'A Bachelor No More' Recap

Counting On "A Bachelor No More" Parts 1 and 2
    • A few days ahead of the wedding, the couple is in Arkansas making their unity candle, as well as candles for their moms. Jennifer is their chaperone. When asked what scent they should choose for Michelle, she says: “Mama likes laundry smell. She puts it in her car.” They end up doing lavender.
    • “I was not looking for a husband, so meeting John, it really happened overnight, but it really was the right thing, so there was a lot of peace in it,” says Abbie. John claims that he started planning the engagement at the start of the courtship. John and Abbie are getting married six months after they met, at the same church where they met.
    • Wedding coordinators Jana Duggar and Duggar friend Laura DeMaise, along with the Duggar brothers, pack up supplies and head to Oklahoma. “We’re taking extra things that we probably won’t need, but just in case,” says Jana. “Might as well be packing up and moving somewhere for like a year.”
    • Would any of the Duggars consider eloping?
      • Jana: “…At some point in time…I think every single couple has said, ‘Let’s just elope.’”
      • Jason: “I might consider eloping. She would say no way, whoever she is. I think it’s probably just not a Duggar thing to get eloped because we want all the friends to be there.”
      • Jedidiah: “Almost all girls want like a ceremony, and so even if you elope, you’re still going to have a ceremony later on, I think, and so you might as well get it over with...well not get it over with.”
    • The siblings arrive at the airplane hanger to start decorating for the reception. They create a massive, flowy decoration for the ceiling, made of tablecloths. They say they are using redneck engineering. “Redneck engineering is using whatever you have to fix whatever you might need to fix, y’all,” explains Austin.
    • When Jeremiah considers putting a ladder on a forklift, Jana nixes that idea. The group leaves the hanger at1am, and they start decorating the church later that day. Working with one’s siblings isn’t always the easiest thing. “We all had our own opinion…” says Jedidiah.
    • Meanwhile, Josiah and Lauren are at their house practicing the song they will be singing at the wedding. “There’s not a day that I don’t think about the little one or wake up crying or something, or…thinking of memories we could have had,” says Lauren. She and Josiah say they are trying to praise the Lord for how good he is, even though they are hurting.
    • “I’ve never seen someone who has served their wife so much,” says Lauren. "I wish our baby could have seen how wonderful a daddy he.” After her miscarriage, Lauren was so weak that she couldn't walk, so Josiah carried her around.
    • The day before the wedding, the rest of the family is on their way to Oklahoma. “Whenever I am back at my family’s house, I feel like I more or less morph back into that role as older sister,” says Jessa, as she makes sure the little girls have their dress shoes.
    • The bride and groom arrive, and the rehearsal goes off without a hitch. The man officiating the wedding is Bob Gray II, the pastor at the church that John attends whenever he is in Texas. “We are very ready to have our first kiss,” admits John. “It is [hard to wait], but yet it’s not. We’ve consciously made that decision.”
    •  After the rehearsal, there is still a lot to do at the hanger. The “light guys” end up taking longer to set up the lights than expected. Jana is stressed out, but she keeps her cool. Friends of the Duggars come together to lend a hand.
    • The wedding day finally arrives! Abbie’s nursing school friend does her makeup, and her sister Maggie does her hair. Her maid of honor is her older sister Hannah. John’s best man is Joseph. While the wedding party gets ready, the other siblings are at the hanger finishing up.
    • While taking pictures with his groomsmen, John is told by the photographer to look like Zoolander and Blue Steel. The siblings say they don’t know what Zoolander is, but Jeremy does.
    • For additional wedding details, check out our recap of the wedding preview
    • “She took my breath away,” says John of the moment he saw Abbie walking down the aisle. “[John] was just standing up on the stage grinning from ear to ear,” says Abbie.
    • After the pastor speaks, Abbie’s dad officiates the vows, which the bride and groom wrote. We posted them last year. Click here to read them.
    • “I’m happy that she gave me the nickname of Sugar Muffin,” says John. Abbie refers to him as Sugar Muffin in their vows. The other siblings think it's a little strange. “I wouldn’t want to be called Sugar Muffin,” admits Lauren. “[Josiah] calls me Sugar Baby.
    • What’s the deal with the first kiss? John kisses a few other body parts, including Abbie’s hand, forehead, and cheek, before making it to her lips. “I planned the first kiss,” says John. “I wanted to take my time and take it slow.” He had given Abbie a heads-up on what he wanted to do, and she though it was tender. What do the siblings think?
      • Joseph: “That was a different method...”
      • Kendra: “It was their first kiss, it was great, but it was a little bit awkward to watch.”
      • Lauren: “I was like, ‘John, just, just please kiss her on the lips, just please.”
      • Jason: “By the third, forth one, I was like, ‘Aright, go get a hotel room.’”
      • Jinger: “No I will never forget it.”
    • Some of the couples, including Jim Bob and Michelle, jokingly reenact the first kiss.
    • At the reception, John and Abbie cut their cake and feed it to each other. “We were really thankful for everybody who came,” says Abbie. “We felt really loved.”
    • After a little while, the bride and groom jump into their getaway plane, but not before they both hug Jana and thank her for everything. After lifting Abbie into the plane, John does a safety check of the outside before they take off. They do a fly-over, and then they’re gone.
    • While Jinger and Jeremy are still in town, Jessa and Ben announce their pregnancy and June 6th due date. Later, they share it with the rest of the family. Everyone is ecstatic, as they always are when a Duggar pregnancy is announced.
    • "I think we would be thrilled to have baby number two," says Kendra, who admits she has a baby itch. She and Joe are planning on building a house.
    • Josiah and Lauren say they are looking forward to expanding their family, Lord willing.
    • "Hopefully I'll either be pregnant or having a baby within the next year," says Joy.

