Jill & Derick Return to Central America

The Duggars bid the Dillards farewell

After spending several weeks in the United States, Jill and Derick Dillard are back in Central America, where they serve as missionaries. Derick's mom, Cathy Dillard Byrum, returned with them.

Jill and Derick will resume intensive language classes, with the goal of becoming fluent in Spanish. They were blessed to be able to return home twice since moving down to Central America in early July, but as the young couple explains on their website, it will be "many months" before their next trip back.

  1. I predict "many months" means 3 months max.

  6. I was hoping Jill could deliver Jessa and Ben's baby. Thank goodness for Skype and staying connected face to face. I was so happy to see that Cathy was making the trip with them. She is a strong woman and such a blessing for them, helping with Israel and their busy schedules. I look forward to reading about this phase of their lives. They have so much to give. Elli and Lily you are a blessing to all of us, keeping up this blog for all of us. I hope you are compensated in some way for this as a blog is time-consuming. God bless!

    1. It actually looks like Michaella Bates (whatever her married name is now). It does not look like Joy Anna to me, but then again it's a little bit far away and a little hard to see.

  8. My husband and I are an Army family with one daughter, and we never take someone with us from our families every time we travel. I feel Jill and Derick have a lot of growing up to do. If you are truly missionaries, shouldn't you be focused on your job??

  9. Nice pictures, its great that Cathy is going along with them I was sort of hoping that they might stay in Arkansas until Jessa delivers. I imagine their work there will be very interesting. I hope it will be included in the new episodes. Does anyone know who the young lady holding Israel is?

  10. That's great. I hope they can make a lasting difference in the lives of many people. Who is that holding Israel in the first picture? It is not Jinger, is it?

  11. Obviously you won't be doing much missionary work if your goal is to do intensive Spanish classes to become fluent. Takes years to become fluent in a language. Don't know why you didn't learn it in America then went to do missionary work so you could focus on just that.

    1. It is by far better to learn a language in a country that speaks it. You can actually learn and use conversational Spanish if everyone around you is speaking it and you are forced to use it to communicate.

  12. The woman on the left is Tabitha Paine. She is Chad Paine's sister.

  15. For the past forty years, it has been quite common for people to learn the new language while staying in the country where they will serve. You learn much more quickly (& with a better accent) when you are totally "immersed" in the language. My friend spent two years just living with a Mexican family before he started his "real" work of being a msisionary. This enabled him to learn the culture, and not just the language. He is now mistaken as a native-born Mexican by Americans! He has been down there now for 40 years and is considered to be the "Billy Graham of Mexico" because he has planted more than 200 churches, been on the radio and TV for 30+ years, and done so many evangelical outreaches. Going farther back, to 1813, Adnoriam Judson, the first American/Baptist missionary, left for Burma (Myanmar) without speaking a word of Burmese. It took 7 years for him to reach out to the person who would become the first Burmese Christian, but today more than 100 churches can trace their roots back to his ministry. They even have an annual thanksgiving celebration to thank God for Judson's service! So don't doubt that the Dillards will have an impact. They are already fairly conversant in Spanish because they did take classes in high school, it won't be long before they are fluent.

  16. who is paying for all these trips back and forth to the US? It has to be very expensive. And while I" m sure it's nice to have Derrick's mom going back w/ them, who is paying for her trip?

  17. To everyone that believes they are not real missionaries.....leave them alone!!!! It is not like your are out they doing any better. At least they trying. And maybe his mom wants to be around her first grandchild. Ever think of that?

    Anna looks awesome!! :-)

  22. @AnonymousIs it really any of our business who pays for their trips? (All 2 of them??) Do we have the right to question what they do on a daily basis?? And to decided if it is ministry or not??? Maybe some people should stop being so quick to want to judge and keep their eyes on themselves instead
Of being critical of others.. Judge not lest ye be judged....

  23. If the Dillard"s are in the states it could be because they were also filming for the new episodes on TLC. Which I think is great. If they are filming then I'm sure TLC is helping with the expenses of their trips home. Which I think is a really good thing. WE are suppose to take every oportunity to serve God and use every source available to do it. Good stewart Derrick and Jill.
