The Kendra Gown

As I mentioned yesterday, I was able to watch some of the events shown in last night's episode unfold in real time from behind the scenes. Filming started in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, at Renee's Bridal, where Kendra Caldwell, along with her mom (Christina Caldwell), grandmother (Grammy), sisters (Lauren and Gracie Caldwell), and future in-laws (Michelle Duggar, Jana Duggar, and Josie Duggar) had an appointment with dress designer Renee Miller.

Kendra has a cheerful, bubbly personality, and it was neat to watch her interact with her family (and future family). Josie and Gracie are around the same age, so they enjoyed playing together and "helping" Renee. (They helped Kendra fan out her train and put on her veil.) Jana has an eye for design and is gentle with her opinions, so she was able to give Kendra guidance. As the oldest daughters in their families, she and Kendra are both strong leaders.

Kendra's family was as sweet as could be. You could tell that her mom and "grammy" were soaking in each moment as they watched Kendra try on dresses. The Caldwells spoke well of Joseph and seemed thrilled to have him join their family.

Before the gowns were revealed and the fitting began, Renee and Kendra sat down to look at sketches of the dresses. Renee had purposefully had the artist--Ashley Howell, owner of The Blue Rose--do the sketches "paper doll style" so Kendra could visualize how the top would look with each skirt.

For more photos from the day, visit Renee's Facebook page.

  1. Renee's Bridal certainly offers a wonderful service. The bride experiences full pampering, very nice! Kendra was very gracious and appreciative, very polite and sweet

    1. Ya I would love Renee for my daughters. I have about 10 years to go though until they are marrying age. Renee seems so caring and usually is at the weddings to make sure the dress is perfect

    2. I agree! Kendra seems so gracious! Beautiful lady inside and out!

  2. They should have been doing the paper doll thing via e-mail before Kendra ever flew there. She could have picked the one she liked and had that one made. Who paid for the other three skirts she didn't take?

    1. good question. Enough already about this wedding, let's move onto Kendra's pregnancy and JOy's new baby as well as Josiah's courtship. It gets old having news we have already heard numerous times.

    2. I am sure Renee will just use them on another dress. Kendra could have looked at pictures to see what she liked, but she couldnt know for sure without trying them on.

    3. My guess? Tlc.

    4. TLC. Perhaps Renee was able to "repurpose" them by using them in other bridal gowns.

    5. I'm sure you could tell that those skirts weren't made for her as they were way too long. They were most likely floor samples

    6. Seriously? You don’t think they will be able to sell those other skirts? Bridal salons go out on a limb with every sample they purchase, this is no different.

    7. I wondered too what they were going to do with the unused skirts. Seemed kind of extravagant to have so many choices made and waiting. Hopefully there are 3 other girls out there wanting those "horse braid" skirts.

    8. The three skirts were not unusual. I have seen very similar ones when we were dress shopping last year for my daughter. The salon would have had samples already. If they made three new skirts, the other two would be used as samples.

    9. Using paper dolls (1) does NOT show exactly how the dress will look on an actual 3D person, and doesn't replicate the weight and texture of the fabric and embellishments. and (2) doesn't really make for good TV even if they did.

As for the skirts, I am sure Renee repurposed those skirts in some way. Either she sold them to other customers, or she used the material to make something else. Seriously doubt she just threw them in the trash.

    10. You can't make 4 skirts for every bride to choose from. You'd be chin deep in unwanted skirts eventually.

    11. The Duggars aren't just "any bride;" they're brides on a TV show, and that means a dress designer is happy to make them as many sample dresses and skirts as their precious hearts could ever desire.

  3. Ellie that's so sweet you got to be there to see Kendra choose her dress. I'm sure it was a special honor for you.

  4. I just love how you describe both Jana as a strong leader. I completely agree with your assessment (and I'd reckon you'd know, since you've met her!) Sometimes we forget that quiet and gentle can be strong and can lead in its own way.

And those sketches of the dresses are just gorgeous!

  5. I quite liked her wedding dress, it is very pretty. The dress suits Kendra's personality. Eileen

  6. I feel bad for her sisters because you know that dress cost thousands and she’s getting it for free because she’s on the show. But her sisters won’t get same...looking at dresses that are so nice.

    1. Goodness, so many assumptions.

    2. A dress doesn’t have to cost thousands to look nice, honestly I wasn’t a fan of Kendra’s dress, it seemed more like a prom dress. Of course, my opinion doesn’t matter since it wasn’t my wedding dress, and I’m glad she liked it.

      Delete
    3. Do we know she got it for free?

      Delete
    4. Her sisters could choose a Duggar husband, too. Better hurry! They're going fast.

