'Jill & Jessa: Counting On' Finishes Strong

Jana Duggar, Anna Duggar, and Joy Duggar make freezer meals
during the third segment of Counting On

As we reported two weeks ago, the first segment of Jill & Jessa: Counting On attracted just over 2.2 million viewers, received a rating of 0.8, and ranked among the top eight cable shows for adults 18-49 that aired on Sunday, December 13th.

The second segment of Counting On, which aired on Sunday, December 20th, received a rating of 0.7 and a viewership of nearly 1.9 million and ranked among the top 14 cable shows for that day.

But here's the good news: The third and final segment of Jill & Jessa: Counting On, which aired two days after Christmas, did even better than the first two! Although the rating was 0.8, part three made it into the top five cable shows among adults 18-49 and drew in nearly 2.5 million viewers.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta remained the highest ranked and most watched show on each of these days.

Devastating News from Cousin Amy

We are grieved to announce that the rumors about Amy (Duggar) King's parents are true. The niece of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar informed Entertainment Tonight that her parents have filed for a divorce.

"It has been quite the year to be a Duggar," Amy told ET.  "The family has gone through a lot of heartache this year, but we will get through it. Right now, I just have to take lessons from all I've gone through this year and focus on my marriage."

Deanna Duggar, Amy's mother and Jim Bob's only sister, and Terry Jordan, Amy's father, split on December 20th, after nine years of marriage. Amy says her dad broke the news to her through a text message on Christmas, and while she is "devastated," she says her parents have had an "on/off relationship for a long time."

The newlywed Duggar cousin told ET that she is leaning on her husband, Dillon King, during this difficult time. We know she and her family would appreciate your prayers.

Jed & Jer Turn 17

Wish Jedidiah Duggar and Jeremiah Duggar a blessed 17th birthday! Zach Bates, the oldest of Gil and Kelly Bates' 19 children, is also celebrating a birthday today and is exactly 10 years older than Jed and Jer.

'Counting On' Part 3 Recap

Last night on Jill & Jessa: Counting On, "Counting One More"..
  • A few weeks before Spurgeon’s birth, Jessa and Ben have a family over for dinner to discuss adoption. The Seewalds will need to wait until their baby is nine months old to adopt, but they plan to start attending classes in the new year.
  • Ben reveals that he dreams of having 15 sons, and Jessa says she would enjoy that.
  • Down in Central America, Jill and Derick bring supplies and toys to Mama Carmen’s children’s home, run by a sweet elderly woman who has been taking care of little ones for 30 years.
  • Some of you may be familiar with Mama Carmen’s cafĂ© and roastery in Northwest Arkansas, both of which help fund the children’s home. Jill and Derick say they are considering adoption, and they clear up fans' speculations by announcing that they are not expecting.
  • On another day, Jill volunteers at a local birth center. Meanwhile, Derick and his mom, who is visiting, navigate the local market in search of rain boots.
  • “Shopping with an infant is a lot different than shopping by yourself,” comments Derick.
  • Everyone—including Israel--tears up when Derick’s mom has to leave Central America to return home.
  • Four days before Jessa’s due date, a family friend and her husband come by to snap maternity photos.
  • Anna, Meredith, Jana, and Joy visit Jessa to help her make freezer meals. “There were a lot of sweet memories running through my mind,” shares Anna, who lived in Jessa and Ben’s house for the first five years of her marriage.
  • “I think for everyone, it’s been hard,” says Anna, when asked how she is doing. “But I think that it’s been a good opportunity to draw close to God.”
  • “Anna really is doing very well with everything that has gone on,” says Jana.
  • Jill video chats her pregnant sister, but Jessa has to stop talking for a few moments when she is hit with a painful contraction.
  • “It’s been quite an adjustment having Jill and Derick gone,” says Jessa. The Dillards are blessed to have Wi-Fi in their apartment while they are in language school in Guatemala, but once they begin their first mission assignment, communicating with family will become more difficult.
  • The Duggar boys take Ben out for pizza to celebrate his upcoming entry into fatherhood.
  • Three days after her due date, Jessa starts having intense contractions. She uses an app on her iPhone to log them.
  • To jumpstart labor, Jana and Jinger accompany Jessa and Ben on an hour-long powerwalk. “That ought to help,” says the pregnant mama. “The walk was very beneficial.”
  • Jessa’s birthing team arrives, and labor begins. During the long birth, Jill encourages her sister via FaceTime.
  • “Ben was just solid,” says Michelle. “He was there, and he stuck by [Jessa’s] side. It was just really sweet.”
  • When the baby arrives, Jordyn is the first of those waiting eagerly at the Duggars' home to find out the gender, since she was Jessa’s buddy. It’s a boy!
  • After Spurgeon’s birth, Jessa begins bleeding excessively and has everyone worried. Michelle calls 9-1-1, and an ambulance arrives. Jessa spends the night at a hospital, where she is given a blood transfusion.
  • Jana, who has assisted many births as a doula, says this is the worst bleeding she has witnessed.
  • When Jessa returns home, the Duggars come over to hold Baby Seewald. Jinger comments that it is odd to be passing around a nameless child. The proud parents spend a few days deciding on a name, but they end up choosing Spurgeon Elliot Seewald.
  • “I can’t believe it,” says Jessa. “I can’t believe he’s ours. It seems like a dream.”
  • “Children are such a blessing,” shares Anna, after meeting Spurgeon for the first time. The mother of four says God knew exactly what he was doing when he gave the Duggars another precious addition to help them through this difficult season.

