Vuolos on 'Cultish'

Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo were recent guests on a Podcast called Cultish. They sat down for about an hour to discuss Jinger's upbringing in the teachings of Bill Gothard and her new book, Becoming Free Indeed. You can watch and listen to the episode on YouTube.

    5. @3:19 The Duggars are no longer reality show stars. Jinger paid a writer to put her thoughts into book form. If that makes her an author, then every English teacher should accept essays written by someone other than the person they were assigned to.

    9. It's comical to read all the comments bashing Jinger for her book. From what I have heard (on wait list for library book), her book is pointing people to Jesus and the Bible, instead of man-made rules, which is a good thing. And for those picking on her for using a ghost writer -- go to any nonfiction section of your library and you'll find ghost-written books aplenty.

  2. Oh my. I really think they need to just stop flogging this one. Enough!

  3. This is overkill IMO. I wouldn't blame JB and Michelle for becoming angry with Jinger over her bashing of her upbringing. They acted with good intentions and had no desire to harm her. Jinger just needs to STOP these interviews.

    1. They want privacy for their minor children. People like you don't have no right over their children just because they are in thr spotlight. Your comment sounds a bit threatening.

      Delete
    2. @3:17 They need to understand that by continually looking for the spotlight and posting their children from the back, they are drawing attention to themselves, including their children. If they don't want their minors public, why make any of the family public. Are we supposed to forget they have children?

      Delete
    3. Joy didn't seem to get the privacy memo about Jinger's kids.

      Delete
    4. 2:35 you guys sound like a broken record. You don't have no right to see their faces just because mom and dad choose to keep themselves on social media publicly. They are minors and anyone that says what you said needs to be blocked from this site.

      Delete
    5. @1:46 Why would anyone who is concerned about showing children, especially after the parents said they wouldn't, need to be blocked from this site? That's overreacting, and it sounds as if you misunderstood.

      Delete
    6. Joy never posted any pics of the faces of Jinger and Jeremy’s kids so she was totally within their privacy wishes

      Delete
    7. Too wrong, 12:44. One of the girls was sitting on Jinger's lap and Joy filmed them both.

      Delete
    8. 12:44, I guess you didn't watch the more recent video of the Vuolo's visit to Joy's house. Joy even says in the background that she "shouldn't be showing" the face(s) that she just showed.

  7. I thought it was good for her to write a book about her spiritual jouney and promote it, but I'm not in favor of her offending her parents by this all out assault on their cherished beliefs on a podcast. I don't agree with IBLP teaching but she should shy away from calling them a "cult".

    ReplyDelete

    1. She actually spoke well about her parents in the book and on the podcast. It was nothing bad. Jinger understands that you are never to old to get trapped in a cult.

    3. @3:32 Did you do something helpful for her, or just watch it happen? You sound concerned, so I'm wondering how you might have helped her.

      Delete
    4. Jinger was raised in it, so she is in a unique position to call it a cult or not. She is speaking from experience.

      Delete
  8. Jinger and Jeremy like attention, but this full scale attack on her parents' long held beliefs is in poor taste.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. @1:29 But what if those long-held (or as someone above called them, cherished) beliefs are wrong and hurtful? Shouldn't someone speak out before more damage is done? What I'd like to see is for Jinger to make a clean cut with her parents if she doesn't approve of their beliefs any more. She wrote a book saying essentially that, but she won't go full-out and cut ties. She doesn't approve of the beliefs, but she still approves of her parents believing them? Too confusing.

      Delete
    2. Anon 4:02. I think you're missing the point here. In order to avoid estrangement with our parents, we need to be careful how we approach differences in religious beliefs. Many people take any disagreement with their strongly held beliefs as a personal insult. For my part, I think going on a public venue such as this podcast and criticizing her parents' long held beliefs (no matter how wrong they might be) was a bad idea. This type of discussion should be held in private.

      Delete
    3. To 4:02pm,it's called agreeing to disagree. It's what you do with your family and friends to respect each other's right to have their own opinions.

      Delete
    4. @2:48 Holding those discussions in private though doesn't generate the same kind of money as holding them in public. I think we just got to the crux of the matter.

      Delete
    5. @10:56 I would not "agree to disagree" when there's something involved that is harmful.

      Delete
    6. Jinger has been very clear all along that her intention with the book is to encourage others whose faith was damaged by harmful beliefs—she called it the most important thing she’s ever done. She has also been purposeful to speak respectfully about her parents and their intentions.

      Delete
    7. @1:50 Then I assume she's giving the proceeds from the book to those whose faith was damaged. Like, establishing a shelter for them and counseling.