      Delete
    5. If her sisters marry for the right reason, the cost of the dress won't matter to them.

      Delete
    6. Or maybe because she's getting a deal on this one her sisters will get to spend a little bit more on theirs when the time comes!

  7. Spectacular dress! Beautiful on Kendra!!

  8. I loved the artist rendition of the styles, and how she was able to mix and match to help visualize each look. Great job, Renee Miller and Ashley Howell! The dress turned out beautifully.

  9. My favorite gown of the Duggar brides was Jinger's. Kendra's was right up there, too. Thsoe two both seemed to best fit the bride's personalities the best of all of them.

  10. Not to my taste as it seems a bit too fussy. Kendra liked it which is all that really matters.

  16. Love the Duggar family! Can someone please tell me if Kendra is really Jeddiah’s exgirlfriend (not really girlfriend since they don’t do that kind of thing) but did they almost have a relationship? I know I shouldn’t believe everything I read in the tabloid magazine and I don’t but darn it, every since I saw that article saying Kendra and Jeddiah were in a relationship before Kendra and Joseph, I now look at Kendra and Joseph differently. Ugh. I want to like them but oh, I just can’t. Someone who follows this family closely please help. Lol.

    1. I really wouldn’t worry about it. There was also a tabloid saying a few moths before they got married that Joe and Kendra had announced that they were pregnant and naming the baby “Cain” or “Jezebel”.

      Delete
    2. I’m pretty sure the Duggars would have addressed that if it were true or a family “friend” would have confirmed it by now.

      Delete
    3. Hmmm... I don't know anything about that, but like you said, you can't believe those tabloid magazines. Some rumors get started just because of pictures that get shown on the internet, but in reality there is nothing to it. Joe and Kendra are so sweet together. They are a good couple. He is quiet and reserved, and she is bubbly and outgoing...a good balance:)

      Delete
    4. Even if Kendra and Jedidiah liked each other at one point, what does it matter? They never dated or courted, so it couldn’t have been serious.

      Delete
    5. That’s ridiculous, Anonymous. Once all the Duggars like someone it seems pretty serious. That’s why their courtship aren’t very long. And if Kendra and Jeddiah were in an almost relationship then I guess the tabloid were right and there was drama between the brothers. Sad because you’d think the boys’ loyalty to one other would be stronger than to let a girl come between them. Now, I’m not saying, what the the tabloid said is correct since no one in the Duggar family has confirmed it but no one also denied it so until then, I’m just like yeah, I don’t care for Kendra.

  17. Love her dress!
Is "Grammy" her father's mom? Or a family friend? She didn't really resemble Kendra's mom.

    1. So? Kendra doesn’t resemble her parents at all.

    2. Kind of a personal question...

    3. Just curious; if she may be a family neighbor/friend they call "Grammy"? She is just so much taller than any of the Caldwell family.

    4. I wouldn't be surprised if Kendra inherited her looks from a grandparent. (I did too, I look like my dad's mother, more than either of my parents.)

  19. These incessant "Say Yes to the Dress" episodes remind me of my own experience, which was as low-key as you can get. I brought along only my best friend to help me pick out a very understated and inexpensive wedding dress, which I chose off-the-rack in under an hour at store that was just a short drive away. I paid a little extra for alterations. Afterward, I took my friend to lunch. I never even entertained the idea of bring along an entourage.

    1. I took my mom and my grandma. Mine was low-key, too. All this hoopla is good for the bridal industry, so they push it.

    2. Yes, but if you were from a larger family and close to your in-laws, you might have had an entourage. Everyone's different.

    3. 3:02- I come from a relatively large family, am close to them and my in-laws. I didn't want an entrourage, just brought one of my sisters along. I think these TLC wedding dress try-outs are for filming purposes, hence the crowds and commotion.

    4. My husband and I decided to get married while I was in Afghanistan! After researching many dresses online, I felt so discouraged at the cost. My husband kept researching and found two seamstresses that work completely online and will make any dress you want for a fraction of the price. I sent them 18 measurements (finding a tape measure in Afghanistan was difficult) and the dress arrived in the mail when I got back. I loved it!
My situation was perfect for us but I do enjoy watching all Duggars go to Renee's.

  23. Lilly and Ellie,
thank you for your blog and all you share with us. I enjoy Counting On very much. I have watched this family from the beginning. I disagree with those who don't want to see courting, engagement, weddings, babies. I do. Each couple is different and I enjoy the details. This season's episodes are very well done. I do think TLC needs to give us more episodes per season. Maybe they will as they have more "Duggar" families to film. Fingers crossed ;)
