Recap: "Duggars in the Wild"

Counting On "Duggars in the Wild"
  • The Duggar siblings continue their time at Signet 3 Survival School in Southern Missouri. When Jason sees a bear in the middle of the night, his first thought is to make sure that Joy, who is sleeping in a hammock, is okay.
  • The following day, the guides take the Duggars on a hike through the woods. "The clothes the girls were wearing were probably not a great idea, especially with all the bugs and poison ivy that we've got floating around here," says one of the guides.
  • The girls explain to viewers that it's not as hard as people think to wear skirts out in the woods. "This is how we've lived all our lives," says Jana. "We just do things...a little different."
  • The siblings learn how to turn a plastic bottle (found on the ground) into a charcoal water filter. After the filter is finished, the guides pass it around so the Duggars can take a drink. Some of them give it a try, but others politely refuse. "I am not a germaphobe," states Josiah, "I just like to enjoy my food by myself."
  • During the hike, Jinger takes a bunch of pictures to send to Jeremy. Wifi is nonexistent in the woods, so she can't text or video chat with her boyfriend. "It's good to have her back," says Joy, chuckling.
  • The next survival lesson is on finding "wild edibles." "Broadening our horizons is a good thing, but it's not always fun, especially when it's plants," admits Jinger.
  • After learning how to build survival structures, the siblings are told that they have to spend the night in those shelters. Jason, Josiah, Jedidiah, Jana, Jinger, and Joy end up in the RV partway through the night.
  • Down in Central America, the Dillards head to a resort to celebrate their two-year anniversary. Israel looks confusingly at the bathtub, as he is accustomed to bathing in the kitchen sink.
  • Later, Jill and Derick take Israel to the pool. Derick grew up swimming and was a lifeguard, so he enjoys teaching his son to love the water.
  • Going on a dinner date with a one-year-old proves to be a bit difficult. "...He could see the pool and was just going to head there whether we took him there or not," laughs Derick.
  • Jill says that Israel is ready to be a big brother." She and Derick are "looking forward to having another baby soon."
  • "I have a lot more respect for Jill as a person just after living with her and seeing her heart," shares Derick. The two lovebirds exchange letters for their anniversary gifts.
  • Back in Arkansas, eight-month-old Spurgeon cuts his third tooth. He is already 20 pounds!
  • The Seewalds deliver baby clothes to their friends, the Youngs, who have seven-week-old Brecken.
  • Cuddling Brecken makes Jessa want another newborn. (Update: The Seewalds just announced that they are expecting their second child in February 2017.)

  1. From what I heard Jessa say tonight, she was in Central America in March-ish. Then she got pregnant in May sometime, about 2 months later. The World Health Organization has posted guidelines for anyone who has traveled to an area with Zika. Men and women both should wait 6 months after returning to even think about trying for a baby. It makes no difference if you've had Zika symptoms or not. They want you to wait 6 months at a minimum before trying. Between your return and 6 months, you need to use safety measures to avoid spreading possible infection or becoming pregnant. So unless Ben & Jessa were both tested upon return, they took a huge risk by getting pregnant. Routine testing (upon return) can be difficult to get if you're not already pregnant. With limited resources in the test labs and no set procedures for handling suspected cases in doctor's offices, testing priority right now is for pregnant women. So it's doubtful if they could have been tested before getting pregnant. Time will tell what happens...

    1. This is what I've been saying to everybody who keeps asking if Jill is pregnant too... People don't seem to understand. Babies are a blessing but conceiving one less than six months after being in an infected country is bighly irresponsible.

    2. Hopefully Spurgeon II is healthy and fine. But if she did contract Zika, this show might actually be valuable in educating the public on the effects of the disease. As you said, time will tell.

    3. I would never hope Zika on a pregnant woman, not as an educational tool, not as anything! It can have devastating consequences on the fetus.

  2. That was without a doubt the most boring episode of the Duggars yet. Even your recap is short because there was nothing to report!

    1. Very disappointed with this season. Maybe it would best if the duggars just stick to the occasional special for big events like weddings etc instead of a series. The shows starting to look very staged. Maybe we should send feedback?

