    1. Neddy you have learnt me something new. I didn’t know today was Eleanor Roosevelt’s birthday, the main thing I know about her is she is the longest serving First Lady in American history. I’m British but love American history & always enjoy finding out new facts, so thank you for that, & happy Columbus Day to you & your family too.

    1. It was Indigenous Peoples' Day, if you ask many. It's been renamed by 20 states and Washington DC as well as at least 130 cities since the name was first proposed over 40 years ago. The focus is being taken off Columbus and the oppressive practices he brought and left here. The focus is turning towards Native Americans and what they have contributed to our country.

      Delete
    2. 9:42, no need to correct her words. As a nation, it is still called Columbus Day, so she is accurate to call it that as well.

      Delete
    3. @11:39 President Biden signed a declaration on October 8 declaring October 11 Indigenous Peoples' Day. So as a nation, it's also called that day. The way things are going, Columbus Day may fade into history one of these years and the observance may completely change to be one honoring Native Americans.

      Delete
    4. In Canada it was Thanksgiving Day. In addition to the new Truth and Reconciliation Day that they celebrate now on September 30th (analog to the Indigenous People Day I guess).

    5. I, for one, am grateful to Columbus. My family came to the US as refugees from a country where people were killed for being Christians. So Happy Columbus Day, everyone!

    6. 1:36 AM - I am glad you and your family is safe. But you also have to understand American history. While you came here for safety, this land was taken away from my ancestors that was killed and some put on reservations which I still have family that lives on those terrible lands. I struggle to pay bills every single month. The government promised us good insurances, education and free college but that never happened. They only pick a select few natives. You should sit in on a live conference to tribal meetings and find out where our promises are going to, they are given them to the refugees from foreign places that both Obama had deals with and now Biden. They also give them to the refugees from Mexico. It's the same paper they was suppose to sign for us to get the benefits we was owed. They forgot about the rest of us. This is why I don't trust any politician.

    7. 1:36, I’m not sure that what Columbus did was so Christian. Also, don’t you think the people who are indigenous to this country should have a special day in their honor? Especially with how they were mistreated by the conquerors.

    8. Personally, while Christopher Columbus was neither perfect nor a saint (in the larger sense of the word), the Native Americans were neither perfect nor saintly either with aspects od their culture and religious practices. Nor can Christopher Columbus be rightfully demonized nor should he be held accountable for what other human beings would go on to do. The only race we have is the human race and historically there's enough atrocities for every tribe, tongue, and nation to get full credit for depravity, violence, murder, greed, theft, and harming their fellow man. No one group of people has clean hands here and can take the "moral" high ground. We have 4000+ years of recorded history as evidence. Instead of spending our time and energy on mob violence and cancelling every person or thing that offends us, we should be looking be making sure history doesn't repeat itself. Nothing's going to change base human nature (which is well-documented throughout history), except a personal relationship with Jesus. Scoff if you like, and we'll agree to disagree.

    9. @1:36 Actually, Leif Eriksson led the first European expedition to North America nearly 500 years before the birth of Columbus. We know that Columbus was known for ordering the enslavement and murder of countless native people on the island of what is now known as the Dominican Republic and Haiti. (Hispaniola) That is why he is such a controversial figure today. Also, he never set foot on what is now the US.

    10. I, for one, am glad this is changing. How do you “discover” a country when there are already people living there who are descendants of the original inhabitants? It would be like me coming into your backyard, where you are barbecuing, and declaring, “I have discovered 608 Oak Street.” Yes, you found it. But you were not the first. Far from it. So I celebrate Indigenous People’s Day, and the lessons about respecting the land that we can learn from them. But I understand what 1:36 is saying, as well. Those of us not Native American, need to find a way to remember all the immigrants (our ancestors)who came to the US from other lands. Not calling it Colombia Day, but finding a name commiserate with Immigrants’ Day, a celebration of the many and varied heritages that America is comprised of.

      Delete
    11. @5:35 Truth and Reconciliation Day (Sept 30) is different from Indigenous Day (June 21) in Canada. Sept 30th is a day of reflection, of truth, for both the Indigenous and non-indigenous. It is not a day of celebration but sadness. It is a day when are reminding of the work that has to be done for true reconciliation. It is a day when we honor and remember the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities.

      Delete
    12. Anon 10:24 I don't think anyone is saying that Native Americans shouldn't have a special day but to try and cancel Columbus day in order to do that makes zero sense. There are 365 days in a year so pick another day or a week to celebrate Native American culture etc.

      Delete
    13. @12:17 If I understand you correctly, you think that statues, monuments, memorials and holidays should remain as they are in honor of historical figures, regardless of the atrocities committed by them. IMO, Columbus Day honors a man who enslaved and slaughtered native peoples. Removing such a tribute isn't cancelling the person, but rather acknowledging that it was not a good idea for FDR to proclaim it a holiday in the first place. In 1937, he was under intense lobbying from the Knights of Columbus to do so.