Merry Christmas!

Jill Dillard, Derick Dillard, and Israel Dillard

Jill and Derick Dillard are gearing up to celebrate Israel's first Christmas and their first Christmas as missionaries in Central America. Michelle Duggar sent a banner to her daughter and son-in-law that reads "Alegria Para El Mundo" ("Joy to the World").

In their December ministry update, Jill and Derick report that they have had many chances to share the Gospel while temporarily living in Guatemala for language school. They also enjoyed eating Thanksgiving dinner with other Americans.

Wishing you and your family a blessed Christmas!

'Counting On' Part 2 Recap

Tonight on Jill & Jessa: Counting On, "Baby Shower and a New Home"...
  • For the first time in months, Anna Duggar, who is currently staying in the girls’ room at Jim Bob and Michelle Duggars’ house, is speaking out. “Things have shifted, but the girls’ room is still very full at the Duggar home,” says the mother of four, smiling.
  • When the news about Josh’s teenage mistakes came out, Anna says it was “like ripping open an old wound” but that none of the information was new to her. Josh had confessed everything to Anna and her parents before he proposed back in 2008.
  • Then, when the news about Josh’s unfaithfulness broke, Anna admits she was speechless and that she did a lot of crying.
  • “I didn’t know what to say,” shares Anna. “It just felt like a bad dream. It didn’t seem possible. It was hard to realize that it was such a public thing, so not only was it a betrayal against me, but it was also a betrayal against those who call themselves Christian.”
  • Soon after confessing to being unfaithful to his wife and being addicted to pornography, Josh admitted himself into a long-term Christian recovery program.
  • When asked if she will stick with Josh, Anna says that, although she respects the opinions of those who think she should leave Josh, she is staying true to her marriage vows.
  • “God has unfailing love for me, and he has loved me and forgiven me of so much, and I pray that through all of this that I would be an extension of God’s love to Joshua,” shares Anna, who prays that God will give her patience and that he will restore her marriage.
  • The mom of four desires for her family to turn their hearts to God, find the grace and help they need, and come out stronger.
  • Anna, Jana, Jill, Jinger, Joy, Meredith, and Israel head over to Sierra’s house to plan Jessa’s baby shower. Sierra, due with her fifth child just a few weeks after Jessa, is a long-time family-friend who helped plan Jill and Jessa’s weddings.
  • Anna admits that seeing Jessa and Ben prepare for Spurgeon’s arrival makes her miss Josh all the more, but she is enjoying time with family and is genuinely happy for the Seewalds.
  • “Through all the ups and downs, I am really glad to be back in Arkansas with the family,” says Anna, with a big smile on her face. There’s definitely a wide range of emotions, but overall, it’s been wonderful to just be excited for Jessa and Ben, and I can’t wait to be an aunt again,” says Anna, with a big smile on her face.
  • The shower ends up being a huge event, with around 100 guests. The mamas take part in a baby diapering contest, which Jessa wins. Then, the guys compete to see who can make the most delicious baby food, using items that they picked out themselves.
  • “Most of the baby food that was made, I would not feed to a baby,” admits Jana. “I wouldn’t even eat it myself.”
  • One brave man judges the baby food concoctions based on taste, and he chooses Ben’s, which is made only of fruit. The others are much more creative—with ingredients such as chips, baked beans, and ice cream—but a lot less tasty.
  • Before the end of the party, the guests gather around Jessa and Ben to pray for Spurgeon's delivery.
  • The family exchanges lots of teary hugs as they drop Jill, Derick, and Israel off at the airport. Derick’s mom, Cathy, is flying to Central America with the Dillards to help them adjust. After a month in language school, Jill and Derick will begin an eight-month mission assignment.
  • The house that the Dillards are living in while attending school is much nicer than they expected, but their living accommodations for the next eight months will be a lot more basic.
  • Jessa and Ben head to Birmingham to answer audience questions at the Southern Women’s Show. The Seewalds say they will not be having 19 biological kids but that they have a heart for adoption. After seeking counsel, they were told to wait until Spurgeon is nine months old to pursue adoption.

