Joe and Kendra's Big News

"We're really looking forward to just going from one to two and just seeing what the adventure holds..."
-Kendra (Caldwell) Duggar

Joseph and Kendra Duggar have exciting news to share! Ten months after Garrett Duggar's June 8th arrival, the couple is thrilled to announce that they are expecting Baby #2! This baby will be Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's 14th grandchild.

"I hope that this little kiddo that we're going to have is like his mommy...a sweet personality," says Joe. He and Kendra have not announced the due date or the gender. You can watch their video announcement on the TLC website.

    1. On the finale Joe said they planned to build a house this year when asked what the next year might hold. Any update on that?!

  2. Congratulations Joe and Kendra. God definitely has a plan for your family. Can't wait to see the gender of the baby. Praying for a healthy pregnancy, healthy baby, and ease of delivery. God Bless

  3. That's not much of a surprise. She said she had the "itch". lol

  4. Next Joy will announce HER pregnancy. That itch has to be scratched you know.

  5. Well congratulations! They sure didn't waste any time having another baby. Since Kendra is so young she most likely have many children, may be as many as Michelle.

    1. How do you know she is even far enough along to learn the gender.

      Delete
    2. I thought about that too, but also he may have just said that out of habit because Garrett is a boy so he’s used to saying “him”/“his” in relation to a baby.

      Delete
    3. His (as opposed to her) is frequently used when the gender is unknown. I’d be a little surprised if they already know the gender as I wouldn’t expect her to be that far along, but who knows! 😊

      Delete
    4. She would be 12-16 weeks if due in October. Unlikely to know the gender unless they did genetic testing which can be done as early as 9 weeks. The new test is not harmful for the baby since it is just a normal blood draw for the mom. Some do it just to find out the gender.

      Delete
    5. There is a new genetic blood test that is performed at 12 weeks that can tell you the gender of the baby.

    6. They said that they haven’t announced the due date so not sure why you think she’s due in October...

  10. I was expecting one the couples to be announcing a pregnancy but I didn't think it would be Jinger or Kendra getting pregnant next as they were the last to give birth, I would have thought Joy Anna was mor fertile as she got pregnant so soon with her first but maybe she's doing a lot of breastfeeding and that can keep her from getting pregnant, who knows maybe Joe and Kendra will have the largest family out of the Duggar children.

    1. Well Joy did have a csection, and it is recommended that you wait longer to have your next baby than if you have a natural birth.

      Delete
    2. I agree, but also the fact that Jill and Joy have had C sections may explain why they’re waiting longer to have another one because I’ve heard it’s highly recommended women who have had C sections wait longer to have another child.

      Delete
    3. Kendra got pregnant on her honeymoon just like Joy. Joy is probably practicing some form of birth control due to C-section. And, Austin and Joy seem to have admittedly had the bumpiest first year of marriage. I mean, Austin flat out said he now understands why the divorce rate is so high. I appreciate his honesty. Anyway, congratulations to Joe and Kendra😀

      Delete
    4. Joy may aim for 2 years between pregnancies because of her c-section. That’s the usual doctor’a recommendation if she wants to try for a VBAC.

      Delete
    5. Anon @ 3:24 Breastfeeding does not prevent a woman from getting pregnant, it delays ovulation for a short time but it isn't wise to use it as contraception, many women have been caught out with a little surprise that way!

      Delete
    6. Seems to me Joy and Kendra would’ve both been the same fertile if you wanna use that term as both of them had their babies at 9 months after their wedding.... but Joy had to have a c-section so I’m sure she’s giving it a proper wait so she can try for a natural delivery next time

      Delete
    7. Kendra also got pregnant on honeymoon. Joy and Jill got pregnant very quickly, but had issues with deliveries and has c-sections. Kendra had an easy birth. I think Joy will wait a little. But I think Lauren should be pregnant very soon. She is gluten free, so that could have caused her miscarriage. Now she probably pays more attention to it.
I also think Anna is almost overdue for pregnancy announcement.