  3. Jinger on the phone constantly was annoying, not to mention exceedingly rude to those instructors and her siblings. No doubt the producers put her up to it somewhat, but really - she's not 13. She can put down the phone, like an adult. If she's this clingy now, what's she going to do when she's a pastor's wife and his job calls him away to help someone at any hour of the day or night?

    3. To be honest, all the girls are very clingy when they first get together with someone. Remember the episdes of Anna at early marriage? and she wouldn't let go of Joshs arm for minute

    4. I was always taught by my parents if someone's speaking you should look and listen, not be glued to your phone! Very rude!

    5. Why isn't her siblings or parents monitoring her phone usage? Thought they had strict rules about phones because that means they could talk about anything.

  4. Thanks for the recap ladies.
Tonight seemed to be 30 minutes of the previous week and memory lane moments.
Good the older kid's could work together and watch out for each other. Jinger is to preoccupied with Jeremy to have retained anything lol
Great to see the babies as always.

  5. Jessa had to know she was pregnant then. She was at least 2 months on, if not more. Why all the babble about wanting another baby, like she didn't know one was on the way?

  6. The way they showed that restaurant's front sign & the various shots around the resort makes me think they (resort & restaurant) were the ones who "gifted" that vacation-within-a-vacation in exchange for air time. TLC probably swung them a deal. Did you notice how they were the only ones in the restaurant, as if that whole buffet was made just for them & the camera crew?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Weren't those the taco place people who last season claimed they weren't friends with the Duggars and had nothing to do with them outside the restaurant?

  8. Really have to question if that water filtration was adequate for removing Giardia. You have to treat all surface water as if it's contaminated with that organism when camping. I wouldn't drink the filtered water, either. Even though it looked suspiciously clean for something supposedly filtered thru homemade charcoal and sand.

  9. I definitely agree with Jana! All our church girls wear skirts/dresses only and that's the only thing we're used to. Some people look at us strangely but we're no weaker than the other girls who wear pants. We can hike, climb rocks, and do everything else others can:)

    1. My ears perked up at some bad words being thrown around by those Toddlers & Tiara moms. I thought the same thing you did. Not appropriate for that hour. Which makes the question of why the Duggars contract with that network even more of a valid one to ask.

    2. I think it is quite inappropriate to keep featuring Anna - in tears - talking about her duty to stand by her callous, adulterous husband. What a terrible message to blast on repeat.

    3. What a terrible message for women everywhere! As Christian women we have the right to divorce an adulterous ( and other things) husband. I don't find Anna brave.

  11. Another good episode. I'm really glad to see that so far TLC seems to have kicked the season 1 habit of mass re-usage of footage. Again I thought the survival school was fun to watch, I was surprised that the quite a few of the boys ended up in the RV. It was good to see that Jana and Joy at least gave sleeping outside a chance unlike Jinger. I hope they all payed attention to the lessons, you really don't know when you might need these things. Survival training isn't all for doom and gloom, natural disasters, power outages, and many other things can leave you at the mercy of rescue and repair workers. Knowing how to take care of yourself in those situations can not only save your life, but can make the time much more bearable for your family. I really hope the Duggar's do more things like this in the future.

    God bless yall.

      Delete
  12. That was a wasted trip. They didn't even give themselves over to cooperate with all the training. Ending up sleeping in the RV? Cell phones? Eating hot dogs? So much for survival training. Their hearts were definitely not in it.

    1. It was a waste of the guides time. The duggars should of at least tried to take it seriously

      Delete
    2. Agreed! It would have been better to send the smaller boys instead of the girls and take it seriously. The older boys have been to ALERT training so this made no sense. It's like TLC doesn't think about the history of what these grown boys have already done and just wanted a group experience. How about getting regular volunteer positions at a homeless shelter or nursing home and show that in more depth if they aren't going to hold down jobs.

  13. The girls are out in the woods with skirts on, but Jessica is in the gym with pants on, so it is possible to dress appropriately. Wear pants under the skirts, and proper footwear in the woods to avoid poison ivy.

  14. Does Jill really think that she needs to have a second baby "so he [Israel] doesn't think the world revolves around him"? What a mean thing to say about your own child! Can't believe she said that on the program. Same thing as saying to your second child, "We had you because we wanted to take your brother down a notch."

