'A New Courtship' Recap

Counting On "A New Courtship"

  • The Seewalds are packing to fly to San Antonio (where Jeremy first met Jessa and Ben) to spend time with Jinger and Jeremy. At two months old, Henry is about 15 pounds. “Right now, Henry’s personality is just really intense,” says Ben. “Kind of all or nothing.”
  • Down in Laredo, the Vuolos are packing for their road trip to San Antonio. “At this season, Jeremy and I are just enjoying being together, and it’s a joyous time,” says Jinger.
  • Jinger has adjusted her sleep schedule, as she and Jeremy go to bed early and rise early. (The Duggars are night owls.)
  • The reunion between the Seewalds and Vuolos is very joyful. "Ben and Jessa have handled the transition from one child to two quite well," says Jinger. "I think it has to be quite challenging, though. I couldn't imagine having two that close together."
  • When asked what they are thinking about having children after being with the Seewalds, Jeremy responds: "We both have a soft spot in our hearts for our little nieces and nephews. And so when we see Spurgeon and Henry, it definitely makes us look forward to a family one day, as well."
  • After sharing a meal at a restaurant, the Seewalds and Vuolos go out for paletas (Mexican Popsicles). In true Duggar fashion, they try a pickle paleta.
  • Jinger and Jeremy are always asking Jessa and Ben to move to Laredo. The Seewalds say it could be possible. "We're not set on staying here forever, but if we were to be called somewhere else, then we would pack up and move," says Jessa.
  • Joy and Austin’s wedding is two months away. Michelle’s childhood friend Cindy accompanies Joy and Michelle on a church visit.
  • Joy and Austin say that their greatest desire for their wedding ceremony is to present the Gospel. When asked what his hopes are for the reception, Austin answers, “to get out of there.”
  • With 12 bridesmaids and 12 groomsmen, Joy’s wedding party will be larger than all her siblings.
  • Joy and Austin’s wedding décor is going to be a surprise to them. Joy has told Cindy that she wants elegant but simple.
  • At the Duggar home, Jana helps Joseph, who is preparing to ask Kendra to enter a courtship,  trim roses.
  • Joseph has invited Kendra and her dad, Pastor Caldwell (a mechanic) to accompany him to the car auction. Jana, James, and Lauren (Kendra's sister) also come along.
  • Joe plans to "pop the question" at the site of the house where he was born. He bucks the trend and buys Kendra a promise ring rather than a heart necklace.
  • "I wouldn't call it romantic, [going] to a car auction and then to a slab of concrete," says John-David. "That's different."
  • "I would say that Joe is...the most tender-hearted of all the bros," says Jessa.
  • "I think Joe and Kendra are a very good match because he makes a lot of corny jokes, and she laughs at them," says Joy, who has known Kendra for five years.
  •  The group buys three cars at the auction and then heads to the Cross Church campus, which is where the Duggars' old house used to sit. The siblings show Kendra, Lauren, and Pastor Caldwell around the property. Then Joseph asks Kendra if she wants to take their relationship to the next level. She is thrilled and says yes. The promise ring is silver and has both their names on it. It goes on Kendra's right ring finger.
  • On the way home, the couple comes up with courtship guidelines. When they return to the house, both families are waiting to congratulate them.

  1. Straw/hay in the aisles at a wedding is such a bold choice. I am surprised to hear that the decision was made by the planner with just the direction of "simple and elegant". There must have been more behind that idea.

    1. There was. Something about Ms Cindy asking Austinto describe Joy in a few words, and Joy wanting to bring the outside in... Ms Cindy explained it at one point but I can't quite remember the details :)

    2. Miss Cindy sure is a jack of all trades. When Josie was a baby she was described as a nurse and Michelle trusted her to look after her. At another time Michelle was trying to loose weight and get fit and she was a fitness expert and was Michelles spotter at the gym. Now she is a wedding planner, is there anything this woman can't do lol?!

  2. I have just watched Counting On and quite enjoyed it. Regardless of knowing that both couples: Joy and Austin and Joe and Kendra are married, I really enjoyed their segments. However, I speed through the segments of Jill and her family in Central America. The same things are said every time: it is dangerous, lots of scary noises. That segment is not interesting, enjoyable, or valuable to me. I enjoyed hearing from Jill when she talked about other things. I will continue to fast forward through any Central America segments. 1. I'd expect them to share SOMETHING else about their mission, considering they need support. Yet we just hear the superficial and negative...

    2. At least they FINALLY admitted that they had an armed guard! Unlike most people there, who have to endure the "scary noises" on their own.

    3. Actually, what we heard sounded inflated to seem more important (or dangerous, or courageous) than it probably was. Those newsletters they issued while there were not exactly good PR.

    4. I think they are somewhat limited in what they are allowed to say when describing their mission work due to they are likely not allowed to outright preach the Gospel on this show as that would be considered religious programming (different rules apply). They seem like they would really love to say more but can't on this show or network, and perhaps also due to contractual obligations. That said, I personally don't enjoy the CA segments, although I do like to see Jill and Derick in other situations when they are home.

