  3. This preachers last name was Spurgeon. It seems like a rather unusual first name to me, but to each his own. Maybe they'll call him Elliot. That's what I would do.

  20. Ok I'm not hating, I absolutely love the Duggars, but I burst out laughing at Spurgeon. It's so unfortunate... I would've called him Elliot Spurgeon, Quincy Elliot or Elliot Quincy. It's not my choice but poor kid. If I was him I would go by the middle name. If he goes to public school the bullies will get him for sure... Bless him No hate it's just my honest opinion. I'll probably grow to love it like I did with Isreal!

    ReplyDelete
  21. A unique name and it sounds awesome! Congratulations!

  40. Just a beautiful baby and family! You are blessed.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It is a strong name indeed but I hope they use Elliot

    ReplyDelete
  42. Totally love Jessa but not a fan of the name they picked. Happy for them and I am sure we will all get use to it. P.S. I named my kid Hadassah (after Esther in the Bible) and it took awhile for people to warm-up to it. I LOVE it though :D

    ReplyDelete
  43. Nice, strong name. I know another Spurgeon who is a well liked pastor in Canada. I know a couple who had a baby girl in June....just after Elisabeth Elliott died and named her Elisabeth....after Elisabeth Elliott.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Finally. Interesting name but cute! Congratulations!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Aww he's so cute! I don't particularly like the name Spurgeon but I do like Elliot! : )

    ReplyDelete
  46. WOW!!! I wasn't expecting such a unique name. He will spend his whole life correcting people on ow to spell and pronounce his name. For a couple with such popular names it was a surprising choice.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm thinking they'll continue to call him Quincy *hoping*

    ReplyDelete
  48. Spurgeon is different. Elliot is a cute name. He should go by his middle name.

    ReplyDelete
  49. He is precious! Love the name as well. God bless you both! :)

  51. Oh Lord! That's so terrible! I'm laughing as I type this because I'm just in shock. Why would you do that to a kid? He's a beautiful boy and I thank God that he's healthy and that Jessa is healthy but that name! Yikes!

    1. That is what makes waiting for a name more interesting It would be very confusing if we all used the same names over and over again or they could have used Benson some other there are all the different countries do such as use different god names there are plenty of them we seem to deserve them our pets ou pets

  52. Congratulations!!! Miss seeing you all on tv. Best wishes to you all.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I like the name Elliot. It's my cousin's name. I think they should have used that as the first name. Spurgeon would make a better middle name.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Spurgeon ??? He is a beautiful baby. Best wishes to your family.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The name Spurgeon is a Scandinavian name meaning little twig.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Charles Spurgeon was a great man of God. However, not a name I would select for my child. Parents should really think about children's name before they name them. Children must grow up and live with these given names. I am pretty sure he will love his nickname "Quincy".

    ReplyDelete
  57. Well......far be it for me to criticise a baby's name but come on!! Spurgeon!! I am Scottish and believe me, it sounds terrible in a Scottish accent lol. Nevertheless, I wish them all the best of course. x

    ReplyDelete

    1. I know that accent well and I can understand that

  58. Love the name!!!! He is ADORABLE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  59. the kid will probably like his middle name better

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hi Lily and Ellie,
Thank you for your posts, I love hearing about the Duggars life. I was just noticing that you don't have Spurgeon Elliot up on the top of the page yet with the rest of the family yet...

    ReplyDelete
  61. That's awesome!! I love that it's different and not crazy, difficult to pronounce or super common! I think it evidences Jessa's spunk and Ben outreach passion. I wouldn't have chosen it for any of my sons but I think it fits the Seewald family awesomely. Congrats!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Wouldn't have guessed that name in a million years.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Hopefully they have a nickname picked out for the little guy or just continue to use Quincy. I can just imagine hearing his name being called out. "Spurgeon where are you".

    ReplyDelete
  64. Will they still call him Quincy? Or Quince. LOL!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Would love it if Jessa & Ben call their son Quincy or Elliott. Both names are great.

