Hiking with the Caldwells

We have seen Joe and Kendra Duggar join the Caldwells for outdoor activities in the past. The group recently went hiking at Devil's Den State Park in Akransas. Kendra's other siblings and grandmother were also along for the fun but are not pictured here. Have you ever been to Devil's Den?

  4. These girls just need to wear pants for hiking. Nothing immodest about wearing pants.
It looks ridiculous with Kendra wearing a skirt with pants underneath covering her knees.
The wear skin right tips while pregnant so why don't they wear pants?
Don't have to have pants skin tight.

That is a pretty rude comment they need to wear pants for hiking? Really? Who are you to judge? They can wear whatever they want.

    3. "The girls just need to wear pants for hiking." Sorry, but why would you think you can lay down the law about somebody else's dress? People would have a fit if the Duggars went around saying "You just need to wear a skirt." They've never been judgmental like that, and they can wear what they want.

    4. Anon 12.43. I assume you think the girls should wear pants for hiking due to safety issues ? Brambles & rocks & maybe getting their legs scratched ? I know nothing about the area where they went or the terrain involved, I’m just assuming that’s where your comment stems from. I’m an older lady in her early 50s & like Michelle always wear skirts, nothing to do with beliefs, I just find them super comfy. If I was going hiking I too would keep to my skirt, just because I find it comfortable to do so & wouldn't go anywhere with severe rough terrain. I’m pretty sure when there is infants & a pregnant mother on the trip, the Caldwell’s will stick to that premise too. So I’m sure Kendra’s legs will be just fine. I do think she looks incredibly well, & walking is so good for keeping all those pregnancy muscles supple in preparation for birth. Kendra seems to come from a lovely family.

    5. Wearing skirts for athletics is very fashionable. Look at Serena Williams (tennis). Look at a Lululemon store. All kinds of secular examples, even though I know Kendra's family chooses to wear skirts for a religious reason.

    8. 2:41, did you just try to compare tennis to hiking?? They are nowhere close to being the same thing. And it has much more to do with practicality than fashion.

    9. Kendra does not wear tight tops when pregnant. She dresses nice. I agree that some of the other ladies have made some questionable choices on blouses while pregnant. They are human and will make mistakes as well.

      Delete
    10. Sorry 10:56 but that top is getting tight across her belly already.

      Delete
    11. Her knees don’t look like they are buckling at all. She just isn’t standing up straight. I think she is just trying to make sure her brother showed in the picture past Kendra’s stomach. She looks perfectly comfortable.

  8. Wait - Mr. C is carrying the light backpack and Lauren has the heavy baby? Should be the other way around.

    1. Yes this really bothered me as well. She looks completely covered by the baby from his size and it looks like too much weight for her to carry and unbalanced as well. Why oh why do the daughters have to do this all the time!? It sometimes breaks my heart that these young women are so tied to children and child care from an early age on. In all the pics, Kendra is looking after her brother. Eileen

    6. Must be honest kendra’s sister does look to be putting her back at a very awkward angle & her knees are buckling somewhat. I’m sure she won’t have been carrying the baby all the time & maybe just gave someone else a break for a few minutes. She looks to be struggling way too much for her to have been carrying the baby the entire time. No parent would put a young girl under that stress for an entire trip. I’m sure Mr Caldwell or his wife would have also took it in turns with the baby.

      Delete
    7. 12:24, what does that matter? We still don't know how much his pack weighed.

      Delete
    8. There's only a certain amt. you can fit in one of those small packs. Unless he was carrying gold bars and rocks, it couldn't weigh much.

      Delete
    9. Dad should be carrying the baby. That child is half his.

  13. Why is Kendra's sister saddled with the baby? Why isn't it's mother holding it and taking charge. She is that kid's mother; not the teenage daughter. To pass on such large responsibility to the daughters as they do just isn't right. Mrs. Caldwell had that child, not Kendra's sister and SHE should be responsible for it.

