Earlier today, we shared what the Forsyths have been up to, but they aren't the only members of the Duggar clan who are currently working on a massive project (or, rather, a Duggar-sized project). The Duggars love working with their hands and using the talents and abilities that God has given them.
Jana Duggar and some of her brothers are tackling an old, rundown schoolhouse, with the goal of restoring it. We will keep you updated as they share updates.

Fun!!!
ReplyDeleteHow nice that God gave them the talents. The rest of us have to study trades somewhere and get licenses in order to do this kind of work.
ReplyDeleteThat's not true. If you own the building, you can do what you want with it. If you were going to then sell it, it would have to pass inspection. But implying that there's one standard for "the rest of us" and one for the Duggars is petty and inaccurate.
DeleteDon't worry, God gave you talents too.
Deletelol
DeleteThey would need to get a licence too if they were renovating other peoples houses and paying tax in order to earm, bit they are doing up their own homes and they have learned a lot from professional tradesmen, the house they work on still get checked by inspectors before they are given the ok to sell, they are not doing anything illegally.
Delete@7:33 Not true. Building codes apply to all buildings, no matter who owns them. A renovation that size requires a building permit, which requires inspections.
DeleteI am sure it depends on the jurisdictions. Here, people have to get building permits for major renovations. These permits require plans to be submitted, inspections....
DeleteYou sound cold and sad. Hopefully things will brighten up for you.
DeleteSo why won't the Duggars get contractor licenses of any kind? If they've become such experts in these trades, then passing the license exams should be a snap. This is like driving a car but insisting that you don't need to get a license, because you simply "know" how to drive.
DeleteWhere I live, you have to have a permit for any type of home remodel/renovation, or structural repair (and a licensed person for any trade work-plumbing, electrical, HVAC, etc.).
DeleteHater
Delete7:32 Are you a Christian? If so, just a gentle reminer that God doesn't need your assistance in judging others.
Deleteplease keep us updated on this project! I am excited to see what they are doing with it!! How fun!! She is creative and brilliant!!
DeleteSounds interesting. When it's done all the Grand-Duggars can go to school there.
ReplyDeleteIt is most likely going to be a home, I have seen some gorgeous homes that used to be schools, with the super tall windows and a nice open floor plan makes beautiful homes
DeleteThat's a good idea having all the Grandkids attend school there when they are old enough. It could be like what the Amish have where their children attend a large one room school house. I would have loved having a school like that when I was growing up. I would like to have something like that for my own children.
DeleteWe hear about how handy all the Duggars are when it comes to construction, flipping houses and remodeling. Are any of them professionally licensed in the the building trades, architecture, or as a plumber or electrician?
ReplyDeleteYou only need to be professionally licenced if you are getting payed or paying tax as an employer, you are allowed to refurnish your own house as long as the finalised work is inspected,my brother also refurnished the house he bought for his family to live in because he did'nt have enough money left over to hire professionals, besides the Duggar children learned the trade from experts, remember it was mentioned on the show when they were building the house they are currently living in.
DeleteSo sick of all of you Big Government types trying to demand licensing for every little thing. Any house they sell will have to be inspected and common sense should tell you that they are following all laws. It would be stupid to think they were purposely ignoring the laws when remodeling.
DeleteNot true everywhere 5:13. We're only allowed to do so much to our homes here before we have to use licensed workers with proper permits and inspections. There are guidelines based on cost or size of renovation and the building codes. We ran into this when we tore down and rebuilt a shed. Had we wanted to have the new one electrified, we would have had to hire a contractor. Had we built the new one much larger, ditto. As it was, we needed to submit a detailed application before we could begin reconstruction on even a small shed. I can understand that. They don't want just anyone building anything anywhere.
DeleteLicenses are there for very good reasons, 9:56. Before they were required, people were getting ripped off and injured by shoddy workmanship, and they had little recourse. At least a licensing board holds all contractors responsible to a tested standard. It has nothing to do with Big Government. I can't imagine anyone wants to see a country full of structures built, wired, or plumbed haphazardly by people who don't know what they're doing.
DeleteThe Duggars didn't build the house they currently live in. If you actually watched the show, Jim Bob and the kids were trying to do the work themselves, under their licensed contractor friend (with help from his licensed subs). They weren't getting it done that way, so they ended up calling in a professional contractor with his whole crew. You can find easily the TLC episodes on Youtube.