      Delete
    8. 7:00 she's telling her story. How many charities have you donated too?

      Delete
    9. @7:48 Believe it or not, people do give generously to causes they believe in. They even get their names published in donor lists annually. Haven't you ever seen "Platinum" and "Gold" and "Silver" donor lists? If you truly believe in something, you support them every way you can. If Jinger thinks this is the most important thing she's ever done, why don't we see more tangible works from it? A pastor's wife has a platform from which she can make good things happen, and now the funds to do that too. All we've seen so far is a new house, more sneakers, and more fashion.

      Delete
    10. 2:45pm maybe she has and doesn't release it publicly because everytime the Duggars help out or do missionary trips for hurricane reliefs and etc, they get criticized and accused of bragging lol. No matter what they do! But I have come to learn that commenters like this are unhappy with their own lives.

      Delete
    11. There are people who give and give generously and want to remain anonymous. They don’t feel the the need to to have their name out there for everyone to see so they can get a pat on the back. Just because you can’t see something “tangible”doesn’t mean she’s not working on things.
Do you let the church dictate how you can spend your hard earned money? I don’t! I spend my money the way I see fit, and they should too. They live in a average home, priced because of the crazy California housing market. Why can’t they have nice things? Don’t you have nice things? You may not be into sneakers, but I’m guessing there is something you have a fondness for! They work like the rest of us and should be able to live the lifestyle they want just like we do.

      Delete
    12. Name how many authors donate. I also want a list of all the donations you made. I'm waiting.

      Delete
    13. 9:05 Do you really think that trying to bully someone into divulging donations is going to be successful? On the other hand, don't you think that a family like the Duggars should have their charitable works more visible, seeing as how they were on TV to be a "ministry" to others, so being good examples is supposed to be their thing?

      Delete
    14. @7:29 Charitable organizations list their highest donors unless you remember to take the extra steps to inform them that you want to remain anonymous. Even then, it's up to the person entering names on the list to pick up on the fact that you requested to be anonymous, even though your name is on the check they receive. It's not about getting a "pat on the back." It's up to the organization and how they promote their donation program. They default to naming their highest donors in their annual reports. They don't automatically print a list of 100 "Anonymous" people. They take the names off the checks and compile those for print. Plus you don't always know you made that list until it's published, since each organization sets their own donor levels.

      Delete
    15. Its her book. Its her choice. Its her money. We know the only reason you are worried about where her earnings are going is because she is a Duggar. Get real.

      Delete
    16. 9:05 How can we mail you our lists if you haven't given us your name and address?

      Delete
    17. We always donate “Anonymous” and have had the request respected. Respectable organizations will not go against the request and will approach you to change your request if they would like to publish your name. It’s not up to the organization to “decide” if they will respect your request. If they don’t, that’s how they lose their donors. Organizations will list donors in the annual report as anonymous. They do it all the time.

      Delete
    18. @7:01 We thought one of our donations was going to be kept private until someone we know saw our name in the annual report and contacted us about how nice it was that we were that level of donor. That was embarrassing. We didn't even know our name was in there. We hadn't looked at the report and didn't realize they published names like that.

    1. @6:04 Why could everyone with any sense who watched the show recognize that they were in a cult, but they couldn't see it themselves? Scary. And cult-y.

      Delete
    3. Well there you go,so she wasn't insinuating her parents brought her up in a cult, because they follow everything in the bible and Jinger does that with her kids too, remember one of the last episodes when Jinger was crying because people insinuated that her parents were angry with her that she wore trousers ,her parents have allowed all the adult children to chose on whether they want to wear trousers and plan their family size, none of the married kids have said that they are leaving it up to God in that aspect, they either said nothing or that they are using birth control just not hormonal ones, both Joy and Jessa have said it on their tube channel, and Abby said it on one of the last episodes.

  12. I am not going to fault Jinger for what she shared.... years back before she was married she may not known as much as she does now... about the group that her parents became apart of and the teachings within it... now that jinger is married she is living with her husband and in another state... she has had more time to do the research since this came out.... i have seen the shows as well... is this enough about the whole thing... maybe... but a first time 1 or more of the dugger kids are speaking out about this.....

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. @8:11 I think Jinger did know about the group her parents were involved in. She was feeling the anxiety their rules produced. She knew about the isolation from other families, from public school, from other churches, from anything she might have seen on the news. That is all "knowledge" about what is happening to you. She had to have known about Gothard and what he was doing.

      Delete
    2. 10:56 I disagree partly because homeschool needs to be left out of that one.

