Derick on ‘The Dave Ramsey Show’

Four weeks after the release of Jill Duggar Dillard’s new book, Derick made an on-air call to Dave Ramsey to seek financial advice. Derick, who says he is a long-time listener of The Ramsey Show, asks Dave Ramsey what he and Jill should do with the income from the book. Derick says they are currently debt-free. If you would like to hear the segment featuring his call, which lasts about six minutes, you can listen to the episode released on October 9th, called “One Year of Sacrifice Changes Everything.” Derick calls in at the 1:25:20 mark.

  1. Nothing like seeking publicity. Derick like attention.

    1. You are absolutely correct. If anyone had any doubt about Derrick being greedy and arrogant, listen to the Ramsey show, unbelievable. No more doubt about this being all about money and revenge.

    2. Ugh.. I agree. Ramsey shouldn't have given him the recognition, just give the advice and hang up like he does with everyone else that calls

  2. I find it difficult to believe that someone who was an accountant for Wal-Mart wouldn't know where to invest that little bit of money. I think he called in because Rachael had reached out to Jill, so Derick was calling to promote the book and probably facilitate some sort of collaboration between Jill and Rachael. I would hope Derick is not really that clueless about investing. Also, Dave, be quiet about your own book(s). This whole thing didn't sound like any usual call to that show (I listen to it a lot). It sounded like a set-up.

    4. At the end of the tax year when you take your investment earnings and disbursement statements to someone to file your income tax, who do you take them to? An accountant! Of course accountants are familiar with investments and which types produce which returns. Derick has a college degree in Business Administration, Accounting, and Economics. Of course he knows and doesn't need a radio talk show host to tell him!

    5. Being an account is not the same as a financial planner or investment advisor.

      Delete
    6. Did any of you listen to the broadcast? Derick mentions his retirement account and his Roth IRA, then talks about possibly opening a brokerage account or an S&P 500 index fund and a 529 fund. Those are not words from someone who is clueless about financial planning and investing.

    7. My accountant has given me excellent investment advice, especially from a tax standpoint, something my financial planner could not do. In fact, the financial planner referred me to the accountant when there were investment questions she (the financial planner) could not advise me about.

    8. Re 5:33 comment - those are the exact degrees that investment advisors get before going into business as advisors - BBA and Economics. Derick would have studied the right courses to know about investing. He may never have taken the state exams necessary to be licensed as an investment advisor, but he was on the right track to become one with that degree, had he gone in that direction after graduation. He certainly would have known his options for where to put $50,000 without having to call a radio talk show host!

    9. The first investing advice I ever got was from the accountant doing my taxes. Derick didn't ask anyone to lay out a financial roadmap to retirement for him. He only wanted to know where to park a $50K windfall. Anyone could have told him that, even a banker. Even his mom!

    10. Yeah, sure does sound like a set up. Derrick is out of control and Jill can’t reel him in. She has mentioned several times publicly about her almost nonexistent relationship with her family. Jill has spent so much negative energy thinking of nothing but her revenge book that she has become desensitized to her family…and doesn’t care what anyone thinks about what her and Derrick do or say. A little hypocritical, ,Iwould say.

  3. I'm sure JimBob enjoyed this Ramsey segment with Derick immensely and is thrilled to hear that the Dillards are debt free, have a comfortable income from Derick's job as an attorney, are saving for retirement, and that Jill's book is a NYT bestseller. He must be so proud of them both! No doubt JimBob is also thrilled that his daughter and SIL are planning ahead and saving for their kids' COLLEGE educations!

    1. Considering the carnage Derrick left behind..I’m sure Jim Bob and Michelle are still praying for their salvation, but I can’t see them really wanting them back in their lives. Even though Jill is their daughter I would think there would be a limit to their patience, even for the Duggars. I would think the Duggars would be ready to give up on Jill, like she has given up on them. The aftermath from the book has been more telling then the book..and it looks like it would be best that they are separated for life. I’m surprised Michelle would still be so persevering to even want to meet with Jill occasionally..I wouldn’t.