Delete9:56- I would hardly call building and remodeling homes a “ little thing.” I think common sense is being licensed and bonded for the protection of both the contractor and customer. Not everyone can be trusted to do the right things.
DeleteI agree 9:56 people like the O.P are why there is so much big Gov trying to control the sheeple
DeleteAmen! Preach that freedom @ Aug 25 9:56.
Deleteanon@9:56- One of the roles of government is to protect its citizenry. Requiring licensing in the building trades, or in any other area of business, is a way to ensure that consumers have a reasonable amount of trust in the professionals they hire to work for them and are not taken advantage of by unscrupulous characters. Not everyone follows the laws, contrary to what you may think, and some people find out too late that their dazzling-on-the-surface flipped property is hiding quite a few structural problems. It is simply common sense to hire licensed contractors, make sure proper building permits have been issued, and make sure all the work is thoroughly check over by a LICENSED inspector. If the Duggars are properly licensed, no problem.
DeleteUH YES they DID build their massive 9 bedroom home that they currently live in! They in fact did show them constructing the steel framework, laying all the tile work and installing alllll the bathrooms, fixtures, woodwork, etc.!!!!! Don't know where you get your wrong info from but please stop lying about the family and trying to degrade what they do!
DeleteI live in New York, which is one of the most regulated states in the country. Even we aren't required to use licensed professionals for remodeling. We do need to file a permit, and have it inspected afterwards, but anyone can do the remodeling work...
DeleteThat's great! I hope we get updated when it's done. Would love to find out what they do with it. Sell it, use it for their Church or family...
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the finished project photos!! They are so talented :)
ReplyDeleteTypical Jana project. She has the idea, her brothers do the grunt work.
ReplyDeleteMan, that's mean AND inaccurate. Jana didn't get the skills she has by watching. She's in there working alongside them.
DeleteSeriously!!! How DARE she not risk her own physical well-being in order to complete manual labor projects that are physiologically beyond her capabilities?!?! The nerve!!!!
DeleteNo, Jana does a lot of the work too!
DeleteJana is not afraid to do dirty work. We've seen her many times over the years, working with her hands.
Delete10:06 - That’s typical of the building trade. Sometimes, an architect designs the homes and draws up blueprints. A contractor picks up the job; the contractor usually has a building crew who works for him/her. Most often the contractor is not trained in all skills, so a plumber, electrician has to be hired to do things according to specs. Where we live, we needed a crew to excavate and pour concrete for our basements and, if a person chooses brick, bricklayers for the house exterior. So, in essence, yes, there is the designer and the folks who do the “grunt” work, as you called it. But I would argue that it is not just “grunt” work! All such workers are creative and skilled in their own right. Its like the body - each separate part is integral to the whole. The beauty of the whole depends on the beauty of each part. And no one part is more important than the other.
DeleteYou are being hateful. You have no idea how much she does and even if she doesn't do as much of the of physical labor, that's no big deal. Have you never seen a show on HGTV? The designer is never the one to do the physical labor but according to you their contribution should be insulted and devalued. Shame on you.
Delete@10:06 I sense an attitude or tone of anger in your comment? If her project is refurbishing an entire building then help would be required, yes, even a man would need additional workers to complete the project in a reasonable amount of time, lift heavy materials. I’m not sure what you were trying to say with your comment, if we have missed your intent please tell us so we understand.
DeleteWho'da thunk it.. A woman, who was made with a superior ability to think creatively, can see more colors and can multitask is playing the role of designer and foremen.. Then using men, who have far more muscle density, stamina and the ability to task focus are doing the manual tasks... Almost like that kind of efficiency and work ballance was Designed maybe..
DeleteWhat is the ability to "task focus"?
DeleteRestoring to back to being used as a school house or for another purpose?
ReplyDeletei hope we'll be able to see more of this in the new season
ReplyDeleteCool. A place where all the Duggar kids can be schooled. I hope they get it done soon.
ReplyDeleteHaving to travel elsewhere to homeschool your children is timewasting, imagine all the chores that will be missed on while driving, their house is big enough to homeschool their children and even grandchildren, its just another old schoolhouse that gets converted to living accomodation, the Duggars are always doing up houses for profit it's a great investment and they have homes ready to move into when they marry.
