Duggar/Swanson Wedding Details

Josiah Duggar and Lauren Swanson wedding
Josiah Duggar and Lauren Swanson have been Mr. and Mrs. for almost two weeks. The details of their Northwest Arkansas wedding are in this week's issue of PEOPLE Magazine, on newsstands now.

Following in the footsteps of Josiah's six married siblings, the couple saved their first kiss for the altar. Lauren describes the moment as "explosive and wonderful," calling it "an early Fourth of July."

The new bride is the first in her family to tie the knot. She tells PEOPLE: "My parents encouraged me to be Josiah’s biggest fan, offer him support and encouragement. Think the best, never assume the worst. Be his biggest cheerleader."

To see photos of Lauren's hair and the back of her dress, Josiah's face when his wife-to-be walked into the church, and the getaway car covered in colored paper, visit PEOPLE.com.

  1. I don't buy People magazine. I enjoy reading this blob and love the photos. Looking forward to watch Josiah and Lauren's wedding on Counting On. Whenever TLC shows the wedding, it will be new to me. Thank you TLC for keeping Counting On, on television...Jane

    1. I already saw the mag. It was half a page with 3 pics that we already saw online with 3 quotes that are already on the online articles, so you didn’t miss out

    4. I don’t see anything wrong with giving a magazine exclusive rights to first photos. The couple makes some cash 💰 and people without online access get to see them, yes there are still some who don’t have online access.

  2. the pictures are adorable and show a fun, expressive side of Josiah. The back of her hair was so pretty but you couldn't really tell it because the veil hid it. Wish she had displayed the back of her hair more instead of the veil because it just looked messy In previous pictures.

    1. I agree! If you’re going to decorate the back of your hair then it should show, otherwise make the front look nice

  3. Her hair was so pretty in the back and her dress absolutely gorgeous. Can’t wait to see the ceremony on Counting On.

  4. Beautiful dress. She's so pretty. But being Josiah's "fan" sort of negates the idea of marriage being a partnership. Oh well we'll see how that works.

    1. Not really. Couples should always be each others biggest fan.

      Delete
    2. Biggest fan? How about biggest love instead.

      Delete
    3. Always have his back, always be on his side, always speak positively about him to others, be his biggest fan. All these statements mean the same thing, they aren’t talking about the kind of fan that watches him on tv.

      Delete
    4. Being a fan is kind of a blind adoration, which doesn't sound good to me. To support each other is good and necessary, but that doesn't mean not being critical when needed.
Also, it has to be the same on both sides!

      Delete
    5. You got it, 12:47. There are times when you have to say no to a spouse or tell them something is not a good idea. If they don't hear it from you, the message will be harsher when it eventually comes from someone else, and the consequences more.

      Delete
    6. Being a fan is NOT the same as blind adoration, at least in the sports context. Most devoted fans of sports teams are quite vocal at expressing criticism of the players, coaches, or front office staff for making mistakes, being lazy, etc.

But a fan of a sports team would never consider dropping the team completely even if they are in last place in the division, have traded away all their best players, etc. They would certainly not switch their allegiance to another team. And ideally in marriage that is also the case.

    1. Your advice is strange! Good thing that's not what her parents said. :)

      Delete
    2. Where did you read “do anything your husband wants”?

      Delete
    3. That's NOT what they said.

      Delete
    4. "Be a fan of your husband" is indeed something Lauren's parents told her, more or less, but since when does that mean "do anything he wants"? I doubt the parents meant "if Josiah wants you to go rob a bank, then it's your wifely duty to do what he wants." I didn't get that implication at all.

      Delete
    5. What she means is be encouragement to her husband and not make mountains out of mole hills. She never said to do anything he wants.

      Delete
    6. @8:49: "Be an encourager" is Biblical, but that's not what they said, either. ❤

      Delete
    7. It's not my job to be my husband's "fan", to act as though everything he does is right before others, or "always speak positively about him to others"- that's deceptive. Biblically, I will love and encourage him. I will gently and respectfully confront him, in love, when he is wrong as the Bible instructs- as I expect him to do with me. I will practice "doing him good, not harm, all the days of my life"- as I expect him to do with me. I will not act as though he is a king and somehow beyond reproach- that's not Biblical. Nor would I marry a man whose self-esteem is so fragile that he would need my constant adoring fan-worship. That's not the Biblical picture of maturity or mature love.