    3. Maybe Lauren likes being a big sister to her baby brother. S.S.

      Delete
    4. Relax. She probably offered to carry the baby. I’ve carried many many babies who aren’t mine. That doesn’t mean the mom is shirking responsibility. My 10 year old takes her 3 year old brother to the potty...does that make me a bad mom? SMH

      Delete
    5. Mrs. Caldwell had a bad accident during her first pregnancy if I remember correctly, and still suffers from it from what I understand. I would not expect her to be carrying the baby when he’s already 1 1/2. I would sooner have expected Mr. Caldwell to carry him, but chances are fairly high that they were taking turns at carrying him. Especially if it was a fairly long hike, and then it just so happens that Lauren was carrying him at the time of the pic....

      Delete
    6. GREAT question agree 100%! let the child be a child/kid

      Delete
    7. Likely because Kendra's mother is pregnant again also.

      Delete
    8. How about Mr. Caldwell? Dads can do baby duty....perhaps big sister wanted the job.

      Delete
    9. Lauren probably OFFERED to carry him. Some people actually like children, and offer to hold them for their parents. I was one of those kids as my parents ended up having a surprise baby when I was 12. Many older siblings actually understand what being part of a family is like, and help with their siblings and ENJOY doing so.

      Delete
    10. Perhaps she offered since Kendra is pregnant and they are such close siblings. AND, perhaps she doesn't consider herself saddled.

      Delete
    11. No reason to judge how things happened. We don't know what happened because we weren't there. Maybe her sister offered. Maybe the mom has back trouble. Maybe they took turns. Expand your imagination.

      Delete
    12. Why is it assumed that the MOM is always responsible for the baby?!? Maybe DAD should take a turn and carry the baby, especially on a hike!

      Delete
    13. Maybe Kendra's sister wanted to carry the baby? You weren't there so don't judge a situation that you know nothing about. And Kendra's mother is still there so she is still responsible should something go wrong. You worry about your own life and let them live theirs. There's nothing illegal about this photo so chill out.

    14. At Kendra and Joe's wedding, Kendra's father told Joe that Kendra was ready for marriage and that she knew how to take care of babies and cook. So Lauren is also being prepared for marriage by learning to care for babies.

      Delete
    15. 10:07- Hmmmm. There's more to being ready for marriage than just knowing how to cook or change diapers.

      Delete
    16. I always carried my little cousins. I love babies! Anyway, maybe they are switching off carrying backpacks and kids. So sad when people want to tear down love and family time. In my family it is a 'village' to raise a child and everyone enjoys pitching in.

      Delete
    17. Just because kids or teens WANT to carry a baby doesn't mean they should. I never liked it on 19KAC when the little ones picked up the babies and carried them across that hard tile floor... Lauren in that above picture looks like the baby weight is about to knock her over backwards or make or knees buckle. She's not on even ground, either. Pretty dangerous thing to do.

      Delete
    18. This is so silly. You can't tell how long she was carrying the baby from a picture. Let's try and use some common sense. It was a hike so they probably took turns carrying her. Besides, Kendra's sister looks happy.

    21. 8:01...that doesn’t make any sense. Little kids carrying babies may be a bit dangerous but teens...? I was the same size at 15 that I was when I had my first baby at 25. I didn’t all the sudden become extra sturdy just because I gave birth.
If a teen wants to lug my kid around for a bit I’m handing him over!

They should all be wearing clothes that cover their legs (like light colored pants) and their arms. Also, where are their hats?

    2. @8:57 I've been on some pretty rough cross-country hikes before. We weren't on a trail, and we were climbing mountains. Guess what? Did it in a skirt. You CAN do it. But nobody's forcing you to, so why does another woman in a skirt provoke such strong judgment?

      Delete
    3. Anon 11:46. I've seen women in skirts hiking in rough terrain. As they lifted their skirts (often way past their knees) to negotiate boulders and climb over logs I wondered why they didn't wear something more suited to the activity. lol

      Delete
    4. Women in the 1800's and early 1900's died when their skirts got caught up in machinery or when they got too close to the fireplace. There are times for skirts, and there are times not for skirts.