      Delete
    14. 12:54 PM - But ain't it funny how long those statues been there and no one person did anything about it. How many times you walk by one without even glancing up at it? I am so glad I'm come from strong backbone people that didn't let history keep them down despite coming from a long line of slaves.

      Delete
    15. @8:03 Then your family should be able to understand how these subjects and these problems can bother other people.

      Delete
    16. 8:03 I'm not sure why it's a problem to remove statues or do away with holidays that pay tribute to historical figures who did horrible things. Just because you don't care doesn't mean there aren't a lot of people who do.

      Delete
    17. You do understand that natives scalped people.. right???

      Delete
    18. 8:03 That's great that you don't let history keep you down. However, if there's a way to right some wrongs, I think it's worth pursuing. Whether it's removing a statue, holiday or other memorial that pays tribute to an undeserving individual, it matters to a lot of people.

      Delete
    19. 8:59 Natives did it to people trying to take their territory, no matter who they were. Settlers did it right back to them, but they were the ones who got paid per scalp by our government as proof that they were successfully "taming" the land.

      Delete
    20. 8:59 How many federal holidays do we have that honor any Native American?

      Delete
    21. Good grief we can all get on this merry-go-round of "you persecuted me so I get to erase every memory of you!!! Let's see, I am half Jewish so everything that has to do with German's or any contributions they have made has got to be cancelled and you owe me, I am part English and protestant and my ancestors were persecuted (documented in my ancestry) by the Catholic Church and some of us fled for our lives so hmmm, the Catholic now owe me and all Catholics have now got to be cancelled, Some of my Jewish family escaped out of Germany and fled to Holland and some were handed over to the Germans by some Dutch German sympathisers and so Dutch folks have now got to be cancelled, and we can go on and on. I have an idea, how about everyone get out of their victimized mindset and realize like my family and ancestors learned and that is you are now FREE and it is now your responsibility to live and make personal choices to better yourself and stop expecting others to pay for circumstances that have happened centuries ago when they had nothing to do with what happened back then. You can waste your life in a pity party or you can get up and pursue happiness which is up to you to achieve.

      Delete
    22. @12:54- No, you did not understand me correctly at all. I never said, nor did I even remotely imply that statues, monuments, memorials and holidays should remain as they are in honor of historical figures, regardless of the atrocities committed by them. Far from it, to be exact. What I am against is demonizing some of the historical figures who played a part in those atrocities, while giving other cultures a clear hard pass who have committed the exact same atrocities or equally horrific atrocities. For example, the state of California has celebrated Cinco de Mayo since 1863 (a celebration of Mexican culture-the same culture that primarily descended the Aztecs), but no one is protesting or outraged by that. Native American tribes were enslaving and killing each other long before Columbus ever arrived; African Chieftains were killing, enslaving, and trading their rival tribe captives before the first European arrived on the African continent (with quite a few becoming seriously wealthy). These are all inconvenient, uncomfortable historical truths. As a Christian, that's my focus-TRUTH, all of it, not just the parts that I like best or fit someone's narrative (political or religious). I might well add that the Catholic Church, given it's well-documented history of horrific murders, Popes having illegitimate children, Popes cutting all kinds of deals with godless rulers (power grabs, increasing the land holdings and filling the coffers of the Catholic "Church"), torturing and burning their opponents, etc., neither knew, worshiped, nor served the Jesus Christ of the Bible. I simply stated, and will do so again for the record, no one people's are clean when it comes to abuses. I am of the opinion that the statues should stand, along with a pretty large plaque discussing the atrocities committed and why they were culturally acceptable at the time and why those beliefs are wrong. I think that's a much more effective lesson for humanity.

      Delete
    23. Respect that land because it was taken away from the natives who was just trying to protect it.

      Delete
    24. You guys are going around the point, why now be mad at a statue that's been there for years? First you want to start with being mad at American soil because it doesn't belong to them. How is that no offensive? Native Americans was the first slaves before the African slaves was brought here. Let's start with the soil before the statues.

      Delete
    25. Historians are now saying Nordics came to America about 500 years before Columbus, so there you go...

  20. My goodness I can’t believe little Johannah is 16, where have the years gone. Soon all the Duggar children will be adults, I wonder how Michelle will cope with that. I only have 2 children but when the youngest turned 18 I felt sad that I no longer had little kids. If I felt like that after 2 poor Michelle will be devastated when number 19 becomes an adult. Hope johannah has a wonderful year being 16, she is a very pretty young lady.

    1. I don't feel that children growing up to adults should be "devastating" to anyone. Do you think Michelle only values her children when they're little and is disappointed when they grow older?

      Delete
    2. I think for Michelle the big thing was that she is not having anymore children on her own. But then grandkids started coming, so she is still surrounded by growing kids = grandkids, and they are coming every year. They can go visit, they can do events. She can have all of them at her house, or she can have a family of just 1 kid with all their kids... They all seem to be living in the same area, except Jinger and Justin.

      Delete
    3. 4:04, Michelle has spent decades being a mom with children in her home, something she apparently loves doing. You can love your adult children just as much, but the relationship is different, the intense "job" is gone - kind of like retiring from a job you love. It will be a huge adjustment for her.