      Delete
    8. Jessa also had Spurgeon and Henry just 15 months apart. Now she is expecting the 3rd child, within 4.5 years of marriage.

      Delete
    9. I had a c section and was told to wait about 6 months before getting pregnant again. That was after a traumatic, emergency c section too. If there aren’t any complications and you do the work to get moving safely yet quickly the incision heals pretty fast. I did have a vertical uterine cut instead of a horizontal so I was closely monitored but that would have been the case even if I waited for two years. I got pregnant 6 months later and had an uneventful 2nd c section a year and 2 months after my first.
Point being...the wait period does not have to be that long.

      Delete
    10. Joy seemed to have a rough end to her pregnancy and a difficult and long delivery. I think she will wait a year or two to have another unless she decides to change her birth plans and go straight to the hospital/epidural route like Tori Bates just did.

      Delete
    11. 10:21, but if you want to try for a vbac (which I would assume Joy Anna does since she has said she wants a lot of kids) then the recommended time space is two years. Just because you CAN get pregnant and have an uneventful delivery afterwards does not mean that that’s what is going to happen.

      Delete
    12. 7:03, being gluten free doesn’t cause miscarriages.

      Delete
    13. I suspect that Joy did not do as good a job of taking care of herself during pregnancy. Her first pictures were with a mug the said "eating for two>" I think she may have overdone that. Gideon was a 10 # baby. Kendra did better. Jinger did the best of the Duggar girls. Felicity was born on time and not excessively big and no C section.

      Delete
  11. Surprising because Kendra seems to be the one who struggled the most and alluded to how challenging parenting was the most.

    1. She said they were surprised so I wonder if she was nursing and then got pregnant before her cycle ever started back up. That’s what happened to my mom with me lol

  12. I'm betting there will be at least four more pregnancy announcements in the next three months. Those Duggar women all have baby itch.

    1. Well some people are ready to get to certain stages in their lives before others. Just because you are ready to have kids doesn’t mean no one your age is.

      Delete
    2. I am four years older than her and I am no where ready to have a baby.

      Delete
    3. I know! When I was her age, I was mid-way through my undergraduate degree and enjoying college life. Can’t imagine have 2 kids when I was at her age.

      Delete
    4. Everyone does things at their own pace. My friend is about 6 months younger than I am. She'd been married few years and was pregnant with baby #2 by the time I got married. Most of my friends were married before me and already had kids when I got married in my early 20s.

      Delete
    5. I echo everyone's sentiment. At her age, I too was an undergrad, with dreams of the future. My own daughter was the same. I had no thoughts of marriage and children and my daughter was the same. My daughter, now married, still does not have children. There is no hurry.

@9:55. It had nothing to do with being ready to become a parent. You forget the most important stage in life, become a full-fledged adult. In fact, in terms of maturity, a young woman who is attending college, working and standing on her own two feet is many times more mature and responsible than someone who just got married and pregnant straight out of high school.
      They are growing up first.

      Delete
    6. 9:55- As an old timer, I have this observation: No one is ever really "ready" to have children. I love my kids dearly and wouldn't trade the experience of being a mom for anything. However, it's foolish to dismiss the overwhelming feelings you face head-on at any age when you become responsible for another human being. Your needs now take a backseat and will until the child leaves home. Along with that, you'll never stop worrying about your kids, no matter how old you or they are. Knowing this, I would advise young people to not rush into starting a family, especially when you're barely out of high school. You'll be a parent for a very long time and you can never get back those young adult years when you can take time to be independent, pursue other dreams and just figure out who you are. I also think that young women should never bank on having a man to support her. That just isn't realilty for most people.
The Duggars have created a TV/media empire all their own and I would bet that the young marrieds are benefitting from it financially. They even live in Duggar properties. Their example is not reality. It's hard work being married and having a family under the best of circumstances. I feel sorry for someone like Kendra. I'm sure she's a good mother and I hope she's happy. However, the culture in which she was brought up doesn't encourage any other role for her. That is what I find sad.

