Jim Bob's Jokes

We're curious to hear what you thought of last nights episode of Counting On? As you can see from our recap, it was jammed packed with noteworthy quotes and happenings. Feel free to discuss in the comments section.

In this video clip, appropriately named "Awkward Moments Around the Lunch Table," Jim Bob Duggar makes a few jokes to break the ice.

  1. With Jinger's talents, she's capable of making the same, if not more money, as Jeremy. Jim Bob should realize that.

    2. Wow...Jim Bob..did you have to say that on national tv? And making a beeline to snoop in Jeremy's closet... I was embarassed for everyone involved

  4. So awkward! I thought Jinger's responses in the interview were hilarious! She was respectful to her Dad (didn't expect anything less) but you could tell she was cringing on the inside. Jeremy is such a sweet man and it's so cute how in love they are. I get the impression that Jeremy is willing to do anything he would need to do to take care of them financially. His apartment was nice so I think they would be fine. Everyone starts out humbly, including Jim Bob and Michelle. If JB's biggest qualification is that his daughter's marry men of God, then Jinger has definitley found one and they should be happy about that. I think they truly are but the way the episode was aired, it made the viewer wonder how JB likes Jeremy. I think he probably likes him a lot. I can't wait to see their wedding!

  5. The first episode I really enjoyed and actually watched it instead of falling asleep.

  6. I thought his jokes were in bad taste and inappropriate, not only for Jinger and Jeremy, but for his parents as well. I watch "Counting On" faithfully and am disappointed in Jim Bob's "sense of humor". Love the older siblings and what is going on their lives.

    1. I agree. The comment about " swapping spit " was disgusting and very inappropriate especially at the table while people are eating. I love Michele and all the kids but I don't miss Jim Bob at all. Sometimes it seems to me he makes these inappropriate comments just to get attention. A man of his age should know what he said was wrong especially in front of people he did not know very well.

  7. Loved the show! Jinger and Jeremy are so precious! I could have watched it all over again a second time!

  8. Yes it was VERY awkward and it was also probably VERY uncomfortable for Jeremy when Jim bob drilled him with questions like that in front of everyone. That should have been done in more of a private setting with those two.

  9. This is hard to say si that it isn't negative but Jim Bob would be better staying at home. The faces in Jeremy's parents says it all. They aren't really jokes, they are passive aggressive statements. Michelle is a gem but JB looks and sounds angry that Jeremy is his own man and win't join the ranks.

  10. He was trying to be funny but the "too soon to swap spit" was gross!! I think Jeremy & Jinger are truly in love & I hope the wedding is soon!!

  13. I loved the episode last night, its getting better, thank goodness!😊I wonder if Jeremy is not aware of the crime rate in Laredo or if he just didn't want to scare Mr.Duggar, because I'm sure JimBob has done his homework on the city and want he found out is pretty scary as Laredo has a very very high crime rate as they are so close to the border.Best wishes to this lovely couple.

    1. If Jeremy has been living in Laredo I'm sure he has much more experience knowing the crime rate of his area than Jim Bob could have just by googling it.

  14. Mr. Duggar's attempt at humor fell flat and it appeared the rest of those at the lunch table (as well as at the pawn shop) were cringing with embarrassment. Leave the 2 courting adults alone - he should have spent the visit trying to get to know Jeremy's parents better.