  13. Where I live, and probably in a lot of states, it's illegal to drive with anything blocking your windows. I hope that was just for the filming and they went no further than 100 feet down the driveway before stopping and removing all that ridiculous stuff from the car, or switching to another car. You'd leave litter everywhere if you tried to drive that car, and that's illegal, too.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You know, I've seen decorated getaway cars at weddings for decades, and not once have I ever heard anyone say that it was illegal. You've managed to come up with a unique comment that I've never heard before! Congratulations.

      Delete
    2. I think it's illegal in most if not all the states. I checked the California Vehicle Code, and it says...

      (1) A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows.

      (2) A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied in or upon the vehicle that obstructs or reduces the driver’s clear view through the windshield or side windows.

I've seen people in other states get pulled over on those cop shows for obstructed views, too. You'd think Constable John David would be aware of the motor vehicle laws. Maybe laws don't apply to you when you're being filmed for TV?

      Delete
    3. 12:10- Decorations are one thing, but completely covering up windows is a safety issue and yes, a violation. We can only assume they did the right thing and took all those post-it notes off before they went very far.

      Delete
    4. The post-its cover the back and side windows. Super creative, but doesn't allow for safe driving. They also were falling off the car when Josiah opened the door, many more would have flown off while they were driving. You can have fun decorating the getaway car without inadvertently trashing the roads.

      Delete
    5. I have to agree. I hope they cleared the car before driving. Definitely dangerous.

      Delete
    6. It is illegal and you can get in big problems. But they are on tv

      Delete
    7. It is illegal. That was the first thing I thought of when I saw it. It would make a mess on the streets, too. Hopefully they didn't go any further than the parking lot in that, and it was all done for the cameras.

      Delete
    8. Hey anonymous 12:10pm, your comment is super rude. The OP is correct, it’s illegal in many areas, including outside the US. Just because you’ve never read or heard that in your “decades”, doesn’t mean it isn’t factual. Stop being an internet troll and play nice.

      Delete
    9. Seriously 4:40? You really thought they would drive with the windows blocked? I agree with 12:10. Congratulations!😑

      Delete
    10. If some of those not so sticky post it’s fly off while they are driving, they can get a citation for littering. Because littering is illegal. It happened to someone I know. They had cans tied to their bumper as part of getaway car decor. The cans fell off and they were given a ticket by a policeman who saw it happen.

      Delete
    11. 5:51, your comment about me (12:10) made me laugh. Thank you for not being "super rude" to me. :)

    13. I think all of you who worried about this rather than enjoying the fun of the moment are critical trolls. The Duggars have never seemed irresponsible and I’m sure did the right thing once off camera....it was a fun moment not ment to fire up the legal experts.

    2. It’s not Meghan Markle any more it’s the duchess of Sussex. Do you call Jessa seewald Jessa duggar any more?

      Delete
    3. 11:04, media outlets identify Jessa as Jessa Duggar Seewald or simply Jessa Duggar because people know the Duggar name. I've even seen Derick referred to as Jill Duggar's husband. Even after years of being married, Catherine the Duchess of Cambridge is still called Kate Middleton.

      Delete
    4. On the contrary, when we first caught a glimpse of the royal wedding gown, it was indeed worn by Meghan Markle. Only after the ceremony would her title be considered applicable, and we can't presume she was able to legally change her name whilst also getting married.

      Delete
    5. @11:04. Yes, the correct name is HRH Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex. I hate it when people seem to think it is OK to call either of the two young Duchesses by their maiden names. It is so disrespectful. But @3:04, I agree the Duchess's dress was a prefect fit, especially when you consider that she had to knell, cutesy, sit for a long time in the dress. It could not be too tight as to be uncomfortable.

      Delete
    6. Can we please keep the faux-princess MM out of it? We are a chosen people, God's royalty! ❤

      Delete
    7. Megan's dress was designed by a British designer working for the French fashion house Givenchy. You cannot compare it to an off-the-rack dress that Lauren chose from an Arkansas bridal salon. If you saw the two dresses hanging side by side, you'd know immediately which one was couture. The fabric, the cut, the finish would give it away. I guarantee you Meghan's gown was flawless inside and out.

I know someone who helped with the making of several of Megan's mother's dresses for that weekend's events. I've seen the samples. I've held the fabric. Oscar de la Renta. As good as it gets.

