Duggars Respond to the "Haters"

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar spoke to students at Hannibal-LaGrange College--a four-year, Christian university in Missouri--at the end of November. They brought along five-year-old Jordyn for some one-on-one time with Mommy and Daddy. The rest of the kids stayed home with Grandma Duggar, who is also called "Super Grandma."

"She did a good job raising me, and I know she does a great job helping us with our kids," said Jim Bob Duggar in a press release with local media before he and Michelle shared their testimony and other words of encouragement with students at Hannibal-LaGrange.

"It is an honor to get to be here," said Michelle Duggar. "As parents, our heart's desire is to speak into the lives of our own children, and then as we are able to do that, encourage the next generation. So we are just praising the Lord for this Christian college and these young people who love God and want to go out and serve the world and make a difference for Christ."

During the press conference, the Duggars shared how they treat people whose beliefs do not align with their own.

"Just because we love someone doesn't mean we agree with everything that they believe or do," said Michelle Duggar. "We don't have to compromise our convictions to be compassionate."

Jim Bob and Michelle encourage their children to devote their lives to serving God and others. For the Duggars, "others" includes people who share their convictions, as well as those whose beliefs do not match up with their own.

"And so that's really the point, is that we love everybody, no matter what background, no matter what their beliefs are," said Jim Bob. "And of course, not everybody is as tolerant towards us as we are of them, but that's part of life."

The Duggars also mentioned that they are not concerned about the petition to cancel 19 Kids and Counting.

"They won’t succeed," said Jim Bob. "Our show is the number one show on TLC. We love everybody. It’s a small group creating this fuss. All it has done is give us more exposure."

  1. If they cancel the show I think tlcs ratings will be bad...they should keep a show on like this it teaches you about families....maybe their should be more shows like this one....

  2. This show is the best program going, you have family values, morals and I am ashamed of the same channel advertising My 5 wives at the same time as your show is on, what message are they putting out there to people who actually want to watch good programming like your show. God Bless you for what you are doing raising your 19 children and spreading the gospel to others.

  14. I love this family and all you haters all you have is your hate, we as Christians have God....so keep hating because God loves us and God loves you. For we are created in God's image. Christians are being attacked by all forces of evil. I rather have God in my life than worrying about all the hate in the world. We all have to die and dieing without God is a mistake. And only will land you in total darkness and torment! People who hate is a waste of energy. If the Dugger Family wasnt A God Loving Family then you all wouldnt display hatred.I thank God for this family and they bring Christianity to the TV. Its alot more rewarding show instead of violence and killings on Tv now days. May God prevail and let 19 Kids counting on the Air! If you have different beliefs stay to yourselves!

  15. It really scares me how Jim Bob says that their show won't be canceled. Although I know he's not a proud or arrogant person, it comes across like that. It kinda sounds like the man who said, even God can't sink the Titanic. I truly hope it doesn't get canceled. But just a cation for the family, please don't get too proud that God has the bring you down! Thanks for your testimony! I pray each and every one of you stay true to God!

    1. I see your point but I'd like to offer this interpretation; perhaps he's saying what we as Christians know: God is bigger than sin. He trusts that The Lord will continue to let this show air as they are a big evangelical tool right now. I don't know what his heart truly meant but that's how I took it.

  19. Although, I am a Big supporter of the equal rights For Gays and Lesbians, As a mother I had support Michelle on this controversial topic. I have a precious little girl that I love dearly and want nothing to happen to her. The very idea of someone hurting my child just because the said they were transgender, turned my stomach. And after talking with a lot of my friends that are Homosexual, they agreed with me. Children came first before their needs to be equal. That shows that love is stronger than selfish hate any day.

  20. I think the news outlets are painting what they said in a completely twisted way. Hopefully people will watch this video and actually see what they said. I agree with what they both are saying in sweet and kinda manner.

Your EXACTLY right, their words are twisted and manipulated.The news and Magazines make more money on scandels, it's just sad that it's at their expense.They are being discriminated against by the same folks who say that they are.Christians have been persecuted since the beginning and will forever be, so the other who think they are bullied and have it so bad, take some history lessons, every single race ,religion, and sex has had it rough at one time or another.

  22. I believe your show that started out to be just a wonderful example of a family with I believe 18? kids at that time, and it has grown to include so many of your beliefs and family life. Good for you, your lifestyle and that of your children should be brought down in any way. Compared to all of the bad news in the world these days, it is a ray of sunshine to read about your family. I will be happy to see your show come back full time again.

How many men have perversions towards young girls? ! So now all they have to say is "well I identify as as a woman so I'm entitled to use this bathroom. " common sense.

  26. We love your show. It inspires us to be better people. Regarding the recent controversy about the petition. We think your response is beautiful -- love everyone, be kind and respectful to all, pray for all, but voice your opinion. It is more than a little ironic that the group that has long hoped for tolerance for their lifestyle and beliefs is demonstrating intolerance for your beliefs.

