Recap: "The Big Question"

Tonight on 19 Kids and Counting, "The Big Question"...
  • Jim Bob, Jill, and Derick browse through a busy shopping district in Nepal to buy souvenirs. "Everybody's always trying to sell you something," says Jill
  • While buying purses for Jill's sisters, Jim Bob pulls his daughter aside and asks an important question: "How do you think it's going with you-know-who over there?" Jill says she thinks it's going well and that she has really enjoyed getting to know Derick in person.
  • When Jill asks Jim Bob what he thinks of her potential suitor, Jim Bob's answer is vague, although he has already given Derick permission to ask Jill to begin a courtship. "I like him," said Jim Bob. "I think your mom will really like him.
  • Meanwhile, Dericks slips away to buy a heart necklace.
  • Derick and the Duggars get a lift to the Monkey Temple in a tuk-tuk, a three-wheeled taxi. The ride only costs 20 cents. Jim Bob jokes that if Derick and Jill's relationship continues to progress, they might "have a lot of monkeys" one day.
  • Jill, a student midwife, volunteers at a birthing center in Kathmandu, Nepal. She examines a woman who is 36 weeks pregnant and is hearing her baby's heartbeat for the first time. Jill hopes to work as a missionary someday and provide medical care to women and babies.
  • Meanwhile, Jim Bob conquers his fear and gets a traditional Nepali shave with Derick.
  • Does Jill prefer seeing Derick with or without a beard? She says he looks good both ways but that she likes a little facial hair.
  • Back home in Arkansas, James teaches Michelle how to use a slingshot, and Jinger shows Joy-Anna how to make bread. Joy plans to make bread for the family once a week, which used to be Jinger's jurisdiction.
  • Over video conferencing, the three travelers catch up with Michelle and a few of the Duggar girls. When Derick asks Jill's family if there is anything he should know about her, Jessa chimes in: "She is one of the more emotional ones in the family. She's very sympathetic, very caring."
  • The next day, just as Jim Bob and Jill are loading their bags into a taxi and heading for the airport, Derick pulls Jill aside. "If it's alright with you, I'm interested in starting an official courtship," he says. How does Jill respond? "Yeah, that would be awesome. Totally."
  • Derick presents his girlfriend with a heart necklace made of emerald, Jill's birthstone.
  • "Your whole life, we've prayed for a godly man for you, and we had to come 8,000 miles to find him, but here he is," Jim Bob says to his daughter. "You're a great young man," he tells Derick. "God bless your work."
  • Derick looks forward to meeting the rest of the Duggars when he returns home to Arkansas in two-and-a-half months.
Here's a picture of the heart necklace that Derick gave to Jill:

  1. You said that Jessa said Jill was carrying instead of caring. I also believe Kathmandu has a silent 'h' in it. :)

  3. Anyone else caught the part when Jill reached out of the window to hold Derick's hand as she was leaving in the taxi? So very sweet. Love watching God bring these two together. A dear couple <3

  4. What a sweet show. Jim Bob is such a dedicated father and I was struck by what a truly special time this had to have been for JB and Jill to spend this time together I also appreciated the way the show Is highlighting some of the one on one time that Michelle spends with her children. Very sweet. I loved the conference call with Michelle and all of the sisters and the great scene where Jinger was teaching Joy how to bake bread. All of the shows have been wonderful this season, it will be over all too soon with those pesky short seasons TLC is so fond of . Derick and Jill are delightful.

  9. I loved the show tonight. It was sweet when Jim Bob wiped the corner of Derrick's eyes in the barber shop. It was hilarious when Jim Bob said seeing all the monkey's running around made him miss Michelle and the kids. Lol my favorite part was when Derrick surprised her at the end. It really seemed like she didn't see it coming. Can't wait for next week!

Maybe! :) That would be pretty cool! However, I know that Jinger has mentioned that she's been taking over a lot of stuff that Jessa used to do, so it might just be she' said little too busy to bake the bread. I hope it isn't just that, though. :)

  19. When Jill went to Nepal she looked very thin. In this picture she looks like she has gained weight around the middle. I guess she is just eating very well, if it was not the Duggars I would really wonder about the weight gain.

  20. Jill and Derick, what sweet human beings. Everytime I see Jill smile, I think what a sweet young lady she is. Derick, likewise, seems to be a genuinely good person. Their joy in having found each other is apparent. God bless them.

  21. The hand grasp between Jill and Derick, as she and Jim Bob departed, touched my heart. It's truly a lovestory. Kudos to Jim Bob for looking out for his daughter by introducing her to Derick and then traveling to Nepal, with her, so they could finally meet Derick. He is a wonderful young man.

  24. Derick held her in suspense until she was about to cry when she was leaving. How romantic! I didn't think that the Duggars courting children held hands. Jill and Derick grabbed hands as the taxi pulled away.

  25. When are you going to announce Jill and Derick's wedding date? Several sources have said it is June 21st.

  26. Congratulations to Jill & Derrick! Such a lovely couple!

  27. What is the three leaf clover on Jessa's hand? Inst that symbolic of luck? If so Christians don't believe in luck or do they? Just wondering.... Awesome pics & Jill & Derrick are such a cute couple!

  30. beautiful episode. I am more impressed with Jill every day. I love that she went to the birthing center and helped AND learned. She is very respectful of people and their traditions, never condescending. Derrick seems to have that quality too. Really a lover of humanity - maybe I'm exaggerating it but they seem very much like global citizens that will truly do Christ's work on earth. Some may be critical of JB arranging this relationship, but it just goes to show how well he knows his daughter's heart and truly does want the best for her.

  31. THE SYMBOL is a four leaf clover because that was taken on St. Patricks day! Do some deductive reasoning! They posted that picture a while ago on St Patrick's day and we didn't know that that was the necklace Derick gave to Jill, she is holding the necklace because it has emeralds in it; which are green. And jessa has drawn the clover on her hand so she won't get "pinched" come on now do some thinking before you comment!