  3. Joe and Kendra are really cute together.

  4. could be because he was nervous..but joe seemed very awkward with Kendra at the auction. Like he was wandering around aimlessly and was annoyed she was following him. Compared to how happy and genuine he seemed in the wedding video they had released.

    1. It could be poor editing. TLC's editing crew picks what they show & edits it. Interesting to realize how the editing affects these things.

    2. I thought the same thing. I said he looks super awkward and nervous around her. I think he was trying to play it cool and came off as aloof.

  5. It seems that TLC is trying very hard to lose viewers for this show. It's like they specialize in reruns of the reruns.

    1. I agree, the reruns have got to stop. I love everything else!

  6. I still can't believe that TLC took footage of eating pizza, eating popsicles, fishing a bottle out of a river, and cleaning a football, and made it into an hour long prime time show. This thing moved slower than a snail carrying a suitcase full of molasses in January, but with less excitement. C'mon TLC, admit that you're completely out of ideas for this show unless someone is walking down a church aisle in a big white dress, or in active labor. Hang it up!

    1. I loved this show, and I thought Spurgeon throwing his bottle at the duck was hilarious! He wasn't trying to hurt the duck, he was only one and a half then.

    2. The bottle thing was funny!

    3. So agree that some of the things filmed for this episode were pitiful choices for airing on TV. Nothing more exciting to film?

    4. There isn't enough bleach in the world for a baby bottle thrown into a river to be clean enough to go back into a baby's mouth. Especially a river with water fowl in it.

  7. I thought TLC did s good job, in this episode, of giving us footage that was not already common knowledge. In particular, I loved watching the Seewalds on the airplane and their visit with the Vuolos in San Antonio. Jessa and Jinger seem to have a blast when they're together.

    1. I hope Jessa and Ben move down to Laredo someday! Jessa and Jinger have such a good relationship, and who knows, maybe Jessa would even start wearing pants :D

  8. I have 3 thoughts after watching this episode:
I wonder if Jinger and Jeremy are practicing natural family planning? They are so vague when asked about children, it makes me wonder.
Is TLC going to air a birth special on Jill's new baby?
Joe is going to make a wonderful husband and father.

    1. Same qurstions for me
Joe seemed like such a sweet person

    2. Why does everyone think that the Vuolos are using natural family planning? Just because Jingers family didn't use contraception doesn't mean the Vuolos won't use something, there are many options out there, maybe Jinger takes the pill, maybe Jeremy takes care of things. Whatever they are doing/using it is no ones business but theirs, and I think it is great that they are waiting a while just to be a couple before plunging into the wonderful world of parenthood.

  9. I liked the episode. I'm enjoying seeing the different ways the siblings branch off and how they start and raise their own families. I do miss hearing Michelle's wisdom on parenting too though.

  10. I really wish that the show was closer to real time. It seems odd to watch Joseph ask Kendra for a courtship when we know that they are already married. It's odd to watch Joy be engaged when we know that she's already married with a baby on the way. I really wish they would try to keep the show updated with real time.

    1. I wish it were closer to real time, as well. I suppose all reality shows are that way.

  11. I loved the show. I was so very excited to see the Seewalds going to visit the Vuolos. I was so sad that they only show them eating pizza and popscicles. They did a lot of packing only to see them there. Do you all think that maybe they where longer but that is all they decided to release??? Thanks everyone I love this blog❤️❤️️

  12. I thought wedding invitations ask for the honour of their guests presence at a wedding ceremony and reception. So why does Austin dishonour everyone by saying he just wants to get out of there? I would think that he couple should make it their priority to be at their reception and personally speak to all oif their guests for awhile. They invited the people, so why treat them like that is where they do not want to be? Don't the happy couple have their whole lives ahead of them? They should not act like Austin is saying to. He was very disrespectful and I don't think it was such a good answer, considering everyone who was at thier reception will see that video and may feel their company was unappreciated by the couple who invited them to be their special guests.

  13. I'm surprised how young Kendra really is, with all her giggling. Joe was really shy and nervous about asking Kendra to court--he should've made sure he had her attention first because she wasn't even looking at him when he started asking her to go to the next level.

    1. That giggling.....

    2. I didn't like the way they edited it to show the constant giggling. Maybe she is really that bubbly, but if not, it was insulting to show her that way.

  14. I sure hope their chaperones had a stopwatch to enforce that "3 second side hug" rule. Because seconds 4, 5, and 6 are when things start to become dangerous.

  15. Did anyone else wonder exactly what was meant when Jeremey said "You guys have multiplied twice (to Ben and Jessa) and I have multiplied once" ? I know everyone says they're using family planning but that statement was odd?

    1. Maybe Jinger&Jeremy are 2, and 2x1 still equals the two of them. But Jessa&Been are 2 and 2x2 equals 4.
