Spurgeon or Quincy?

A number of readers have asked what the Duggars and Seewalds call Jessa and Ben Seewald's almost-four-week-old son, whose given name is Spurgeon Elliot Seewald.

Proud Mama Jessa shared with us that Baby Seewald most often goes by Spurgeon, although some people still call him Quincy, a nickname that the expectant parents came up with before finding out the gender of their child.

  2. I think Quincy is a great nickname for when he is young, and then when he is grown-up, Spurgeon is a great name. Just my opinion. Whatever you call him, he is still adorable!

  6. He is such a cutie-pie! How can you call him Spurgeon? Why not Elliott? Quincy is okay, too. But, Spurgeon? Couldn't you have honored Charles Spurgeon by naming him Charles? I'm sorry, but I think he will hate it as he gets older. Just my opinion.

  7. I like either! He is such a cutie! :)

I love both names but maybe they should decide on using just one name or he may be confused.

  13. He is soooo adorable!!! Love that picture. I figured they would call him Quincy or Eliot at least while he is a baby. Spurgeon is a big name for such a little guy.

  14. The only people that call him Quincy still are the ones that hate his name Spurgeon. It's not my favorite name either, but it's her baby. She can name him anything she wants and you should respect that and call him Spurgeon.

  15. I have thought about this baby's unusual name and decided the idea that it is unusual is just based in our culture and our context. The Seewald's live larger than that, so they see a broader picture and know this name is good from their perspective. It may seem like a different choice to some but it does not have to be something to be shy about because it stretches many peoples minds. (Their are famous Quincys too), that is a cute nickname for Spurgeon Elliot.

  16. Tori Bates is courting someone. In the uptv video of her and her sisters, she said she was thankful for her in-laws. I think her and joseph are courting

    2. What uptv video was it? I want to watch it . that would be so cool.

    3. She may be courting, but I believe when she said she was thankful for her in-laws she was referring to her sister-in-law Whitney and her brothers-in-law Chad, John, and Brandon.

    4. Her siblings spouses are her in laws...

    5. Yeah I heard something like that on another website. They also said something about other Duggars who are eligible to court.

  17. Why not call him Elliot ? It's his name & it's a beautiful one. My mother was called by her middle name. Nothing says you can't use the middle name.

    1. If you're going to use a middle name, why not just make it the first name? Makes no sense.

    1. It does seem to be an American thing to call a child by his first and middle name when he is in trouble. That will be a mouthful and probably his misdemeanor will have been forgotten by the time his name is said.

  20. I really don't understand why anyone would call him Quincy. That's not his first name. It's not his middle name. It's also not his last name. If they wanted him to be called Quincy, wouldn't they have used Quincy as either the first or last name? I don't understand the confusion.

    1. They call him what they want. They are partial to Quincy because that's what they called him for like nine months. In my family we usually call each other by cute nicknames we made up for each other. Its cute he's cute they obviously liked spurgeon Elliot and Quincy or they wouldn't have ever called him Quincy in the first place. Quincy is a cute nickname kids have nicknames.

  32. I venture to say that within a year we will see a number of new baby boys sporting the name Spurgeon. It is a fine name and a very strong name with strong character. Watch for it. You will see its popularity advance.

I'm older even than your parents are, but I love your whole family. I've been praying for you all for many years, because the world is so thirsty for people who love God and each other, as you and Ben love each other and your extraordinarily lovely little baby. Have you noticed that about him? ;-) Blessings on you all.

  44. Why is everything posted about Jessa? Come on...there are other BEAUTIFUL Children in this Family. Enough about Jessa, Ben and baby. People have babies every day. Seewald baby not any more special than any other beautiful child born every day. Spurgeon is only "special" to his parents. Move on, even Israel did not get this much attention. Baby Meredith really got overshadowed. Enough about Jessa's baby.

Inform your viewers on the other Family Members, PLEASE?

    1. Yeah! We love Jessa and Ben and Spurgeon but what about the rest of the family? Jimbob Michelle? the kids homeschooling? Joseph at college jingers photography? The little kids going up Josie's bday soon!!!??? Joy Anna is an amazing singer I would like to hear more about her. And about her weightlifting! There's a lot happening for Ben and Jess. But there's always jimbob, michelle , Jana, John David, Jill, Israel and Derrick, Anna, Mackenyze, Michael,Marcus, Meredith, Jinger, Joseph, Josiah, Joy Anna, Jedediah, Jeremiah, Jason, James, Justin, Jackson, Johannah, Jennifer, Jordyn-grace, and Josie!!! We don't tune in for just Jessa and Ben the point of following this family is hearing about everyone in the family.

  54. For the person that mentioned Tori Bates courting. I heard he say her in-laws also and am pretty sure she was meaning her brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, as in her siblings spouses. I don't even if she were courting that she would refer to her boyfriend's family as her in-laws.

  55. I really miss your show. I know what the oldest son did is bad but the entire family should not have to be punished for what he did. I hope you come back on soon! The new shows on TLC stink. Your family was so encouraging to watch. I feel that part of the reason all that happened with Josh was because he moved away from his family. He did not have the love and support he needed and sin made its way into his heart. God Bless your family!!!

  58. I hope Carolyn Nelson is wrong about the name Spurgeon! Charles Haddon Spurgeon probably was called Charles or Reverend when he was alive. I mean no disrespect, but Spurgeon is not a nice last name to saddle a kid with as a first name. Haddon would have been better. My parents probably started the trend of surnames as 1st names with my brother Burke and then I have heard of Jacksons, Landons, and Greysons. Hey, the baby's uncle Jackson has a last name as a first so I guess he is in glad company!