    ReplyDelete

    1. It is true that an "only child" doesn't have the benefit of learning early on in life how to share toys, attention, etc. It can be good for them to have a younger sibling to have to share the limelight with. My parents joke about how my older sister used to think the world revolved around her and had quite an adjustment period when I came around.

      Delete
    2. She has learned to say that at home. Michelle said it to Josie in an episode.I do agree with you however.

      Delete
    3. I'm an only child and my parents made sure to teach me that the world didn't revolve around me. It can definitely be done. Getting tired of this scripted show

      Delete
    4. Great point. I've noticed that the most self-centered people I know are not only children. They're the ones who had multiple siblings and had to fight for the time and attention of their parents.

      Delete
    5. Aww no poor izzy. Their pride and joy shoukd only be him at the moment the next thing they know he's going to be married off having kids. Poor kid doesn't seem like hes loved so much she just wants another kid just to give him like a puppy to play with. That's wrong.

      Delete
    6. I scratched my head too when Jill said that, I thought "wow that doesn't sound like the Jill I remember"!

      Delete
    7. Guys, it's just an expression. They're lovingly aknowledging that their son, like most only children, might be a little spoiled!

      Delete
  15. The Duggar girls stated the can't wait to take showers when they arrive back home. Yet, on this episode their hair appeared freshly washed! Hmmm....
Also, very few of the kids abided by the purpose of this survival school ( sleeping and clearly, showering in the RV), eating potato chips, cell phone use. They really acted a bit disrespectfully to their guides. At the end, one of the guides said I'm giving you these patches; but I'm not sure you earned them (or something to that effect). This was a rediculous story line.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The Girls wearing skirts and "we do things a little different" is getting very old. They have used that line for years...if they choose to wear skirts for everything then so be it. But it is not more modest. Putting a pair of leggings under your dress doesn't make it modest. Besides the whole "we don't wear men's clothing" is silly as the men in Biblical times wore tunics--dresses! They have taken that one verse of Scripture out of context and made a doctrine out of it. So, it's a personal choice never to wear a pair of jeans--it's not a Biblical choice.

    3. A million times thank you!!!!! I hate when people try to say that's biblical. They may feel better in them but it is NOT a biblical command for women to wear only skirts.

      Delete
    4. I'm wearing a skirt today (a dress, actually) at my 6-figure professional job. It's even high around the neck and has sleeves. The Duggars are not as special as they believe they are.

      Delete
    5. Their skirts don't phase me in the least. Pioneer women crossed and helped settle the west in skirts. it's s the flip flops the girls wear hiking, farming, and in the wilderness, that surprises me lol

      Delete
    6. We are no longer pioneer women who have to sit under our bonnets and nurse the babies all day. Women conquered the frontier of space in pants.

      Delete
    7. How do they justify tight t-shirts being modest?

      Delete
  17. I've been a faithful viewer of the show since the beginning. It has lost some appeal lately as the storylines seem so made up. The wilderness training was not taken seriously. The girls not participating for the most part (and the boys too at times) or making jokes (not drinking the water, not moving the leaves (girls), sleeping in the RV rather than where they were supposed to the last night). Jinger on the phone we could have seen once, why was it a constant focus - the teachers handled it gracefully but I found it disrespectful. I'm sure TLC pays for this so the kids/adults don't have any of their money at stake and maybe why they didn't take it seriously. The scenes with Ben and Jessa seem so concocted as well. Why not show what Ben does all day for work What about all the boys who are over 18 --- what do they do for work? Other than helping their dad (which can't be a full time job by any means) they all seem unemployed and just living off their parents. Maybe this is why they did the wilderness training - to show them doing something? I don't mean to be depressing but it seems more like a scripted show than a real family doing real life activities. In part you can tell this because none of the conversations are of much depth, they are all very surface level, talking about "seasons of life" with no real substance. SAD! TLC please show us something real like how these kids are preparing/being contributing/working members of society (other than on a reality show), how the older kids are allotted money or handle finances, how the family handles finances with so many older children, etc. What about explaining why Jessa is still in that house when JimBob said when they moved in that he allows adult children to live in one of his houses for only ONE YEAR after marriage to get a start in life (has Ben not been able to make enough to move them out - surely the TLC income would support them in an apartment or starter home). Do they really advocate supporting adults, even those who are married with children? Sorry this got so long- I'd love changes to help educate viewers on options that work/don't for our own children as they are late teen/adult.

