Recap: 'Could It Be Twins?'

Counting On "Could It Be Twins?"
-->
  • Jessa, Ben, and Spurgeon visit the Dillards so Jill, a professional midwife, can listen to Baby Seewald’s heartbeat. Jessa is 18 weeks pregnant. Both Jessa and Ben think it’s a boy, but at this point, they haven’t ruled out the possibility of twins.
  • “We’re thinking it’s just one,” says Jessa. “At the same time, my mom said that whenever she was pregnant with Jana and John, the doctor only found one heartbeat at a time, and then whenever they did an ultrasound they found out it was twins.”
  • The Seewalds plan to keep the gender a secret once they find out.
  • The Duggar siblings suggest baby names:
    • Joy: Maximus
    • Jedidiah: Hezekiah
    • Jedidiah: Solomon
  • A family friend comes over to the Duggar house to let Jinger taste different food options for the rehearsal dinner and wedding reception.
  • Jinger and Jeremy are doing Italian (pasta) for the rehearsal dinner. “I think Jinger’s knowledge of Italian foods and culture is progressing quite well,” says Jeremy, smiling.
  • For the reception, they are doing cheese and crackers, a relish bar (a bunch of pickled foods), coffee, and meatballs. The Duggars (all but Jim Bob) love anything pickled. Jinger and her siblings especially enjoy trying the different types of cheeses that their family friend brings over.
  • The ceremony will be at the Cathedral of the Ozarks, and the reception will be at a church down the street. The Duggars are sending out 450 invitations and are expecting 800-1200 guests.
  • Cindy, Michelle’s childhood friend, comes over to discuss decorations. Jinger and Joy take her to the venues to scope them out. Cindy suggests they FaceTime Jeremy and tell him Jinger is going to sing during the ceremony. Jeremy gives an awkward pause because he knows Jinger wouldn’t be comfortable with that.
  • Anna and her four kids meet Jill and Israel at an indoor play place. “Israel is entering the training twos a little bit early,” says Jill. He is starting to express strong opinions.
  • “Definitely having four children under the age of seven, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed,” says Anna. “I feel like a good mom during naptime.”
  • Meanwhile, Jessa, Ben, and Spurgeon head down to Central Arkansas to the Amplify Christian Concert, where Christian hip hop artist FLAME will be performing.
  • “I’ve never been to a concert before--of any type, really,” admits Jessa. “Hip hop isn’t my favorite type of music. I do appreciate a lot of FLAME’s lyrics though.”
  • “The Duggars haven’t attended many concerts,” states Jedidiah. He says his family would rather enjoy entertainment in the comfort of their “slow-paced home.”
  • When the Seewalds arrive and meet up with FLAME and his band, FLAME asks Ben if he would like to join them on stage during the concert and shoot water guns out into the crowd.
  • Spurgeon really enjoys the concert, until he falls asleep in Ben’s arms. (The ear protection definitely worked!) Ben also enjoys his brief moment on stage, and Jessa enjoys her first concert.

  1. Jessa should say "when my mother was pregnant with Jana and John", not "whenever". It makes no sense.

    1. I completely agree. It is odd when the Duggars refer to a specific time or event they say "whenever" rather than "when."

      Ex:
Whenever my mother was pregnant she craved pickles. (not a specific event)

When my mother was pregnant with my sister, she craved pickles. (A specific event and time)

    3. Yes the all say it. "Whenever I was 12" "whenever we were on our honeymoon". It's when, not whenever 😑

      Delete
    4. They do that all the time! It's a regional thing, I think. Every time they say it, I get confused for a second, because to me, whenever is used to refer to something that happens or happened repeatedly, not a specific event.

  2. “I feel like a good mom during naptime.” - Anna
This cracked me up. It's such a mum comment, one we can all relate to. You feel like you are sinking and not doing well at all, but then they settle into a peaceful sleep and everything seems ok.

