Joy and the Boys

Jeremiah Duggar 20 (wearing Joy's glasses), James Duggar 18, Joy Forsyth 21,

"She was always out there playing with us and having all kinds of fun."
-Jason Duggar

"She wasn't exactly the girly-girl that most of my other sisters were."
-Jeremiah Duggar

It's no secret that Joy-Anna Duggar (now Joy-Anna Forsyth) grew up as a tomboy. With two brothers directly above her in the family lineup and six below her, she spend a good portion of her childhood years playing with the boys. And even though she is 21 and married with a son, she still maintains a very close relationship with her brothers. That's why this new photo of "Joy and the boys" is so sweet.

For nostalgia, we have also included a Counting On video clip that aired around the time of Joy's wedding but contains old footage of Joy as a little girl. (The video is from 2017, so disregard the message at the end that says that Counting On airs on Monday nights.)

  1. I wonder which one of the "boys" will get married soon.

    2. I think Jason. There's a persistent rumor he's interested in Kendra's sister Lauren.

  2. I hope she is recovering well and pray for her, a stillbirth is a horrible thing I don't even want to imagine going through this :(

  5. Wow. Only one fight in her entire childhood with eight brothers. I find that hard to comprehend.

    1. It was a good story but I doubt it's true.

    2. She probably means only one big fight, I have four siblings and we all didn’t fight much when we were younger.

    3. One fight in 18 years? I think if the Duggars didn't sugar coat everything they would be more popular.

    4. When I think of "fight", I think of physicality. I believe the "boys" were taught to respect their sisters. I'm certain they had arguments or disagreements, so, in my opinion, there's no "sugar coating".

  6. It happens. I had 5 children, and they didn't fight and are still very close as adults. Their father, being military, was a great disciplinarian and taught them to respect others, especially me. of course, they tried me more than him, but my husband always had my back. I am very grateful.

  7. I bet everyone of those young men is super protective of joy. What a lovely picture of them all together. Jeremiah looks like joy’s twin with her glasses on. Joy looks well, & I truly hope she is heeling both physically & mentally from the very sad loss of little Annabel.

    1. What would Joy need protection from? Why couldn't she protect herself? I'm not sure what this means.

      Delete
    2. Why being so defensive all the time? Joy has probably gone through the hardest hardship of her young life and her brothers would naturally want to protect her from nosy people, tabloids, not well-meaning remarks, exhaustion, feeling lonely, dark thoughts, etc. I think it's lovely that they are so close now.

  8. Joy can look so pretty when she is dressed up and has makeup. And at the same time I think she still has a heart of a tomboy.

  9. Does the Duggar home school teach when to use different pronouns? I often wonder.

    1. Oh my it’s the English police.

    2. Different pronouns?

      Delete
    3. Please explain what you mean by “different pronouns.” There aren’t that many pronouns in the English language to choode from. What are you referring to?

      Delete
    4. Anon 4:03 Do you mean like Mr., Mrs. and Miss? I'm sure they know that guys are called Mr.and young girls are called Miss and married girls and all older women are called Mrs. That wouldn't be hard to remember if that's what you meant.

    5. Sometimes the Duggars confuse subjective and objective case pronouns ("Me and him like tater tot casserole."). Unfortunately not corrected by their parents while they were growing up. Has nothing to do with what curriculum they used, only that their book learning in the area of grammar was not reinforced in daily life.

      Delete
    6. @6:40 Just a simple question. I assume it is based on the poster's observation of the Duggars' frequent grammatical errors. An example is their use of the pronoun 'you'.

    7. People use the speech patterns that they hear their parents use. It doesn't matter what they are taught in school.

      Delete
    8. Some people don't really care about using "correct" pronouns. I'm one of those people. English was one of my best subjects in school, but I just never considered it to be practical. In the end, does it really matter? To some people, I guess, so they should speak correctly and let the rest of us speak how we like

      Delete
    9. @10:35 In this case it does matter because the parents ARE the school. The parents are supposed to be teaching proper usage. If they don't know that, why are they teaching?

      Delete
    10. @2:33 English is not practical? You use it every day. You just used it.

    11. 3:38- Miss, Mr., Mrs., etc. are not pronouns. A pronoun takes the place of a noun- I, me, he, she, they, them, you, we, Jim, her, us- and the Duggars often use them incorrectly. An example: You and me will have fun. It should be you and I. I find it sloppy when people, who are supposedly educated, don’t appear to care about speaking proper English.

  10. Love that pic of Joy with her brother! All so close in age and I am sure protective of her. She can count on them to be there for her no matter what. Eileen

  11. I almost didn't recognize James, in this picture. As he was growing up, James had a really unique look. However, in this picture, James look a lot like Joseph.

  13. She looks happy, at home and herself with them. So many changes and so quick in her life... not bad mind you, just fast & hard to adjust from being herself, more of a tomboy and hanging with the boys to the expected “girlie-girl” wearing makeup and only with the older sisters, becoming a wife and mom— all in about 1 1/2 is years? I do hope she’s okay and happy and allowed to confide in those boys as they were her peer group for long.

    1. I agree, Joy had to change a lot and quickly. She was the one who was the most comfortable outside and sure would love to wear pants, but her new husband liked her in dresses, so she had to do with that and get totally transformed. They started dating in November (2016), and then in March 2017 got engaged, got married in May of the same year (2 month short engagement!). Went for honeymoon, came back, and she is pregnant. First living in trailer till the house is being renovated, with a new husband, pregnant, far from her family. Then the baby was born via c-section. Then another pregnancy, tragic miscarriage.
I understand she was stoked to marry Austin, whose parents own that great family camp, land, horses, lake. But she is only 21, and now she seems to be very very sad.

  15. It's so nice to see siblings be close. I think Jim Bob and Michelle raised a very good family. I'm always amazed, though, to get an updated photo and see how much these kids have grown. I remember them all when they were so small.

  16. Two older brothers? I always thought Joy had four older brothers. Which ones among Josh, John, Joe and Josiah AREN'T her brothers?

    1. This post, is referring to the fact, that Jackson, Justin, James, Jason, Jerimiah, and Jedidiah, were born immediately after Joy Anna, and Josiah and Joseph, were born immediately before Joy Anna. Josh and John David, are not included, in this post because there were multiple siblings, born in between them, and Joy Anna.

    2. They said 2 brothers DIRECTLY older than her, and 6 brothers DIRECTLY younger than her. That doesn’t mean Josh and John aren’t her brothers, but there were sisters in between them and the 2 brothers directly older than her.

      Delete
    3. Why be so confrontational?

      Delete
    4. Not meaning only 2 older, it says 2 above her and 6 after. she is between them in birth order

      Delete
    5. She means right below and above her. But they are all birth siblings.

      Delete
    6. "Two brothers directly above her."

      Delete
    7. They mean directly above her.

      Delete
    8. I believe they were referring to the direct succession of brothers next to her in line.

      Delete
    9. It doesn't say she only has two older brothers, it states that in the line up of kids (birth order) she has two brothers directly before her and six directly after her.

      Delete
    10. "Above her" and close to her age. There are 4 sisters between the oldest brothers (John and John) and Joseph. Jinger. the youngest of that set of sisters is 4 years older than Joy, and Jana is 7 years older. While Joseph is 2 years older, Josiah and Joy are just 14 months apart. And then the next sister, Johannah, was born 8 years after Joy. So the closest to Joy in age were 2 older and 6 younger brothers.

In addition, older sisters were/are very close to each other, and Joy was just a baby, so she was not included much in their friendship then, they looked at her just as a baby.