      Delete
    3. @3:10 Their type of homeschool was different than others because the curriculum was IBLP-based and directed (the IBLP "wisdom booklets" we saw Michelle teaching from). So even "school" time at home gave Jinger no chance to get away from that belief system.

      Delete
    4. 3:10 No, because their teachings in home school were exactly in line with their religious practices. They were designed to keep children exposed only to certain ideas that the leader approved of or wrote himself.

      Delete
    5. Jinger was about 20-21 when Gothard stepped down due to the accusations against him over things that had been going on for years. She had to have been old enough to know about IBLP problems. If she didn't know, certainly her older brothers and sisters knew by then, as did her parents. She also would have seen what the church did to her oldest brother when he got in trouble, so she knew how harsh they could be, in their own way (punish the "sinner" but protect appearances by not contacting authorities). The only thing Jinger lacked was any perspective because she was purposely sheltered from the rest of the world by her parents.

      Delete
    6. You all need to do research and stop blaming the parents so much because you are never to old to get caught up in a cult. It blinded the parents decisions on how they raised their kids.

      Delete

    1. I get the feeling that TLC knew about Gothard all along and used the Duggars' show to expose his bizarre teachings and how harmful they could be to a family. I just can't believe they left the show on the air that long and let it come to what it did. I guess it was all driven by greed/money on everyone's part.

      Delete
    2. Anon 3:50. TLC is a business. The only motive they had for airing the show was to make money not to "expose" Gothard. They aired the show as long as it was popular and profitable. When the scandals made the show unprofitable they dropped it.

  16. I usually enjoy all sides to the discussions on the posts here but whoever it is who is continually attacking other posters personally, you need to tell her to knock it off. We don't need to read her rude remarks about others who post their opinions about the topics here. Calling another poster sad, telling them they need therapy, and so on and so on, just because she disagrees - that's not necessary, and brings down the quality of your blog.

    2. That she could actually be a he too. I think it's honestly one person disagreeing with themselves to start arguments. I am all for freedom of speech and different opinions but people or this person take it to far on here which is why it leads me to believe someone is just playing around. I don't agree with what they are doing but it is a open comment section where you can reply to other comments.

  17. I didn't have a clue what Gothard taught so when I read her book, I was stunned by the wacky stuff he came up with. Rhemas for example. Yeah show me that one in the Bible. Although I don't agree with every stance she's taken in her book (modesty and birth control for example of which beliefs being opposite of Jinger's I've held long before I knew who Gothard was. He took these things to the extreme) i do agree that IBLP was at least bordering on cultish if not actually a cult. I left a church over half a dozen years ago (no its not an IBLP church) that turned cult on me. The pastor was supreme, he arranged marriages, broke them if one spouse questioned him, turned prayer/men's meetings into 'yes men' sessions, and condemns all who leave as..well basically falling away. That all said, I do agree that Jinger has talked this up to the endth degree.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Are rhemas where they think God has spoken directly to them and therefore they can speak to others directly for God? I can look up the definition of rhema but am unfamiliar with the actual practice. I'm sure if they're being practiced, someone found something in the Bible that said it was OK for men to do this, or Bible words were interpreted (twisted) that way.

      Delete
    2. @9:27 The things he taught his followers were bizarre and borderline dangerous. Then there was the whole issue of who he surrounded himself with in his office, and the fact that there was nobody higher in authority that he had to report to or be questioned by. Very much in line with cults.

      Delete
    3. @3:16 True no man is supreme. That pastor I left, he said only God can correct him and literally said he was the Ezekiel to America! My family and I were like,"yep time to go." It went cult. The big issue with pastors, Gothard and others, is that they teach a little truth mixed with a whole lot of error so when people leave them, they often throw the truth out with the error. I dumped that church's erroneous view of baptism but did not forsake my biblical modesty standards which the same church taught. The former was error the latter truth. Separating truth from error. @10:01: rhema is not in the bible anywhere. Basically a rhema is when God directly reveals some extra biblical command etc to a specific person who alone was ordained to receive this new spiritual guidance so this person was then responsible to share/teach his personal rhema with others. Its a FALSE doctrine!

      Delete
    4. @12:29 That is scary that any man would think he had extra-biblical information, and then make followers believe it. Shame on the followers for blindly believing it too. Wait don't tell me - the men with this knowledge also crave wealth and power at any cost to the "little" people...

      Delete
    5. @12:29 If someone told me that God had revealed some extra Biblical information directly to them, I'd seriously question their sanity. And then question their agenda.

