Stay Sane Like the Duggars

How do Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar maintain sanity with 19 children? In the midst of their busy lives, the Duggars make a point to stay in God's Word through regular Bible study and prayer as a family, as a couple, and individually. They recommend OnePlace.com, a website that provides free sermons and Christian radio broadcasts. OnePlace even has an app, so you can listen on the go. Michelle's favorite pastor is Charles Stanley, but OnePlace offers content from many others.

  1. Really? They have more freedom than other families with built in baby sitters. There are many large families with both patents who work who seem to spend more of their time with the kids than JB and M do

  2. Is that why Michelle has a whisper voice all the time? Is that her real voice or just for TV?

    1. Yes, probably. Jim Bob said that once he heard her voice, he fell in love.

  4. I think the question of "how does Mrs. Duggar maintain sanity with all those kids" is kinda silly. I mean it is not like she has 19 babies all waiting to be fed and diapers changed. Josh, Jessa, and Jill are married adults, and there are scads of other children that do not require a ton of work. ( Jinger, Joseph and on and on.) There are only a few small kids that need a lot of work , and I am sure the big kids help her out.

    1. But there was a time when Michelle had like 8 little ones and she had to take care of them herself. She held on to God for guidance and strength and she has done a fabulous job raising lots of obedient adult and teenage kids willing to lovingly help out- her hard work paid off- and she's still working hard mentoring all her kids that are still living at home
Wonderful mama! I could not have been able to do what she has done
      :-)

  6. As far as websites go, for sermons. www.sermonaudio.com is much better and has a lot more sermons. By far a better resource. Just putting that out there. And for Michelle, I'm sure that life is no walk in the park, even with 3 married, she still has a lot of kids at home. Older kids need attention too! It's important to make sure mom and dad are spiritually fed!

  7. I would think that Jim Bob and Michelle would have the same favorite pastor and he would be the pastor from their home church.

  8. I think the blog topic is excellent. More and more I am coming to the realization that the Bible is a necessary book and I know I should be reading it, studying it and praying more than I do. Without the Bible people do not stay on track, hence the sanity part. There are different ways to stray and each may seem justified if a person does not have the Bible to give them the right ways to go. Jim Bob and Michelle are wonderful for sharing what is essential to living with everyone. They often say they want to encourage people, people do need to be encouraged to seek and follow the Lord Jesus and God the Father and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Maybe there are people of every age out there in the world who don't realize that they can relate to THIS message and that can become the FOUNDATION of their life from now on, so all the different and varied ways of the world can be weeded out and the ways of the Lord followed instead. Each person can be an independent functioning being in doing this. This is what I wish some person, adult, would have done for me, starting when I was young. But no one in so many never did, and then there were the Duggars.....THANK GOD FOR THEM SHARING WITH EVERYONE CHRISTIAN LIFE BASICS WITH OUT SHAME. It is possible to grow up and live and live and live without anyone getting down to the basics and teaching what is CHRISTIAN to do in life and what is not.

  10. I think it is terrible that some people teach so much ingratitude towards Michelle and Jim Bob. They are great parents who have done well for their family and so many people seem to think that the older children should in return express resentment, selfish independence, unkindness to the needs of the family, rebellion, dishonor to their parents, and that the older children should not do much of anything to really turn around and help out their dad and mom who really did all they could for their family for all of their married life.

  11. I think that's a great message and I agree. I am not a Christian, but staying connected to religious scripture on a daily basis helps provide that extra boost when things are tough!

  12. Let this mind be in you that was also in Jesus Christ:

    Philippians 2:5-11King James Version (KJV)

5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

    10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

    King James Version (KJV)

  13. I do not get the comment that JB and M do not spend as much time with their children as some parents who both work. I think JB and M have made a point of spending their time with their children and they do spend more than an average amount of time with them. I think one of the things they really want to do with their children is apply things they find in the Bible to their lives.

  14. Michelle has gone over her reasons for talking in a gentle, quiet voice a few times. She actually talks even quieter when she is 'having a moment' with one of her children, rather than talking louder. So the girls said when her voice gets quieter they get worried ( they said that in other words ).

    1. Shouldn't she just use her normal voice and be herself? Seems kind of odd to use a voice that is "put on". It reminds me of Marilyn Monroe.

  15. Do they ever have problems like other families? They are portrayed as though their lives are just wonderful. Not lacking in any area. If they truly live the life portrayed, they are indeed unique. Some of us have lots of trials and tribulations. Can't identify with their perfect lives.

Response to 17. I have hunch that if hidden cameras could catch those unguarded and unscripted moments in the Duggar household, you'd find them coming up short on perfection, just like the rest of us. When we place people up on a pedestal, disappointment will likely follow in one way or another.

  17. I just want to say that people can think they are doing fine in life, thank-you very much. But it only takes one moment for everything to change. Jim Bob and Michelle are showing us how to Go with God moment to moment. Thank-you.

Response to 9- It is a good thing when people can find meaning, guidance, and "sanity" through prayer and reading the scriptures. I am a senior citizen now and I have to be honest by saying that this is not necessarily the case for everyone. There have been numerous people in my life who were extremely devoted to their religious beliefs and devout in their study of the Bible to the point where they became fanatical about it. They were miserable and made the lives of others equally so. No one, including themselves, could live up to their ideal of a good Christian. This can be a form of obsessive compulsive disorder. Some people are more vulnerable than others, like my sister and grandmother. Indeed, it is a fine line we all walk to achieve balance.

Response @11. It is a healthy and normal thing to start a life of one's own when reaching adulthood. Family relationships can still be maintained and is hardly an act of rebellion or lack of gratitude.

  20. I checked out Charles Stanley's content on Oneplace.com, and found that all of it was in Spanish. Michele points to him as her favorite pastor on the site. Is Michele fluent in Spanish? I've never heard this mentioned on the show before.

  21. @Kathryn

    Hi Kathryn,

Michelle is not fluent in Spanish. :)

You can also listen to Charles Stanley's sermons on his website: http://www.intouch.org/broadcast/this-week-on-tv
