Recap: "Jessa's Wedding"

19 Kids and Counting "Jessa's Wedding"
  • It's the day before the wedding, and everyone is bustling around making last minute preparations. "There are a lot of thoughts and emotions running through my head right now," says Jessa.
  • Jessa and Ben meet with Mike Schadt, the pastor who will perform their marriage ceremony. Mike is the founder of S.O.S. Ministries, the organization that the Duggars partner with during their mission trips to Central America.
  • Pastor Schadt makes it clear that Jessa and Ben's commitment to save their first kiss for their wedding day is a personal decision, not a biblical command.
  • Jessa is reusing a lot of Jill's wedding decorations and is trying hard to stick to her parents' budget. Everyone is grateful to have so many family members and friends volunteer their time to set up for the big day.
  • Sierra, the Duggars' friend and Jessa's wedding coordinator, gathers the volunteers and gives instructions. Joy is Seirra's personal assistant.
  • Meanwhile, Guinn Seewald, Ben's mom, is busy preparing for the rehearsal dinner.
  • As the wedding party runs through the ceremony, Jim Bob says he is trying not to suppress his emotions, but he still lets a few out.
  • The Duggars are touched by the beautiful rehearsal dinner that the Seewalds put together. They are especially blessed by the table Guinn set up to honor Grandpa Duggar.
  • Grandma Duggar, whose husband died soon before their 49th wedding anniversary, says the secret to a successful marriage is sacrifice. "You really have to sacrifice for the other person."
  • During dinner, family members share how much they love Jessa and Ben. Jinger's speech is the most emotional, as she and Jessa have been best friends since birth. "I think this is really hard for Jinger, seeing Jessa get married," says Jana. "I think it is hard for her to let Jessa go."
  • The next morning, Jessa and Ben arrive at the church with Jinger. The weather is a little chillier than Sierra expected, so she tries to rent a few heaters to keep the guests warm at the reception, but she is not successful.
  • The wedding party shows up at 9am to start getting ready. After Jill puts on her dress, Derick paints her toenails. "He's so sweet," says Jill.
  • Michelle arrives and gives Jessa a high protein snack for energy. Ben realizes that he has forgotten Jessa's ring at the Duggars' house, so Jim Bob has to bring it.
  • Josh, who had a very important business meeting that he couldn't reschedule, arrives shortly before the wedding begins.
  • When Jessa puts on her wedding dress, her 11 bridesmaids are stunned, and so is Jim Bob. "I can't believe my little girl is all grown up," says the Duggar dad, tearing up. Jessa, who isn't wearing waterproof makeup, starts crying, too.
  • Meanwhile, Ben and his groomsmen head outside to take pictures. Jessa and her bridesmaids and flower girls do the same. "We were freezing," says Jinger.
  • Just before the ceremony starts, Jim Bob shares another tender moment with Jessa, and both start crying again. The Duggar dad prays with the ladies, and Ben's dad prays with the guys.
  • The wedding begins! "When my dad and I stood together behind the doors, I just couldn't believe it," says Jessa. "The moment was finally here."
  • Jim Bob has tears in his eyes as he gives his third oldest daughter away. Pastor Schadt shares a short sermon, and Jessa and Ben recite their vows, which they adapted from a set of vows found on the internet.
  • They pour their green and yellow unity sand, and their parents join them on stage for a word of prayer.
  • Pastor Schadt pronounces Ben and Jessa man and wife, and they run out of the sanctuary. After the wedding party leaves, Mike Schadt announces that the couple decided to have their first kiss in private.
  • The pastor jokingly invites Jim Bob and Michelle to share a kiss with the crowd, although that scene is not shown in the episode.
  • "Our first kiss was nice and slow and romantic," says Jessa.
  • When Jessa and Ben return from their alone time, the Duggars and Seewalds take family pictures, and the couple signs their marriage certificate.
  • At the outdoor reception, guests enjoy ice cream sundaes. Jessa and Ben share a sundae and a few more kisses.
  • Before Jessa jumps in the horse-drawn carriage with her husband, she hugs as many family members as she can. The couple heads to Europe for their honeymoon.

  9. I think TCL finally got the hint and gave us what we wanted...which was more heartfelt.I just wish we could have seen a little bit of the girls last night together. I thought the vows were beautiful and it was neat to see that Jessa had her own traditions and that she did some of the same things as Jill and some different. I wonder why they didn't show the Bates when some were there, Erin played the piano. The minister was great...it was so cute how he kept saying Ben's name wrong, he kept calling him Benjurmin instead of Benjamin...lol.Also, I really liked how he explained his view about kissing and how it's not a sin to do so before marriage, it's a personal choice. The rest of the season looks great, I can't wait! Time to go and watch the wedding again and weep :-)

    1. Ben may be short for Benjamin. Also the Bates have their own show on another channel. They may not be able to be seen on another channel. Sad though because the Duggers and Bates are good friends.