  3. "Training twos"? Someone please explain.
I also was surprised to see Izzy pushing Spurgeon around in a baby walker. The only time those things are safe is if the wheels have been removed. And I'm sure others will disagree

    1. I have been surprised to see them as well, however, as long as there are no stares to go down....maybe they are making a comeback? I could maybe imagine using one in a basement or first floor with no stairs but I feel and once they can really start moving you would have to watch the child carefully.

      Delete
    2. I'm going to guess that it's another word for "terrible twos?"I could be wrong. Maybe that's how they refer toilet training or other self care activities.

      Delete
    3. "Training Twos" is a more positive term for the period of time in a child's life commonly called the "Terrible Twos."

      Delete
    4. What good are they without wheels?!?

      Delete
    5. The Duggars frequently refer to "training" their children. I think Jill tried to put a positive twist on the "terrible twos," referring to an important time to be "training" the child.

      Delete
    6. Training twos is referring to the terrible twos - instead of seeing them as terrible seeing them as a training opportunity as it's an age where children need lots of loving discipline as they gain new independence. Baby walkers are safe so long as your watching a child and if you don't have a basement/have it securely locked. The main issue is child can suddenly reach things at 'walking height' so you need to baby proof to walking level as opposed to crawling level. Once child isn't in all day no issues.

  4. Enough already!!!its one child..stop teasing and stringing people along unless it really is twins and u at least tell people and then choose to keep the sex and names to yourself ..congrats still but please quit !

  5. I'm confused about what "appointment" (or "appointments") Jill and Jessa were talking about. Is lying on the sofa with your sister listening to your "belly" considered an appointment? I sure hope she's having other prenatal care than that. And she hasn't had an ultrasound yet? I know a woman due in June and she's already had at least one ultrasound plus knows gender. So she was less than Jessa's 18 weeks when that happened.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Jill & Jessa didn't say anything about that being an appointment.. Derick said "how was your appointment?" And Jill clarified that it was not an appointment

      Delete
    2. She said she was at "an appointment" before last night, I think. So one appointment and one non-appointment?

      Delete
    3. Seeing as how her sister is a certified midwife, why couldn't they call it an appointment? But apparently they didn't even call it that on the show. You may choose to use a doctor for your baby deliveries, but midwives have been around for ages and are still acceptable options for people wanting home births. So if that's the issue you are taking here, live your life how you want it and let them live theirs.

  6. What are the "training 2's" - I heard Jill say that Izzy is entering the "training 2's." And did she say he had a bit of an attitude? He's a toddler! What exactly is she planning to do to get rid of this "attitude" she apparently disapproves of? While she nurses a second baby, of course, plus takes care of whatever is wrong with Derick (we still don't know, but we got to see the gagging again), and gets ready to go back "overseas"...

    1. I was wondering if the Duggars refer to "the terrible 2's" as "the training 2's," so as not to sound so negative. In other words, same crazy 2 year old behavior, but they look at it as a training opportunity. Still, I wonder... Exactly what "training" methods do they use on a 2 year old? Sounds more like they're "training" a puppy!

      Delete
    2. My guess is a positive way of wording "terrible two's". As far as the attitude she is going to train him. He is absolutely old enough to start training him to have a good, positive attitude. One of the biggest problem in our society lack of training little ones. If Michelle did it when her oldest ones were very small I'm sure Jill can handle it with two! I hope to find out soon what is wrong with Derick, my prayer is that it is nothing serious!

      Delete
    3. I'm sure "training twos" means this is an age when the kid is learning a lot.

      Delete
    4. Totally agree with you, 9:47. "One of the biggest problem [sic] in our society [is] lack of training little ones." Just last night, there was a roving band of toddlers in our neighborhood, flashing gang signs. Or were they simply sucking their thumbs? In any case, obviously they were not trained in any way, because they were still wearing diapers! Yes, this is society's biggest problem right now: Untrained little ones. LOCK YOUR DOORS! Or at least keep your doorknobs up and out of reach. Maybe spread some Cheerios on your front lawn, too. That will slow them down. Good luck!