    1. Just finished watching The wedding was beautiful. And we learned that the surprise was definitely what we expected: Jessa's baby announcement. The producer who implied that it was something to do with Jana was certainly way off on his question. I feel bad for Jana for him putting her on the spot. Notice that they did not put that clip in the actual show. And what about James? The producer indicated it was from him. Was that a falsehood, or did James tip them off about Jessa? That promo and teasing about something that didn't exist (it was not about Jana) is something that will stick in my mind about TLC as something that came across as not a good practical joke.

      1. I read the same as you but it's Jessa who talked about coming back into their family's house, not Jana. Maybe wishful thinking from us :P

    3. The wedding was great except for the drone. I’m not a fan of that type of thing at a wedding. Abbie was a pretty bride!! I liked Jana’s hair!! She’s so pretty and this was a great look on her. I see where so many of the guys have beards or basically, scruffy facial hair. Note to Josiah and Jedediah & John David- you are all better looking clean shaven! I think Ben’s beard is too much. Otherwise it was a good episode. Oh also, Lauren has a lovely singing voice and is such a sweetheart.

    4. All this tease for a big announcement when we have known all along Jessa was pregnant..abit of a letdown

    7. Very sweet season finale. The wedding was beautiful and Jana and Laura did a great job decorating!!! John and Abbie look extremely happy throughout, and I'm so happy for them. Their vows and their first kiss were adorable.
But I must say that Abbie certainly has mastered the "coy, shy look", with her head always tilted and looking out of the corners of her eyes.

      1. I doubt she was trying to master "a look." That's probably just how she looks.

      2. Maybe that's just who she is; I noticed the same kinds of looks when she was with her sisters.

    8. although it was a great episode, i'm really disappointed in 'the big announcement'. not to minimize ben & jessa's news, but, we already knew it. tlc has got to do better

    9. So was that the suprise they were teasing all season? We all knew?

      ReplyDelete
    10. I’m a little disappointed that TLC teased a big announcement all season and it turned out to be one that we all knew.. Jessa is pregnant. I think it’s abit rude that they keep teasing Jana about courting, let her be! And if she never does than that’s her choice and her life will be great wether or not she not court.

      ReplyDelete
    11. Why did they bother teasing a ‘big announcement’ throughout the ‘season’ (I don’t call a couple episodes a season but..) and it turns out it’s what everyone already knew, Jessa and Ben at expecting their third baby soon.

    12. A beautiful wedding .... But the drone just distracted from the beauty. I agreed with what Ben said: "Of course! Really?"

    14. WHY? What in the world made Michelle change into that plaid shirt at the reception? Not a good choice in my opinion. She will stand out in pictures, not in a good way. . . . they were not in a barn.