      Delete
    5. For those women who think that wearing dresses, with bare legs, is OK to hike obviously do not listen to the CDC. It advises that the best way to prevent West Nile virus disease, and a variety of other mosquito-borne diseases, is to avoid mosquito bites. You avoid mosquito bites by following these steps:

      • Use insect repellants when you go outdoors.
      • Wear LONG SLEEVES, LONG PANTS and SOCKS when outdoors.
      • Take extra care during peak mosquito biting hours. activities during these times.

So, all you who think that hiking in a dress or skirt, with legs uncovered is OK are taking chances with their health.

      Delete
    6. Well, there are no fireplaces or machinery where they were and they were wearing leggings so no flashing legs while they climbed, so neither point is applicable in this case.

      Delete
    7. Not to mention ticks 10:37. They carry equally devastating diseases. There may not be fireplaces or machinery but look at those slippery and uneven rocks 11:31. A skinned knee or shin is one misstep away...

      Delete
    8. I'd be way more worried about ticks and snake bites, wearing a skirt to hike in. We spent a lot of time outside and in the woods and mountains growing up-there's no way I'd hike without wearing pants. Having had my legs scratched up by brambles through my jeans, I'd hate to think about what they'd feel like in a skirt. Yowsers!

      Delete
    9. Anon 1:31. If the young women in the picture were wearing leggings they were invisible in the picture. Their legs appeared BARE below their skirts to me. I wouldn't recommend hiking with your legs exposed like that. You risk being scratched by bushes to say nothing of acquiring ticks and chiggers on your legs

      Delete
    10. Let's face it: It is not uncommon for women to wear outfits that aren't the most appropriate for whatever activity they are doing. Whether it's not comfortable or it restricts movement or they're risking a wardrobe malfunction. . .IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. But somehow it's only a problem when it's the Duggar girls wearing skirts, which for some reason gets on everybody's nerves. Doesn't make much sense to me.

      Delete
    11. 11:58, all three of them are wearing black leggings below their black skirts. Try enlarging the picture if you can't see that.

      Delete
    12. Anon 5:48. They may be wearing "black leggings" below their skirts but the leggings don't cover the lower part of their legs (from knee to ankle). Enlarging the picture doesn't change that. lol

      Delete
    4. IMO "Godly" is used far too often to describe people. Just as "hero" is being overused. Any time someone does any sort of service to another person, they're immediately hailed as a "hero" no matter how small the service was. I think we need to gear down a bit on heaping praise on everyone.

Is Kendra’s father in local government or something ? We don’t get as much info in the UK & many of the articles in hello & ok magazine are not available online to us either. You have piqued my interest with your comment & made me wonder apart from his work as a pastor, what else Mr Caldwell May do.

      Delete
    8. Fuzzy: Security reasons? Hardly. The Duggar family is virtually unknown outside conservative Christian circles. Kendra's father is the pastor of a church in the area but there is no indication he has any other job. He is well known there, but other than that most people in the rest of the country don't know who the Caldwells are. Sarah and Bristol Palin have more name recognition than this family does among the general population.

I’m glad you have answered the question, perhaps the poster feels these people are more important than they are, I only know about them through following the blog & tv show. Btw now I’m going to show even more ignorance & admit I do not know who Bristol Palin is either. I think Sarah Palin is a member of parliament or was at some point. 1. It may be ridiculous to you, but to those of us who have a certain modesty standard, it is not. Why condemn them for their choices regarding what is appropriate to wear hiking or isn't? They are dressing to please the Lord, not you nor anyone else. I can tell you that no matter what they are or aren't wearing, they'll be hot when it's hot and humid outside.

      Delete
    2. I agree skirts over leggings is ridiculous. Nothing immodest about wearing pants. They don't have to wear pants skin tight.
They wear skin tight tops when their pregnant ,so they must think that is modest.
They have very strange ways of dressing

      Delete
    3. Not ridiculous. It meets their standards of dressing in a feminine (skirt) and modest (leggings) way.

      Delete
    4. Diana- This is an honest question- Do you believe that wearing pants is displeasing to the Lord? If so, what would he find wrong with it? I don't see how wearing pants is immodest.