    6. Habits are begun when they're little. The longer you wait to start teaching them right ways of doing things, reacting, etc., the more set they are in their ways already. Kids are way more disrespectful of other people, other people's property, etc. I'm not that old, and I definitely see a difference for the worse in kids than a couple decades ago when I was a babysitting teenager.

      Delete
    7. 4:25 Let me break it down for you: Don't train those toddlers, fast forward a few years. They will be a roving band of gang members, flashing guns. Or were they simply shooting bullets through the windows of your home? In any case, obviously they were not trained in any way, because they had no respect for authority, human life , and the list goes on! Yes, if you don't get your way riot, shoot law enforcement, burn flags, be destructive. ... Yes, one of society's biggest problems right now: Untrained little ones of years gone by. LOCK YOUR DOORS! INSTALL ALARM SYSTEMS! READ THE BIBLE AND SEE WHAT IT SAYS ABOUT A CHILD LEFT TO HIMSELF.

  8. It was a pretty great episode! But, mini-rant ahead!

Does Arkansas have different grammar rules? Because according to this post (and my ears lisenting to what they're saying) twice it's quoted the wrong use of whenever.

"Rule 1 – If an event is unique or its date or time is known, use when. Rule 2 – Whenever is best used for repeated events or events whose date or time is uncertain. If you can substitute every time that or at whatever time that in your sentence, then whenever is preferred."

Michelle wasn't pregnant with Jana and John David multiple times. And I would think that for that pregnancy, they only found out that it was twins once. Which makes the events unique, meaning "when" should've been used.

It's just that I've noticed it for a while, and whenever it happens (haha) it's an irritant because it sounds wrong, and the grammar rules I know say it's wrong. But theirs might. And they might have different ones. Still sounds wrong!

Ok, end rant! I really do enjoy watching Counting On, this little thing is like, argh! This probably wasn't the best place for this rant, but I'm not trying to be negative. This just hits my buttons!

Also, glad to see Anna again! And Meredith!

Happy wishes to you guys and to the Duggar/Dillard/Seewald/Vuolo families!

    3. I say "whenever" sometimes and I live in the north. I think it's just kind of a bad grammar habit :)

      Delete
    4. I just watched this episode. I think what she meant to say was that "whenever" her mother heard the heartbeats during her Jana/John David pregnancy...., not whenever she was pregnant with Jana and John David.

    5. They DO say that a lot, though. I don't get it but whatever 😂. They're still fun to watch!

  9. Okay, I was thrilled to see Ben and especially Jessa venture out of their "comfort zone"! No, I don't care for rap music either, but it is very popular these days! Thought it made for better viewing to see the Seawalds spread their wings a little. There is a big world out there that Jessa needs to explore! Her past travels don't count as I don't think she actually really experienced how the locals live or participate much in other cultures. Plenty to learn and explore without compromising your principals or morals. Plus, parents should be able to teach their kids more than bible verses!

  13. What? 18 weeks and just hearing the heart beat and no ultrasound? My nurisng education must be teaching me something different.. Wow. Why the lack of prenatal care? Most of my patients have had a least 2 ultrasounds by 18 weeks..

    ReplyDelete

    1. THats what I was thinking. Is She getting no prenatal care? Guess we will have to wait a few days after birth to hear what sex the baby is and then another few for the baby's name. Guess that sells more magazines and increases ratings.