    5. @7:20 Not many people have found jobs after attending college? And liberalism has something to do with that? I find that not only difficult to believe but IMPOSSIBLE to believe. I had a medical problem last week. I went to someone with a job and a degree for that. I did not enlist a plumber.

      Delete
    6. 7:20 There are still many high-paying professions that require a college degree. You simply have to play your cards right and plan ahead. My son is an electrical engineer making 6 figures and he's only 27 years old. Sure, if you're a philosophy or art history major, your job prospects aren't the best. Many of the trades require physically demanding work, so a person needs to keep that in mind, too.

      Delete
    7. While I agree that the relative value of a college degree has declined as more people have received them and as trade labor becomes more scarce, to say that “not many people have found jobs after attending” college is ridiculous. It completely undermines your point to make such an outlandish claim.

    8. 7:20. You do make a good point. We have two kids..one with Master degree, teaches elementary school, other went into service for five years, returned and did some college and is successfully employed repairing robots..both make about the same money, both happy. Parents should encourage their children to enlist in the service if they aren’t sure what they want to do after graduating from high school. My husband and I are both successfully retired in one of the most expensive states. We both agree that the fact we have fewer bills, has allowed us to travel, yet still be generous in our giving and be very happy 70 something!

  4. I believe that Mr. Ramsey and his program already knew that Derick would call in. No way was this a surprise. All pre-set up. Derick also knew since he is a long time listener, that he would be asked more about his and Jill's personal finances; so he was quite willing for this info to be public. I believe this was a great big dig at Jim Bob to let him know that his way isn't the best way....by keeping your adult , married children tied to YOU for their financial independence. He may have wanted to send a message to Jill's siblings that they, too, can be educated OR technically trained to support themselves away from their father's control. This control over the Duggar parents' children is not a Godly way to live, it's simply a means of control and power. Quite the opposite of humility and Godliness. They are not good parents from the get go. This is my opinion and I thank you for posting it.

Your credit card statement says ZERO in interest added to your total and ZERO dollars balance.

  10. Derick's degree was in accounting; not financial investment. An accountant isn't an investment expert. Yes, he certainly could have NOT called in and consulted with a financial advisor privately as most people do. An alterior motive was there, certainly but I can't blame him for wanting to stick it to Jim Bob.

    ReplyDelete

    1. No, Derick's degree was not only in accounting, unless the resume he wrote himself is wrong. His resume clearly says he graduated from OSU with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration AND Economics. Economists (or anyone who studied those subjects) are most certainly familiar with the technical aspects of investing. In fact, they're the first to see downturns in the market or upswings coming, plus federal interest rate changes. They know where to put their money!

      Delete
    2. No, no, no. I'm an Econ grad from a top program, and I was not trained in the "technical aspects of investing." Not at all. That's like saying when you go to law school, you're suddenly an expert on all areas of law. No, Derrick is smart to seek advice for issues outside of his area of expertise.

      Delete
    3. Jill & Derick talked years ago about having "savings" to use when he was in law school. Do you really think he knew no better than to stash it in the mattress or something? Of course he already knew about all those funds he spoke to Dave Ramsey about. If you can say 529 and S&P 500 off the top of your head, you know about investing. Dave didn't tell Derick anything he didn't already know. In fact, there was more talk about publishing books and being famous in that call than there was about actual investing.

    1. We chose not to be debt free for decades because we had such low-interest car loans (0%, 1%) and house mortgage (3%) that we cash-flowed them while our investments, which we left untouched and added to constantly, were raking in 10% to 14%. We never paid off the house until the investments were bringing in way more than the payoff amount per month. Sometimes it's better to use someone else's money (the car company's, the bank's) while yours sits and grows. We never had credit card debt because that's the worst mess you can get yourself into. If something had happened to us, the kids wouldn't have had a problem. The value of the house and cars exceeded what was owed, so they would have been sold for payoff and profit. Dave Ramsey wouldn't agree with what we did but one look at our net worth would have silenced him.

