Duggar Matriarch Turns 51

Have you heard the news? Mason Garrett Duggar was born just one day before his Grandma Duggar's birthday. Happy one-day milestone to Mason, and happy 51st to Michelle Duggar!

Michelle is the mother of 19 and grandmother of nine (soon to be 10, when Joy and Austin Forsyth's first baby is born next year). She had her first child at age 21 and will be 61 by the time Josie turns 18. That's 40 years of motherhood!

  5. She's the mom of the family, for sure. The "matriarch," not so much.

    1. Michelle is the matriarch of the family she and JimBob built together, and she has done an exceptional job for the past 30 years at being a mom. She has been an example for me and countless other women. On your special day, Michelle, I wish you all the best.

    2. Anon @ 7:05 I agree Mary Duggar as the oldest living Duggar woman would have the title of matriarch as she is mother, grandmother and great grandmother in the family.

  7. What's with the calculation of 40 years of motherhood? You think motherhood ends when a child turns 18?

    1. Motherhood doesn't end when your child turns 18. Your still a mother tell they died.

    2. Motherhood doesn't end then, but it does change. Your kids don't need you like they once did.

    3. I think they meant that by the time Josie is 18 Michelle would have been a mother for 40 years, and of course she will continue to be a mother.

    4. Your kids don't need you like they once did?? Ha! They need you more than ever as young adults. Especially your checkbook, LOL! College tuition, auto loans, apartment rent deposits, money while they're finding a first job, insurance, weddings... I get the feeling some of you haven't been through this "season of life" yet.

    5. So true, 11:39. The bigger the kids, the bigger the problems. And the bigger the bills.

  9. That fact about Michelle being a mom of an under-18 year old for 40 years is amazing! Mine will be 28 years. That's crazy to think about.

  10. Happy Birthday to a wonderful woman of God. I do admit that I think of Jim Bob's mom as the true matriarch of the family. But I understand what you mean. However, Michelle won't just put in 40 years of motherhood. She will be a mother all of her life, many years past her youngest entering adulthood.

  12. Guess she won't be catching any more babies. Good thing she has grandbabies coming left & right.

    1. I'm not trying to be critical of your word choices, I'm just curious about the phrase "catching babies." Does it refer to conceiving? Kind of like catching a cold? Or does it refer to delivery? You would think that would be what the midwife or doctor does, not the mother. It's just an interesting phrase that doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

    2. You never know. I guess it depends if you went through menopause yet. I had a baby at almost 49.

    3. "Catching a baby" is exactly how Michelle explained getting pregnant, on the show! Its a true Duggar phrase.

    4. But what does it mean? Have you all heard that phrase before (other than Michelle using it)?

  26. I wonder the reasoning for still holding to the term matriarch. Objectively there's nothing wrong with the term although possibly not being used accurately with regard to the old testament....but even moreso the negative reputations with groups who refer to wives and mothers in this manner. I have seen too many find their identity too highly in this. Let God receive all the glory for a family built and what do we have that we did not receive? I have only 5 sons but I would not desire to be referred to as a matriarch. My title would be His unprofitable servant. I would be glad to hear their reason.

  27. Happy Birthday Michelle!!! Im your biggest fan of the show...

  28. Ellie wrong title Muchelle is not the matriarch Mary Dugger is still alive and thus she is the matriarch.

  29. Michelle is a very attractive woman. If I'd birthed that many children, not that I would've wanted to, I'm afraid I'd look like something the cat dragged in!