Recap: 'Counting On' Part 1

Jill & Jessa: Counting On "A New Chapter"...
  • As the show opens, the producer asks the following question: “How would you describe the last four months of your life?”
  • Jill: it has been “different than what I had expected.”
  • Jessa: “We have endured a lot. It’s been really difficult.”
  • Derick agrees that it has been very emotional, and Ben says the journey has been tough but that it has helped strengthen his marriage.
  • Jana: It has been “really difficult.” Joy: “We’re getting through it.”
  • Josiah: “I was not sure how it would influence our daily lives.” He says that some people were standoffish but that most shared encouraging words.
  • One month after Israel was born, Derick had his palette surgically expanded. Two months later, Jill and Derick headed down to Central America for the entire month of July. “We’re not naive to the risk we’re taking [in] taking our infant son down there, but we do want to be true to our calling,” says Derick.
  • The Dillards returned to Arkansas later in the summer to take care of a few things.
  • At 35 weeks, Jessa says her pregnancy has been “pretty typical.” As most fans know, the Seewalds kept the gender of their baby a secret until the birth.
  • “It was really, really frustrating,” says Jessa, of the release of the records that revealed to the world that Josh had inappropriately touched five girls, including four of his sisters, as a young teenager.
  • “For this to be released…was really, really hard,” agrees Jill.
  • Jill and Jessa say that they had already chosen to forgive their brother long ago. It had taken time for the Duggars to rebuilt their trust in Josh, but Jessa says that their relationships with him had eventually been restored.
  • A judge ended up ordering for the records to be destroyed, ruling that they should never have been released, but the girls say the ordeal has still caused their family great pain.
  • Jana says it has been encouraging to see how the release of the police report has prompted others who have endured similar trials come alongside them.
  • A few months after those records were released, Josh’s name was linked to a site for people seeking extramarital affairs, and he confessed to having a pornography addiction and being unfaithful to his wife, Anna Duggar.
  • The entire Duggar family was shocked, as was the world. “As we as a family looked into this situation, you have to wonder, ‘How did this happen?’” shares Jessa.
  •  Jill and Jessa had publicly defended Josh during their interview with Megyn Kelly in June, without knowing about the secrets he had still been harboring.
  •  “I feel like, it wasn’t right for him to let us speak our words without having the full knowledge of what he was hiding,” says Jill. “We just have to understand that nobody is strong enough. That’s why it is so important to set boundaries…and be accountable and just really focus on your relationship with the Lord, and don’t be a hypocrite. You have to be real.”
  • When the news broke, Jana, Jinger, and Michelle were at a conference. Jim Bob immediately called Michelle to tell her about Josh’s confession.
  • “[My mom] sat us down there in the room to share that our brother had been living a double life and that he wasn’t who he appeared to be,” says Jana. Michelle proceeded to tell the girls about the news reports.
  • "When my mom told us about this, we were just so overwhelmed and so grieved about what had happened," shares Jinger. "And it almost seems like, this person that we knew is no longer the same person. So we just stopped and prayed and asked God to help us get through it."
  • “[Josh] was one of my role models, and I did look up to him,” explains Joy-Anna. “And it was just really hard to see that he had been making bad choices.”