      2. She doesn't carry grandkids around at weddings. She networks and works the room. How else are you going to make 1000 guests feel welcome?

        Delete
      3. That stood out to me too. There may be a logical explanation, but the shirt looked so inappropriate for a wedding reception.

        Delete
      4. Doubt it, we rarely see Michelle holding one of the babies. She also had a black skirt on which hints toward her planning on changing. To each their own, but the shirt looked out of place.

        Delete
      5. 2:34, then maybe someone spilled something on her, there are many reasons why she may have changed.

      6. 7:32, are you serious? I’ve seen Michelle with the babies more than any of the other kids.

      7. I thought the gingham shirt was odd also. I noticed it right away in the reception among all the nice clothes.

    15. The "big surprise" was Jessa's pregnancy. Sigh. It looks like we can count on Kendra to get pregnant this year. So that's 5 (Anna, Lauren, Abbie, Kendra and Jessa).

      Replies
      1. Just because you want to get pregnant doesn’t mean that you will. Anna is now in her 30’s and I doubt she’s going to maintain the fertility that she had in her twenties.

        Delete
      2. You forgot Joy and Jill :). Jill is not on the show, but still a Duggar sister, and Sam will be 2 this Summer, she is almost overdue to have a baby.

Joy said she would want a baby, though she had a c-section, and they usually recommend 1.5-2 years to wait. But she might want to have a small difference between kids so they could play together and be friends.

Hoping that Lauren and Abbie will get pregnant soon. As for Anna, she has her kids once in 2 years, so it's time too.
We could see 7 new Duggar grandbabies soon! Wow!

        Delete
      3. Joy is also a very good possibility. Jill could also, but they may be waiting until Derick gets through law school if they do, and is probably less a possibility. Jinger is not out of the question, either. That's a possible eight if it happens. That would tip the number of grandchildren over the number of children for Jim Bob and Michelle.

        Delete
      4. Michelle kept her fertility in her 30's and 40's but then Anna isn't as fertile as Michelle as she gives birth every two years while Michelle every year or year and a half, I reckon Anna will have maybe another 5 or 6 more children, I guess God knows who can handle such a large family,he wanted to show the world what an amazing woman Michelle is.

        Delete
      5. I'm 39 and a half years-old, 3 weeks pregnant, and we started trying 2 months ago... So if Anna is fertile, she can still get pregnant pretty quick ! Though a family of 5 kids is already nice !

        Delete
      6. you failed to include Jill & Joy. . . .babies all over the place - God willing.

        Delete
      7. 4:59, she’s might maintain her fertility, I didn’t mean that she won’t be able to have anymore kids, but your fertility levels do drop once you hit your late twenties to early thirties, so I just meant that she probably won’t be getting pregnant on the same schedule that she seemed to in the past.

        Delete
      8. It's already end of March. If noone of these girls is pregnant already, it's going to be just one new grandbaby this year.
Of course some of them could already be pregnant. Jessa announced her pregnancy in January, so maybe it prompted other sisters to start working in this direction too :).

        Delete
      9. @4:59 Fertility does decrease as we get older. And there is also a higher risk of birth defects. They are also finding the same for men.

Although it only took you 2 months to conceive, it does not mean other women will be so lucky.

      1. They got into the reception get-away plane when it was daylight but when they were finally in the air, it was dark. That made no sense. Either they sat on the runway kissing for hours, or they filmed the departure several times and edited it together choppily. Continuity problems like that in TV shows and movies drive me nuts.

      2. The things we look for that we can complain about!

        Delete
      3. No, the things that TLC expects people to not notice and accept without question. The editing has always been choppy and nonsensical. Remember when Jinger's anniversary and her baby announcement and the family's visit didn't all line up right, either?

      4. Ben’s shaggy beard was just too much to look at. Trim it shorter at least if ya want a beard. Don’t need to be frazzly lookin. I’m surprised at Jessa putting up with it.

    17. I was impressed with two things about this episode besides the love John and Abbie share.

#1 - Kudos to Jana for decorating a huge airplane hangar, the church, and being a bridesmaid and all that entails with getting ready. She did it long distance from Arkansas to Oklahoma; she only had a couple days to pull it off and she kept her cool when things went wrong. I know she had help from her siblings and friends but that looked very stressful to me. I hope Jana was able to go home and just relax after all that.

