40 Duggars and Counting

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar

The Duggar family is growing in leaps and bounds! After Joseph and Kendra Duggar welcome their son, Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo give birth to their daughter, and Josiah Duggar marries Lauren Swanson, there will be 40 Duggars...and counting! When do you think they will hit 50 members?

For fun, let's look back at how quickly the family has grown...

2007: 19 Duggars (2 parents, 17 kids)
2008: 21 Duggars
2009: 23 Duggars
2010: 23 Duggars
2011: 24 Duggars
2012: 24 Duggars
2013: 25 Duggars
2014: 27 Duggars
2015: 30 Duggars
2016: 31 Duggars
2017: 36 Duggars
2018: 40 Duggars (or more?)

  2. There is more to life than reproduction. What about the children and grandchildren they already have? When constantly looking to the future and obsessing about numbers of offspring, the family that already exists is diminished and overlooked. The Duggars already have some history that illustrates they were perhaps spread too thin with their large family and unable to give their children the proper level of attention. Even still, they have to bring in outside tutors and help to care for the young children they have. Let's stop focusing on volume of Duggars, and instead focus on people.

    5. A lot of people use tutors. There is nothing wrong with getting additional help for your students. I know people who tutor kids who are in public/ Christian school all day.

It is interesting to see how the family is growing. All of the grandparents that I know brag about how many grandchildren they have, but they also individually care about each one. No one is obsessing about the numbers. It is just amazing to think of how many grandchildren there could be in this family.

    6. It's the volume of Duggars that brought them to getting a TV show in the first place. I agree with you - relationships within the existing members should be the emphasis and not just how many more babies are there potentially going to be born.

    7. Anyone who sends their child to school or daycare is using outside tours and care for young ones. I see this in families with only 1 or 2 children. So to say they are stretched too thin because they may use tutors or care for younger ones has nothing to do with the size of their family. They place more value on people than most of America.

    9. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with looking to the future and the growth of your family, it doesn’t diminish the importance of whose already currently in the family in any way. The current members of the family are obviously very well loved and looked after as well. For me personally, I believe the Duggar’s and Bates’ get so much criticism because they have done well. They’re raising their children to be great citizens and godly men and women by following God’s Word and not the secular way of raising children. God has used both of these families to open my eyes about certain issues I’d never given much thought to before. I’m sure it isn’t easy to have your life so transparent and forthcoming to be picked apart, but I for one am very grateful to them for what they’ve done.

    13. 1:48- Please define the "secular way" of raising children. It sounds like a convenient stereotype, without having any sound research to back it up.

  7. Why can't you include Tyler in the picture of the Duggar's? He's part of the family, for now, as far as I'm concerned and it sure would make him feel like part of the family.

    1. This is often the rule for children in Foster care. It may not be up to the family but up to the court on those matters.

    2. I was thinking the same thing.

    3. Jean: While Tyler is considered a part of the family he is not legally a Duggar. The Duggars have guardianship of him and we do not know the legalities involved in that. The family has an obligation to protect this young boys privacy as hopefully he will return to his real mom in the future, he has already had too much exposure imo.

    4. They might not be allowed to for privacy reasons.

    5. It is against the rules. He has his own family his mom.

    6. Here in our state, we are not allowed to show foster/guardianship children in social media photos. Its really sad for me, because they're my KIDS even if I can't show them.

    7. He's not in foster care. And they've showed him on TV.

    2. No, when we say they're Duggars, we're talking in the sense of a family tree. Have you ever seen a family tree? Spouses are mostly definitely included. Just like the married Duggars' kids are also on their spouses' family trees.