  • While the Duggars have chosen once again to forgive Josh, Jana says they still have difficult days.
  •  John-David shares that he now has “a big weight” upon him to be a man that his younger siblings can look up to. “One of the toughest things I ever had to tell my older brother was, ‘I don’t want to be like you anymore,’” John shares.
  • Jessa and Jinger head out to purchase a used rocker for Baby Seewald and end up finding one that is in near perfect condition. “Jessa and I have always been super close, so now just seeing her pregnant, it’s so strange,” says Jinger, smiling.
  • Jill and Derick drop by Jessa and Ben’s house so Jill, who recently became a certified professional midwife, can check Baby Seewald’s heart rate. “Growing up, Jill always liked to pretend to be a nurse,” says Jessa. “She’s always had that in her.”
  • “It’s really cool being a dad because it’s just like a regular person, but in small form,” Derick tells Ben, while giving him fatherhood advice.
  • Jana, Jill, Jinger, and Joy purchase children’s clothing for the Dillards to take to an orphanage in Central America. The girls enjoy spending time together as sisters before Jill leaves for an extended period of time.
  • Jessa’s sisters come over for an unannounced visit, and Jana tries to read the ultrasounds to figure out Baby Seewald’s gender. The girls give the Seewalds a bag of gender neutral clothing, which includes an adorable football outfit.
  • The Duggars host a going away party for Jill, Derick, and Israel, to which they invite everyone who has supported their ministry, either financially or through prayer.
  • “We are really excited to start the next chapter of our life in Central America,” says Derick.
  • A few of the Duggars share closing comments:
  • Joy-Anna: “I think that there is hope for our family. I think there is going to be a new normal.”
  • Jinger: “It’s amazing how everyone has come closer to each other through this, and I…am just so grateful.”
  • Josiah: “I think we’ll just have to stay together as a family.”
  • Jill: “There are exciting things, and I’m sure more challenges, down the road, but right now, we are just taking it one step at a time.”

Jinger: 'We just stopped and prayed'

We have one more promo video to share before the premiere of Jill & Jessa: Counting On, a three-part special that airs tonight at 8pm ET/7pm CT on TLC. In this video (shown below) 21-year-old Jinger Duggar explains how her family reacted when they found out what Josh had done.

"When my mom told us about this, we were just so overwhelmed and so grieved about what had happened," shares Jinger. "And it almost seems like, this person that we knew is no longer the same person. So we just stopped and prayed and asked God to help us get through it."

As we mentioned before, we know the Duggars would appreciate continued prayer for their family.

"It was like, I'm going to wake up, and everything is going to be okay, and this really, this can't be true," reveals Anna Duggar.

"I don't think there's any way any of us would have known that my brother was living such a secret life," shares Joseph Duggar.

Duggar #19 Turns 6

Josie Duggar is a fighter! Despite being born at 25 weeks gestation with less than two pounds to her name, she is now a healthy little girl.

Happy 6th birthday, Josie! Your story has illustrated the power of God to millions of people across the globe, and we pray that you will continue to use your life to glorify the Lord.

Josie Duggar: Miracle Child

"You're fixing to have a little sister here in a few minutes," Jim Bob Duggar told his children during a brief phone call on December 10th, 2009. His voice was shaking as he prepared to join his wife in the operating room at UAMS Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. "Just tell everybody to pray, okay?"