  15. When will Amy be on show. I truly miss her and kids

  16. I don't understand why Jim Bob acts so passive agressive with Jeremy! Everyone seemed so uncomfortable and his jokes were distasteful! Considering that out of his other two son-in-laws, one quit a perfectly good job to live off of donations and the other works for him (nothing wrong with that but it means Ben is dependent on him), maybe he should be worrying more about their financial situations than Jeremy, who has been living and functioning on his own as an adult for years. And if he truly was concerned, then that's a discussion for private. Jim Bob's behavior towards his courting daughters and their boyfriends was never something I enjoyed watching but now I don't want to watch him at all.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Jeremy seems to have a job that would be far more supportive than his other son-in-laws jobs. Not to compare - but remember he's also a former soccer player and he may have invested money there. He seems very smart, educated and beyond his years. Jinger is in great hands and will make a wonderful pastor's wife. Hopefully she can also work in the ministry and feel empowered. They are in love and I wish them all the best.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Jim Bob was trying to be funny? It didn't seem like it to me. Is this comment an attempt to excuse the rough way in which Jeremy and his parents were treated by Jim Bob? Where is the kindness? The graciousness?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Jim Bob had his time when he and his wife, Michelle were courting. He needs to learn to trust his children and establish their own decisions without him being so intrusive and making inappropriate comments. The message Jim Bob was sending is that Jeremy should be providing. Jinger should be encouraged to work and help build on their resources as a team and formulate her own career path. Overall, Jim Bob needs a few lessons on boundaries.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I was very embarrassed for Jinger, Jeremy and his parents. Jinger and Jeremy clearly seems so in love and their tactile affection is appropriate for a blossoming relationship. No one had to establish strict standards for Jim Bob and Michelle when they were courting; hence, they need to learn to trust their children. His comments were uncalled for and certainly not funny to say the least. I understand that as a parent, one would have legitimate concerns; however, he should have done that privately and within good taste.

  21. wow @ Michelle duggar! She was trying so hard to stay positive and not make it awkward. Her smile was so confused looking! Jim Bob makes it awkward on purpose.

  22. Please announce the duggars adoption news!!! #20 and probably not counting anymore after this one. :)

  23. Or here's an idea~ maybe Jinger can get part time job, or start a photography business. I'm a fan but honestly they need to cut the cord a little. I don't understand why they don't trust the job they have done as parents. They're adults who have good character and morals, I doubt they would all of a sudden go off the rails without supervision.

    1. That's a great point. They have labored to raise their children, so why are they so hesitant to let the children go? That's the whole point of raising children -- raising the to be independent.

  24. Loved the episode. It is so sweet how in love they are, Jeremy seems unphased by Jim Bob lighthearted joking. I look forward to seeing more of their story come to light.

  25. Jim Bob made some good points and I admire him for being willing to speak about his concerns that are on his mind, he obviously was getting some you are not saying that kind of silent reactions. But he was and why was it so awkward? Not much discussion of relevant points happened but Jim Bob tried.

    1. I did note that too! Personally, I didn't like the way Jim Bob tried to break the ice, I just thought it was too embarrassing and kind of crude, but I agree with you that at least he TRIED! It's hard not to look or feel awkward when no one helps conversation and they're all just staring at each other.

    2. I agree that Jim Bob did a good job of trying.

  26. I never have written a comment but Jim Bob was obnoxious last night. I think he is intimidated by Jeremy. He was able to tell the other two sons-in-law what to do. Jeremy is an adult and I hope he and Jinger move and never live close to Arkansas. I thought his "jokes" were very offensive and in poor taste in front of Jeremy's parents. I think Jinger has chosen the best of the three sons-in-law. I wish them lots of happiness and I hope they marry soon.

  27. I agree with anonymous...Jinger would be great doing photography - though Im not sure what the Duggar rules are on ladies actually holding paying jobs since none of them do. Curious. this was the first time I thought Jim Bob was just a bit too much...how will he be when Josie starts dating - I shudder to think. Michelle kept excusing his behavior - but it was uncomfortable all around

  28. To me it seems as though Jim and Michelle are uncomfortable around the cameras now, the light has gone a little, to bad.I really miss them and how they used to be, so I guess the trauma they endured has had a bigger impact than we realized. Its sad how one persons mistakes can change the whole dynamic of a whole families life, it has forever changed. Its just incredibly heartbreaking.😔

  29. Strange that we Didn't hear a word from Jeremy's parents. Also, So many of JIm Bob's statements would have been best left to a private conversation. It has sounded all along like they are going to get married quickly so it seems Dad needs to get used to that. His daughter is all grown up and should be allowed to move out, move away and marry!!!!

    1. I think his parents were taken back by Jim Bob and weren't sure what to say until they entered the Church. It was great to see the support Jeremy has and the pride he has earned for his efforts by his parents. That's something that resonates after more word's from Jim Bob.
It was obvious Michelle saw it.

