A Rooftop Engagement

Michelle Duggar poses with Jinger Duggar and Jeremy Vuolo
on the night of the engagement

Two weeks ago, Jinger Duggar and Jessa Seewald shared their favorite outfits and fashion tips in a TLC webisode video. (Click here to watch.)

Who would have known that the outfit that Jinger showed off--a green dress that she scored for six bucks at a resale shop, coupled with a brown cardigan--was the outfit she would be wearing when her boyfriend, Jeremy Vuolo, proposed!

News of Jinger Duggar's engagement was released exclusively via PEOPLE Magazine this morning. (Click here to watch the announcement video.) The PEOPLE article was followed by a statement from the couple, as well as one from Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar. Both can be found on the Duggars' website.

"We are overjoyed to be engaged!" wrote Jinger and Jeremy. "It was a beautiful moment, and we look forward to a lifetime together. We are so grateful for how the Lord has brought us together."

The setting of the proposal was perfect for Jinger, who has said before that she enjoys visiting cities. Can you tell what city the two lovebirds are in?

Jeremy Vuolo proposes to Jinger Duggar

As Jinger and Jeremy shared when news of their courtship broke last month, they were introduced by Jessa and Ben Seewald.

**Be sure to tune in to TLC at 8pm ET/7pm CT on Tuesday, August 23rd, for the season two premiere of Counting On.

    2. They've actually been courting since December 11th. They released it to the public a month ago! 😊

    3. they announced it a month ago does not mean they kept it quiet at 1st, esp since the one brother had a courtship that did not go further, maybe they wanted to be sure before it became public info.

    4. They've been courting for 7 months, they just kept it secret all this time, and announced it last month. :)

    5. Technically they have neen getting to know each other for over a year. They went on a missions trip together last May.

    6. They probably talked for a long time. That is how it is done in most courtship relationships. You do not start courting unless engagement is near. Jill talked to Derrick for months and months before courting.

    8. I agree with you. That's what I was thinking as well that that was a pretty fast courtship.

    9. They have been for a while. They announced it on tv a month ago. Real time doesn't happen in tv time.

    10. I think someone said that it was actually six or seven months but they only announced it a month ago. Not sure whether that is true or not, but it kind of makes sense.

    12. It was stated in earlier articles that they actually started courting in I believe it was January. They just didn't share the news right away to give themselves time to get to know each other better first.

I'm sure being in Atlanta she needed a chaperone and it was planned.

      Delete
    2. You're obviously not firmiliar with their values and beliefs. This engagement seems to have been handled like the others, always with a chaperone while courting to ensure pureness. It's not for everyone, but then again their relationship doesn't include you either. I'd you don't like it that's totally fine, but you have no right to judge.

      Delete
    3. It is not an uncommon tradition for boyfriends to propose with family and friends there. Congrats Jessa!

      Delete
    4. God has given them a desire to keep themselves pure and that is their desire!!

      Delete
    5. She was there chaperone I'm sure

      Delete
    6. Did you ever think that maybe they wanted their parents there? Just because you can't stand them doesn't mean they don't love them.

      Delete
    7. Why can't u just be happy for them? It's a positive moment.

      Delete
    8. That's why Ben and Jessa had their first kiss privately! Can't blame them.

      Delete
    9. I guess not until the wedding night. :(

      Delete
    10. If God gives you the desire to stay pure, then why do you need a chaperone? Isn't God's desire being in you enough? Surely you can control yourself by yourself, but then when you add God in the equation, a chaperone seems even more unnecessary. I guess I just don't understand "the rules."

      Delete
    11. Come on Duggar fans, do we really care at all what the haters think anyways,I think not, so don't even give them a thought, brush it off.We know what's up.Hooray hooray the show is back again and again and again.

      Delete
    12. I find it so humiliating that two adults (28 and 22) need to be controlled by their parents because anything as little (and as beautiful) as hand holding would be judged wrong.

      Delete
    13. Because yes God is there and the desire to stay pure is there, but there is always temptation. Therefore a chaperone is just an extra precaution.

      Delete
    14. Exactly! If you are mature enough and you want to stay pure, then you WILL. no need for a chaperone. It's avoiding the idea if free will.

      Delete
    15. Anony@9:46.. so true. But these people do not seem to understand that it is very possible to control ones urges. It is very possible for a young couple to go out on a date and NOT do anything, other than talk.

  31. They are in NYC, somewhere Midtown, looking west towards the Empire State building & the sunset, in the picture where he's down on his knee. Clouds usually streak into NYC from the west, and you can see the last of the daylight there behind the buildings.