      Delete
    2. Anon 10:18. Well put. Being "debt free" has become a buzz word in some Christian circles. It's not very realistic or even makes economic sense as most of us didn't start out in our working life with a huge pile of cash with which to buy a house. Makes far more sense to buy a house with a mortgage than to spend years renting as the price of houses continue to rise and you never can save enough to purchase one for cash.

      Delete
    3. Dave Ramsey hates having car loans or mortgages. But if you got in on those when the rates were low, and if you left your investments alone while the stock market shot up about 15 years ago, you're in fine shape now. Even market downturns are good for the long haul investors, because the same amount of money you set aside each month buys more stock shares, which then multiply when the market goes up again (and it always does). It's a little harder to play that way with mortgage rates being around 8% right now, but I've seen worse. Our first house was 14%. You just wait and refi refi refi when the numbers go down. Common sense.

      Delete
    4. 11:27 Dave Ramsey doesn't advocate never taking out a mortgage to buy a home. He does tell people to put down as much as possible and pay it off as quickly as possible. A lot of people don't understand how much you actually pay for a house when you figure in the interest you pay over the life of the loan. With a 30 year mortgage, you typically don't start paying anything on the principal until the 15 year mark. Prior to that, it's mostly interest.

Then there were so many talebearer comments about personal finances of the Duggars, silly statements ..like her dad screaming at her..give me a break ..who hasn’t been yelled at by their dad..young or old. All the fame they are searching for by going on TV and now Derrick on the Ramsey show tells a lot about their character. I went to the Bible Encyclopedia and looked up the word slander..”an accusation maliciously uttered with the purpose or effect of damaging the reputation of another.” “May be a truth circulated insidiously and with a hostile purpose.” Proverbs 11:13 “he goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy conceals a matter.” Derrick and Jill have certainly proven themselves untrustworthy.

This was in what was supposed to be a counseling session. It has all the signs of an abusive situation, a power and control issue, and the potential for violence. If you've ever been in such a situation, you would not downplay it like that. I don't think you've read Jill's book either.

    3. 2:09 you hit the nail on the head..thank you for giving a biblical insight and you are totally correct about the tale bearing. However I think this change in Jill’s heart had happened long before the book. When the Smiley movie or whatever it’s called came out I could barely watch it ..I fast forward through most of it. I was thinking at the time how disgusting it was that Jill had any part in that movie..considering her family was mocked and faces distorted with happy faces. This movie was filled with stories with no possibility of rebuttal, so it was impossible what was true and what was a story…just like Jill’s tell all book, it’s hard to say what is true and what is story telling..since there is no rebuttal.

Myself and my siblings all lived in a home where we were screamed at, we all became successful Christians, and none of us considered it abuse.

    10. 7:41..the truth of the matter is..lots of children are screamed at so they will self correct their behavior. Other households spank or hit their children to have them change behavior. As far as adults screaming at each other..that usually comes when one person is frustrated with another for not understanding the view being expressed..that’s how I see the screaming thing.

    12. @8:47 Why would Jill exaggerate in a book that was going to be put past an editor and then read by millions, including people who know her family? Where are these people now who know the inside story and why aren't they refuting everything Jill has said, if it's all exaggeration? The only people speaking out against her are the ones defending her parents as being "good" parents. But they are offering no actual proof that anything Jill said in the book was false. I think Jill's brothers and sisters are under gag orders tied to their inheritances, and all the friends (like former close family friend Bobye) know that what Jill said is true. This blog's owners know Jill. Yet they have promoted the book and all the interviews. Would they do that if the book was nothing more than sensationalism for a buck?

    2. I think it was a conspiracy because of what Dave said about his daughter being in touch with Jill. This sounded like a setup. Rachael probably told Jill to tell Derick to call in so they could talk about each other's books/shows.

  19. Yes, Jim Bob allowed some of his children to live in houses owned by him after marriage. Some say this was payment to his children for their work on the show...BUT...and a very big BUT here, this is NOT payment for their work. JB already owned these houses for his own investments. His children in living in these homes were made even more indebted to him...they were in these houses on the good graces of Jim Bob.. What the married adults needed was the cash from their work to give them their independence from him. This is what Jim Bob did not want. It's obvious if you look at the situation objectively.

