. I found it really insulting for the Duggar's to say "women need to be informed." Why didn't they say "men and women need to be informed" or "men need to be informed"? One doesn't make a baby with just a woman there! I would describe myself as a non-conservative Republican and also as a non-liberal Democrat. And why the labels anyway--why do I have to be conservative to be a Republican and why do I have to be liberal to be a Democrat? I am so tired of all this government fighting between these two parties. It seems like both sides have forgotten the American people they are supposed to serve. I say make it a mandatory requirement in the next election to boot ALL of them and start fresh. Just because the Duggar's believe it doesn't make it so. Please remember this is just one family and just one view of all the many, many, many millions of families in America. God spoke out again idolization of oneself or of others. And stop telling me what the problem is. Tell me the solution.

  21. When Jim Bob and Michelle can bring to the table experience with incest, rape, and unwanted pregnancy, they can speak to me...maybe. I can bring to them experience that it is most unhealthy to encourage family discussions beginning at 11:00 p.m. and continuing until 2:00 a.m. when all should be getting up the next day to attend school, go to jobs, or whatever they need to be doing. These children are brought up with no regular schedule, no regular place to put their heads on a pillow at night, and no regular anything. I wonder which one of the girls has to get up with a crying baby at 4:00 a.m. after these midnight marathons? It ain't Michelle.

  22. To the Anonymous poster that said she terminated her pregnancy after rape. God bless you and I sent up a prayer just now. You made a decision that was right for you. God is powerful enough that He stands behind you in your decision. To me nobody has any right whatsoever to criticize you for what you decided. Your decision was between you and your Maker. You do not need the Duggars approval or anyone's approval for that matter. You did the right thing for yourself and don't ever go back there and doubt yourself. God loves you.

  27. I pray that in all that you do, as a family and for each of your children, that you will be able to ignore those who will ridicule the life you live. You are a light in this dark nation and I have been sooooo blessed by you and your family. I love watching your show. You are such an encouragement to those of us who are rearing our kids. I love your patience and wisdom. I tell my husband, "If they can do right and have the patience for 19 kids, certainly we should strive to do our best with our three." :) You are raising your children right. Don't let anybody bring you down with their opinions. Man's opinion does not matter. God is the one to please; and your children are wise to wait on God for the right spouses. I wasn't married until I was almost 26. All of my friends were married. I had gone to college and not met the right man yet. But I also didn't want to just settle on any man that came along, although I had several I could have married. Anybody can get married. Waiting for the right man is worth the wait. My husband is perfect for me: he was financially stable and ready to support me, he is a leader, he is a wonderful father, he is what I needed and I am the same for him. He was God's choice. Not everybody has the same road to marriage, the same timing or experience. Enjoy God's steps for you along the way and use that time for Him.

  28. Michelle & Jim Bob, Thank you SO Much for Standing for Life in Tennessee! And for supporting Amendment 1, which will be on the TN ballot in 2014. We are educating citizens in Tennessee of why they need to vote YES on Amendment 1 and appreciate all the help we can get! In 2000, our state Supreme Court decided in favor of Planned Parenthood, and overturned several common sense laws such as informed consent and short waiting periods. Since then, Tennessee has become an Abortion Destination! We have the highest abortion rate compared to our surrounding states, because our laws are so lenient. You can help save babies by sharing information about Amendment 1 with your friends in Tennessee.

    1. Wow, you honestly don't believe people will get abortions REGARDLESS of laws? Making the laws won't stop anything. It will simply force people to seek out more dangerous methods and usually further along in the pregnancy. The statistics are out there dear.

  29. When Michelle is talking about being informed, she's elaborating on what Jim Bob said just before her, on women giving informed consent. Informed consent is telling the doctors, "Yes, this is what I want to do, and I understand every detail of what getting this abortion means." This is the Duggars telling women to understand how an abortion is physically administered, which is what, I assume, the law they're promoting is about. It's common knowledge that abortions terminate pregnancies. It is not common knowledge as to what exactly goes down in that doctor's office. That is where women need to be aware.

"Natural birth control" does NOT have a 97% success rate. While it is helpful to attempt to track a woman's fertility cycle whether one is trying to start a family, or avoid getting pregnant - 97% is not correct -