      Delete
  18. IMO, any church or religion that promotes the idea that you'll suffer for all eternity if you don't subscribe to a certain theology is doing the same as Bill Gothard- using fear and intimidation to indoctrinate.

  21. I am so proud of Jinger and all those who spoke the truth about Bill and his teachings. I think she handled discussing her family well in her book but it was also telling that she knows her parents are caught up in those beliefs. I don't necessarily agree with how they dealt with Josh and how they raised their kids but it had a lot to do with being brained washed by these beliefs. It can happen at any age. It happens in politics too. I hope Jingers family will read the book and decide for themselves including their parents to break away from that.

    1. @7:37 I have serious concerns about the church and seminary that Jeremy & Jinger are in now. I still see some things that are Gothard-esque. Jinger may have broken away from Gothard's teachings but what she's following now isn't, in my opinion, the "freedom" that she's claiming it is.

      Delete
    2. 4:09 so you go to their church to see all this? From what I seen online its completely different.

      Delete
    3. @1:40 You can start by reading their mission statement and other statements they've signed, or Jeremy has signed. You can research McArthur. You can read about that church in the news. You don't have to go to that church to know about it and what it's doing.

      Delete
    4. @8:27 Why untrue? Everything 2:54 said is true. You can do all that, and on their site you can listen to their sermons, read their news & events, read about their leadership, read their doctrinal statement, the whole works. You can also just Google them to read how they've made the news in the last few years. On top of that, Jeremy has shared more personally. Do you think all that would NOT tell you about the church, who they were, what they were doing, and what they stood for, without having to go there? That's why most of the stuff is on their site, to tell you about them without your being there.

      Delete
    5. I have also followed Jeremy's church and it's nothing like Jingers previous faith. People who read the comments need to learn there is a certain individual that likes to make up stuff especially about Jinger. Do your own research.

      Delete
    6. Jinger transitioned from under the authority of her father/Gotthard teachings and to Jeremy/MacArthur teachings. I hope she truly does feel freer and happy. I just can’t figure out Jeremy- from being in an Italian Christian (but oddly not Catholic) family, to a mainstream college experience, to a pro soccer player, to supposedly getting a DUI and gave up his party lifestyle just like that and now a pastor in CA.🤷‍♀️

Its obvious that people are just trying to find something to complain about. Complaining is not just a opinion. This goes much deeper. Its like every post even if it ain't about her book, it's always something they try to find to pick at about her. What miserable lives you must live. Stephen King is about to do an interview regarding his past books, regardless fiction or non-fiction, I hope you complain about him too.

  24. So on one hand, we have Duggar girls agonizing over whether or not they can wear a pair of pants and still be modest enough to be pleasing God. On the other hand, we have a Duggar husband who feels compelled to post endless pictures of his expensive sneaker wardrobe, his designer suits, ties, and cuff links, his fountain pen accessories, and his "LA" branded clothing. Bonus points if his wife or [private] children can be photographed in similar attire. I truly don't understand what their real values are. Is modesty or pretension the most important thing?

If my church's pastor started sporting expensive things like Jeremy does, I'd be asking the church office for a recount of the Sunday collection plates. What my pastor is most proud of right now is not his shoes or pens but how full the church sharing pantry is as they get ready to distribute Easter meals this week to those in need.

    5. Just for the record, in most churches the pastor never, ever handles the offerings. This prevents accusations of theft. If your pastor is handling the offerings it really should be changed.
A question- why can’t your pastor have nice things without arousing the suspicion of misconduct? Do you not pay him a reasonable salary?

    6. 7:37 and the pastors wife can't count offering either. And the only time I ever see people question how well a pastor is living with that offering isn't fixing things around the church and his job is not adding up. Especially if he is the type to cherry pick the bible and preach on money. The congregation has the right to know what is being done with the money. These days there are a lot of trust issues with pastors.

    7. My parents were on the usher & greeting committee and part of their duties after church every Sunday was to count the offering and roll the coins. The pastor was always there when my parents were doing this. He was the one who would lock the offering in the church office, which was downstairs in his residence, until office staff could go to the bank on Monday. Nobody ever questioned why a pastor was handling the offering. It couldn't have been in better hands.

    5. Not true, 7:46. Something doesn't have to be illegal to be controversial. Opinions and lifestyles can be considered controversial.

    6. Why make it controversial because in the end EVERYONE will be judged how they lived their life. Some of y'all need to remember that before judging them.

  31. I'm curious how many of those who commented here actually took the time to read the book. Jinger is SO respectful, loving, and protective of her parents and childhood in the book. She speaks truth and examines the issues with Gothard's teachings and challenges false teachers.