  31. I thought the shows great. I also thought the editor did a great job of editing the episode together. I found Jim Bob and Jeremy's dinner conversation very entertaining. I loved it at the end when Jeremy said he was going back to the pawnshop to learn how to barter and then he was going to call Jim Bob back and say we are getting married next month or I'm out of here. Of course everyone laugh.

  32. I think Jim Bob is taking his responsibilities as a father seriously. So many fathers don't. I love the segment with John David and Joy-Anna, it was nice to see them together.

  33. Note that the camera crew chooses the clips & edits it. They should have left out the create spit moment. It's in what they choose for footage. The Duggars don't choose the footage from the trip. I enjoy seeing the family but wanted to point out TLC crew influences greatly how the show comes across (think Jill seeming to not share if she's pregnant or not last week--that was in how it was edited possibly to seem suspensful. It wasn't Jill as the crew created the clip from a lengthier footage. Love the show.

  37. I loved last nights episode! I thought it was funny that Jeremy got stumped by Jim Bobs questions lol! I just love the Dugger family and I really enjoy watching your lives. I learn so much and take away things that I can apply in my family's life. I love how you court and are never alone to help keep your children pure for marriage. I am going to do that with my children. You guys are so awesome and such a joy to watch every week.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think this is the first Duggar courtship we've watched where the adult child is really thinking for herself and while still honoring her parents, shes very much making her own choices. It's neat to see her assert herself.

As for JimBob, I love the guy, and his heart means well, but I think he lacks tact and etiquette. It was not the time for him to be asking those questions, it should have been done in private. This should have been a time to enjoy each other's company and have some fun, not talk about money, that was just so tacky. Jeremy is a gracious man.

I was slightly mortified for the Vuolos and I don't think the Duggars made that great of a first impression on them.

I agree with other commenters that this was the first episode that held my attention. Although the graduation scene was a little boring and even JoyAnna flying was a little boring. This isn't the Duggars fault, just seems this new show has really weak story lines and I wonder who from the original production crew is involved. I think we all really miss seeing the rest of the family, especially Anna.

  39. Jinger is 22 years old... and it sort of rubs me the wrong way when Jim Bob keeps talking about her and Jeremy moving "too fast". She is a grown adult. At one point he said something about their timing being "negotiable". I understand respecting your parents, but as two adults, their plan and timing regarding getting married shouldn't have to be "negotiated" with Jinger's father. Jeremy's parents really seemed lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I am very happy for Jinger and Jeremy that they have found each other, but I didn't like the episode at all which was mostly due to Jim Bob. I just couldn't find the humor in his comments. I do hope that those awkward and partially rude comments were scripted by the producers and don't reflect Jim Bob's real personality. I would have liked to see the Duggar parents treat their daughter and future son in law more like adults and less like teenagers.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jim Bob did go a little overboard with his questions towards Jeremy, but ourather country needs more dads being overprotective of their children. We already see plenty of damage when parents allow their kids to run rampant, so Jim Bob taking care of his daughter is just fine. Jeremy probably realizes this, and he'll get along fine with Jim Bob. God bless the Duggars.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Saying Jim Bob was joking a lot was misinterpreting Jim Bob's paternal concern for his daughters future. The father should talk straight about what he is concerned about, that is his position in his daughters life. Why were they all
laughing it off as being a bunch of jokes?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I liked this episode. I felt that the conversation at the restaurant seemed awkward, but I think it was edited to look that way. Editing can totally change the way a scene plays out, and the way it was cut I almost wondered if the producers were trying to make Jim Bob look bad. I miss hearing more from Jim Bob and Michelle on the show.

  44. It was ackward, but I think my dad was similar in the same situation. Jinger and Jeremy do seem like they're moving pretty fast. It's important to listen to advice, especially from those who know you well and who have a lot of experience.

  45. I have to say that JB's comments were often awkward and in poor taste. Michelle kept excusing his comments which indicated that, perhaps, even she felt they were out of place. Jeremy is his own man and probably JB feels threatened by that. Thankful for Jinger to be marrying such a top notch guy and I hope they don't live near the Duggar clan. She needs space to figure out her life with Jeremy. I wish Jinger and Jeremy all the richest blessings in their future together!