    2. The family seems to have rules they follow about living arrangements and education. I don't think there is much choice.
I'm also unsure anything earned is paid to them being unmarried and may return to the parents household.
Lastly in one episode they stated the Young adult males worked as a sheriff, firehouse and mechanic. Three graduated from 12grade that are younger. One of the older boys is still attending a Bible college while another was doing some kind of basic training.
It would be nice to have clearer information about the kid's on this blog to help follow the family and better understand.

    3. I agree. The old shows featured a large family living their lives. These shows seem to be scripted reality shows. It's sad, because the old shows were interesting. These seem forced.

      Delete
    4. I agree with all the above but the silliest part was the "sighting" of a bear. Jason runs into the luxury RV and got a knife before telling his sister to get up and get inside. But Joys says how sweet it was that Jason was going to fight off a bear. Almost as bad a storyline as a Kardashian story.
There is no story anymore. The show was about how a big family works and that was ten years ago and the kids are grown adults and have nothing interesting to do or say. It's over folks. Do a wedding special when happens. No more babies birthing (gross)

    5. 3:48, if you are in a reality show and you are 18, the network would be required to have a contract with you and pay you a minimum amount. I think all the adult children have their own contracts and receive their own incomes. Sadly, I think that's why none of them have jobs outside the home other than short stints here or there for TLC filming purposes (e.g., Jinger flipping a car bought from auction). I guess any future spouses, particularly women, have to hope the guys have saved a lot of their income or the show continues and they get added as an additional cast member (such as Jeremy, Ben, Derrick). But I agree with one of the comments that this totally goes against the work ethic the parents tried to instill when they were little kids.

      Delete
  18. On reality shows you are usually paid by episode so that's probably why so many boys agreed to do this one. TLC seems to have a hard time incorporating the boys or showing their different personalities. I'm still hoping JimBob is planning to build houses on the 40 acres across from his house that he bought a couple of years ago and maybe this is where the older boys/married kids will all live if they choose. Jill will need a place to live soon and Anna/Josh need somewhere. It has to be odd having so many grownups sharing the boy/girl rooms and I have to imagine JB/Michelle are looking for other options to house them.

  19. Flipping the channels and landed on TLC. Those girls were not dressed to spend time out in the wilderness. The boys were not much better.

You cover your arms (in case of bug bits). You wear heavy, covered shoes and tuck your pant legs in (again, bug bites). You do not wear earrings or make-up (bugs just love the smell of that stuff) or skirts or short sleeves tops. Bug spray just does not cut it.

    2. It's doesn't really matter how they dressed because they spend most of the time in the RV. Jinger especially didn't do anything. I did think it was kinda silly to watch them walking around in the wilderness with flip flops or cowboy boots! I felt embarrassed for them...

  20. Why was Jessa giving clothes away when she knew she was pregnant, or probably suspected she was, or at least knew she was going to have that "whole football team of boys" one day? I think TLC made them do that as a reason to go film with that other family, so they could do the shower flashback and all to fill time.

I also wonder why Spurgeon is getting Israel "Choo-Choo"'s hand-me-downs and why they aren't being given to the orphanage right there instead of being hauled back to the States. With that huge baby shower Jessa had, that endless clothes closet at the house, and their penchant for cleaning out thrift stores, how could she need any hand-me-downs at all?

    1. Why are they handing down baby clothes when they plan to have more and more babies???

      Delete
    2. This seemed so silly. For someone who wants a big family and grew up with used clothes, why would she give them away. I agree completely with this comment - she's either up to her eyeballs in all the clothes gifted to her at the shower, mailed to her by viewers, shopping, or it was just a storyline to have something to discuss and have a flashback. I also find it strange when they claim so many people as old or good friends (Ben's rapper friends, Jeremy, this couple) but their interactions are so strained you can tell they don't know each other well.

      Delete
    3. These "friends" took down the business Facebook page last year after people kept asking what their connection was to the Duggars and they kept claiming there was none.

  21. That was a really boring episode. I can't see the show staying on at this rate, not unless they make a big deal of Jinger's wedding & make us wait another season to see it. Otherwise, it was like watching grass grow or paint dry.