    8. @10:39. She is of course not a princess. She is a Duchess, my marriage.

The Royal family serve very important role in GB and in the Commonwealth.

@4:15, the correct term is the 'former' Meghan Markle. Referring to her in the present tense, you use her name now. You do not call Mrs. Trump by her maiden name, even when talking about her wedding dress?

      Delete
    9. Her name is still Meghan. Add Markle and everyone on a chat blog instantly knows exactly which Meghan you're referring to.

  26. What is that...thing...on the back of her dress? It doesn't look like it belongs there at all. It looks like an afterthought. It's nowhere near the style of the rest of the dress.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's totally out of sync with the simplicity of the rest of the dress! I was surprised to see it there. If anything, there could have been tucks or a bow in the back for some interest, not a huge beady sparkly applique.

      Delete
    2. That “thing” is known as beading or embellishment :) you may also be referring to the “thing” known as her hairstyle or possibly her veil.

      Delete
    3. Is it a piece of her mom's wedding dress? The Duggar girls have started that tradition.

      Delete
    4. Perhaps it was see-through in the back and she had it altered. I absolutely loved Lauren's dress! It is hard to find short sleeve wedding dresses.

      Delete
    5. What picture are you all referencing? I didn't see one that showed the back of her dress.

      Delete
    6. It does look a little sheer in the back. You can see, even with modest alterations, the original design had a very low-cut back.

      Delete
    7. There were pics on People's website. It does look like they sewed it on there to cover up her back. I doubt the dress designer added that to the original dress. It's a mismatch.

      Delete
    3. TLC stuck with the family when many networks would have cut ties with them. The Duggars have continued a working relationship and obviously view the network as a decent as they have been on TLC for over 13 years. Not giving Counting On ratings actively hurts the Duggars and their ability to continue their show.

  33. I am not my husband's "cheerleader." He is responsible for his own behavior and doesn't expect or require cheers for what he does (who does?). If I see him doing something I think is wrong, I'm allowed to speak up and point that out. I don't have to be his "biggest fan" or cheerlead him. That is a starry-eyed comment by a very young bride who has had no experience with men or marriage.

    1. July 14 @12:41 pm, All it means is that you support and appreciate him. Encouragemnet is a wonderful thing. TBH, your comment sounds very negative.

    2. You're married??

      Delete
    3. I don't see anything wrong with being starry-eyed towards your spouse.

      Delete
    4. I disagree with you - I have been married nearly 40 years and my parents 65! Being a cheerleader to your husband means encouraging him, which is what men desire from their wives. An encouraging wife is a blessing to her husband and her children. Try it for 2 weeks and see what kind of a difference it makes. It certainly doesn't make you "less".

      Delete
    5. I have to respectfully disagree. While it’s possible to trivialize the advice into “always wear a smile and never say anything bad,” I don’t think that’s what it means at all. In Ephesians 5, husbands are told to love their wives and wives are told to respect their husbands. Men and women are different and this addresses a fundmental difference. Women need to feel loved (hence the wise advice to serve your wife in love), and men need to know they are respected by their wives (hence the wise advice to be his biggest fan). A man can slay dragons all day and not bat an eye, but to feel his wife is disappointed in him is heartbreaking. To feel she does not respect him is debilitating. This is the Scriptural, Godly core and balance to a healthy marriage. This does not mean you cannot offer advise on a different way to do something or bring up an area of improvement, but a man should always know his wife is on his side if that conversation happens. —TR

      Delete
    6. I am a woman and I need both love and respect.

      Delete
    7. Well I have to agree with OP. A woman doesn't need to spend her married life cheering on a man. The relationship should be equal, not one person leading and the other cheering. Is Lauren going to get her cheers and her fan?

      Delete
    8. 7:38- I think everyone, regardless of gender, need to be shown respect, love and encouragment. These are fundamental human needs and a total package. My husband and I have always made an effort to support each other in all these ways.

      Delete
    9. Anon at 738AM: I know this "men need respect, women need love" idea is very popular in "complementarian" circles.

But while I cannot speak for men, THIS woman would NOT want to marry a man who does not respect me. How can anyone really love a person (as opposed to, say, a pet dog) without respecting them?

Of course a man should always know his wife is on his side. But doesn't that go both ways? Shouldn't a woman should always know her husband is on HER side? Is it OK for a husband to critique the wife in a way that makes her think he is NOT on her side?