      Delete
    5. @6:33 Anonymous: I know godly born-again Christian women who wear pants and have a modesty standard. I believe we must obey the Lord when He tells you to do something. If you have a conviction about an area in your life (for instance, what is modest/what is not modest), it is better to obey. I grew up wearing shorts, pants, etc.. As an adult around age 38 prior to being born-again, I was deeply convicted to dress modestly. The Lord put it on my heart to stop wearing pants and shorts and to wear longer dresses/jumpers that fit a bit loosely. So for me to wear pants would be immodest and displeasing to the Lord since He has clearly told me not to. After 18 years, I still have the deep conviction to dress the same. I sew most of my dresses. I have no desire to wear pants but I wear leggings under dresses in the winter and if a dress is right below the knees; although most of my dresses are mid calf and longer. I hope my explanation answers your questions.

      Delete
    6. Diana- Where in your Bible does it specifically say that God does not want women to wear pants? On one hand, you say that you know godly born-again women who wear pants and are modest, yet you go on to say that God has told women not wear them and we are to obey that. Are they godly, or not? What you wear doesn't matter in the slightest to me, but what does bother me is when people imply that they are better or more Christian than someone else because of wearing long skirts. These are the superficial things that do not impress me at all and I don't think God is much impressed either. Extreme views on modesty can be just as much a source of pride as is flaunting layers of make-up, an expensive mink coat or flashy convertible.

      Delete
    7. @7:31 Anonymous: Why attack me? I was giving my personal experience (since I was asked) with obeying what God told me concerning modest dress. I do know godly born-again women who wear pants. That is their right to wear what they want and I do not judge them for it. I do not push my modesty views on anyone else. That is between me and God. I never said God told women to never to wear pants. No implications were made that I am better than anyone else by the way I dress. What I said was it would be immodest for me to wear pants because the Lord specifically laid it on my heart not to. I also said if you are convicted about something, it is better to obey God. By all means, dress how you want, but I will follow what the Lord is telling me.

      Delete
    8. 7:31 Actually she said that God impressed on her heart not to wear pants. Read Romans chapter 14 in the Bible. Our job as Christians is to follow what God leads us to do. We don’t need to worry about or judge anyone else. We need to follow His leading. It is sin to disobey what you know God wants you to do.

      Delete
    9. @11:34 Anonymous, thank you for the scripture reference. I wholeheartedly agree with what you said.

      Delete
    10. Diana & 11:34- So, God calls some women to wear long skirts, but others are called to wear pants? Or is he only laying it on the hearts of of certain women to dress according to certain standards of modesty and ignoring the rest? That's confusing and not at all logical. Why would God give mixed messages? One way is either right all the time in his eyes, or it's not- or it really doesn't matter to him at all and people pretty much make up their own minds about it.

    1. I started back hiking as soon as my baby was six months old. I have pictures of him crawling by glaciers. You just bring a pack of diapers, plastic bag for garbage, a change of clothes etc. I breastfed til he was two so that was easy. It was wonderful getting back to what I love and sharing it with baby.

    2. Wrap it up in a plastic bag and carry it back home to throw away.

    3. 5:26, many people go hiking with babies, I would never leave my kids home every time I went out into nature just because they need to be carried, that’s just part of being a parent.

    3. With names that sound so similar, it’s a given that Mrs. Caldwell will mix the names up. My children’s names don’t even sound alike and I switch them all the time. 😊

  24. Mabye the sister wanted to carry the baby...and the thing about pants/skirts, who cares, I think the skirts look cute. I like how they stick to their modest rules not being influenced by this liberal society. So many people are brainwashed by this liberal society today, so I think it’s great how they stick to what they believe in, it is easier to jump on the bandwagon and go with everyone else than stick to what you truly believe.

    1. I don't think wearing pants is "liberal". Women often wear them because they are comfortable and suitable for an activity they're engaging in. The skirt thingy is just a Duggar way of setting themselves apart. When the Duggar girls marry many of the "dress rules" have gone out the window which leads me to think they really don't "believe" in wearing only dresses or skirts.