The other one I was impressed with was Josiah. He tenderly took care of Lauren during the loss of their baby and was still being tender with her during the interview. I could tell Lauren appreciated him and seemed to be more in love than ever. I hope "Counting On" continues for many more seasons.

      1. I love this couple. Josiah has matured nicely ( except for the drone thing) and seems so considerate of Lauren and those things that are important to her. Sorry for this negative post, but that was one of the most self centered, inconsiderate requests to make of a sibling or close friends I have every heard of in regards to a wedding. Ok cool down time...the rest of the show was very nice and the drone in a church service is still totally inappropriate!

      4. I agree. It couldn’t have been much of a pleasant and fun experience for the siblings. Abby and John didn’t even give them a special thanks when the couple spoke at the reception. When you marry, your siblings should celebrate with you; not work for you. Very, very rude and selfish. Is it just me, or do any of you posters think the siblings take advantage of Jana? Remember all the sewing for Jill’s wedding? That was a huge undertaking. Too much.

        Delete
      5. Jana has such a big heart and loves her twin. John David said she has always been his "wing woman". Maybe, just maybe, she offered. I don't think you'll find many siblings who are always willing to help; decorate, plant trees, build a tree-house, be present for births....need I go on? Jana is a loving and thoughtful woman. Any man would be lucky to have her for a wife - if that's what she wants! Considering John is a pilot, I thought the drone fit!

        Delete
      6. Anon 3:09. The whole family takes advantage of Jana. She has a giving nature and they ALL know it. I think she "offers" to do these things because it's what is expected of her now and she genuinely wants to please her family.

      7. Based on the style and type of wedding they had, John seems totally obsessed with his being a pilot and his plane...hope they solved the restroom issues regarding the “hanger” .

      8. JILL was at John 7 Abbie's wedding. Jill was wearing the same dress that she wore as matron of honor at Joy's wedding. Jill was stand with the little kids in the "hall" before the walked done the aisle. Israel was one of the little boys. I did not see Derick, camera and crew would not have filmed him OR they edited him out. I, for one, would like updates on Jill, Derick and their boys.

      9. I think Jana was very honored to be the wedding planner and was in a very respected position but having said that I felt they or she should’ve delegated some of the responsibility off to someone else with different things. That all was way to much for one person (2-with Laura) to handle and be a bridesmaid on top of it. I would’ve been dead on my feet. No wonder I noticed the fatigue in Jana’s eyes and her not so bright look in her face right away when the wedding pics came out way back when. She truly is a wonder woman. I hope she got some me-time/down-time after the wedding.

        Delete
      10. Jana could be considering a carreer as a wedding planner or party planner, since she's getting quite a lot of experience with her family ! Maybe that's why she's holding off courting : she could want to work at some point, possibly self-employed and with the help of some of her sisters ? That would be awesome !

      4. I don’t think you understand prayer. God isn’t a genie. Prayer is a conversation that orients your heart and desires to God’s heart and desires. It changes you but not necessarily your circumstances.
And most doctors won’t start testing a women for issues and infertility unless it’s been a year of trying. 1 in 4 women will miscarriage. It’s incredibly common.

        Delete
      5. 12:21- I think you have to remember this footage was filmed quite awhile ago, not long after the miscarriage. I doubt she's still waking up every morning crying.

        Delete
      6. I disagree. A miscarriage is a very emotionally taxing experience, even if you are in counseling you still wake up crying every morning. And they have no other children yet so her crying could extend beyond their baby, but also the possibility that they won’t be able to have any biological children. It’s really not your place to be judging her.

        Delete
      7. I'm ha ing trouble understanding why she was so weak. Women who give birth to full term babies or have c sections don't need to be carries around. Yes, it's sad and a great loss, I just don't understand the weakness from such an early miscarriage.

        Delete
      8. Prayer doesn't mean not crying. Ever read the Psalms, Lamentations, Jeremiah, etc.?

Heck, professional therapy doesn't mean not crying either. Therapy has been a blessing to me and I hope Lauren gives it a try, but the point is often working *through* your feelings, not exclusive of crying.