DeleteThis sounds exciting, can we see before and after pictures.Bless Jana and her brothers.
ReplyDeleteJana sure wants to be like her idol Joanna Gaines, doesn't she? Except Joanna is focusing on her community too, not just herself and her own family. When will the Duggars fix up some low-income houses or elderly housing and use those God-given talents to help others?
ReplyDeleteWoah, sounds like you have some deep-seated bitterness towards Jana. SMH
DeleteThey don't broadcast most of the details of their lives. If they are doing good works for others and not telling us about that, good for them.
DeleteChip and Joanna Gaines business was started as a house flipping business to earn money to support their family....they did well and can now share their gifts with others....they didn’t start off that way. Never a good idea to compare people to others we all develop at our own pace. Jana and her family do many charity events.
Deletewhy dont you and jana get together and do that then
DeleteWell they helped they helped their friends the Bates build an extension on their house and I'm sure other needy people too, they kust did'nt film it because they don't want to boast and maybe those other people did'nt want to be filmed as they were camera shy,I'm sure if they are busy with their projects and they are needed by someone they could spare one or two their talented children.
DeleteGood idea! Don’t the Bates do mission building.
DeleteWow, the haters will find anything to pick on or make any unfounded accusation. I bet this young lady does more than most her age to help others. However, to compare her to success business people much older than her is ridiculous.
DeleteWhat a noble idea, I'm guessing by your statement your already giving a large portion of your time and finances to a charitable cause. Or more liekely you, like most, are simply a hypocrite that's more than willing to "sacrifice" at someone else's expense. Keep your hands in your own pockets and worry about your own philanthropy.
DeleteI think the intent was to see some of the other work they do. Not just all babies, showed and picking out dresses. Yes, that’s fun and huge step in growing up, but that’s all TLC shows of them. Show some substance!
DeleteI don't think mission building is all it's purported to be. Why travel thousands of miles when just as much need probably exists in your own community? Why select certain people for help but turn a blind eye to the needs of others?
DeleteO.P.. most low income housing turn into ghettos because people don't take care of them. I know many who build beautiful homes and they don't care for them and they become rat infested. That is a waste
DeleteI'm sure the Gaines family is very kind and nice but remember that a lot of charity work is done to help lower taxes. It is very possible that the Duggars do charity work but they don't need to lower their taxes when they can spread their income amongst so many thus they do not need to publicize it. Being a good kind person is not incompatible with being a smart business person with financial success.
Delete@7:36 That's not entirely true. Either a city builds the affordable houses or Habitat For Humanity does, with the city's involvement and vice versa. Price is based on your ability to pay. Habitat requires that you put sweat equity into your home as it's being built. Both the cities and Habitat screen potential residents. When a sense of pride and ownership comes with living in provided housing, those conditions you describe don't happen. If you're seeing them, then your city has dropped the ball and let it get like that. My city has torn down what used to be called "projects" and replaced them with affordable single-family residences. The crime in those areas disappeared once the new owners moved in. It's a far better use of land than cramming people into projects. I've not seen conditions deteriorate or rats take over. BTW (Mr. Texas), my family and I are Habitat volunteers.
Delete10:44 - If you're doing charity work to lower your taxes, fine. It's still charity work, and someone benefits from it.
DeleteThe problem with these slums is not with the residents but with the landlords, who will not pay for the normal upkeep of their properties. @10:06 Good sentiment but where did the displaced residents of the Projects find to live. 'Affordable' is relative. There are those for which these 'single-family' homes are too expensive. How about people on disability, singles....
DeleteOne answer to your question 10:32. New affordable housing is usually ready before old projects are emptied. They do that by not renewing leases, til everyone is in a new place and there's nobody left at the old one. Then they can renovate that property and eventually move people in from somewhere else. And so on. They don't come with a bulldozer one morning and put residents on the street.
DeleteThere are different types of low-income housing based on need or ability to pay, with some specifically for elderly and disabled. The single family homes are kept affordable by making the payment a capped percentage of your income, just like a mortgage company would look at your income and calculate what percent you could pay before they'd give you a mortgage.
Love it! All of the Duggars are so creative. Im looking forward to more pictures.