      Delete
    4. 4:04, I don't think you understood what Fuzzyferet was saying. She said if 2 growing up and leaving the nest was sad for her, then by comparison going through that 19 times (19!!) would be - by comparison - devastating. She did NOT say that having adult children is devastating. Obviously you love them and keep a relationship with them. I know what Fuzzyferet was saying - I only have one in college and four still at home, and even that was an emotionally difficult transition for me. I miss the little kids I used to have too. It is just different having an adult child. It's ok if you don't understand how we feel because you haven't experienced what we have experienced, but you were reading things into Fuzzyferet's comment that she just wasn't saying.

      Delete
    5. It's a new season of life for Michelle. She tells herself that whenever there are changes. That's how she copes. She won't be devastated.

      Delete
    6. Wow. I was happy when my children grew up and left the nest. I was exhausted by the time the last one left and ready to move on to another phase of my life when I had more time for myself. Don't get me wrong I dearly love my children and hope for grandchildren in the future but I want them to make a life for themselves and not be dependent on me.

      Delete
    7. I think now it's even more valuable, to have adult children whom she can have friendship and adult conversation, like do something of equal level with them.

      Delete
    8. I saw mothers become devastated when their youngest turned 18, some experienced a sense of loss, some got black out drunk, some celebrate, some kicked their kids out. Doesn’t matter what belief, age, number of kids.

      Delete
    9. My sentiments exactly 9:39 am. You read my mind.

      Delete
    10. They have a tight knit family, if some children get married, they are still family. In addition Michelle and Jim Bob have great relationship between them, and it's the main relationship in her life. Many mothers like to live their children's lives just because they have nothing going on in their own. That's when a child growing up is like a shock to them, because suddenly they have no life. Not case of Duggars at all.

      Delete
    11. I think Michelle will feel sad, but then relieved. That’s how I felt when my kids grew up. It was sad, but then it was nice not having all the responsibilities, and finally having some “me” time. But I can’t imagine with 19 kids. I only had 3 kids!

      Delete
    12. Anon 9:39, yes I am too relieved my kids are adults. But now is the grandkids, which I dearly love, but when your child, my son, gets into a relationship with a woman who doesn’t want to take responsibility of her kids, then guess what, here comes grandma to watch them all day. I raised my son right, but he unfortunately got into a relationship with a mental case, and it’s sad. Its all the brainwashing this society has put on men and women. Unfortunately, the mother has an extreme feminist point of view, which, hey, I understand to a certain point, but not to the point where you are going to abandon your responsibility as a parent because you don’t want to be a 50’s housewife, which she is not by any means, but she uses that reference. Now my son is the one who takes care of the children, and she just wants to hang out with her friends everyday. It’s sad really. The poor kids are going to suffer while she is being completely selfish. Sorry just venting, but I devoted all my life to raising my kids, putting them first above everything, and now I see my son with this selfish woman who doesn’t want to give her kids the attention they need, and now me as a grandma, it’s sad.

      Delete
    13. I found having my kids grow up and leave home to be a bittersweet thing. I was happy for them, but also a bit sad to see them go and close that chapter. It's been a few years now and we've adjusted just fine. We're fortunate that they don't live more than an hour's drive away from us.

    16. Anon 9:27 I feel for your daughter in law. You obviously think the world of your son and don't think very much of her. Maybe your first step could be to support this woman your son married instead of trashing her on this blog

    17. I'd love to hear 9:27's DIL's side of the story. What's wrong with the father taking care of HIS kids? If he's filling the father role even if he's not the biological father, why complain? It's between the two of them (father/mother) to work out their own childcare responsibilities. Every family does it differently. Seems there's a triangle here, not two parents. And those kids are eventually going to pick up on the frustration of one leg of that triangle...

    18. Anon 9.17. You understood what I was saying exactly. I felt “devastated” that I didn’t have my children little anymore, however no one could be prouder of their adult children than I am. I love them dearly & the partners they have chosen to be with. However I would be lying if I say my life is not drastically different now they don’t live at home. I’m unable to travel due to illness & my son lives over 300 miles away, & as a doctor he can’t get home often as it’s a 6 hour drive one way. I feel very proud what my children have achieved & very proud of myself as I brought them up alone & have no parents or siblings myself, so there was always just the 3 of us. Anon 9.17, I imagine your first going off to college was very hard but like me I’m sure you are very proud & will feel the same with the rest. It seems some people try to find the negative in everything, which I find sad, thank you for realising what I meant, & the context in which it was said.

    3. I hope the "little" girls have more choices of what to do with their lives than their older sisters had, and that the girls actually take those choices. I think Jim Bob and Michelle need to see firsthand that going to a public university (like the one their beloved Razorbacks play for) and getting a degree and a job don't turn you into someone who isn't worthwhile or doesn't go to church. Time for these girls to break out of that protective bubble they've been put in without any say in the matter. Time for them to learn for themselves that the rest of the world CAN be trusted (maybe more so than their own family) and that there ARE great people out there from all walks of life to meet and learn from.
