'Lauren Finds Her Dress' Recap

Counting On "Lauren Finds Her Dress"
  • Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo visit the San Antonio Birth Center, where they are planning to deliver their baby. The center is two-and-a-half hours from their home but is near multiple hospitals.
  • Jinger was one of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's two children to be delivered at home, but she and Jeremy have decided that they don't want to go that route.“My mom and quite a few of my sisters have done home births, and for me, I don’t feel comfortable with it," says Jinger.
  • Later, they have their gender reveal ultrasound at Amazing Baby. When the ultrasound technician informs the parents-to-be that they are having a girl, they are overjoyed. “We just could not believe it,” says Jinger. “I think my family is going to be thrilled to find out this news.”
  • Some of the Duggars (Jana, John, Jim Bob, Michelle, the Seewalds, the Forsyths, Jedidiah, Jeremiah, Jason, James, Justin, Jackson, Johannah, Jennifer, Jordyn, Josie, Tyler, Mackynzie, and Michael) plus friends Elijah and Laura arrive at cabins in Granby, Colorado, to celebrate Jana and John’s 28th birthday. They have traveled from Arkansas in their bus.
  • “It’s really hard to get people together these days,” says Jana. “It kind of ends up being, whoever can make it for this or that can come.”
  • How do Jana and John compare? “She was pretty rowdy growing up,” says John. “She’d get in trouble a lot.” Jana clarifies: “Well I’d take up an offense for him. If someone wasn’t being nice, I’d be like…’You don’t do that to my twin. You don’t mess with him.’”
  • “As they’ve gotten older, I think their personalities have morphed into being more similar,” says Jessa. “They both are pretty opinionated.”'
  • “She used to pull the, ‘I’m older than you’ card all the time on me…but now, I pull it on her,” says John. “She doesn’t like that.”
  • After a birthday lunch, during which the family sings “Happy Birthday to Y’all” to Jana and John, it’s time to hit the slopes. While the Bates ladies wear skirts while skiing, the Duggars do not. “My sisters and I typically wear skirts, but there are certain activities where it’s more appropriate to wear something else,” explains Jessa.
  • The Duggars take ski lessons on the first day and then have a chance to practice what they learned on the second day. The little kids, especially Justin and Josie pick it up quickly. When asked who is the worst skier, Austin replies. “I’m going to plead the fifth. You know, we have to live together. Not live together as far as it’s my wife. I don’t mean that."
  • While everyone else skis, Michelle and Joy hang with the littles at the lodge. Gideon is one month old. “I really missed not having Joy there, skiing,” says Austin. “I mean, it’s fun going with the guys, but it’s just not the same.”
  • One evening, all the older siblings and spouses meet up for food and Pictionary. The words have to do with the twins and things they have done. It turns out to be a very competitive game. Most of the siblings, including John, agree that Jana is more competitive than John.
  • One of the words is chicken coop, since Jana and James built the family’s chicken coop. “Jana has a whole bunch of chickens, or she had a whole bunch of chickens, in our garden,” says Jinger. “I think some of them got attacked by animals, so I don’t know. May they rest in peace, or many pieces.” Jana now has ducks.
  • John’s team ends up winning, and it takes competitive Jana a minute to compose herself.
  • Everyone has a blast on the ski trip. “Out of the different birthdays that we’ve had, this one definitely ranks up there as a great one, just spending family time together” says Jana.
  • Back in Arkansas, Lauren goes wedding dress shopping at The White Dress Boutique with Michelle, her bridesmaids, her mom, and her dad. “When I shop…I have a purpose,” says Lauren. “I go in there, it’s 15 minutes, and I’m out.” She has been to multiple places but hasn’t found “the one.” But she does know what she wants: crepe material, fitted, beads but no lace, and a modest high neckline. Lauren is going for elegant and classic.
  • After trying on three dresses with lots of details, Lauren comes out in a simple gown made of crepe material. The front has no embellishments on it, but the back has beads. She says she wants a gown that draws attention to her face, not to her body. “It’s more you, Lauren,” says Dwain. But he says he loves all of them. “My dad, he’s very thoughtful,” says Lauren. “He’ll put his opinion out, but he knows when to do it for me, but then sometimes he knows where I just want to hear, ‘I think it looks pretty,’ or something like that.”
  • “This dress is something I’ve really been looking for, but I was a little scared, just thinking, ‘In three more months, I’m going to be married, and this could be the dress I wear down the aisle.” Lauren tries on a fifth dress but ends up going back to the fourth one and choosing it. “I really couldn’t have asked for a better dress,” she says.