The picture with Michelle shows the ESB & the gold-topped NY Life building, which is at Madison & 26/27th. ESB is at 33rd/34th & 5th/6th. Only the sides facing 33rd and 34th have that vertical indentation you see.

So my guess is they were on some rooftop terrace at sunset in Midtown Manhattan. But I'm also guessing the engagement scene was completely staged, with cameras rolling. You can see the professional lighting reflected in the pots and in the long shadows J&J cast, which would not otherwise be visible that time of day. I wouldn't be surprised if they had actually gotten engaged privately somewhere before this, and this was TLC's set-up for the upcoming show. Who else has stage lighting (and a parent) present for an engagement?

The month of May was very cool in NYC and you needed a sweater or long sleeves in the evening. This probably wasn't taken in July because it's been hot as blazes in the city lately. You could also tell the date by the colors on the ESB. It's not always white (or is that yellow?) like that, and the schedule is online. Which also leads me to believe this might have been May. They had it white-yellow like a candle for awhile. It was yellow in early June. It's been red/white/blue in July plus it's been dark several nights in honor of world events.

So I think they got engaged awhile ago. Jinger's been hiding her left hand in photos. I think they filmed this in the spring and then made the announcement now, because the show is coming up.

      Delete
    4. I looked the Empire State Building's lighting schedule up online and you are right. This was not recent!

      Delete
    5. Not even TLC could get that building to change its colors to try to fool people into thinking it was this week.

      Delete
    6. All true...yet we are supposed to believe it was all a "surprise...I just can't believe it". What I find surprising is all the people who still believe their..hmmm...stretching of the truth??

      Delete
    7. The video posted (in the blog post below this one) shows not only the ESB but the NY Life building AND the Met Life clock tower, which is on 23rd and Madison. So it looks like they were in the Kip's Bay or Murray Hill area of the city, shooting from a rooftop somewhere.

      Delete
    8. Saw the TLC pictures of this supposed surprise engagement scene. The sun is sinking over Jeremy's right shoulder in the series of shots. There is a phenomenon in New York City called Manhattanhenge. It's when the sun's angle more or less aligns with the street grid, so if you stand in the streets in Midtown and look west at sunset, you see most or all of the sun between the buildings on the street. This peaks twice each year, around the end of May and about 10-12 days into July. However, you can get a near-Manhattanhenge for awhile before and after those dates. I've seen it around the 4th of July and also near the middle of May. I've photographed it. So judging by what I saw in the TLC pictures, there's a fairly good Manhattanhenge or near-Manhattanhenge going on. (The blaze of the setting sun can fool a camera lens into making it look like a full Manhattanhenge.) This further indicates that the engagement probably did not happen yesterday or whenever it was first announced. They are standing with the Met Life Tower visible, which is at 23rd St., and you see the sun setting between there & a street or two south of there. I know there are pictures of the Duggars in NYC yesterday, but I really have to wonder if they were there for the engagement or to dress shop (Kleinfeld/Say Yes to the Dress store?). The setting sun might have given them away.

    9. I wouldn't take that online building lights color calendar to be the gospel truth. I've seen it deviate due to breaking news. I've also seen it be red, white, and blue longer than the 4th of July, as they'd have you believe by this year's chart. (Maybe because that 4th was on a long weekend?) But the default color is supposed to be white, unless something that day changes it.

    10. hmmm…why don't people think this is deceptive? Why aren't people appalled that they take intimate moments in life and sell them to People magazine? I wonder how much money they make off of the "exclusive" photos….

    3. No, I don't think the High Line has those kinds of small/loose planters (couldn't you see someone tossing them over the edge?). Plus the landscaping on the High Line had to be greenery naturally suited to that very hot/cold environment. The engagement picture looks to be on a private building's rooftop somewhere - an apt. building, I'm guessing. Somewhere where TLC or People could do some exclusive filming. High Line would have been too public. Plus you'd have to go thru the hassle of getting a filming permit from the city.

It's actually kind of cool that it was all caught on camera ( hopefully the wedding too) so that a year from now they can relive all the excitement. A word of advice...be sure to have a really good breakfast and drink plenty of water, weddings are a bit of a marathon day

    1. It didn't just happen to be caught on camera, it was totally staged! They were probably already engaged and just acting it out again for the camera, a few months ago.

      Delete
    2. I don't know whether it was staged or not but I think you can hear the emotions in their voice. They usually both talk in a much calmer and lower tone, you can really feel that they're very emotional. Which is a good sign.

  63. If this was taped this week, as they want us to believe, they must have been terribly uncomfortable. The temperature and the humidity have been absolutely miserable.