    2. So true! As a modest dressing Christian, I applaud them for sticking to their values and modesty standards. Why shouldn't someone other than the mother carry the baby?! There's nothing wrong with siblings helping out. That's a family does for each other.

    3. I think it's ridiculous to think that women should only wear skirts because the Bible said that women and men shouldn't mix their clothing, when men at the time used to wear gowns.

    4. Wearing pants is hardly a liberal idea. It's fundamentalist religions that take the modesty thing to an extreme and make up their own rules.

    5. I didn’t mean wearing pants was liberal, I just meant that I think there’s nothing wrong with sticking to your beliefs and it’s harder in this day and age because of all the influences from our liberal society, so I think that it’s great that they are sticking to their beliefs because it’s harder to stick to their beliefs than go along with what the rest of the world thinks. I find it fascinating actually. So wearing pants doesn’t equal liberal, but the way everyone is talking, they are sounding like they should be wearing pants...like they are battered women or something because they decide to wear a skirt.

    6. @7:07 There is nothing wrong with a women deciding to wear only skirts and dresses or even if she only wears pants, like I do. It is her choice. However, there are times when wearing skirts or dresses are not appropriate (like when hiking.. pant legs should be tucked into shoes). This is what people are commenting on.

  26. I think it’s great they can spend time as a family, I don’t know why there’s negative comments, they are happy and spending time as a family. There’s so much bad stuff going on in the world, why pick apart a loving family

    1. I agree. They look happy and obviously truly enjoy being together. I don't understand why people post negative comments about their clothing, who's holding the baby, etc.

  27. Thanks for sharing these fun little updates about the married children and their families!
And by the way, as a teen I chose to start always wearing skirts and I like it! And it doesn’t at all interfere with my life. 🙂 And I also would offer to take a turn carrying a baby on a hike! They do get heavy and it’s nice to be able to pass them around.

    2. 12:33, there are no heavenly “benefits” to wearing dresses instead of pants, that is simply a personal preference

    3. 12:33- I'm all for women wearing whatever makes them comfortable, but I don't think wearing skirts is of any more benefit than wearing pants. It does not make someone more holy or Godly, as your comment implies.

    4. @10:54 I think God is the one who gets to decide how to hand out "heavenly benefits." Small actions can take on big meaning if done with the right heart and pure intentions. God may very well put a high value on the OP's decision to start wearing skirts. It's not for you to decide.

    5. 7:25 Clothing is superficial. I think a loving God cares more about how we treat our fellow human beings than what we wear.

    6. I think our loving God is concerned about ALL of our lives, whether it's how we treat people, what we wear, what we say, but most of all, the heart condition from which we think, speak, act, and make decisions.

    7. Also, those who wear unsuitable clothes, like skirts, while hiking are courting sickness. They are being irresponsible. Do you think that God will tell the tics and other bugs to not bother you? Only non-Christians get Lyne Disease?

When hiking wear protective clothes and make sure everyone else does too. That is the loving and God-fearing thing to do. Would you go out in a snow storm, with exposed legs and no hat? Same thing...

  28. I'm sure Kendra's mom is a fine woman, but I really don't understand why she continues to engage in these high risk and difficult pregnancies. Most of us would be just counting our blessings and leave pregnancies to others who don't have her health issues. So far she's come off OK but things may not go her way in the future.

    1. Her pregnancies are not high risk, it’s very common to have Braxton Hicks contractions months before you deliver without ever having been in a car accident.

    2. Anon 6:15. According to statements made by Kendra, her mother has internal damage from an auto accident and is at risk of going into labor too early. IMO she's rolling the dice with every pregnancy due to her known health issues.

    3. After hearing about Kendra's mother's health issues, I came to the conclusion that these numerous pregnancies are a sign of religious belief trumping everything. If she wants to do this, no one can stop her, but it seems rather foolish to me.

    4. God gives life. If they want to continue to have as many children as God gives them, then it isn’t our business. Obviously she has had many successful pregnancies. It is never our right to decide how many children anyone else has. They love and take care of their kids, so I hope they have many more.
