Joy Speaks Out on Courtship

The five oldest Duggar daughters recently sat down with PEOPLE Magazine to do an interview for this week's issue. 19-year-old Joy-Anna Duggar shared details on her relationship with Austin Forsyth. The two are childhood friends and announced their courtship in November.

“We’ve gotten to experience so much already in our relationship,” Joy-Anna told PEOPLE. “Lots of church ministries, road trips, hiking, hunting and remodeling houses together.”

When asked whether she and her honey would be tying the knot anytime soon, Joy responded that she doesn't know: “You would have to ask Austin what he’s thinking and my dad, but I’m excited to see what God has in store for us in the next year.”

Pick up this week's issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday, for more from the Duggar sisters.

  1. Any truth to the rumors about Anna? Will be praying for her to have wisdom. The kids are the priority.

  2. Joy should be able to have a voice when it comes to her own engagement and wedding!!! Why would Austin and jimbob have to be asked what's in store for Joy??BOTH joy and Austin need to have a say so in this big life decision. Parents includes, of course!
This is making it look like Joy is being traded for cattle or something!!! Or like females in the family don't have an opinion or voice on anything....

    1. Obviously if she didn't want to continue in the courtship, she would end it. This is her prudent way of saying she's happy how things are going. She can't speak for Austin.

    2. I totally agree with you it sounds like Jim Bob says when they can marry and only then.. and if he doesn't like the person it's a no u can't even give the relationship a try.. I feel sorry for his kids

    3. She's probably saying that Austin hasn't asked her and she didn't know if he had spoken to her dad. It's important to some women to have the suitor get her father's permission for her hand in marriage

    4. I agree, Austin hasn't asked her yet. Some people are so quick to judge.

  3. I have notice something interesting: As the Duggars have 10 boys 9 girls, while their friends the Bates have 10 girls and 9 boys
Kt is funny the grandchildren are following suit though the first 6 grandchildren each While Bates have 4 granddaughters, 2 grandsons, while the Duggars have 4 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, before Jessa and Jill give birth Duggars 7&8 grandchildren

  4. Congratulations and many blessings your way! While I am here, I would like to ask a question: would you kindly post the brand name of Jinger's crossbody purse? It's a tannish-yellow with a brown outside pocket and strap. I think it's just lovely and would like to purchase one. Thank you so much!

    1. I'm sure it came from a thrift store. Jim Bob clued us in to Jinger's shopping habits when he told Jeremy. Remember, you have to buy used and save the difference! So I can't imagine she paid full price. That would be mighty unDuggarish.

    2. I saw a similar one at either walmart or target..

    3. Well let's hear from Jinger about it and ask if she knows where to get that bag. Why are you putting words on her mouth?

    4. You can't be sure it was from a thrift store. Her wedding dress was custom made. She traveled to NYC to get engaged, bought all brand new furniture for her entire apartment ...she has money. The "thrifting" is for TV only.

    5. You know... traveling to NYC isn't as bank-busting as everyone thinks. If you get good deals on hotels and airfare, it's doable.

    6. Yes, but traveling to NYC when you bring a bunch of family members with you is different. I've never known the Duggars to travel there unless NBC is bringing them in for an interview, or Discovery is bringing them in for taping or contract signing. It's not exactly their favorite travel destination. It's not their type of "theme park."

    7. they own a plane not sure if they used it. No matter where the purse came from she could still know who the manufacture is. Let your light shine what you put out into the world you get back.

    8. The place they bought the furniture at was new, but still on discount. The prices they showed were very reasonable. Plus, Jeremy is a working man! And a gorgeous one at that - It's not like they have to always scrounge the bottom of the barrel!

  5. People magazine is a filthy dirty gossip magazine. Why do I want that in my home? Why do the Duggars endorse this nasty rag? Why do they encourage their fans to purchase this magazine? Do they read People magazine? Do they have a copy of People on their coffe table for their family to read? I think the answer is NO.

    1. I totally agree. It's all about the $ this raggy magazine makes! Using any Duggars equates to $ales.

    2. I asked this a thousand times and never got an answer...

    3. What is so "filthy dirty" about people magazine? I'm christian and I've read it pretty often. A friend of mine has a subscription and gives me the mags when she is done each week. I haven't seen anything "filthy" or "dirty" about this magazine. You speak as if this is an X rated magazine, which it is definately not! Maybe it's your personal opinion that you just don't care for it, and that is ok.

    4. People magazine pays the Duggars that's why they endorse it.

    5. I had a free subscription of People sent to me from some company for a few weeks, and it is kinda trashy.

    6. after all the craziness from Hollywood i wouldn't buy any magazine with stars in it. I go to them for their art not their politics

    7. People magazine is not filthy or trashy. ITS A Gpod Magazine.I'm Christian. They have it at my church in the office. Everyone at my church reads it.

  6. Joy's article was not very informative. If she has no idea about her future with Austin, what do they talk about? Are they really communicating?

  7. Wishing Joy-Anna and Austin all the happiness in their courtship.

  8. How can she be "courting" with Austin, but not know if he is going to marry her or not? Wouldn't that be dating WITHOUT a purpose? I thought once you entered a courtship with a Duggar, you were moving towards marriage. So what's not to know? Is she courting with him, or just dating him? And what an awkward, outdated system, anyway.

    1. she said she didnt know when or how long a courtship. And courtships can end also it is not a done deal.

  9. This was the saddest quote Joy has ever said. It's up to her if she wants to marry not Austin or her father.

  10. I hate hunting. Sad that Joy said that. Killing animals for sport is cruel.

    1. As long as you eat the animal it's fine. I personally hate when people mount deer heads, though. That's definitely cruel.

    2. No, it's NOT hypocritical. Killing for sport is different than killing for a purpose -- food or hides.

  11. I come from a very conservative family much like the Duggars. That being said, what she said probably just means that she wants to marry him and they have probably even hinted at it amongst themselves. But in our culture we still wait for the man to surprise us with a proposal. Therefore she probably only means that if he is planning on popping the question she wouldn't know. He would be secretly going to her father and asking for his blessing. Then it would be planned as a surprise.

She would definitely have the choice to say no if it isn't really what she wants. It's definitely a misconception that they are obligated and forced to be married to whoever their dad "auctions" them off to.

And the guy would never ask the girl's father for his blessing unless the girl had first indicated that she wanted to marry him.

But for Joy it's probably still so early in the relationship that she would feel as if she was being forward to assume that they are going to get married soon.

Like I said, I come from a family with a similar mindset. Hope I explained it good enough.

    2. When my husband and I were dating, we had discussed marriage, but I had no idea when he would formally ask me to marry him and give me the ring! Some of the commenters here are just looking for something to pick apart.

  12. Wishing you both all the happiness and love. While many just don't understand, I applaud your resolution to live by your own morals and character. God bless and guide you in all you do.

  13. I don't like People magazine. Why should I pay $5.00 or whatever it costs just to read about the Duggar clan?

    1. I don't pay for those magazines, either. A big fat waste of money.

    2. I brought the people magazine it only cost me $2.50.

  14. Why can't Joy ask Austin what he's thinking?? Why do these girls have to be so coy about their relationships? Don't they realize that deferring to the man makes them look degraded?

  15. Why say anything if she is just going to say ask my dad. Ugh!