      Delete
    2. Usually a woman seeking natural childbirth will have appointments with a midwife that are an hour at length for each appointment. Initially, the midwife and client will meet once a month and will meet more often as the pregnancy progresses. A Doppler is used to detect the heartbeat, the midwife will feel for the position of the baby, and the client and midwife discuss everything from nutrition (that in great detail) to plans for the home birth and a backup plan if there is an issue. There is MORE care given than the obgyn can possibly give (through no fault of his/her own). That being said, any women who seek natural childbirth prefer to have an ultrasound at 20 weeks and again about 36 weeks, mainly to confirm all is well with the baby. Testing may be referred to an obgyn if there appears to be any issue or concern, and, generally speaking, the midwife will have the client meet with an obgyn a certain number of times before the BIRTHday occurs. They also usually require the client to have met with a pediatrician once or twice. Also, in addition to the midwife being with the client through the entire birthing process, she will stay with mom and baby for at least 4 hours after the birth, and then do a 24 hour postpartum visit, 48-36 hour visit, a 2 week visit, and (finally) a 6 week visit. Many midwives are also highly trained in neonatal resuscitation and breastfeeding (if the client chooses to breastfeed, not required). There really is no lack of care. It simply is a different approach to the pregnancy and birthing process.
Having babies in a hospital setting only began in the 20th century. Before that, women had home births. That used to be the norm. And, while technology has been helpful in many cases for high risk pregnancies, for the low risk pregnancy, the multiple use of ultrasounds is many times unnecessary.
In the use of the Doppler for the heartbeat, it is possible to not hear the heartbeat until 18 weeks, depending on when the last scheduled appointment was (maybe they had to go a 6 week stretch from one appointment to the next because of scheduling issues). For example, there was an initial visit at 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 13 weeks, then 18 weeks. Not having seen the particular episode(s) you are commenting on, I would not be able to confirm if that was the case or not.
I am not a midwife, but I do have firsthand knowledge of the midwifery process. Hopefully my response will help to clarify the great care a woman experiences in the home birth or birthing center experience. Whether a woman chooses a hospital birth, a birthing center birth, or a home birth, great nutrition and prenatal care is very important. It's obvious your concern is a reflection of your passion for caring for your patients, and any woman choosing a hospital birth would be blessed to have you as a nurse. :)

    3. Not at all unusual to not have an ultrasound until 20 weeks. Our doctor only does one anatomy scan at 20 weeks unless there is a medicalittle reason to do more.

      Delete
    4. In Canada, if you are followed by your family doc or obstetrician or midwife, you would only have a 8-wk ultrasound (US) if you think you would want an abortion -- it's to give a more exact date and look for certain things. If you would never have an abortion, then you wait til 20 wks when all the anatomy can be seen clearly. This would give you major clues to know if there is anything wrong with baby so you can be prepared. No other US are medically necessary. Many people pay for more US to see baby but that is just for fun. Just like 3D US is for fun. Some of our provinces refuse to tell the sex so people won't abort based on that. You can pay for an US to find out if that is important to you.

      Delete
    5. Completely disagree with the comment about Canada. Early US are very common in some provinces. It has absolutely nothing to do with abortion. Most of the time, early US are done to see how far along is the mother. I am 30 weeks pregnant now, and I had US at 9 weeks, 13 weeks, 19 weeks, 23 (but it was only because my baby was hiding some of her body parts at 19 weeks) and I will have another one in 2 weeks because it seems I will have a big baby.

    1. I don't understand the skimping either. How many weddings have you (or I) been to where the parents are not reality TV stars, yet the entire event is geared towards everyone having a great time, endless food and drink and entertainment included?

  24. That food tasting for the reception was crazy. You'd think those kids had never seen a cheese case before. And what kind of caterer thinks Limburger cheese would be something anyone would want at a wedding reception? I'll bet TLC made them throw that in there so they could film the reaction. Oh TLC, you're such cards with this show! Always trying to make things funny! (But always failing.)

  25. Hezekiah???? That would be cruel. Just as bad as Spurgeon.

  26. Why did they have far better food for the rehearsal dinner than the actual wedding? Certainly they can afford to feed all their guests at the wedding. If they invite the people, they should feed them. If they needed to cut corners, they should have cut the size of the wedding, as they originally wanted to. No normal couple needs over 1000 guests at their wedding. How do you even speak to or thank that many guests for coming? If you gave each guest 10 seconds of your time, you'd be in a receiving line for almost 3 hours. I thought it was rude for a bride and groom to have guests at the wedding but not speak to them? And did they receive 450 gifts from the 450 invitations they said they were mailing out? That's all going to fit in a "bachelor pad" next week? Lots of wedding details are getting lost in the TLC shuffle this season!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My husband and I asked for no gifts. We just wanted to celebrate. We had a beautiful buffet and everyone still talks about it years later. Focusing on money spent for fancy food and on gifts is why so many people end up divorced. Focus on love and family!

