The Duggars are so right when they say how freeing it is to be out of debt. After years of using credit cards and loans we are now debt free except for a mortgage. We have no cards and only use cash for purchases. We also use thrift stores for a lot of things from clothing to household goods and we buy secondhand cars.
We only heat rooms that we are using, switch off lights when we leave the room and hang washing out on the line rather than using the drier.
By setting a budget and sticking to cash only, buying things that others might not want any more rather than new and, more importantly, learning to be content and finding other things to do instead of shopping there certainly is a freedom to be found.