      Delete
    7. It's kind of sad. Kendra is a pretty young lady. She should be enjoying her youth and not be having babies yet. They are raised with different values then most. Getting married and having child after child is the most these poor young girls can hope for. I know some here won't agree and that's fine, but this is my opinion. I also am a Christian.

      Delete
    8. They aren’t poor, young girls. They are adult women who have made the choice to marry and have children. It doesn’t matter how many of you agree or disagree with what they do. They chose it! No one held a gun to their heads and said get married and have children. Jana would not still be single if that was the case. I married young and don’t regret it at all!!! I know a lot of people who get to the end of life and look back and regret the time spent at work apart from family. Some of us choose family first.

      Delete
    9. Anon 11:25. Your post is spot on!

      Delete
    10. momofchickie- Interesting that you say most of your friends married and started families so young. Perhaps it's a matter of geography, but I've had the opposite experience. When I graduated from high school in the early 1970's, most of my friends went off to college or trade school, including myself. Marriage was the furthest thing from our minds. There were a few who got pregnant and ended up getting married very young. Not many stood the test of time, however. Fast forward to my own children. They went on to post-high school education, as did the vast majority of their friends. I can think of two who ended up getting married before they were 20 and they have struggled.
I don't think getting married right out of high school is an example of doing something at one's own pace. I believe it's a sign of immaturity and lack of patience to delay a life-changing chapter until you're better prepared to meet the emotional and financial responsbilities involved with raising a family. Yes, some young marriages succeed, but divorce statistics show it's better to wait a few years.

Anonymous I don't agree with your opinion about what you just said She should be enjoying her youth & be having babies yet. That is very disrespectful of what you are saying. How do you know if she is not enjoying her youth? She is. There are some women her age that are stay at home moms. That is very disrespectful of what you said.

    2. People always say they should support themselves financially. They work in family business and have TLC as extra income. What more do you want?

      Delete
    3. @OP's comment - Not so much an issue of supporting themselves as it is explaining HOW they're supporting themselves. None of the kids will really come out and say that. They make it seem like everyone has big weddings and big honeymoons, moves into big new houses, and has big new babies. Nothing to it! Which is far from the truth, so why not spend more time explaining what's really going on? If this show is their "ministry" then they should address how two very young adults with no education past home high school are able to live they way they do. Now that would be a "ministry" that would interest a lot of people. If the only way they can live like this is because of the TV audience, then admit it! Admit that without the show, they'd be in a little apartment over someone's garage, trying hard to make ends meet, looking for better employment or going back to school, and worrying if there will be another mouth to feed, like every other married 19 or 20 year old. "Reality" show? I don't think so.

Lauren has such a beautiful spirit that no doubt she will be thrilled for another sister in law having a baby but her heart & arms must ache for her little blessing in heaven. Congratulations Joe & Kendra I wish them every happiness for this pregnancy & for a safe delivery. However I am praying for Lauren & Josiah that they are strong in their hearts to deal with babies that seem to come so regularly in this family, I can only imagine how difficult it must be for them both.

      Delete
    3. I didn’t do anything to prevent having other children after my first child. I didn’t get pregnant again for over two more years. Not taking birth control doesn’t guarantee another child in a short amount of time. Her mom has spaced her kids out and I assume that she didn’t use birth control either. She was probably using natural planning methods, so she didn’t expect the pregnancy.

    2. Breastfeeding can act as a natural birth control, for some women that can last for over a year, but you don’t know until after you have your first baby and your cycle starts again.

      Delete
    3. Who knows? I can see her having 19 kids. She gets pregnant easily and seems to have no trouble giving birth.