  46. Great episode last night. Jeremy and Jinger are so in love Daddy wants to slow it down, but they are like a tidal wave! I am happy for them.

  47. I loved the Duggars. Wish they were back on except Josh unless he told what happened and showed them going to professional c. But Jeremy and Jinger are so in love. His jokes shouldn't been in front of his family. I'm sure Jeremy has a good savings account from being a pro hockey player. Jinger could be a great photographer and she also is a great pianoest. I wish they had showed more of that on the show. I have saw her playing the piano on youtube amazing. But I felt like he likes making them unconfrontable like the other 2 son n laws. I think he wants them to know I'm in control till you marry. But I love the show and the duggars. Please keep them on tv

    ReplyDelete
  48. I really think the episode was edited by the producers to make it seem more awkward than it actually was, although I do think it was probably a bit awkward. I think Jim Bob has better sense and better manners than to come across as controlling as he did, but the producers probably thought it would strike the audience as funny. Some of it wasn't, however. I think that Michelle and Jeremy's parents probably contributed to the conversations more than what was shown. Again, the tape was edited to focus on the couple and Jim Bob's part in all of it. Probably not the best decision. : )

  49. Jim Bob cracks me up! I love his sense of humor, and really look to him and Michelle as wise people to learn from about marriage and raising kids. And I like his ability to be able to ask the tough questions, it'd be awkward to ask them in public or private, but by asking in public he gets to see how Jeremy reacts under pressure.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Who else questions their prospective son-in-law in public and for the cameras? It's not normal and I think the way Jim Bob went about it was insulting to both Jeremy (a grown man) and his parents. I felt like Jim Bob was implying that Jeremy's parents hadn't taught him anything about finances and being responsible. It was quite awkward.

      Delete
    2. Jinger has said before that she values her Mom and Dads opinion on things, especially someone she'll be spending the rest of her life with. I mean, marriage is a pretty big deal so Jim Bob being her dad has a responsibility to his daughter to check him out first. I think it's great. Wouldn't it be great if parents nowadays did what they're doing, which is looking out for their kids? They did spend 20+ years raising her and love her very much, why wouldn't they if she wants them too?

      Delete
    3. I agree that Jim Bob's way was insulting. Also, he makes his daughter's relationship look like a business deal. I understand that parents may be worried about their daughter's future, but there are better ways to go about it.

  50. I can't help but think, what would have happened in this restaurant when their server took their orders and Jeremy ordered a beer. Does anyone know if Jeremy believes that drinking any alcohol at any time is a sin?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think any of the Duggar children would tolerate that frankly. I do remember in a video where Jeremy displayed his testimony that he had partied and done all that then turned to the Lord. However, he never, to my knowledge, spoke about alcohol specifically. I'd be willing to bet he doesn't drink anymore if he ever did. The bible is pretty specific about alcohol or as its usually referred "Strong Drink".

      God Bless

      Delete
    2. So silly...drinking the alcohol itself is not a sin. The sin comes from excessive drinking and what you do after the drink. There's nothing wrong with Jeremy (or Ben or Derrick) enjoying a beer when they come home from work.

    3. Proverbs 23:31-32
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
The first verse comments about "when it is red, when it moveth itself aright" this refers to the fermentation process of making alcohol. The second verse shows common effects of alcohol. Many believe this attests to the fact that the bible teaches that alcoholic beverages are not to be consumed. Many state that there was consumption of wine in the New Testament but this was clearly non alcoholic wine as the bible follows a pattern of a concept called first mention. The first time the bible mentions a subject that is the stance morally that it will take from Theron out with no exceptions. When God warns against alcoholic consumption the first time, this means he will not change his mind. Jesus being the son of God would clearly not condone alcohol seeing him (his father) was against it. This is the stance many Christians take and why many Christians abstain from alcohol consumption. I am in no way trying to engage you in a heated discussion nor am I discrediting your opinion, for you are entitled to it, I am just stating where the Duggars and most Christians stand on this subject so you may be able to see some of the reasons they do the things they do.