      Delete
  65. Spurgeon Elliot. Interesting! I was not expecting that... I thought his middle name would be Benjamin it something. Nonetheless, a very creative name!

    ReplyDelete
  66. He is adorable!! God's richest blessings for your family!! ♥

    ReplyDelete
  67. It took them that long to decide on that name!
    Joan and Marion

    ReplyDelete
  68. Congratulations on your Blessed bundle of Joy!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Why couldn't they have named the baby Charles Spurgeon?!
    Marilyn

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because that's not what they wanted to name him. Ben and Jessa put a great deal of thought into choosing a meaningful name for *their* child. I feel people posting about how "terrible" or "strange" etc they think the name is are not being very kind or thoughtful. The naming of one's child is a personal decision and should not be open for public debate.

    ReplyDelete

  80. When is the TLC special about Jessa (her baby, Spurgeon) and Jill? Are they going to do a special on Bringing Up Bates about the Jinger and Lawson courtship?

    ReplyDelete
  81. I'm not exactly a fan of Spurgeon bug Elliot is a great middle name. Quincy will still be a great nick name!! Little S.E.S is adorable. :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. The baby is so cute I hope he continues to look that cut congrats jessa and Ben

    ReplyDelete
  83. What a wonderful, unique name. A lot of people seem to think that because the name is a little different, Jessa and Ben shouldn't have chosen it, which seems a little silly to me.

P.S. Lily & Ellie, I love the new header and color scheme! :) Thank you for maintaining such a wonderful blog.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Thank you for updating the banner!
    Such a cute little boy.

    ReplyDelete
  85. As others have said, it wouldn't have been MY first choice, but he's not my child either. People often grow into their names and I expect Spurgeon will too. Gods bless him and his family.

    ReplyDelete
  86. The header looks amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Why not Charles Elliott Seewald? Were they worried no one would know they named him after Spurgeon. Does it matter that people know?

    ReplyDelete
  88. They'll probably call him Spurgie.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Stop with all the rude and horrible comments! Would you guys really tell Jessa and Ben to their faces that you hate what they named their son and think he should go by his middle name? If not, you certainly shouldn't be posting it online. If so, how would you feel if, when you introduced your new baby to your friends, they grimaced and begged you to call him or her by a different name? Think about what you're posting. Is it building people up or tearing them down? Does what you say or write lead others closer to Jesus Christ, or does it distract them from Him. I was certainly not uplifted when I read some of those hateful comments. What would Jesus say?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Agreed! Well said! I am happy for them and love that they don't let negative opinions stop them from being who they were created to be. After all, we should be aiming to please God and not man. It is a perfect name for their child because they carefully and thoughtfully chose it. He is a blessed baby!

      Delete
    2. I don't think jessa expects him to go by his first name all the time. She mentioned that he will go by both his first name and middle and Quincy. Honestly it is very unusual and people may not understand why he was named that and don't understand the significance personally I would not name a child that but it is their choice and it has a good meaning and intention behind it. Regardless of name he is a beautiful child and its a beautiful time in their life and he's such a blessing. people seem to be disagreeing about the name but always end it on something positive and that he is such a blessing.

      Delete
    3. When and where did Jessa announce that?

  90. One of the greatest men I ever knew was Surgeon Leonard and we called him Spud . I love his name ! A great name for your beautiful baby and kids may find his name and the story behind it interesting .

    ReplyDelete
  104. You guys are parents- enjoy! Welcome, Spurgeon! Blessings for all of you.

  109. I love Spurgeon Elliot's name! I would even call him by both names...I think it sounds good and what a fine pair of shoes to fill for both men. You watch, other peoples' sons will come up being named Spurgeon. It's just a matter of time. It is a fine strong name...worthy of a fine Christian boy to grow into. He will wear it just fine.

  111. I wanted to congratulate Ben and Jessa but first I must say some of these posts astound me. Kindness matters. Where are our manners? This is a little newborn. His parents named him. Naming a baby is not a public opinion contest. I think because they are public figures we forget they are human. Let's respect the dignity of all.