      Delete
    2. That is not why people end up divorced - not because they had a big wedding reception! That doesn't make sense. I know plenty of people who had "fancy" receptions and are still happily married. Jim Bob and Michelle put this wedding on. They are the ones who have yet to feed any wedding guest a decent meal. They expect over 1000 people to show up, yet they won't make them feel comfortable. Where in that town could 1000+ guests have eaten lunch and dinner before and after this event, if not at the wedding? You draw the people in, but then they're on their own to be comfortable and fed?? Not a good way to be a host.

      Delete
    3. 1:21PM - You had a buffet. These people had pickles, cheese, meatballs, and coffee.

      Delete
    4. The rehearsal dinner is a dinner not a snack. Who says you have to feed everyone a sit down meal for a wedding? I have been to a lot of weddings that are in the afternoon that just provide simple snack foods. It gives people a chance to move around and mingle more than a sit down dinner would. They get to decide how they spend their money. Even if they could afford to feed a thousand people a meal, wouldn't the money be better spent saving up for a house or some other future needs?

    1. When a man does what Josh did, it's only fitting that "the entire world" know about it. Sometimes that entire world is your spouse (or it should be). Sometimes it's your entire family, and you know they're going to have an opinion about it. Sometimes it really is the entire world, and you have to face that. The person who does the wrong things should consider that beforehand. It's what's supposed to stop them in their tracks. Josh apparently didn't feel those consequences were going to be bad enough to keep him from going through with what he wanted to do. Where did he get the idea that he could get away with stuff like that?

    2. Anna is the best one out of all of them. She certainly deserves better than what she's getting.

  28. Ezekiel is unique and they could call him Zeke. Spurgeon and Zeke sound good together.

  29. Apparently they know the gender and is keeping it a surprise. Note, gender not genders unless a second one comes by surprise. It seems Jessa is hung up on having twins.

  30. Enough with the twins talk! If it is great but we don't need to hear it every pregnancy. It's wearing very thin.

  31. Did anyone else notice the sticker on the back of the white van they drove to the Flame concert? It was a stick figure family with three kids and a pet.

    1. I think it was their friend Sierra's old van? Or some other used van, and they haven't removed the stickers. I guess they'll catch up to them eventually.

  32. Jill commented in the episode that having 4 young children seemed overwhelming but that "God gives you grace" to handle anything. This is as dumb as handling raw meat with bare hands, licking them, and then saying God gives you grace to deal with the food poisoning. Or knowingly putting your hand into a fire and saying God gives you grace to deal with the resulting burn. Not everyone has to have a large number of children in rapid succession. For Anna and Josh maybe it has worked so far - though some may argue things haven't worked out all that well for Anna. But for two young couples without proper employment or a place of their own, for example, maybe they don't immediately need lots of children. Saying God gives you grace to handle situations you arrive at through your own choice or lack of irresponsibility is goofy. It is passing off personal accountability and choice.

  33. Jill doesn't even register the difference between her young siblings and her and Anna's own children. When they were leaving the play place, she commented that "the little kids had a great time." This is the way the older girls always reference their young siblings; it doesn't make sense to refer to your own kids that way because they're all little. I guess Jill was a Sister Mom for so long that she doesn't even think about being a mother as being different.

    1. It was also strange how she seemed overwhelmed by so many children. Didn't she grow up in a home with tons of kids and responsibility for those kids?

    2. Actually Jill was only responsible for her "buddy group" of "little ones", not all of her younger siblings. She also had Jana and Jessa to help her out in a pinch with them.