  41. I find such encouragement from your family and example. I have two precious children and 15 babies with God. I have purposed to accept any children God would give me because children are a blessing. My husband and I have been discouraged through our losses and have been tested wondering whether God has chosen not to bless us with our children here on earth. I wonder whether Michelle or Jim Bob would judge us unworthy of the blessings because I have been unable to keep so many of my children with miscarriage. I have faith there is a reason and I am a mother - a good mother with a mother's heart. I will pray some more on why I feel I'm being judged. I know God has his plan and I trust his plan. I do feel weak though at times that I must not be blessed. Many thanks to you and your family.

  42. I have said before, but the Duggars' response to critics is truly Christ-like. The world - says - blast away- tell the critics off. The Bible teaches - love your enemy - bless those that curse you. Truly - the Duggar family shows fruit of their faith - in how they respond to those that speak evil against them.

  43. @Anonymous It might come across like that to you, but to me it shows that the "silent majority" are fed up with these little minority hate groups trying to change government policy, force their belief systems upon us, and terrorize those whose beliefs differ from theirs. 45. Thank you Jim Bob & Michelle for standing up for what is right. I think what the LGBT doesn't understand is that we Christians also have rights. The right to not have same-sex couples kissing on our FaceBook walls is one of them. If they don't like you, they don't have to watch, come to your wall, etc.
    So I say, continue to walk in and with Our Lord.

The Duggar's are providing a show that I can easily let my young children watch and never have to worry about if something inappropriate will come on. Love the Duggars, they have changed my life. I watched the Financial Freedom Seminar because of them, very helpful for us.

  47. The Duggars are very good about always explaining how they love everyone even if they may not agree with them. I was wondering, do gay Americans want the Duggars to agree with them, or do they just want them to stop trying to pass laws that make it so they can't get married and stuff? I figure maybe that is why they're upset.

  49. I think in loving all people means you pray for all, to find the Lord and do right by hm. That is my opinion.

    As far as the calls, I live in NWA, and know the Duggar's thru my father. He is also in real estate and a Godly man. My father or Jim Bob would not want to rent to a person who leads a deviant lifestyle. For us that does include homosexuals and tranvestites.

    My father will openly ask if a prospective renter is a believer. It is his property to rent and he screens them as such.

    The LGBT screams very loudly about their rights. Perhaps they should carry on like the heteorsexuals do. I have never heard a heterosexual announce their sexual preference the way homosexuals do.

    I pray for the deviant that they may see the abomination they are living. I pray for their souls.

    1. @Anonymous/SB If your father is truly a landlord in Arkansas he best learn the laws: Discrimination of renters by landlords in Arkansas: A new federal housing
      law protects tenants from some
      acts of discrimination at
      apartments. In September 1988,
      amendments to the Fair Housing Act
      were enacted into law to take
      effect March 20, 1989, (Pub. L. No.
      100-430, 102 Stat. 1619). The Act
      prohibits discrimination in any
      residential real estate-related
      transaction. The new law includes
      the following provisions:

      Bans residential discrimination
      based on race, color, religion, gender,
      handicap, familial status or national
      origin;

      Bars advertisements and
      publications that indicate or intends
      any preference, limitation, or
      discrimination (e.g., adults only in a
      particular complex or section);

      Prohibits discrimination in the
      terms or conditions of the sale or
      rent of a dwelling;

      Bans discriminating against any
      person because of race, color,
      religion, gender, handicap, marital
      status or national origin in the use
      of facilities associated with the
      dwelling;

      Just thought this info needed to be brought forward. Once again God Loves Everyone!

Her bright light shone all around even in dark LGBT colleges. I believe that is why the duggars may "speak" at such colleges but not encourage their children to attend the college. It is possible to attain very high educational standards when men obey and read the bible, especially KJV in english (though any version can get a person to truth..... KJV is best)

  58. A good Christian does not judge. Pope Francis once said: "Who am I to judge?" As a non-practicing Catholic, but believer, I had to learn that. Judging others about their preferences, it kind of becomes an irony. The Bible, some people have to learn, was written so many years ago, and it could only really be understood by those who began reading it when it was done. I took two courses of Theology and they made it clear. Plus, everything we see in the 21st century was already done eons ago. Homosexuality, sex before marriage, and all that is nothing new. History teaches us that. Everything is a never ending loop.

  67. I don't think the Duggar's show should be cancelled because of their beliefs on homosexuality or abortion. I agree with them in that area.
    I find it odd that they won't allow their adult children to attend even a Christian college, yet they go speak at one. They are doing their children a severe disservice.
    I especially pray for Jana. She is having to raise her younger siblings and do Michelle's work. Michelle birthed all those children. She should be taking care of them herself.
    Jana could have already finished college or even a Master's degree and be working and enjoying life on her own until God sends a young man her way. She can't possibly like being nearly 25 years old and sharing a room with her 5 year old sister.

You are doing a better job with 19 children than sadly some do with only one, you don't plop your kids in front of TV or video games, they each play an instrument and have a vocational craft, and you save the taxpayers all that money by homeschooling all your children! Your older children have turned out amazing, you love your neighbors, the Lord, and are such a testimony to many individuals, families, and moms like me trying to raise a large family in a culture that judges before understanding the many, many benefits. It gives me JOY to think of more individuals like the ones you have created, populating the earth to meet up with future adults like children of my own whom I try to instill similar values about loving the Lord and courtship! Keep up being just who you are and thank you for sharing with the world your ministry!