  1. I liked that this episode was not totally focused on the marriage/baby theme. Also how Jana was presented as more than just the "oldest girl who helps to takes care of the younger kids" and her back and forth with John both in the Pictionary contest and the couch interview was very funny.

Austin came across as a little more likeable in this episode than the last one. He's obviously never going to be a stereotypically romantic man, but I do get the sense that he does care about Joy in his own way.

It would have been interesting to hear from Lauren why she chose against a custom made dress. If her shopping style is to spend just 15 minutes in a store, it doesn't sound like she's the type to enjoy shopping for its own sake, so why not just get a custom made dress and not waste time looking in many stores for the perfect ready-made dress? Though some of the dress choices were obviously chosen for their resemblance to other Duggar wedding dresses, NOT because Lauren was ever seriously considering buying them.

    1. I think Joy having a csection and having to help her afterwards made him appreciate her more, and seems like it’s been a good thing for him. I liked him more in this episode then I’ve ever liked him before

    2. It’s not the fact that Lauren didn’t want a wedding dress. She planned her wedding in only weeks so she very limited choice of dresses. Most people have at least 6 months to find a dress and get it altered. Under two months Is a very short time for a wedding

    3. She planned a wedding for two months time, she couldn’t have a custom dress even if she wanted to to be honest here!

  2. I loved the scene when Jinger and Jeremy found out they were having a girl. It brought tears to my eyes. I also loved Lauren's dress; simple but elegant. Lauren's wedding dress kind of reminds me of Meghan Markles.

    1. I do, too; except I feel like somethings is missing when all the adult siblings are together. I don’t know if it’s more honesty, conversation and/or a bunch of appetizers with football on tv? It just seems awkward somehow...as if they really don’t act the way they’re televised in real life!

      Delete
    2. Ofcourse they act differently around each other when they are not being filmed. We know the show is scripted. That is reality tv for ya.

    3. I think a fair percentage of viewers/fans already tuned out or have been tuning out because in the beginning, the Duggars position was that they were just going to live their everyday life with a camera crew in tow. That's what attracted viewers/fans, but it hasn't been that way for a very long time now. The longer it goes on, the less "real" the episodes are. Marriages and births are real events obviously, but there's so much contrived drama and hype, so much "teasing" for new seasons that are composed of old flashback material and old news. A lot of the interactions are awkward and a lot of it just feels like "advertising the brand", rather than letting people into their livingrooms. I think the vast majority of viewers/fans expected something a little closer to genuine maybe.

  6. My only concern was the birth center being so far away from her home. Just because her sisters had long labors doesn’t mean she’s gonna have one as well. Anyway we know every thing went well and all but her logic in that regard was a little confusing

    ReplyDelete
  7. I am confused. Lauren had a very clear idea of what she wanted (fabric, style, beads- no lace). Why did they put her in 3 lace dresses and one with a big skirt?

This does not look good for the shop! Do they not listen to the brides that come in? After watching this I would not consider dress shopping there. Lauren’s vision was not so out there that there aren’t enough similar dresses she could have tried (no lace, no big skirt, high neckline which are all rather popular features for wedding dresses in the last two years).
The rest also didn’t seemed too enthusiastic about the love/leave it signs. Can’t decide if tlc wanted them or if the shop owner insisted (looked like the latter one which would also be annoying if you shop there and then get forced to do even if you don’t like it).
All in all- she got a beautiful dress in the end but this is not good PR for the shop.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I thought the same thing. If you say no lace then why would the shop be prepared with lace dresses for her to try on??

      Delete
    2. i was so surprised when they brought out the first lacy dress and wondered why the shop didnt listed to her! by the 3rd dress, i'd have left without trying it on. but, when they mentioned 2 of the dresses resembled joys and kendras, both bridesmaids, i figured it had to be a publicity stunt. i mean, what bridal shop would completely ignore the brides requests, especially since they mentioned they had already visited a few shops and not found the right dress! no business owner would want to be on tv blatantly ignoring their customer. that would be bad publicity. but, then they pulled out the perfect dress and redeemed themselves, lol

      Delete
    3. Agree! She kept saying she did not like lace, and they just went right on putting lace dress after lace dress.