ReplyDeleteHi Elly, do you know what they want to use the building for once it is restored? Suzanne from Holland.
ReplyDeleteGood for them! I wonder what the building will now be used for!
ReplyDeleteThe Grand-Duggars can go to school there.
DeleteThe Duggars believe in homeschooling
Delete11 am
DeleteSo? I homeschool and we have a big community that meets in a church building once a week for class. Very effective for teaching. This program spits out kids with GPAs higher than public school kids. The program is awesome so long as parents take the time to teach and use it
It would be interesting to know their restoration plans. I assume they want to resell it as a residential home. I stayed in an 19th century restored school house in New England where the owners had taken great pains to preserve much of the original structure and many of the interior features. It was on the National Register of Historic Places, so there were restrictions on what they could do to make it into a vacation rental. One particular charming detail was that they left the original blackboards on the walls.
ReplyDeletethat sounds so pretty!
DeleteAre the Duggars starting a church like the Bates? Or maybe a private Christian school? Or just selling it for money. Jessa’s husband wanted to be a youth pastor. Don’t know what he is doing now.
ReplyDeleteAre you talking about Ben? Last I heard he was trying his hand at coaching football and helping Michelle home school the younger kids.
DeleteThat’s a job for a man with three children and a sahm wife?
DeleteIs it going to be a church like the Bates? Can you give an update on the Bates church? A tour. They were going to fix it up, but we never got to see it finished.
ReplyDeleteWhy is this OK but getting a job is forbidden?
ReplyDeletethis is a job. a really good one.
DeleteIs this a thing for them? Josh worked for that group in DC so not sure why you are saying jobs are forbidden?
DeleteIt isn’t forbidden. And in what way is working with your mind and hands not a “job?” What you mean is, her work is only validated when she accepts monetary income for it. Ridiculous.
DeleteI think that depends on what they paid for the place and cost of renovations.
DeleteOk, why is this job the only type Jana can take on?
Not sure why you think that. They seem to enjoy being self-employed.
DeleteI think the question is why can't any of the kids work OUTSIDE of the family, especially the unmarried ones, and especially the women. Don't the Duggars trust the rest of the world? Do they feel they're above doing the jobs that everyone else has?
DeleteDid the original poster mean “women” don’t usually hold jobs? I am thrilled to see Jana taking on her own projects and expanding her interests. It’s great to see that she has self worth and talents beyond that of being a wife and mother. She will most likely marry in her life, it’s good to see she is not just sitting and waiting 😀
DeleteI think it's nice that the family can all work together and make a living off of something they enjoy doing and is also profitable. So many families are estranged from one another through disagreements or through living so far away from each other. It's nice when a family stays close like this and not only live near each other, but work with each other. This is the meat of life, loving God and being with and living each other. It's something to be respected not picked apart.
DeleteHow do you know that they enjoy it? How do you know it's profitable? How do you know they are making a living doing this?
DeleteGood luck with school house.
ReplyDeleteJoan,Marion and Marilyn
Maybe we’re seeing the beginning of a Duggar grandkid school! I’ve actually been wondering if they would group-teach all the grandkids instead of each mom teaching just her kids K-12. Maybe one of the moms could teach Kindergarten, one could teach first grade, etc.? Or K-2, 3-5, etc? It may be more efficient if they each specialize at a certain level. So, I’m crossing my fingers it’s the Duggar school!
ReplyDeleteThat would hardly be effective as grades are extremely different from one another. A third grader is not learning the same subject material as a fifth grader. Plus the Duggar sisters might have differing opinions on what curriculum to use. I don’t ever see them doing something like that.
DeleteThat would be fun!
Deletei cant imagine a duggar school since it would be a separate building and they prefer home to be school, however, what a cool 'one room schoolhouse' it would make if all the moms could meet on the daily! michelle should definitely be the principal with all her experience and anna and jill have done wonderful with their kids. hard to believe justin will be the next to graduate and michelle only has 5 of her own, and tyler left to school. how mind blowing is it that michelle's last to graduate will do so with josh & anna's first
DeleteHomeschooling is not rocket science. There are more online resources available than ever before. Even many public school districts have avenues for families to homeschool that help them follow state standards. When my daughter was ill in high school and couldn't attend classes, she finished half of her sophomore year this way- all with her laptop in the comfort of our home at no cost to us.
