Duggars and the Media

Q: What types of media do you allow your kids to watch?

A: Michelle Duggar: "Whatever is good, whatever is true, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is noble. We try to pick things that are going to encourage good character."

"Television and video games and computer, I mean, they can all be great resources, but too much of anything is bad. We have been around different things, but just limited; everything is limited," explains Jessa. The Duggars do use the internet, but it's all protected. As for TV, they don't have cable, but they watch movies and shows on DVD. Two months ago, the Duggars voiced characters for "The Life at the Pond," one of their favorite shows. Click here to find out how you can purchase that episode ("19,000 Frogs and Counting.") Jim Bob and Michelle work hard to expose their kids to positive media and to limit negative influences.
"You are not going to put garbage in your mouth, so don't put it in your mind" says Michelle.

What is your view on today's media?

  1. Michelle hit the nail on the head. : )

Thanks for your sweet blog, we so enjoy the Duggar family, they are a huge support to our famkily.

    Bless you!

  2. I love the Duggars. They are one great family. We don't have a TV in our home never have never will. Was not raised on one either. To much garbage and trash on the Tv and the commercials aren't any better.

  3. You really do have to weed out a lot of inappropriate things to find the good in the media. I believe that things that are either informative, such as documentaries, or make you think are good. But, at the same time, you must be sure that things are age appropriate. I love the television show MASH for both the informative and make-me-think reasons, but at the same time, I wouldn't want an eight year old watching it. Just like you probably wouldn't show a documentary on the Vietnam War to a five year old, but watching it with your teens and talking about it might be a good familiy activity.

  4. Yes, I totally agree Granmagene..."the commercials aren't any better either" SO TRUE!!! My Husband and I don't have a t.v in our home neither. I love the Duggars and they are such a great and wonderful family :)
As for age group my take on it that is... if we aren't going to allow out children to watch it because we know it's inappropriate for them and could negativity influence them...they are just like us (human)...we are know different as adults so, I don't believe we should watch that either because we can also be negativity influenced as well. "Everything is permissible"--but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"--but not everything is constructive. - (1 Corinthians 10:23)

  5. I'm retired and watch a lot of TV, we have cable with most of the extras. I love watching Animal Planet, National Geography, NatGeoWild, Both History channels, naturally TLC, and so on. I have learned a great deal from these shows, and yes, most of them would be suitable for most children. I raised 6 fine and productive children, have 13 grandchildren and now 3 great grandchildren so I think I am a pretty good judge of that. Of course I believe the earth is much, much older than 6,000 years so I am in no danger of being 'defrauded' by these shows. Those without TV's miss some great and interesting shows! Yes, I too enjoy the Duggars, but that doesn't mean I think they are experts. In fact, they don't think they are experts!!

  6. Why such an all or nothing approach? G-d gave us brains to pick right and wrong. TV is a good lesson in self-control.I guess the Duggars never thought of this. When we do have TV, I never watch but certain things. It helps the kids make informed decisions about right or wrong. thats not to say use it as a babysitter or what not but as an occasional teaching tool. Not everything is evil either. You cant keep your head buried in the sand.