    4. Kendra is very young. Even though she has lived in a culture where contraception is considered a sin, she may have had an irrational notion that it wouldn't happen to her so quickly and easily. Maybe she was secretly hoping she wouldn't get pregnant right away. She could have very well been shocked.

    5. Breastfeeding only works as a birthcontrol if you feed your baby every 3 hours on the dot and would not use a pump. Than it is a pretty good birthcontrol otherwise it wouldn't be.

    1. Most women (I heard 70%, but who knows) do not ovulate while nursing or for a time after they stop. So it may come as a surprise if she was still nursing or had just stopped.

    2. I was exclusively nursing my first born every 3 hours around the clock and when he was 6 months I found out that I was pregnant. Breastfeeding is not working for everyone as a spacing method. :)

    3. Or they could have practiced natural family planning. Apparently it's pretty effective...

    4. Anon 1:49, as long as a woman is nursing consistently(several times per day), she will not ovulate

      Delete
    5. Anon 12:29. Well that didn't happen to me. I got pregnant again and I was still nursing my daughter. So did my aunt. I remember her nursing both my cousins who were a year apart. Nursing is NOT a reliable form of BC.

  41. Congratulations to Joe and Kendra. My guess is a baby boy born in October.

I agree we will see other pregnancy announcements this year. I think they will include Joy-Anna, Lauryn and Anna. I think it will still be a bit before we see an announcement from Abbie, Jill or Jinger. I would guess we will also hear of at least one courtship this year, perhaps Jeremiah or Jedediah.

    1. Why would Abbie "wait" to get pregnant? Having babies is the purpose of getting married according to the Duggars. Don't you remember how her sisters bugged Jinger when she didn't get pregnant right away? I don't think Abbie wants to have that happen to her.

      Delete
    2. I think you're right, except for Abbie. They get married to have babies so why would she not join the parade and take her "rightful" place in the family?

      Delete
    3. Not sure why I think John and Abbie will wait; just a feeling I have. Nothing to basebot on.

      Delete
    4. They don’t get married to have babies! They get married, because they are in love with their spouses. As Christians we believe marriage to be until death do us part. They would never marry just to have kids when they expect to be with that person until they die. There has to be a relationship first. Part of marriage is also having children, but Duggars would never marry just for that reason.

      Delete
    5. I think it is Jill who would wait. Derick is studying. Having a newborn with two small kids in a very small house and not much money would not be rational.

      Delete
    6. Abbie will be 27 in April. She probably would want to have a baby sooner than later.

    7. @10:58. Many faiths believe in marriage till death. Christianity is not unique in that view. And you would be surprised that even atheists stay married.
It is not that the Duggars get married to have only children. It is how young they are when they do and how fast they rush to to altar, in fear of defrauding each other.

Most modern couples take their time to get to know each other prior to marriage because they take the marriage commitment seriously.

  43. I predict next week Lauren will announce her pregnancy.
Then the following week - Anna.
Joy will announce her pregnancy on their wedding anniversary in May.
I think Abbie is already pregnant and does not want to announce watching how her gluten free issue can affect her pregnancy.

    1. How would Abbie needing to be gluten free effect a pregnancy?

    2. I think they'll space the announcements out a bit more. Each one needs a couple of weeks to be the center of attention.

    3. How does not eating gluten affect pregnancy? I have to be careful of my gluten intake or I suffer miserably.

    4. Naw. They'll space them out more than that. The excitement from this announcement hasn't died down.

  45. I love this family and I hope the producers don't just concentrate on the births and weddings. I just want the show to continue and I hope they show more of the families interacting. Show a day with Jessa's family as the kids are growing and playing. Her videos of the kids are cute on Instagram so that could easily be on the show more. I don't think they should show Jessa's births anymore as there will soon be too many. Just show the first time births or the 2nd childs births. And please show more of the guys at their work on the show and not just online videos. Maybe this will reduce all the ridiculous statements that they don't work and can't take care of the family. They already say what they do for work but evidently some people just don't get it and they need to show it more.