If I had to choose between a man who respects but doesn't love me, or a man who loves but doesn't respect me, then I'd just rather stay single, thank you very much.

      Delete
    10. 11:08 No one said women and men don’t both need both love and respect. Love is more important to women and respect is more important to men. God who created men and women put that in His Word to help us better understand each other. As someone who has been married almost thirty years, I can attest to the fact that these things are true. I try to always encourage my husband and let him know he is wonderful and my best friend. He in turn does the same for me and let’s me know I am truly loved. He tells people we are still on our honeymoon.

      Delete
    11. 11:13- Your second sentence is a very broad generality. It may be true in your relationship, but you simply cannot speak for everyone. I've been married for 30 years also and think love and respect go hand-in-hand. If respect isn't there, neither is love.

      Delete
    3. 2:12 You don’t know that. What if they are close to one person in a large family? They can’t just invite the one and exclude the rest of the family. They know a lot of people with large families. Also people get their feelings hurt if they were invited to one wedding but not the next. Most people I know also invite everyone they go to church with as well which includes adults and children.

It really doesn’t matter who we would invite. It is their weddings, and they get to choose.

  40. I can't wait to see more pictures! I loved Lauren's wedding dress. It looks elegant and classic. Perhaps it was very hot and humid that day and that made some of her curls relax. Their eyes are sparkling and look very sweet together.

    1. Yes, it was very hot and humid that day! She was a beautiful bride, though.

  41. Why no photos with the other members of the bridal party? We’re none taken?

  42. I'd love to see pictures of them with their wedding party. I feel like we got those pictures from other weddings, but not this time.

    1. I had to search for it too as didn't get front page coverage or listed in table of contents. It's just 1 page with 3 pictures & captions.

    2. Anon @ 4:49 The Duggars are no longer the big draw they once were. Its been a very long time since they had a magazine cover.

  44. Josiah and Lauren looked great, but having to drive away in a car that would be shedding post it notes was a bad idea. Did the ones who "decorated" the car with the notes go along behind the car and clean up the litter they caused?

  45. I think her dress is really beautiful! It's much more my style than the princess gowns some of the other girls have chosen.

I would love to hear from the Duggars about how they work through difficulties or disagreements in marriage. I know they work hard not to "badmouth" one another, and I think that is admirable. But I honestly think it would be helpful for viewers to see the Duggars admit that, like every married couple, there are sometimes problems.

Discussing (with specifics) how they work together to compromise or find solutions could be really uplifting. I think many people look to these marriages and only see the rosy, happy parts, but I think it's important to know that the Duggars are normal people who sometimes disagree, and that's okay.

    1. I agree. There is no such thing as a perfect marriage and anyone who says they have a perfect marriage is not being truthful.

    2. There is no doubt issues that come up in their marriages just like in our marriages and then throw in the fact that their husbands don't have regular jobs and are pretty much always home, and you have a recipe for some major issues. I would be saying it O was them, "I love you hun but you really need to get a job, it would help me and would be a good example to our children". Oh yeah, that would be hard on a marriage to constantly be together.

  46. The first kiss isn't always super.. rig ht? Anyone else with me? Kind of makes me feel like something was wrong with us to always hear from the Duggars how great the first kiss was.

    1. Nothing wrong with you! The couples don't have any prior kisses to compare their first kiss to and are put in a situation where they have to say how wonderful it was. They also say it within minutes or a few days of marriage. It would be insulting if one person immediately said it was wonderful and the other said it wasn't great and a little awkward, especially, as they are trying to get to know each other physically.

She's not a Duggar, but Erin Bates Paine recently said that the first kiss wasn't the best ever. While Chad said it was perfect, Erin said it got better over time with practice. She said it diplomatically and in a way that wasn't insulting to Chad. Still, Chad looked surprised that she said that. I thought it was refreshingly honest.

    2. Well it’s not like they have anything to compare it to, so for them it’s probably great.

    3. They always get asked how it was. What do you expect them to say? When you wait and want to kiss for months, then the anticipation makes it wonderful even if the actual kiss needs some work.

    4. My first kiss with the man who became my husband was exciting but only because I had gum in my mouth and was afraid I'd swallow it and choke. It happened in his car at the curb. I'm sure my mom was watching out the front window of the house. How romantic, huh. It didn't matter - we're still together 45 yrs. later and that's what counts, not some fireworks kiss that we saved up til the altar.