      Delete
    4. Maybe her mom wanted her to try lace? I’m sure Lauren agreed to try the dresses, doing so helps confirm what you want. I don’t know of any good bridal shop that would not encourage a bride to try multiple styles....encourage, not force.

      Delete
    5. Because brides can go in knowing exactly what they want, however from experience they can try a different style and fall in love. I wanted lace long sleeves fitted.... it couldn’t have been further from what I bought in the end haha.... it was a good move by the store

      Delete
    6. Exactly 3:18! My sister-in-law kept insisting that she needed to have her arms covered. Guess who ended up with a strapless dress? Another recently married family member always thought she wanted a retro 1920s style dress. She ended up falling in love with a mermaid/fit and flare style dress!

      Delete
    7. It was a publicity stunt. She already had the dress picked out prior to even going to the store. I am sure the dress was free or discounted if they shown her buying from them and showing off their dresses

      Delete
    8. Agree 2:13. How boring the shopping segment would have been if Lauren had found no dress to her liking in that store! Of course it was all arranged in advance. You don't go set up a crew and lights and cameras unless you're sure to film what you want to air.

      Delete
    9. The reason I think why brought out dresses like Lauren didn’t like is purely the fact the the sugars expect to have a wedding dress under two months and that isn’t very realistic for so many dresses so they have to work with what the have in stock, most form fitting dresses aren’t modest so she’s lucky she found one half modest (abit tight tho for modesty)

      Delete
  8. That dress was so form-fitting that I don't know how she thought it drew attention to her face, not her body. It was not a "modest" shape at all.

    ReplyDelete

    1. At least Lauren's wedding dress wasn't showing cleavage or short. Everything was modestly covered.

      Delete
    2. I agree. The dress was perfectly altered to the shape of her body. The cut and simplicity of the dress were originally intended to emphasize her body. While she had a panel to line the sheer back, the beading details drew your eyes to it. I think that it was a very flattering dress and Lauren looked lovely in it; however, it was not a "modest" dress.

      Delete
    3. Oh my goodness 1:26- would you like her to be in bubble wrap?

      Delete
    4. That dress was tight on her wedding day and last night!

      Delete
    5. I agree. Ha ha I could hardly look at her face. So goes for that comment. That dress showed everything. I’m surprised her dad agreed with that one. And I’m very surprised the Duggars and Bates (Tori) have started down the form fitting trend. It does not fit in at all with what they state.

    6. If your skin is covered your skin is covered. What do you want her to wear, a burlap sack?

      Delete
    7. That's how women's bodies are shaped, can't help that. It's the work of God's hands, I don't think we are supposed to be ashamed of it. Showing off private areas in a revealing way is another thing, I think

      Delete
    8. Modesty isn't just about skin being covered. It's also about avoiding "eye-traps" and drawing attention to one's body.

      Delete
    9. 4:35 is absolutely correct, and that is the exact term they use. Anything that hugs the body is not considered modest. Which is why there's such commotion when the pregnant girls start wearing those extremely tight t-shirts.

      Delete
    10. I thought it was a beautiful fit that showed off her lovely shape. But I'm not so concerned about modesty that having her fshape highlighted seems wrong. To me "not modest" means showing way too much cleavage.

      Delete
    11. 12:01 Remember that this family had their knees blurred out at one time. Their level of "modesty" is much stricter than normal.

      Delete
    12. Anon at 3:04AM: But Lauren isn't a Duggar, at least she wasn't one when this scene took place. She said her modesty standards were very close to the Duggars standards, but not exactly the same. Lauren's father seemed to have no issue with the dress, he also let her go to college, so obviously her family does not have the exact same beliefs the Duggars do.

      Delete
    13. Was. Their level of modesty “was” much stricter.

      Delete
    14. I guarantee you Lauren did not have a typical college experience. No living in the dorm, no exposure to "liberal" thinking, no encouragement to broaden horizons. She didn't even go alone! Most colleges these families choose are small and conservative and Bible-based. It definitely isn't a taste of the "real world" for the kids.

      Delete
  9. guess these girls are changing their minds. last time they went skiing they wore dress? every couple years they keep changing their minds. The bible does not state a women has to wear dress. dress modest. people can dress modest in pants.

    3. They most certainly do still live with Dad's - and Mom's - opinions. They still want to please their parents and stay on good terms. No couple yet has made that clean break to Do-It-Our-Way-ville.