      Delete
    4. anonymous Sept 16 @ 2:52AM, I don't think the original poster was stating that drinking alcohol is a sin, I think he or she was asking the question if anyone knew if Jeremy believed it to be a sin to drink alcohol.

      Delete
    5. Jesus changed water into wine as his very first miracle, and I don't believe that most Christians see drinking wine as a sin -- only being drunk, as the Bible warns against.

      Delete
    6. Drinking alcohol is not a sin. Being good Christians isn't about keeping yourself sheltered from the real world and respecting the practical rules that were written for the society of more than 2000 years ago.
Certain "rules" are still fundamental, like love and respect for one another, being a good samaritan and things like that (I'm simplifying a lot, I know), but others, like practical everyday life norms are surpassed by times and aren't important anyway. Like covering up to your knees, for example. Do you think that the Duggar daughters would be different people if their skirts were 10 cm shorter?
I hope this comments gets published because that's something that's close to my heart.

      Delete
    7. Anonymous Sep 17, 2:57 I have to disagree with you on Biblical grounds. In John 15:19 God tells us that we are part of the world, but we are no longer of the world. There is a major difference between sheltering yourself from the world and being of the world. Modesty is by no means outdated nor are most of the old testament teachings. Sure many of the old Continent laws were over written by the death and resurrection of Jesus, but things like modesty aren't among them. 1 Corinthians 8:11-13 reads "And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? But when thus sin against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble." This verse is key in my life and it illustrates that as Christians we must be attentive to how our actions effect others. Regardless of whether it is biblically permissible we can cause others to sin and it better to do without for the sake of others. I think the Duggar girls dress length does not define them, but they chose this because they do not want to stumble others. Alcohol is in this same space, we could argue up and down about whether today's alcohol is ok according to the bible, but it is an abusive substance. This is why I choose not to drink, to the best of my abilities I keep my testimony in good standard and I hope not to stumble my brother.

      God Bless

  51. I loved this show and Jim Bob's humor is great. I think the producers probably picked out the best scenes for the show. I think Jim Bob asked all the right questions, and apparently, by Jeremy's lack of response, he hadn't thought about these things. I think Jim Bob asked the questions that needed to be asked and adding humor makes it not so tough. They admit themselves, they are on the fast track, and Jinger (and her siblings) admit she isn't "all there". Part of the reason they "court" is to ask these things before they get so twitterpated they can't think straight. Good on ya' Jim Bob-you're a good Dad! I love all the scenes where they make faces about the spicy candy. That was cute. I can't wait for next week's episode where Jeremy surprises her at the taco place.

  52. This group of people believe that Jesus didn't change the water in to wine, but in to grape juice, unfermented juice, and that it wasn't alchoholic....Mr. Keller explained that to us before Josh and Anna's wedding. I find it the miracle being water turning in to wine without the fermentation time, which is quite lengthy. With all of the unsanitary water at that time, they had to had fermented drinks to kill any bacteria in it first. The alcohol disinfects the beverage. I personally believe these people are mistaken and it was turned in to wine. I would like to know what Jeremy's belief is about alcohol consumption., wearing pants, women working AT ALL, etc.

  53. I think it's obvious Jim Bob and Jeremy have built a friendship and have a good foundation for some light hearted joking around. I think Jim Bob spends time talking with and getting to know each prospective son-in-law first before the girls officially start courting. Loved this episode and am very happy for Jinger and Jeremy!

  54. I don't like Jimbob but he has every right to ask about a 29 year old mans ability to support his daughter. How many more people is Jimbob suppose to support? Ben Josh Derick and their families plus all the single adults still living in his home. The tv gravy train is gone and those days are over. It's back to three bedroom houses and church donations for his daughters just like Michelle had to suffer through in the old days

  55. What would have been a better episode is just the Vuolos, Jeremy and hunger. I would like to hear their counsel for the couple. And when jimbob comments on size of apartment I just shake my head since he had over a dozen children in a little over 1000 sq ft 3 be home before moving into current home. And that sign at church nursery that says no children in closet, well jetrjetremy should have had that on his closet at apt. Maybe jimbob wouldn't have went in and announced to world his perceived scent of the space.