  10. The wedding was done the way they wanted it, which is what I like the most. And it was done beautifully!!! I wish the new couple many MANY years of good health and happiness, and a house full of children in the not so distant future.

  11. Lily & Ellie - why do you think they didn't show Jim Bob and Michelle's kiss? I heard that they (the parents) were visibly upset that Jessa & Ben ran off before kissing for the cameras. As you gals were there - did you see this to be the case?

  12. They are so classy. Beautiful dress. Loved when she showed emotion.....then I did, too. Loved the vows...love that they weren't hanging on each other. Loved it when she saw her ring.... Could go on and on. I wish them the best....and I hope sweet Jinger gets to see Jessa a whole lot. That was so touching.

  35. I though the wedding was so beautiful. I just was a little sad that the little ones didn't do a skit or movie reenacting the proposal (or if they did one, that they didn't show it…) That was such a big part of Jill's rehearsal dinner.

    1. I don't think they did it this time because the Seewalds were in charge of the rehearsal dinner not the Duggars

  36. I loved the wedding. It was better than Jill's because it had more fun in it and this time time the groom didn't seen the bride in her dress until the ceremony. But I hated for both weddings that they had to have security guards crawling all over the ceremony to protect the Duggar family. I mean come on what harm could of happened when all the Duggar's know all their guests and know that magazine photographers would be there? Do they or you ladies got an explanation to why they had to have security for Jill and Jessa's weddings when they didn't have any at Josh's wedding?

    1. Since Josh's wedding he has become a lobbyist in Washington DC. That in and of itself is enough to upset some people who don't believe in lobbying (like myself). But he lobbies for family values which sounds great, we all love families and values, but not everyone's values are the same. He as well as Michelle are vocal about their stance on homosexuality and marriage equality rights, gay marriage. I'm sure many would think a Duggar wedding would be a great place to speak out or make a statement on the rights for everyone to marry no matter who they love. I disagree with their position but I do love them as a family and appreciate the way they put God and their family first. The sane people can separate the issues many crazy people cannot. The security is for their safety and privacy.

Thank you for the testimony all of you are..so refreshing compared to most of the other shows on tv! Ben and Jessa the wedding was so beautiful and your love and respect for each other was so evident as you stood looking into each others eyes exchanging vows..i love all of JimBobs comments..he is so funny! Thank you for your family..i love you all! God Bless your life as one Ben and Jessa. Xxxoo

  40. Besides Erin, Chad, Lawson, Nathan, and I think Carlin and Tori, was the rest of the family there? Maybe they were trying to help Whitney and Zach with baby Bradley. I mean he was born late and arrived a day or two before the wedding I believe. Love these families! We need more people like them in the world!

  41. I just got my answer to who was there from the Bates family. After watching the video on Verizon FIOS, it looks like they all made it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm sorry, but I find the reenactments of the proposals, etc. to be quite childish and silly. They become quite boring and it loses it's appeal after the first attempt. Glad they didn't do it or if they did, didn't air it. I also don't know why the attendees at the rehearsal dinner find it so funny and amusing.

  44. Two questions: why was Ben saluting all the time and why did the choose the UArkasas fight song as their recessional? Doesn't JimBob and Michelke forbid music with a down beat and brick and mortar college education???

  48. I finally found the information on the song that was sung during the unity of the sand....

People also reported that Ben's aunt Rebecca Seewald sang "Love Never Fails," with several lyrics modified by the bride, before the two exchanged vows and poured sand into a glass bottle to signify their union. The 2009 song is by Christian alternative rock singer Brandon Heath, who had performed it atCarrie Underwood and Mike Fisher's wedding.

    Hi Anonymous 13,

Jim Bob and Michelle weren't upset. When we talked with Jim Bob at church the next day, he joked that he tried to convince Jessa to have her first kiss on the altar, but he and Michelle were definitely on board with the couple's decision. :)

Do you know what the name of the song is (and the singer) that was being played during the actual sand ceremony and while the parents were praying with Jessa and Ben? I looked up the lyrics of the song you mentioned, "Love Never Fails" by Brandon Heath, and it does not seem to match. I wasn't sure if maybe you were talking about a song played during a different part of the wedding.