In other words, crying doesn't mean healing isn't taking place. Some things are just a lot to heal from.

        Delete
      9. Anon 4:43 pm : the point was if Lauren gets some professional help in emotional healing, not just looking into why she had that miscarriage on a physical level. If she is crying every day, that's not a sign of healing.

      10. 4:43- God would have to be a genie in order for people to truly know the heart and desires of an invisible entity, especially as it relates to personal life decisions or challenges. Using the Bible as a guide is a bit like trying to use a globe as a road map.

      15. Lauren is very young and hasn't experienced very much of life yet. This is probably the first time something bad happened to her, and hence the drama and shock. And, to be so weak from blood loss that she couldn't walk -- why not go to the hospital?!!

    24. Why don't JIm Bob and Michelle ever help with the wedding planning, building elaborate whatever, or decorating? Or better yet, hire a real wedding planner!

      1. It wasn’t their daughter getting married. I don’t know how much help they would be with all of the other kids tagging along. It probably helps that they let others do the work without a bunch of younger kids running around.

Michelle’s friend helped with the planning and decorating for the last two Duggar daughters’ weddings.

      2. How boring would that be to film? Better to showcase Jana and how she can whip everyone into shape!

      3. Why spend the money to hire a wedding planner? My wedding was beautiful without one. It's a new-fangled excuse to spend money, if you ask me.

      4. Hopefully Jana was recompensed by the Burnett family! They had it real easy getting ready for a wedding with Jana in the mix!

And a pregnancy is a good news not a big surprise (especially a third one!)

    26. I enjoyed the episode and wish there were more this season. My only concern was that I found it somewhat unnecessary to have a family celebration regarding Jessa and her 3rd. Given that her due date was the same as Lauren's - I can't imagine being in Lauren's shoes at that party. It's great for Jessa and Ben but with a third I don't feel like you need big parties, showers and monthly bump pictures.

      1. So just because it’s not your first baby you have to tune down the excitement for it? I’m sorry but that’s dumb. Have you ever considered that Lauren is HAPPY for Jessa, and wants her to fully enjoy all the fun moments of her pregnancy?

        Delete
      2. Yes. Because children born third don’t enjoy seeing pictures and videos of the entire family being excited about their arrival.
Also, “pizza at granny’s” is not a big party. It’s dinner.

        Delete
      3. I agree with you, the third pregnancy shouldn't have a shower and party etc. after 2 kids you should have plenty of baby supplies for the third child. My goodness they live in such excess now.

      4. Yes... though Jessa announced her pregnancy in January and gave Lauren a lot of time to grieve. In addition, why Jessa should be unhappy about her pregnancy, only because someone else had a miscarriage? It's her pregnancy, her baby, and she has all rights to celebrate it!!

        Delete
      5. Lauren did not have to attend. And 1st or 3rd, any baby is a cause for celebration!

        Delete
      6. Please don't call me or my ideas dumb. Also, yes all factors were considered. Merely pointing out that all the "fun moments" do not need to be displayed on national television when Lauren is clearly still grieving. Am sure Lauren is happy for them. But sometimes sensitivity and empathy in this matters is warranted. The party that was orchestrated for television was unnecessary. Lauren is still crying many mornings.

      7. My sister and I shared a due date within 20 days of each other. I miscarried. Of course we celebrated her successful pregnancy but she was very kind and did not flaunt on Instagram or plan staged events of joyful celebration a month after my loss. Even though it was still painful for me as she was closer to delivery, it was much easier to be outwardly happy for the new life she created - when she was visibly much farther along. Jessa should have waited to "party" out of respect for her sister. They shared the exact same due date. Her party was at what? 12 weeks?

      8. 1:08 the whole world can not stop due to the sad and unfortunate miscarriage. Jessa and Ben were very kind and empathetic toward Lauren and Josiahs loss in their announcement of their pregnancy. I think the loss happens everyone grieves and then except for the couple affected life goes back to normal. If Lauren is struggling on a daily basis after several months then professional counseling might be helpful.