    1. Are you seriously saying JB is a jerk because he gave them free housing instead of cash? I mean come on.

    2. They wouldn't have needed his "free housing" if he had given them the cash they had earned.

    3. Free housing, when it comes with emotional and financial control strings attached, is anything but "free."

    2. I dont think it's the iblp deal.. it's the fact that people feel that the family is being attacked by Jill and Derrick over being paid for being in the show..she wrote a book, been on Interviews, enough is enough

    3. Wow that’s an interesting observation. I had observed the total opposite..seeing that this is a Duggar blog of supporters I noticed a lot of hostile remarks about the Duggar Family on this blog. I have nothing to do with the IBLP group. As a Christian I feel that Jill and Derrick have been greedy, first in demanding $175,000.00 and second is writing a tell all book for money and revenge.

    4. I'm not sure the people defending JB and Michelle are all involved with IBLP, but they do have the mindset that doesn't allow them to accept information that doesn't match what they already believe. Very rigid and not adaptable to changes in life.

    5. I don't think the defenses have much to do with IBLP but that some people are having difficulty adjusting their image of Jim Bob and Michelle from wonderful Christian parents successfully raising their mega family to selfish people who exploited their children for personal gain. Some, including myself always felt their children were being used but it was not until Jill presented facts and figures that we knew to what extent.

    6. @9:35 I think that making your grown child sign a contract without explaining it to her, and making her drop everything in El Salvador to fly home to film YOUR show is greedy.

    7. 4:10.. I guess the Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree..guess you are saying they are both greedy?

    8. 4:10- taking their young child to a dangerous country was selfish on their part!

    9. @9:11 How is getting what you earned for the work you did "greedy"?

    10. @9:11 How is expecting to get a paycheck for the work you did "greedy"? Imagine if you worked for a company and your employer announced one day that they weren't ever going to pay you because all the money the company makes goes back into the company as a "blessing" and allows the CEO to buy more planes and properties? Oh, and your employer refused to let you quit because you had signed a contract without being explained those details. Would you be "greedy" if you expected some pay to come your way for the work you did? NO..... Would your employer be considered greedy for not paying employees and keeping all the money? YES..... There are no apples and trees here. There's just greed and control.

    11. Read the book and then tell us it's greedy. In fact, Jill explains how JimBob reported to the IRS that he had paid her a salary that he never actually paid. She only found out when the IRS demanded their cut. I guess Jim Bob wanted to take that tax deduction? Would you call that tax fraud?

  21. Now we all know how much money they make. Why would he call in?

  22. Keep the money, set up 3 college trust funds for your 3 boys and start a nonprofit that helps people who are involved in cults escape and get a fresh start in the world(and legal help from Derick). Also, use some of it and take a family vacation to a theme park like Disney World. That's what I do with the book proceeds.

  23. Jim Bob has done a great job with his investments, with houses..maybe Derrick should ask him! I guess it depends on where you live..but our greatest investment came from taking a second out on our house to buy another property. ..because of the homes prices doubling it has resulted in two homes worth over Two million dollars. We have paid off the second on our home. It isn’t always the best investment to pay off your home when you could use that money for a down payment on another home.

    1. You have to have a unique property opportunity and market condition to make that plan work. I wouldn't take out a second unless I was sure prices weren't going to tank and I was always going to have a job/income. Otherwise, you can lose 2 houses in one fell swoop.

      Delete
    2. Yes 2:59 you do have to know what you are doing to be successful. It’s definitely not for everyone, it takes a lot of confidence. It would be very unlikely you would lose both houses, almost impossible in a well sought out community. The renters are paying your mortgage on one house. In thirty years our home has gone from $290,000.00 to 1.3 million. In twenty years our condo has gone from $210,000.00 to $550,000.00. Obviously some areas of the United States do not have these profit margins..although I think each state has shown great profit margins in Real Estate. We were married 30 years before we had the confidence to get another property..so glad we did…now each kid will inherit a home.