DeleteAnonymous 11:09,
DeleteThere are actually many successful mixed age/grade schools out there. My daughter attended a public one in OR from 1st-5th grades. There are a lot of benefits to mixed age education, among them a focus on cooperative learning, as opposed to competitive learning. There’s a lottery to get into this school, and there is always a long waiting list.
I don’t imagine that this schoolhouse will be turned into a school for the young Duggars, but mixed grade classrooms can be quite successful.
And for the record, my daughter has a masters degree now, so her education did not suffer for it’s lack of age segregation.
My son knows 5th grade material through memorization from an acts and facts timeline. He may not understand what it all means but it piques curiousity in wanting to know more.
Delete11:09- How do you think the teachers of one-room schools managed back in the day? They were responsibile for teaching up to 8 grades, all by themselves! When I started out as a special education teacher back in the 1970's, I had a self-contained classroom with 20 students in grades K-5 and those kids were all working at different levels and had varying disabilities. I only had one instructional assistant to help me.
DeleteHomeschooling is not rocket science. Which is why you have to go to college to study rocket science. I know a brain surgeon whose hobby is model rockets. We can never decide if what he's doing is brain surgery or rocket science. "It's not brain surgery." "It's not rocket science." In his case, it's both! :)
Delete11:31 "Back in the day" students sometimes got a very poor education, due to the factors you mentioned. I imagine special ed students fared especially badly. Just because something was done "back in the day" doesn't mean it was good. Often (in the case of the pioneers) there were one room schoolhouses out of necessity, not desire.
Deletethats a good thing.
ReplyDeleteWay to go Jana!
ReplyDeleteIt won't be long till there are enough grandkids to fill up their own school house!
ReplyDeleteSo Jana is putting her brothers to work. That's good. Keep them busy Jana!!
ReplyDeleteFYI- The City of Tonitown doesn't require construction to be done by a licensed contractor unless it is larger than a two-family dwelling or it is a commercial building (City Ordinance 1994-08-101). The State of Arkansas does require a Contractor's license if the construction is other than a single family dwelling, unless you are the owner of your own commercial company and acting as your own contractor. However, a home owner does not have to have a license to do his or her own "home improvement" work. However, any contractor you hire to work on the project will need a license if the cost of the work, labor and material, is more than $2,000. Subcontractors working for an unlicensed contractor (such as a homeowner acting as his or her own contractor) need a license, if their portion of the project is more than $2,000, labor and material.
DeleteNone of the Duggars nor Austin have publicly stated they hold a Contractor's license. They have been clear who holds pilot licenses.
They will need to team up with Chip and Joann! 😀
ReplyDeleteThe Duggars are against schools so I don't think it will be used as a grandkid school.
ReplyDeleteDing ding ding!!! We have a winner for most ignorant comment!
DeleteWell, that's the opposite of what they said on the episode where they visited a public school.
DeleteIt would be a Duggar school. Good for them.
DeleteNo they aren’t. Eye roll
Delete@9:44 it’s ok to disagree but is it really necessary to call someone else’s comment ignorant?
DeleteThe Duggars strongly prefer homeschool. They like the 1 on 1 interaction between the child and the parent. They like that the child can learn at home, in the car, up in their room, etc. They like that the parents have complete control over the curriculum, and know everything the child is taught. This would not be possible in a "Duggar school" setup.
Deletewhy cant anyone just be happy for someone without bashing them or questioning their intentions. why do you assume they are always trying to get away with something or allowed to get away with something because of who they are??
ReplyDeleteif you've followed them long enough, you know they have friends licensed in the trades. not only did they help in building the 'big house', they also brought them to the bates when they gifted kelly with the addition for mothers day. these tradesmen friends of theirs have taught them their skills and they seem to be putting it to good use. they have to pass the same inspections you do. the duggar name doesnt give them a pass. jason has been doing this for awhile too so obviously they enjoy working together on their refurbishing projects. please dont assume jana is 'putting them to work'. maybe she's just giving them an opportunity to put their talents to use because they want to!
I think we can all see this will be for Duggar homeschooling. So many cousins of the same age. It only makes sense they would school together, and I think it’s healthy for the kids to be able to “go to school” versus sitting at a dining room table.