    3. Without being disrespectful and agreeing the family is great. TLC is all about business.
There was tension with term's and public statement's which is the main reason counting on exists without seeing the entire family.
TLC has promised we would see more of the parents this season but the tension and control documented isn't enjoyable to view and is part of the reason Jana didn't continue her education living away from the family.
The story line is weak and that's obvious.
TLC continues to have advertising drop and Josh has to many personal concerns to resolve. He isn't marketable and the reason why commercials won't stay with TLC.

  29. I used to be a fervent supporter of the Duggars but I don't enjoy watching their shows like I used to. None of the children seem to have their hearts into it. TLC is obviously trying to find some fun experiences to film (survival school, a resort getaway for Jill & Derrick...) but it looks like a chore for them. As a family of Eagle Scouts who LOVES camping, I found their attitude vain and disrespectful at the wilderness camp. I believe it's a Christian attitude to be able to disconnect from your phone for a couple days, enjoy God's nature, and not take modern amenities for granted. I'm also a little uneasy that they never address the elephant in the room: that none of the adult children work outside the family. I would love to see some real talk about the adult children supporting themselves, or being supported by their father. Many families look up to the Duggars for tips on educating our children, and now that their show made them wealthier than most of us, they have completely stopped talking about their views on children leaving home and personal work ethic. I don't think I will keep watching a show featuring a reluctant family who obviously would rather keep most of their lives private.

  30. Apart from new babies and marriages, the Duggars are unwilling to share anything real about their lives. I do not blame them, but they should not be on TV anymore and benefit from the income a staged, monotonous TV show. The whole purpose of their show was to show other families how a large family strives to live a Godly life. It has turned into a celebrity-reality show, without any real discussion about values and faith. The children get put into staged situations for our "entertainment", and don't seem to enjoy it that much. Growing up with TV show and never having to actually work has not set the greatest example for these children's sense of humility. They don't seem as polite and respectful as they used to be. I know my opinion may not be popular, but I felt the need to say this.

    2. Many people are saying this. There is no longer any discussion of their faith or references to church at all. It's strange how it has evolved. I used to look at them as having a high work ethic for the kids but cannot say that for any of the kids at this point. None of them seem motivated to work. They even hired a live-in helper to assist with the little kids. Was that really necessary with the number of adult children there? What has happened to the work ethic?

    5. The Duggar family should not be afraid to share any beliefs or any religion with the show. The haters will always hate regardless, and have from day one of the show regardless. Millions of people in the world, including myself are against homosexuality and abortion, it is only an issue because this family is on tv. One son made a big mistake as teenager and the family should not feel they have to forgo their beliefs because of people's anger at what one person in the family did nearly two decades ago. The families beliefs and show brought thousands of people to the Lord including my family and they should feel proud of that instead of ashamed.
Unfortunately I do think TLC have ruined the show now, mostly because they have spent this current season re-running everything that people have already seen! Is @TLC deliberatly trying to run the show down? It seems like it to me.. Fans are constantly saying they are sick to death of the re-runs so WHY do it?!

  31. I use to like 19 Kids and Counting. I quess so much stuff has went on that wasn't very nice, and now they look uncomfortable and they look like they are not really having fun doing the show. I'm wondering if the show could ever be like it use to be.

  33. At least the old episodes with Josh and Anna and his work was real, these series now are so staged and boring

    1. Unfortunatelty I have to agree. The photo of Jinger and Jeremy getting engaged was completely staged due to the fact that Jinger just happened to walk up to the big V stuck on the floor of the roof and where jeremy knelt to propose. I was very disappointed as it is a show I support completely for it's values and family.

  34. They are trying way too hard for a storyline. Even simple everyday stuff like visiting family like Amy etc would be way more interesting than these staged episodes!

  35. Does anyone know yet if Jeremy and Jinger have set a Wedding date?

    1. Sure, lots of people know, but nobody has leaked it yet. There would have to be the venue people, the dress people, the catering people, the photographer, the invitation printer, etc. Probably all have had to sign confidentiality agreements, especially if it's being filmed. The kids are being secretive about the registry, too, if there is one. Usually it's out by now. This whole thing is being very tightly controlled by someone(s).

    2. I'm guessing early December with the invitations to go out soon. November is Jessa's month with her wedding and baby's birth. December would be pretty.