  112. Please stop trying to get us to buy People Magazine, it is such and immoral magazine. The images are so very indecent. As a Christian, I don't understand the Duggars love affair with
People. Would the Duggars ever purchase this magazine if they were not in it? Please
put this on the website. It is an honest Christian point of view.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Since its such an immoral magazine ,good thing they are shining a light into the darkness there, right? The people who choose that sort of magazine need to hear what they have to say. A christian perspective should care about the eternal well being of others.

  114. He is so cute!!! I like the name Elliot.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Moody Spurgeon? Sorry, Anonymous, you've got your preachers mixed up. Try Dwight L. Moody and Charles Spurgeon! And please, folks, can't we give a couple the right to name their baby whatever they so desire without picking the name to bits? They spent a LOT of time working with this name and it is loaded with meaning for them. So lay off! "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all!"

    ReplyDelete
  116. That is nice how you put a lot of thought into naming your baby. Beautiful name Jessa and Ben and your baby is just precious.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Handsome little man. He's blessed by having parents that will guide him in the ways of God. His name is an honor to those he was named after.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Beautiful baby, and every couple has the right to pick a name! Similar to another comment, I feel it is wrong to encourage people to buy People Magazine and to watch TLC. They invite these media outlets into their homes to photograph and film them, yet the finished products (magazine article and tv show) are off limits in their own homes. Makes no sense.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Anonymous, you're thinking of Moody Spurgeon MacPherson, the fictional character from the Anne of Green Gables series.

    1. Right! And the joke was that he couldn't grow up to be anything but a preacher with a name like that to live up to.

  120. Wow !!! That was not the name u was expecting. But such an adorable and meaningful name , for an adorable an cute baby :)

    ReplyDelete
  121. The name is really unique. It takes a while to get used to it :)

I live in Finland and the name brings to my mind a finnish word "spurgu" which means a an alcoholic :( So Quincy or Elliot would be a great name to call a cute little baby.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Aww, their baby is adorable!
Spurgeon is a very different name, I would not have guessed they'd use it.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Moody Spurgeon was a character on the television series "Road to Avonlea". Charles Spurgeon was the preacher from the 1800's/

    ReplyDelete
  124. Considering all of the unusual names that people name their children, isn't it odd that everyone chooses to go after Ben and Jessa's child? The Duggars have openly stood for their faith for years, so no matter what, people will always attack them from every side, even it's their new baby's name. We're acting more like babies than the little life that we're already attacking.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I don't like how Jedidiah & Jeremiah are on different lines in the cover photo since they are twins.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I also preferred all the grandkids at the end after Josie, so it would stay in birth order.

    ReplyDelete
  127. By living their lives in the spotlight, they are opening themselves up to people's opinions. You can't have one without the other.

    ReplyDelete

  131. On the one hand I understand the concept of a namesake. On the other hand naming a baby after a person or three people who had extraordinary accomplishments does fit the definition ofpretentious. Godly people are supposed to goto the right so which of these is they right

    ReplyDelete
  132. Thanks Jessa and Ben, that made me cry! I always wanted kids and I also had chosen very meaningful names. This is beautiful. If you have another boy, feel free to use one of "my" names, Patrick Samuel. He was to be named after St. Patrick, missionary to the Irish (my husband's family is Scots-Irish) and Samuel who also, when he heard the voice of God, listened and responded. May God bless you both and little Spurgeon. May he, through the power of the Holy Spirit, "live up to" his name.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Congratulations JESSA and BEN, I THINK IT IS A BEAUTIFUL NAME AND THE MEANING BEHIND MAKE IT MORE SPECIAL. GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILY

  134. Congratulations Jessa and Ben. Welcome baby Spurgeon Elliot. May God bless your famnily. Jessa you are an outstanding role model for other women, showing that you can be both a Godly and strong woman. May the three of you, in the security of God's hand, have a wonderful and blessed life together. Peace.

  135. Naming our children is an honor for us,as parents, so I believe he'll grow into his name, just as we all did. He'll know his parents put time and meaning behind their choice.