ReplyDeleteMichelle has said several times that they have nothing against public schools and that they are in fact needed. Her preference is simply that she prefers to homeschool. The Duggers support public schools just like everybody else does-with their taxes.
ReplyDeleteIn many states homeschooling families get a tax credit since their children are not in public schools.
DeleteI homeschool and I don't pay those taxes
DeleteName some of those states. I'm not aware of any and would like to know where you get a tax credit for homeschooling.
Delete7:44 you pay them in property tax. That’s what your property tax goes for
Delete@8:37 14 states offer tax breaks of some sort to parents who homeschool or pay out of pocket for nonprofit private schooling. People who pay property tax and other state and local taxes in most states support public schools, if your family is not using that service some sort of credit seems fair.
Deletehttp://homeschoolcpa.com/tax-breaks-for-education-in-some-states/
That’s a website where you can read about it.
Not just property taxes, but city sales tax and real estate taxes. Our locality did away with a "car tax" and implemented a higher food tax because everyone buys food, but not everyone owns a car. To "foster development" of the University in my city, the City Council and Planning Commission generously negotiates to pay for the necessary infrastructure of new student housing projects (they need to house roughly 21,000 students) via the taxpayers. All of the pipework and plumbing shows up as a monthly surcharge for years on every water bill. Few, if any, localities, allow homeschooling families to opt out of paying for school buildings and maintenance, buses, and administration/teacher salaries. Most states do not give tax credits to homeschooling families.
Delete@8:30- I don’t think a tax credit is fair for homeschoolers. Funding public schools should be a collective affair, as it’s providing for the public good. There are other things our tax dollars fund that I don’t necessarily use, but provides services for those who need it. In the end, I am benefiting in the long run in some capacity. A well educated population ensures we have enough people paying into social security to keep it solvent. We all benefit.
DeleteAnonymous @ 8:58- your post presumses that home schoolers aren't well educated. One of the purpose for taxes is to pay for education. Homeschooling families have taken those costs on themselves-they don't ask or require others to pay for their child's teacher, textbooks, field trips, supplies, or transportation. If anything, they're saving their communities tax dollars and allowing others to use them instead. Yes, they should get a tax credit.
Delete8:58, excellent points. If we start giving tax breaks to home schooling families, then how about those who have no children or whose children are grown? If that were the case then there wouldn’t be enough money to fund any public school. What about those who don’t use the public library? It would get ridiculous trying to deduct taxes from each persons tax bill based on which services they personally use.
DeleteThat’s fabulous. Are they doing this for some organisation or have they purchased the building themselves & are now renovating it ? It’s great the whole family are so good with DIY. I shall look forward to seeing this project when fully finished.
ReplyDeleteIn my area, our city rehabbed an old school. It now houses a Boys & Girls Club, a work skills training program for the disabled, free community safety workshops hosted by the local police department, and offers a wide variety of classes for community members (some free- like Rosetta Stone foreign languages, some have fees- like specialty gardening classes, bread-making, pottery, exercise classes for all levels, computer classes, webpage design classes, etc.). It also hosts community forum events, promoting racial harmony in our city. They did an excellent job, preserving both the building and incorporating historical displays of it's history.
ReplyDeletePerhaps Jana will rehab it and donate it to become a women's shelter or a homeless shelter. It would be great to see Duggar charitable work in action!
DeleteMaybe she will turn it into her own garden shop. Imagine that a Duggar daughter owning and operating her own business.
Delete"Racial" harmony??
DeleteIt would be nice if Jana donated to their town to be used like that. Who knows what will be done with it when the project is completed? Since Jana doesn't have a job and lives at home this gives her something to do.
DeleteInstead of always trying to make a buck, it would be nice to see the Duggars do charitable work within their community.
DeleteAnonymous @7:44-Yep, racial harmony. I live in a southern town with a history of racial segregation. When the building boom in the 1960's came along, the all white city fathers (in their infinite wisdom- not) leveled largely the poor, black neighborhoods to expand and develop their "dream downtown". Our community is still dealing with the mistrust and the "us v. them" divide that that little maneuver created...and that dream downtown has become a money pit thanks to their further mismanagement.
DeleteIt's nice they enjoy working together.
ReplyDeleteYou are always in my prayers, Jana. God bless you.
ReplyDelete
