Duggar #19 Turns 9

Today is Josie Duggar's 9th birthday! When we started our blog almost nine years ago, she was just a few weeks old and was fighting for her life in the NICU. Today, she is a spunky, happy, and healthy child. Happy birthday, Josie!

    2. Oh please. She is the 19th living child of Jim Bob and Michelle. It's a convenient label.

    3. Does not matter which number she is, she is her own person. Happy Birthday sweetie, hope you have a great day.

    4. Ask Michelle how many children she had. The answer would not be 19.

  3. Wow can't believe josie is 9 already, I remember so clearly those episodes about her birth & the struggle she had during those months in the NICU. Have the happiest of birthdays dear little josie 🎂

    1. Yes, those early months were scary even for the fans who cared about their family, back when she was so tiny and fragile. What a blessing to see her now.

    2. I don't understand why the Duggar children don't go to college to become doctors and nurses, yet they relied heavily on people who accomplished those professions to save Josie. You would have thought that experience would have inspired at least one of the 18 others to study medicine.

    3. My son is studying medicine (we live in the uk) & I know how terribly difficult it is to get into, not just academically but all the voluntary work he did in a hospice for 2 years from 16-18 (very difficult for someone so young sitting with dying patients). Maybe non of the Duggar children apply for medicine as they are home schooled & im not sure what actual qualifications they take so that they could move forward on to college. It would be a lovely thing for one of them to do though & a great way of saying thank you for all the medics did for josie. I did hear that one of the little girls did want to study to become a doctor at one time but not sure who it was.

    4. 7:58- There’s quite a few minor children left at home. It’s not impossible that someone may yet go to college and pursue a career in medicine. I don’t think it’s likely, as the family appears to prefer being self-employed within the family businesses and the women have defined roles as homemakers.

    5. Everybody is different. Some people do what you suggest, but others have interests that lie elsewhere.

    6. 7:58 AM -- Seems like you are putting down the Duggars for not going to medical or nursing school. You could say that about anyone. Along the same lines, why not let's ask why they didn't become computer programmers, because they use technology so much.

    7. I don't think anon 7.58 is putting the Duggars down for not going to medical or nursing school, they are simply stating they are surprised the amount of time josie spent in the NICU hasn't encouraged any of them so far to do so. It's often the case that people go into those professions because of family experiences. I am a nurse/midwife & my son is about to qualify as a doctor & both of us chose the professions because of family members we had seen so well looked after by our amazing medical staff in the UK. I really don't think the person intended to put anyone down, & as I said in a comment on a different page anyone who chooses to be a stay at home mum does the hardest job in the world.

    8. I do not think the comment was meant to be a criticism, but just an observation. However, I doubt that the Duggar children would have the educational background to earn acceptance into medical school. And it is very expensive. You need an actual bachelor's degree, a history of medical-related volunteering, recommendations from current doctors as well as excellent MCAT scores.

There is also the family culture. The Duggars parents stress working young, debt-free life, early marriage, and not academics.

  12. I was just as worried for Michelle as I was for Josie at Josie's birth. And poor Jim Bob looked so scared. Those were some hard episodes to watch. So glad everything worked out and Josie is having her 9th birthday today. Happy Birthday, Dear Josie!

  17. I remember watching the episode of her birth I was hoping that it wasn’t really happening I was hoping that Michelle would be able to countie the pregnancy and get to at 34-38 weeks! When 25 weeks popped up and they couldn’t get her blood pressure under control I could tell I was about to be watching a premature baby be born I haven’t forgotten it ever since! I just can’t believe how far she’s come it just amazing the power and grace of God! Happy belated birthday Josie

    2. Unfortunately, there are many loving and nurturing families whose children don't make it. My friend works in the NICU and it can be both a joy and a heartbreak in there. How much a baby is loved is not the deciding factor...