  12. Based on current growth rate, (easily) by October 2020.

-Anna has kids spaced at 8, 6, 4, 2 &0. It seems fair to speculate that within 2.5 years she may well have had another and even be pregnant with the one after.
-Jill conceived Sam around 15months after C-section delivery with Israel. Following the same pattern (assuming they still want a large family) she will be pregnant again some time next year.
-Jess had 2 kids within 2.5years of her wedding. Henry is already over a year old so she may discover she is expecting at any time and, if they still have the desire to adopt, they may even add 2 or 3 kids within another 2.5years.
-Jinger talks a lot about her relationship with Jess, how close they are given the short gap in age so I'm guessing she will want the same for her daughter and will look to have a second soon after the first. She may even have another 2 within 2.5years if she follows her mom's example.
-Kendra is still on her first but she and Joseph talked of their desire for God to direct their family size at their bachelor/bachelorette party so, safe to assume they will have at least one more within 2.5years. Based on how soon after marriage she was pregnant, possibly 2.
-Joy- After her C-section delivery she will probably wait a while on Doctors advice. If she follows Jill's example she will probably have another in about 18 months-2years time. Depending on natural delivery vs. C-section, she could even be pregnant with a third within 2.5years.
-Lauren. No Duggar daughter/ daughter-in-law has gone beyond around a year of marriage before expecting so, following the same pattern as Josiah's siblings, they are likely to have one or two (e.g. Jess) kids within the next 2.5years.

This is not even taking into account the current rate of weddings (app. 2 per year) and that the Duggars' have 4 (soon to be 5) adult children of marriageable age. According to Duggar time, it is easily possible to court, marry and be expecting within 18months.

-In other words, it is possible (although quite unlikely) that the Duggars could hit 60 family members (including grand-Duggars who are expected) by October 2020.

  17. Wasn't there 5 in 2017? Henry, Mason, Samuel, Austin and Kendra? So Gideon is 41, unless we count Tyler then it would be 42. Then with Jinger and Kendra's babies that is 43, and 44. Adding Lauren that is 45????? Assuming no more babies this year but next year will be big....Jessa, Anna, Jill, Joy, Kendra, Lauren and Jinger could all be pregnant. Then if there is even one marriage from John David, Jana, Jed, Jer or Jason then we have vaulted past 50. Not to mention if someone else marries by Feb next year we could have another baby by December 2019.

    1. Oooh, that would be sooo cool if all of the daughters/daughters-in-law were pregnant next year!! Even better if they were all overlapping and could take one giant baby bump photo!

    2. It's highly unlikely (if she follows medical advice) that Joy will be pregnant next year. It's highly dangerous to conceive too soon after a caesarean section due to the natural stretching of the uterus during pregnancy and the significant danger of uterine ruptures occurring as a result. As far as I am aware, the standard advice is to wait 2 years after the C-section before having another child. Israel was around 16months before Jill conceived Sam so they were almost exactly 2years apart.

      Delete
    3. Anon @ 4:11 I'm not sure the Duggars seek medical advice regarding pregnancies, or if they do they don't seem to follow it looking at the sisters track record!

      19 kids
      6 in-law kids
1 soon to be in-law kid
      10 grandkids
      2 grandkids on the way

2+19=21 21+6=27 27+1=28 28+10=38 38+2=40 Duggars once Josiah is married and Kendra & Jinger give birth

  18. Why does it bother you, it's their lives, not your's? I am sure you would not like them to tell you how to live your live. And they way you see it might be the way it is! Would you like others to gossip about your family! If you don't like their way of life stay of their social media or are you the type of person that you think you know what is right for everyone else?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Let me calculate, LOL...

2019: 5 babies (Jessa, Jill, Anna, Lauren, Joy); total=45
2020: 2 babies (Kendra, Jinger); 1 spouse (Jana or John David); 47 total
2021: 6 babies (Jessa, Jill, Anna, Lauren, Joy, Jana/John David’s wife); 1 spouse (Jana or John David or Jed or Jer); 54 total

So my guess is sometime in 2021!

  22. I would love to hear an in depth interview from Jana. Is she truly unhappy as some people think? Does she have any plans? I’d also love to hear unedited answers from JB. Does he really feel a 28 yr old shouldn’t have a life of her own choosing ?
    So many questions ....

    1. She was asked during one of the sit down interviews for the show not long ago about her future plans. She looked uncomfortable and unable to answer. She said she might like to be married and have kids but who knows, because those aren’t plans you can achieve on your own, they depend on someone else. Sad.

    2. From my experience, I'd say Jana believes whatever her parents have taught her to believe. I don't think she's unhappy but since she knows no other life, I doubt she has any aspirations to do or be anything different than she is now.

    3. That would be an interesting interview if she ever chose to do one.

  23. Can the Duggars do a "Grandchildren only" photo for, say, something like the Summer, or Christmas season? That would be really cute, and then to do one every year thereafter to mark growth and new little ones! If you read this Ellie, please suggest this, I think us fans would love to see a new tradition, their Grandchildren, like their own children, are gorgeous!