      Delete
    3. 5:39 You take a huge gamble with that strategy. Case in point- the 2008 housing crash.

      Delete
    4. If you have 2 mortgages and lose your job due to a strong recession or depression, you could default on both loans and/or be underwater with both houses and really lose your shirt. I wouldn't do it.

      Delete
    5. 4:01 and 10:34…this kind of investment isn’t for everyone..it worked for us and many others. The second property was rented during the 2008 recession and since we weren’t selling, the price didn’t affect us. We have had the same renter for 20 years..so they have paid off the condo, we paid off the second..so the properties are paid off. It’s much easier to consider a second when the first is paid off and the equity in the home is close to a million. It’s a shame not to take advantage of your equity and double your homes..great for kids to inherit. We are in a super desirable area and the rents continue to skyrocket. We treat our renter well..last year we put hardwood floors throughout the condo..let the renter pick out the flooring . Had the whole condo painted, got brand new washer and dryer and had the patio area redone…besides putting in new fans and lighting. At the time we bought the condo, 20 years ago my husband was working, so the write off on the condo really helped for our taxes. Now we are retired and thankful to have such a great renter for 20 years!

  24. One of Jill’s goals, which hasn’t been mentioned yet is her desire to cause chaos within the family structure, with parents and children. This is a quote she gave to People Magazine a while back. “I feel called to do this. We really wanted to tell our story for my siblings, because some of them are going to face similar challenges, if they haven’t already, to what I faced.” That’s disgusting..I’m glad none of her siblings fell for her insincere story . I’m sure the siblings are rallying around each other and will continue a loving relationship with their parents, even Jill has given up on one. It’s all about money and revenge.

    1. Why would you say her siblings are going to "fall" for Jill's "insincere" story? THEY LIVED IT. THEY WITNESSED IT. They know Jill's not lying. And they've probably been intimidated by their father into not saying anything.

      Delete
    2. Jill is a married woman with a family of her own therefore she is NOT required to submit to Jim Bob's authority. The "chaos" in the family is caused by that simple truth. Jim Bob won't accept that reality. The rest of her siblings are unwilling to asser themselves and therefore let Jim Bob run their lives. I think that Jill overcame a major challenge when she took control of her own life after she married.

      Delete
    3. Perhaps I'm missing something, but if we're ALWAYS under the authority of our parents, when do married couples get to start making their OWN decisions? After their parents die?

      Delete
    4. 8:20 How did you turn "I feel called to do this" into "desire to cause chaos"? That's quite a stretch, unless you're aiming to put Jill down and digging for any usable tidbit for that. Also, what proof do you have that her story is "insincere"? There is none.

      Delete
    5. @10:37 So true. Taking control was never going to be easy. Was always going to be messy, given who she had to overcome.

      Delete
    6. @8:20 I suggest you research "righteous anger." You will find Biblical examples, such as when Jesus got angry and overturned the money changers' tables. Righteous anger is used to right a wrong. Jill's anger is righteous. She lived something wrong and is doing something right about it (healing herself and warning others not to fall into the same traps). The family's anger is not righteous, it's denial and not taking responsibility for what they did wrong (like the money changers).

      Delete
    7. 8:20 You are certainly correct that Jill may have wanted to create chaos, however because of the stellar no response of parents and siblings this was not successful. Because they did not respond in anger , showed no defense or have a rebuttal the goal of further division in the family that Jill may have wanted, was squelched.

      Delete
    8. @10:47- how do you know it's "righteous?" None of the others are doing that. There are ways to deal with the anger without spreading it all over the public...

      Delete
    9. @8:33 Use Jesus as your example

    10. So would you say anyone who speaks up after leaving a cult is after revenge? Or could it be that maybe they want to help others? In her book, Jill mentioned that one of her brothers came to her for advice after not wanting to follow their parents' strict rules. She has an important role to play for her siblings.