    2. Riddle me this - if the purpose of life is to produce as many children as possible, why didn’t Christ have children? Booyah.

    3. Mom of many- You deserve credit for walking the pro-life talk by adopting. It's easy to carry signs, light candles, and promote the rhetoric without having to really do anything once children are brought into the world. Too many conservatives appear to only champion the unborn, but not so much once they start breathing on their own.
I will say this: You are under the mistaken idea that abortions will cease if they're criminalized. Society has been down that road before and desperate women resorted to desperate and dangerous measures. Would your "pro life" world imprison abortionists as well as the women enlisting their services? Would you go so far as some Texas lawmakers, who wish to impose the death penalty on them? Would you like to see every miscarriage be suspect and investigated? If so, that's not being pro-life. IMO, that's declaring a war on women who want nothing more than to have a choice in whether or not to continue a pregnancy and not have the government dictating the outcome. You can quote scriptures and claim a fertilized egg is a person, deserving of all the rights of the living and breathing. However, that is not a belief shared by all and it's not up to you to impose yours on the rest of us.
I am an adoptive mother, too. I'm thankful that my children's birth mothers chose to bring them into the world. I'm also grateful that they weren't forced to do so under the threat of a punitive law. Regarding your insinuation that having lots of children will somehow innoculate you from depression- it is ludicrous. It shows that you don't know anything about mental illness.

      Delete
    4. "No depression meds needed for you" ? How short-sighted, contemptuous, untrue, and insulting. I suffered from post-partum depression after I had my first kid, who was/is perfectly healthy. Depression happens to people who are pro-life too !

      Delete
    5. Mom of many- Are you suggesting that having children is going to somehow prevent mental illness and make life all rainbows and sunshine? If you are, perhaps you need to talk with the women who've suffered from post-partum depression. My own mother battled it with each one of her six kids. Read a bit of history, when women did not have the benefits of contraception and were forced to have one child after another, whether they wanted to or not. They were at the mercy of relentless childbearing and bone-weary fatigue as a result. Being pro-life should mean you care about the people struggling in this world, hopefully more than you care about a fertilized egg.

    6. 8:18, I’m curious when does a “fertilized egg” turn into a baby in your opinion?

      Delete
    7. My mother had 8 kids and I was aware that she was constantly depressed from the time I was very young. She didn’t have a choice because the Catholic Church told her birth control was a sin. My dad worked very hard but it wasn’t easy just putting food on the table and there was no money for any extras. I know my parents felt bad that they couldn’t give us vacations or piano lessons. To say that having lots of kids will prevent depression is ridiculous.

  47. I realize Jill and Derick are busy with his studies, perhaps they will be ready to adopt. They have talked about their desire to do so several times. It was also mentioned that adoption is after your children are nine months plus. . . Jessa was told so by their friends with children and then adopted. TIME WILL TELL.
As many fans have said "we miss Jill." Any updates are appreciated.

    3. 9:07 I really doubt any of the Duggars will adopt. They place a high priority on having biological children- that's their identity. The more, the better.

    4. 8:23, both Jill and Jessa have expressed a desire to adopt. They may both have a few biological children first, but that doesn’t mean they won’t adopt in the future.

  48. I'm curious is they will choose some name theme for their kinds.
Josh and Anna have the "M" theme going.
Jill and Derick had biblical references.
Jessa and Ben went for the names of religious leaders.
Joy and Austin named Gideon also based on some biblical reference.
Jinger and Jeremy I don't think had any theme in mind.
And Garrett was named after Michelle's father, and it is also Joseph's middle name. I'm curious if they stick to letter G or would have no theme at all. Seems like in Kenrda's family all kids are just named without any there.
I also recall that in Lauren's family all boys' names start with the first letter of their father's name (D) and girls' have the first letter of their mom's name (L).

I love all the Duggars, but Kendra's always been one of my favorites. She's always so pleasant, and she has a great personality.