      9. 8:58- The Duggars take baby celebrations to a whole new level. They throw a party when they announce the pregnancy, when they have a gender reveal, and then when they have a baby shower. Yes, it's exciting for the couple. However, it's way over the top and with so many babies being born to one family, I would grow weary of all this attention given for every single expectant mother and I wouldn't have wanted it for myself. I don't know of anyone who does all this.

    28. OMG, they are are hoping to get pregnant! Lauren, Kendra, Joy... Jessa is already pregnant. I would think Abbie is hoping to have a baby too. Other "eligible" Duggar is Anna, Mason is already 1.5 year old, so they might go for another baby now!

I don't think that at thins point Jinger would want another baby, they are moving soon, and will be settling in a new place.

    31. Did anyone pay attention how at the end Jeremiah said like what if it was 3 marriages at once (or 3 weddings). Maybe he meant that him, Jedidiah and Jason might do this together?? Those three guys have grown into very attractive men, and I'm sure there is no lack of girls looking to marry them.

    32. So now it's Jana, then older boys (Jed, Jer, Jason, James, Justin, Jackson, Tyler) and then 4 girls (Johannah, Jannifer, Jordyn and Josie) who are staying with parents at home. I wonder who is cooking for all of them? Boys are so grown up and look like they need a lot of food :). It's a lot of cooking.

    33. Why do they tend to say "little one" instead of baby, child, etc? Is that an Arkansas thing, a Duggar thing, an IBLP/ATI thing? The only people I hear using that term are the Duggars. Maybe also the Bates family, come to think of it...

      1. Jesus calls children “little ones” in the New Testament: Matthew 10:42, and 18:6, 10, 14; Mark 9:42; Luke 17:2.
Children are also called “little ones” in the Old Testament: Genesis 50:21; Deuteronomy 1:39; Judges 18:21; 2 Chronicles 20:13 and 31:18; Job 21:11; Psalm 137:9; Jeremiah 48:4; Zechariah 13:7.
I think it is a lovely and tender expression.

    34. Can we talk about how Abbie was "transferred" from her father to her husband?

      1. That's their take on marriage. A woman is transferred from the authority of her father to the authority of her husband.

      2. What about it?

        Delete
      3. @9:41... the word” transferred” sounds like the bride is a piece of meat.
Usually the word is “given” in marriage to the groom. It leaves one with the impression of a loving father holding his beloved daughter’s hand and passing her hand on to her new husband with the assumption he will treat her like a queen. ( or else) : )

        Delete
      4. I thought that was demeaning. You're a woman, and you have to be under a man's authority, be it your father's or your husgand's. Ugh.

        Delete
      5. Why? That's what they believe. A woman is always under the authority of a man, be it father, husband or male relative if there's no father or husband in her life.

        Delete
      6. 9:48- I'm sorry, but the term "given" isn't much better than "transfer". It implies that the young woman is property to be given away. The groom's parents aren't asked if the give him away. My dad didn't escort me down the aisle at my wedding, my furture husband did. We made the trip together. My dad was in complete agreement with this arrangement as I was in my 30's and hadn't lived with my parents for years. It didn't mean I didn't love and respect my father. He respected me enough to understand that an adult woman does not belong to her father and won't belong to her husband either. It's a partnership.

    36. I thought the first kiss was the loveliest I've seen. If you are going to wait, make it special, tender, and memorable. Abbie knew that kiss was about the love, the respect, and their joy in each other, not just 'We're married now! Hubba, hubba!Let's get to the hotel ASAP!' It made me tear up, which a Duggar wedding has never done before. (PS my 24 year old daughter agrees with me.....)

    38. It would be nice if just once, one of the pro-life Duggars would step up and satisfy their "baby itch" by adopting a child out of foster care. There are so many kids, especially older ones, who are in need of loving homes. I'd have a lot more respect for them if they did, rather than continue making relentless childbirth some kind of reality TV Olympic event. Walk the talk, folks!

      1. How do you satisfy a baby itch by adopting an older child??

        Delete
      2. anon@9:17- If your priority is simply to satisfy an "itch" by being pregnant and holding an baby in your arms, then I guess adoption wouldn't be for you. However, if being a parent is your priority, why would you be opposed to adopting an older child who needs a home, especially if you are a pro-life advocate and see adoption as a solution to abortions? If not you, then who?
        (Yes, I'm an adoptive mother.)