  10. A real question here; please post it..How could Jana and John David have celebrated their January birthdays skiing when we all know the Duggars were in Australia at the time of Jana's birthday and John David was in Arkansas celebrating his at Joy & Austin's house? Many photos and publicity was given to these two events online. Please explain why they're passing the birthday trips as having been taken in January?

    8. Actually, they was a statement on the show that the celebration took place "a couple months" AFTER the actual birthday of the twins. They didn't give an exact date, but it probably took place sometime in March. I vaguely recall a ski trip being mentioned on this blog, too.

    9. It wasnt taken in january because baby gideo was already a month old and he was born in february they obviously waited until returning from their trip which some family membensrs could not attend for work reasons

    10. Jana said during the show that they were celebrating their birthdays later than the actual birthdate. You obviously missed that. If you have the show on DVR, maybe go back and listen to that part. Why is it that people are always trying to say the Duggars are not being truthful? it was exactly for the reason you mentioned, being separated on their birthday, that they scheduled 'a ski trip with as many family members who could come' afterwards

      Delete
    15. To be fair to the op, while the show did announce that the trip was later than the real birthday, the show HAS been very confusing this season regarding the time line. They did seem to "pass" Jinger and Jeremy celebrating the wedding anniversary the actual day, yet they also speak of the baby, though it's unlikely they knew she was pregnant that early.

    7. @12:46. She may be too opinionated about the man she wants to marry. Perhaps, she believes her self way above those guys who wish to court her.

      Delete
    8. Anon at 520PM: Or, she takes marriage very seriously and understands it is a lifetime commitment, or maybe she has seen the issues other Duggar couples have had (which they've mentioned themselves on the show), and this has made her realize the importance of careful discernment before marriage.

It's odd how people question, on one hand, the teenage brides and short courtships featured in the recent Duggar marriages, but also question why Jana hasn't followed that formula herself. You can't have it both ways. Though maybe the people critiquing, say, Josiah, are different from those critiquing Jana.

      Delete
    9. Maybe she is way above the guys who have come to court. Glad Jana knows her mind and isn’t settling because some random has decided that he wants her

      Delete
    10. 11:59- I think there are those who feel sorry for Jana because she isn't married yet, and those who question why a woman close to 30 is still living at home with her parents. As for the latter, this is common practice among IBLP families- daughters stay at home until they marry. It would be interesting if the Duggars were upfront and addressed this. While it's possible that Jana has made this choice without any expectations or indoctrination, it's also possible she has not.

      Delete
    11. John David is the same age and AFAIK he's also still living with his parents. Not because he can't afford to move out or has nowhere to go, he actually owns his own property that he rents out. The Duggars obviously expect ALL their children, sons AND daughters to live at home until marriage.

Also, even the majority of the married children are still very dependent on their parents in many ways (living in Duggar properties, working for Duggar companies). And that is certainly more a Duggar thing than a IBLP thing, so is the default expectation NOT to go to college.

    3. Gideon was only one month old, and it is not recommended for mothers to participate in sports before the body has recovered from the birth, usually 4-6 weeks, maybe more after a c-section.

      Delete
    4. My guess is that 4 weeks after a c section the doctor had not approved her to go skiing. That would be incredibly hard on your abdominal muscles. She’ll have lots of chances to ski in the future :-)

    8. My take on it was it was more medical. I mean just having given birth the pelvic bones and ligaments are not back to normal and she could have had an injury if she fell. Also perhaps was breastfeeding frequently

      Delete
    9. Joy stated she wasn't going skiing because she'd just given birth recently, not because she had to care for Gideon. I also didn't get the sense that she particularly cared about skiing, considering Austin's comment about who is the worst skier and their honeymoon episode. Though she did seem miffed about being left out of a family event.

    10. She explained that. She had recently had a csection and was unable to risk falling or injuring herself while skiing.

    11. She just had a c section a month before. Not supposed to do any physical activity for 6-8 weeks after a c section and she stated that the baby was only a month old. Probably just following doctors orders. I had 4 c sections.. She’s still a little sore a month later I’m sure.

    15. You don't go skiing one month after delivering a baby. Your body is still healing! Particularly after a c-section.

      Delete
    16. I’ve had two c sections. You’re still on pain meds a month later and the scar is not fully healed. She was falling asleep sitting up and trying to take in enough calories to breastfeed. Skiing probably didn’t even sound fun.