Six years ago, the Duggars' lives were turned upside down when a potentially life-threatening complication known as preeclampsia forced Michelle to deliver Baby #19 at 25 weeks gestation. Josie Brooklyn Duggar was born via emergency C-section, weighing a mere 1 lb 6 oz.

"...We praise God when all the good things are happening, and we're going to praise God, even through this difficult situation, " Jim Bob told TLC.

The months that followed Josie's premature birth were full of ups and downs. She remained in the hospital until early April 2010, when she was released for just a couple days before being rushed back. After solving her digestive problems, doctors sent Josie home permanently in June.

Today, Josie Duggar is a healthy, lively little girl who is fixing to turn six years old tomorrow. In honor of her birthday, take a look at this video filmed in January 2010.

Do you remember hearing about Josie's premature birth back in 2009?

Duggars Featured in New Film on Adoption

Is it possible to carry out an adoption in less than one week? For Todd and Barbara McCoskey, stars of the new documentary The 5 Day Adoption, the answer is yes. Five days after prayerfully beginning the adoption process, the McCoskeys welcomed their newborn daughter Christina into their family.

A network of Christians around the country, including Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, came alongside Todd and Barbara to make this adoption possible. When the McCoskeys were approached by cinematographer Kevin Peeples about creating a documentary to tell their adoption story, the Duggars agreed to be a part of the film.

The 5 Day Adoption: The Incredible True Story About the Power of Prayer and Courageous Faith in God in a Family's Adoption Process that Took Only 5 Days is now available for rent or purchase through Vimeo On Demand.

The film is set to be released on Blu-Ray December 14th and DVD December 21st. Visit www.5dayadoption.com to pre-order your copy.

Spurgeon or Quincy?

A number of readers have asked what the Duggars and Seewalds call Jessa and Ben Seewald's almost-four-week-old son, whose given name is Spurgeon Elliot Seewald.

Proud Mama Jessa shared with us that Baby Seewald most often goes by Spurgeon, although some people still call him Quincy, a nickname that the expectant parents came up with before finding out the gender of their child.

Carol Like a Duggar

A few days after celebrating Thanksgiving, the Duggars kicked off the Christmas season by going caroling, one of their favorite holiday traditions. Check out these video clips of the super-sized family rehearsing with friends. (The lyrics to the first and third songs are pasted below.)

The song sung in the first video clip is a less familiar Christmas tune called "There's a Song in the Air," the words of which were written by American poet and novelist Josiah Gilbert Holland in the 19th century.

The second video clip features a snippet of "Sing We Now of Christmas," the English translation of a traditional French carol written in the 15th century.

In the third video clip, Jinger Duggar, who turns 22 this month, demonstrates her incredible piano skills by accompanying the singers on "O Holy Night," also a traditional French carol.

"Sing We Now of Christmas"
Sing we now of Christmas,
Noel sing we here.
Sing our grateful praises
To the maid so dear.

Chorus:
Sing we Noel!
The King is born, Noel!
Sing we now of Christmas.
Sing we here, Noel!

From the Eastern kingdoms
Come the wise men far.
Bearing ancient treasure,
Following yonder star.

Chorus
From the distant mountains,
Hear the trumpet sound.
With angelic blessings
On the silent town.

Chorus
Come let us surround Him
On this magic night.
Gather here around Him,
Wondrous Babe of light.

Chorus

"There's a Song in the Air"
1. There's a song in the air!
There's a star in the sky!
There's a mother's deep prayer
and a baby's low cry!
And the star rains its fire
while the beautiful sing,
for the manger of Bethlehem
cradles a King!

2. There's a tumult of joy
o'er the wonderful birth,
for the virgin's sweet boy
is the Lord of the earth.
Ay! the star rains its fire
while the beautiful sing,
for the manger of Bethlehem
cradles a King!

3. In the light of that star
lie the ages impearled;
and that song from afar
has swept over the world.
Every hearth is aflame,
and the beautiful sing
in the homes of the nations
that Jesus is King!

4. We rejoice in the light,
 and we echo the song
that comes down through the night
from the heavenly throng.
Ay! we shout to the lovely
evangel they bring,
and we greet in his cradle
our Savior and King!