    19. @8:57. While I agree with her not skiing, pain meds a month after a c—section? I had two and no pain meds after the first day for both. And my first was a longer labor than Joy's was before I had the c-section. It is not good to be on pain meds for long, especially not as long as a month. I was out of bed and slowly walking in the hospital a few hours after my c-section. And I was much older than Joy when I had my children.

As for falling asleep because of her not eating enough, I do not buy that. Being tired because of lack of sleep is probably the reason. Joy does not look like she was at an unhealthy low weight prior to pregnancy. If she is eating about the same before the birth and eating healthy, she would be just slowly loosing weight.

      Delete
    20. Anon at 630AM: If you're just trying to point out that we shouldn't assume Joy was taking pain medications a month after her surgery, I agree with you. But different pain tolerances ARE a thing and I wouldn't judge someone who IS still on pain medications a month out.

  14. When are we going to hear news about the Duggar boys going to help after Hurricane Florence? They've been to ALERT to train for this, supposedly. While only John has used the training (I believe that's where he first learned to fly), it seems the Duggars use the program as a way to let the boys have a little exposure to the outside world after they graduate the home school program.

    11. It's never "too soon" after a storm to help. A lot of Baptist men were getting ready to go before the storm ever hit. Every minute counts in a disaster. JD could be flying in supplies to the flooded and cut-off cities. Other private pilots are.

    12. OP, why are you commenting on the blog instead of helping down there?

    14. Anon @ 11:48 How would the boys get exposure to the outside world by attending ALERT? It is run by ATI/IBLP and only followers send their boys there, so they are only mixing with those already in their 'circle', the Duggars have said many times that they try to shield their kids from the outside world, also the boys who have attended have done so before they graduate from homeschool.

    15. Very true comment 3:29. I don't understand why parents who claim to follow Christ like that shield their children from the "outside" world. It's easy to stand up for what you believe in when everyone around you feels the same way! If the world is ever going to be a better place, you have to train your children how to get along with everyone (no matter what religion, or no religion at all), and not teach them that danger exists where it doesn't, or that narrow thinking solves anything. There's the real danger, if there's any to be had in the world.

    16. Anon at 3:29AM: ALERT may be run by ATI/IBLP but even within that subculture, there are many differences between families, so the Duggar boys who went would have met people with different beliefs. And if this whole idea of the program being used as a "reform school" for rebellious kids is true, then they'd certainly have been exposed to the different beliefs held by the rebels.

For example, the Bates go to college, and actually give real hugs not side hugs to their significant others. They allow Lawson and Nathan to go on extended trips outside the family home. I know Duane Swanson has spoken at IBLP events, but he also claimed the idea of courtship was new to him.

Examples like these are why I do NOT think the ATI/IBLP program is a cult, though they have been accused of that. If it really was a cult, then they would NOT allow for that much variety in how the people involved live their lives.

  15. Our family really loved the outing. We loved the wedding dress shopping. Lauren's dress is beautiful. The birthday party was very interesting. Looks like everyone had a great time. We can not wait for Josiah and Lauren's and John-David and Abbie's wedding and honeymoon to air. Natasha B.

    2. I am going to be honest here. I do not like the wedding dress shppoing or the preparations for the wedding. The first couple weddings it was fine but now becoming boring and repetitive. Do they have to try on all those dresses for the store to get pr?

  17. Yeah Lauren's dress wasn't my style but it suited her. And loved Jana & John's birthday adventure, always like seeing Jana and her activities in life. Plus its cute that in youth she stood up for John.

  18. Out of curiosity, why is Lauren's dad always red in his face? Is it a condition, allergies, or something like that?

    1. I get red in my face when I’m nervous and embarrassed, or I feel like I’m being looked at. Maybe he gets a bit nervous around the cameras

    1. One of the reasons could be the limited time. Wedding dresses take usually 6 months to order, even the simple ones. Lauren would be restricted to sample sales that can be adjusted to fit her.

      That would limit the selection.

Most brides I know ordered their wedding dresses at least 6 months in advance, some 9 months. The only brides who did not have to wait 6 to 9 months for their dresses, lucked out and
purchased a sample dress on clearance.

  22. I loved Lauren’s dress and the back was beautiful. But I wouldn’t say a form fitting dress that tight is ‘very modest’ like she said. It shows everything and leaves little to the imagination. But she looked really pretty in it tho. She’s lucky to get a dress in such short time, usually takes months unless you buy one on the rack
